The text is taken and adapted from Peter Davidson’s powerful and beautiful poem of the same name, with the addition of three complementary texts: How Beautiful on the Mountains, O Sweetest Jesus and Drop, Drop, Slow Tears. My Crucifixus begins with a setting of Isaiah 52:7, ‘How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news.’ Here, Isaiah predicts the birth of the Messiah – he, who would save the people of Israel. The meaning in this passage seems also to suggest this: Isaiah was describing the certain return of the Jews to their own land. He sees in visions the heralds announcing their return to Jerusalem running on the distant hills, declaring that the long and painful captivity was closed, and that the Holy City and its temple were again to rise with splendour, and that peace and plenty and joy were to be spread over the land. My setting of this vision of hope and rebirth is accompanied by the advent hymn, ‘O Come, O Come, Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel’. This, of course, is in allusion to Isaiah’s prediction that God would give us a sign, and he would be called ‘Emmanuel’ – God with us. The movement begins and ends with a plainchant, high in tessitura, a re-composing of the compline hymn, ‘Te Lucis ante terminum’ (at the closing of the day) which, suggesting Christ’s destiny and death even at his birth, becomes the harmonic and melodic backbone of the entire work. The second meditation, ‘Your Silence is Stillness’ presents the scene of our Lord on the Cross, injured, silent before the hour of his death. This gentle, choral hymn is accompanied by a canon of descending lines, representing the precious blood dropping. The music feels trapped here; ever decreasing, descending lines in the accompaniment are detached from the choral part, swamping it at times. One brief pause is given as Christ himself speaks. This is set in Latin and as plainchant accompanied by a solitary bell; however, even this cannot stop the relentless march of time. ‘O Sweetest Jesus’ is a hymn of meditation and devotion, taking its text from the Roman Catholic prayer before a Crucifix. For me, this is the most deeply personal part of my setting of the Crucifixus and one which allows us to join with Christ’s suffering. Here, the descending lines of the second movement are transformed from fear and hurt to tears of compassion, love and hope as we all weep at the sight of Christ. ‘Drop, Drop, Slow Tears’ is a choral interlude which is sung without accompaniment. It is the emotional heart of the entire work and sets Phineas Fletcher’s deeply moving poem which tells of the devotional Mary Magdalene as she uses her tears to wet and bathe the feet of Jesus (Luke 7:38). Mary’s great act of love and penitence frees her from her troubled life and shows us all the beauty of redemption. 7 Tour Programme.indd 7 27/06/2013 10:59 ‘The Tree Takes Living Flame’ is an aggressive, tortured response to Christ’s treatment and final moments on the Cross. An intense battery of percussion-like effects is set alongside virtuosic parts for the organ to create a whirlwind of emotion representing the tree (the Cross) taking ‘living flame’ (washed with Christ’s blood). The choir also actually becomes ‘flames’ at various points as some words are set in hocket between male and female voices. The finale, ‘I Tend You in Paradise’ begins with a lament from Christ, ‘What have I done to you?’, but quickly moves into a long processional that brings all the other movements together leading to a rousing conclusion of ‘Alleluia’ (Praise God), before the final words from Christ, ‘Consummatum est’ (it is finished) and the music dissolves upwards. This quiet, gentle resolution brings the Crucifixus to a close. Crucifixus is commissioned by sound, Margaret Carlaw and Derek Ogston. Introit How Beautiful on the Mountains How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news And proclaim the gospel of peace. Alleluia Your Silence is Stillness Your silence is the stillness before day. Your blood drops as the rain on parching ground; My Lord is wounded as my Lord is still. Your wounds are eloquent beyond all words. Your silence is the stillness before day. Soft folds of snow to hold your Holy face. Your wounded beauty in eclipse, With dirt of the road, with dark of our sins, Our consolation and our sorrow now. Your silence is the stillness before day O Sweetest Jesus O sweetest Jesus, I cast myself upon my knees in Thy sight, And with the desire of my soul, I pray. Drop, Drop, Slow Tears Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet, which brought from heaven the news and Prince of Peace. Cease not, wet eyes, his mercies to entreat; to cry for vengeance sin doth never cease. In your deep floods drown all my faults and fears; nor let his eye see sin, but through my tears. Amen The Tree Takes Living Flame The tree takes living flame, the dry staff of flowers And flower and fire are the death of our death. Drop balsam, weep incense, flare in blood: There blows upon your stock the wounded rose. All wholeness broken, blooded glory torn. Tree most exalted, soften your branches; Oh softly fold your dying creator round. The fruit of the tree brought us death: His death on the tree brings us life: This is our sorrow, this is our joy. 8 Tour Programme.indd 8 27/06/2013 10:59 Finale – I Tend You In Paradise For love I tended you in paradise, my people, raised you as the chosen vine In my heart’s vineyard guarded you from harm What have I done to you? How have I injured you? Parched in the arid chasm of the sands in pity for your thirst, I made flint weep, I guarded you from harm, What have I done to you? With adamant and steel you pierced my heart. What have I done to you? O Heart dissolve in blood, my eyes melt in tears: Wine from the vineyards will flow forth for you, My daystar draw the rain to your starved land Love of my wounded heart, Our tears and blood are one, What have I done to you? How have I injured you? Flow crystal and pour diamond from the stone. Your vintage ripened into bitterness: With gall and vinegar you mocked my thirst, Consummatum est. (It is finished.) The Latin texts in movements two and six are taken from the bible verses inscribed at the base of the angel sculptures on the Ponte Sant’Angelo (Bridge of Angels) in Rome: Tronus meus in columna My throne is upon a column Cuius principatus super humerum eius Dominion rests on his shoulders In flagella paratus sum I am ready for the scourge Super vestimentum meum miserunt sortem For my clothing they cast lots In aerumna mea dum configitur spina The thorn is fastened upon me Potaverunt me acteo They gave me vinegar to drink Respice faciem Christi tui Look upon the face of your Christ Regnavit a lingo deus God has reigned from the tree 9 Tour Programme.indd 9 27/06/2013 10:59 CZ Crucifixus Šest rozjímání o proroctví a umučení Páně - Mealor (*1975) Průvodní slovo: Paul Mealor Dílo Crucifixus („Ukřižovaný“) je rozjímáním v šesti částech o proroctví a umučení našeho Pána Ježíše Krista. Mé zhudebnění této vize naděje a znovuzrození je doprovázeno chvalozpěvem „Ó přijď, ó přijď, Emmanueli, a vykup zajatý Izrael“ (O Come, O Come, Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel). Krátká přestávka nastává v okamžiku, kdy mluví sám Kristus – latinsky a v podobě gregoriánského chorálu doprovázeného osamělým zvonem. Text je prevzatý z rovnomennej pôsobivej a nádhernej básne Petra Davidsona s pridaním troch doplnkových textov: „Aké krásne sú na vrchoch“ (How Beautiful on the Mountains), „Najsladší Ježišu“ (O Sweetest Jesus) a „Padajte, pomalé slzy“ (Drop, Drop, Slow Tears). Moje spracovanie vízie tejto nádeje a znovuzrodenia sprevádza adventný hymnus “Ó priď, ó priď Emanuel a vykúp zajatý Izrael“ (O Come, O Come, Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel). Druhá meditácia, „Tvoje mlčanie je pokoj“ (Your Silence is Stillness), predstavuje obraz nášho Pána na Kríži, zraneného a mlčiaceho v hodine svojej smrti. Mohutná séria akoby bicích efektov stojí v protiklade virtuóznym pasážam organa a tak vzniká vír emócií predstavujúcich strom (kríž) horiaci „plameňom života“ (zmáčaný Kristovou krvou). Come, O Come, Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel). Potaverunt me acteo Sie gaben mir Essig zu trinken. Respice faciem Christi tui Regnavit a lingo deus Schau in das Gesicht deines Erlösers. Gott regierte vom Baum aus. 15 Tour Programme.indd 15 27/06/2013 10:59 EN Requiem - Mozart (1756-1791) Mozart’s Requiem, the composer’s last and unfinished work, was commissioned by Count Franz von Wallsegg in memory of his wife. In order to gain the commission fee, Mozart’s widow asked Franz Xaver Süssmayr to complete the work in secret. He did this by basing his work on Mozart’s virtually complete drafts of the Kyrie fugue to the Hostias. The Lacrimosa breaks off after bar eight and from there onwards Süssmayr added his own settings of the Sanctus, Hosanna, Benedictus, Agnus Dei and Communion. Mozart also left sketches of an Amen fugue which Süssmayr did not include in his version. However, in the version you will hear this evening by Robert Levin, a slightly altered Lacrimosa leads into a non modulating Amen fugue. Whilst retaining as much of Süssmayr’s version as possible, Levin has revised some of the instrumentation and tonal discrepancies in keeping with Mozart’s other church music. Righteous judge of vengeance, grant me the gift of absolution before the day of retribution. I moan as one who is guilty: owning my shame with a red face; suppliant before you, Lord. Lacrimosa končí v osmém taktu a dál už Süssmayr navázal svým vlastním zhudebněním částí Sanctus, Hosanna, Benedictus, Agnus Dei a Communio. Akokoľvek, vo verzii Roberta Levina, ktorú počujete dnes večer, mierne zmenené Lacrimosa vedie do fúgy v záverečnom Amen bez zmeny tóniny. Levin sa snažil o čo možno najvernejšie zachovanie Süssmayerových častí, akokoľvek, niektoré inštrumentácie a tónové nezrovnalosti revidoval, pridŕžajúc sa vzoru iných kompozícií Mozartovej chrámovej hudby. Weh! Was werd’ ich Armer sagen? Welchen Anwalt mir erfragen, Wenn Gerechte selbst verzagen? Rex tremendae Rex tremendae majestatis, qui salvandos savas gratis, salva me, fons pietatis. König schrecklicher Gewalten. Frei ist Deiner Gnade Schalten: Gnadenquell, laß Gnade walten! Recordare Recordare, Jesu pie, quod sum causa tuae viae; ne me perdas illa die. Quaerens me, sedisti lassus, redemisti crucem passus; tantus labor non sit cassus. Juste judex ultionis, donum fac remissionis ante diem rationis. Ingemisco, tamquam reus: culpa rubet vultus meus; supplicanti parce, Deus. Confutatis Confutatis maledictis, flammis acribus addictis, voca me cum benedictis. Oro supplex et acclinis, cor contritum quasi cinis, gere curam mei finis. Wird die Hölle ohne Schonung Den Verdammten zur Belohnung, Ruf mich zu der Sel’gen Wohnung. Schuldgebeugt zu Dir ich schreie, Tief zerknirscht in Herzensreue, Sel’ges Ende mir verleihe. Lacrimosa Lacrimosa dies illa, qua resurget ex favilla judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus, pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Amen. Tag der Tränen, Tag der Wehen, Da vom Grabe wird erstehen Zum Gericht der Mensch voll Sünden. Laß ihn, Gott, Erbarmen finden. Milder Jesus, Herrscher Du, Schenk den Toten ew’ge Ruh. Amen. 26 Tour Programme.indd 26 27/06/2013 10:59 Offertorium: Domine Jesu Domine Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae, libera animas omnium fidelium defunctorum de poenis inferni et de profundo lacu. Offertoire a Libera me byly přidány až poději.
