° Gorgeous views and long,
sunny days. Prague is wonderful
in summer, so why not make the
most of this season by enjoying
the jewels along the banks of the
River Vltava.
Island Hopping
Many visitors never take time to
enjoy the islands in the Vltava,
which is a pity because they’re
a great place for relaxation or
a picnic. What’s more, you can take
some great pictures of Prague from
them.

Střelecký ostrov (Shooter’s Island),
opposite the National Theatre,
is easily accessible from Most
Legií (Legions’ Bridge), which
crosses the middle of the island.
As its name suggests, armies
once held shooting practice there,
but today it’s a peaceful place.
It looks particularly beautiful in
summer, when the magnificent
horse chestnut trees are in bloom.
Střelecký ostrov is a perfect spot for
unwinding, so why not come here
and watch life go by? The views
from here are wonderful, especially
from the point closest to Charles
Bridge. And if you’re a film buff
there’s another treat in store: you
can watch films under the starlit
skies at the summer cinema thanks
to a special mobile projection called
a ’kinematograf’. Afterwards you
could enjoy a drink at the summer
bar which is organized as part of
the festival, or on the terrace of
the Střelecký ostrov Restaurant.
There are plenty more meal/snack
opportunities around: two of
Prague’s great cafés on either side
of Most Legií: Café Slavia by the
river, and Café Savoy on Vítězná
Street. And the newly opened
Muzeum Kampa, across the river,
has a restaurant too.
Dětský ostrov (Children’s Island)
is, as its name says, a place for
children. Whether it’s playing,
football or skateboarding, Dětský
ostrov has it all. There’s a café/
restaurant here too, from where
you can watch the River Vltava
rushing by or look over at the
National Theatre or Vyšehrad.
Slovanský ostrov (Slavic Island)
is more commonly named Žofín,
after Sophie, the mother of Franz
Josef I. It has a diverse range of
attractions. Rowing boats can be
hired (from April to October),
and the Žofín building hosts
prestigious social events and has
a stylish restaurant. At the other
end of the island and linking it
with the embankment opposite,
is the eyecatching Mánes Gallery.
It’s a Functionalist classic and
a must if you enjoy art exhibitions
or modern architecture.
Boat Trips
You may want to see Prague from
the River Vltava itself, and there
are many possibilities: short trips,
long trips or evening cruises,
giving you spectacular views
of the floodlit city and offering
interesting music from jazz to old
Prague cabaret songs. Boats depart
from several points, including
Dvořákovo nábřeží.
A whole cluster of activities
Boats also sail upstream towards
Stromovka, where you’ll find one
of the city’s favourite green spaces.
It attracts families in particular, and
if you visit you’ll soon see why.
Whether you want to stroll, let the
children run around, play pétanque,
or go inline skating, Stromovka is the place. Next to it are the
famous Výstaviště (Exhibition
Grounds), which doesn’t just mean
exhibitions; the famous Křížík
Fountain, the centrepiece of a sound
and light show every summer, is

another attraction. A funfair and
the Mořský svět aquarium, bringing
the sea to Prague, are others. A path
from Stromovka leads to peaceful,
village-like Troja and its three
sights – Troja Chateau, Prague Zoo
and part of the Botanic Gardens.
Baroque Troja Chateau is part of
the City Gallery of Prague and has
notable interiors; Prague Zoo is
thriving again after the 2002 floods.
The Botanic Gardens include an
impressive greenhouse known as
Fata Morgana. You can see all three
attractions with the Trojská karta
(Troja Card).
Party on the beach
But if you like more energetic
pastimes you can find them by
the Vltava. Žluté lázně, in Podolí,
under Vyšehrad, offers a full
range of activities, including beach
volleyball. Or if you’re in the beach
party mood there are cafés to enjoy.

We have listed some of the main
attractions by the Vltava, but
there are many more to see. They
include historic Vyšehrad, a short
walk from Corinthia Towers and
ideal for a leisurely walk. The
Braník district, south of Vyšehrad,
will surely tempt cyclists and
inline skaters, with its specially
designed paths for them beside the
Vltava. Whatever your interests,
you’re sure to find something to
enjoy down by the river.

Na březích Vltavy
Pražský hrad, Karlův most a Staroměstské náměstí patří mezi
pražské památky, které prostě „musíte“ vidět. Ale máte-li dost času,
proč nenavštívit některou z atrakcí na břehu Vltavy? Lze odtud spatřit
Prahu v celé její kráse. Vybrali jsme pro vás tipy na některé z hlavních
lákadel.
Ostrovy
Začínáme ostrovy na Vltavě. Ačkoli jsou často opomíjené, nabízejí
jedinečnou příležitost odpočinout si a pokochat se nádherným výhledem
na Prahu. Na Střelecký ostrov se dostanete z mostu Legií. Je to tiché
místo, jehož krása vynikne především na jaře a v létě. Můžete se tu jen
tak projít, navštívit letní kino se slavným Kinematografem bratří Čadíků
nebo obdivovat krásy Prahy. Střelecký ostrov se nachází nedaleko
dvou pražských proslulých kaváren: kavárny Slavia na Národní třídě
a na straně druhé Café Savoy ve Vítězné ulici. Dětský ostrov, jak už
název napovídá, slouží těm nejmenším, kteří si mohou hrát na několika
zdejších multifunkčních hřištích. Z ostrova je také krásný výhled. Na
Slovanském ostrově si můžete od dubna do října vypůjčit loďku,
navštívit palác Žofín nebo galerii Mánes, ukázku typické funkcionalistické architektury.
Výlety parníkem
Možná zatoužíte obdivovat Prahu z Vltavy samotné. Pak jistě oceníte
rozsáhlou nabídku výletů parníkem. Lodě odjíždějí z několika míst podél
řeky, včetně Dvořákova nábřeží u Pařížské ulice, a k výběru je hned
několik variant výletů po vodě: od jazzového hudebního programu až
po delší výlet parníkem do zoo nebo na Slapy.
Za aktivitami do Stromovky a do Troji
Oblasti kolem Vltavy, které jsou relativně v dosahu z centra města,
nabízí i mnohé jiné aktivity. Park Stromovka patří k největším plochám
zeleně v Praze a je ideálním místem pro vycházky a aktivní prožití
volného času například na kolečkových bruslích. Vedle parku je známé
Výstaviště se slavnou Křižíkovou fontánou, akváriem Mořský svět
a lunaparkem. Na druhém břehu řeky stojí další dvě pražské atrakce
– Trojský zámek a Zoologická zahrada, které spolu sousedí. Trojský
zámek nabízí nádherné interiéry, zatímco zoo prožila obnovu po povodních a nyní nabízí spoustu atrakcí pro celou rodinu, včetně pavilonu
indonéské džungle.
Písečné pláže… v Praze!
Dáváte-li přednost aktivnějšímu trávení volného času, zamiřte na
vltavské břehy také. Žluté lázně v Podolí nabízejí celou řadu sportovních
příležitostí a na druhém břehu řeky na Smíchově byla pro veřejnost
otevřena „1. pražská pláž“.
A to ještě není vše…
Za zhlédnutí stojí také Muzeum Kampa, historický Vyšehrad, který
se nachází poblíž hotelu Corinthia Towers, a čtvrť Braník, jižně od
Vyšehradu, kde byly podél Vltavy vybudovány stezky pro in-line bruslaře
a cyklisty. Okolí řeky prostě uspokojí každého.

Prague is not just
beautiful, but a modern
and successful city
° The Mayor of Prague, Dr. Pavel Bém, made the words of writer
and explorer David Livingstone
his personal motto: “I will go anywhere as long as it`s forward.“
Likewise, during Bém’s term of office Prague has become a fastgrowing modern European city.
What made you go into politics
and get involved at the local government level?
I live in a beautiful city and country,
which I love. I see lots of good things
around me but many bad things too.
I do not want to be a fare-dodging
passenger who only criticizes things
and avoids any responsibility, nor
do I want to be a passive observer
who waits for others to do things for
him. A good politician must know
how to organize, deal with people
and look for creative solutions. My
professional background as a doctor
and psychiatrist has helped me a lot
in this. Local government politics
is therefore a touchstone. If you are
successful in it then you can try
“big“ politics – parliament. And if
you are unsuccessful then you cannot try anything.

What do you think has been the
biggest challenge you have had to
face as Mayor ?
I am still trying to go beyond my
limits and realize a vision I believe
in, which will lead to Prague developing further. A modern, open
city with an effective public administration that safeguards monuments and tradition, but which
also has a vibrant economy and is
prospering.
What do you consider to be the
greatest achievement of your time
as Mayor of Prague?
I cannot mention just one example
of the City Hall‘s success. We have
made a strategic decision which
will influence life in the next 5 to
10 years. We have protected the
city once and for all against flooding, prepared and speeded up construction of an upgraded transport
network, built new metro stations
and introduced barrier-free modern trams. We have declared allout war on crime, dishonest taxi
drivers and all those who do not
respect the law.
Do you see yourself continuing
in Prague politics or are you con-
templating national politics in the
future?
Regarding this issue I have already
said several times that I would like
to be mayor for another four years.
And the reason is simple. I don’t
want to leave the work that I have
started, unfinished. In the next
four years I would therefore like
to be involved in the completion of
projects I have begun and which I
spoke about in the previous question. The priorities are clear: improving the quality of public transport, completion of the upgraded
transport network and putting it
into operation, limiting the traffic burden on the historic centre,
an uncompromising approach to
fighting crime, sensitive monument
protection, construction of sports
grounds, supporting education and
science and an expansion of green
spaces in the city.
You are improving the image of
Prague as much as possible. Which
problem areas do you need to deal
with so that Prague is seen in an
even more positive way?
Yes, you are right. Prague has
an ever clearer and more visible
image. I have to add that in many
areas we are still rectifying bad
urban planning from the previous régime. Regarding the disproportionate transport burden
on the historic centre, we have
begun preparation for the introduction of electronic tolls, which
have proved to be a successful
solution in a number of European
capitals. In the area of crime, we
have been successful in dealing
with dishonest taxi drivers, but in
the Safe Prague initiative we are
also adopting a zero tolerance approach to other forms of offences.
This measure has brought definite
improvements, especially in the
city centre, but on the other hand
the city council is limited by insufficient powers. As an exaggeration
I could say that “We are half way
there.“
Recently Prague was in danger
again from flooding. What basic
steps has the city council taken to
ensure that the floods of 2002 do
not happen again and how has the
historic centre of Prague been protected against such incidents?
We have been building a functioning anti-flood system which is
unique not only in the Czech Republic but in Europe. The length
of all the earth dams, low walls,
concrete walls and mobile barriers
so far measure an impressive 20.5
kilometres and we intend to build
more. We have created an organisational and information system
for running the crisis team and all
anti-flood measures, not only in
the historic centre but almost all of
Prague. Of course, such a system
costs money: as much as CZK 3.5
billion, but it's definitely worth it.
You are supporting Prague’s bid
for the summer Olympic games.
When do you think it will be possible to consider bidding for the
event?
First of all, I must say that it would
not just be the Olympics in Prague
but in the whole Czech Republic.
The focal point would of course be
the capital because it's a big magnet
for the International Olympic Committee and world sport. Now we
are at the preparation and mapping
stage, and we are producing spatial,
economic and expert analyses for
the construction of sports grounds,
the Olympic village and the technical facilities. These preliminary
analyses show that the Olympics
should be beneficial, including financially. For Prague this would
mean not only the development of
the city and its sports infrastructure
but also resolving a number of key
issues, for example the lack of student accommodation. This perhaps
could be dealt with by the construction of the Olympic or media village. At the beginning of 2007 we
will have all the material for the
next decision.
How do you see tourism developing in Prague in the future?
Prague today is not only a capital
city of culture, and of European history, but also of conference tourism.
A whole range of important international cultural events take place
here, as do various international
congresses of experts. For example,
Prague will become, after Rome
and Sydney, only the third city in
the world where the annual general
meeting of the International Astronomical Union will take place,
which will attract 3,000 experts
from all over the world. All these
events raise the prestige of our city,
and therefore in our role as the city
council we organize them or at least
help in their organization. I see po-
tential for further development in
this.
Prague is a very attractive European destination and at the same
time a modern capital providing
services to its residents. How can
the town hall try to balance these
two functions?
Every attractive large city in the
world has a similar problem.
Prague is the fastest developing
tourist destination in Europe. The
strategic development for the city
consists of a polycentric arrangement so that the stress on the
historic centre is spread out. This
plan is working – new, dynamic
centres have grown up and others
are growing. Of course, economics
is a significant factor in the travel
industry. Prague is becoming the
engine of the whole Czech economy, and it makes up 25 % of GDP.
Despite this, I regard it as vital
above all to ensure that the basic
necessities of Prague residents
themselves are safeguarded. I also
want to ensure that the city does
not become just an open-air museum for tourists.
As a native of Prague, can you
recommend any less well known
touristic sights that Guest@ readers
might be interested in seeing?
All of Prague is beautiful! Yet all of
us have our own favourite places.
I would recommend Nový svět at
Hradčany, the Functionalist villas
of Baba, and Divoká Šárka, but also
Kafka‘s Old Town, with its nooks
and lanes off the classic tourist
routes.

Members of our Corinthia Hotels Prague team visited the children’s
orphanage in Ledce and helped the children celebrate Easter. The staff
and children had a lot of fun, and the team helped them prepare special
seasonal goodies such as Easter eggs. They also made traditional
Easter decorations.

THE LONGEST JAMAICAN NIGHT
The colours and sounds of the Caribbean came to Central Europe on
27 April, when Prague’s longest Jamaican night was held at Corinthia
Panorama Hotel. This was the latest in a series of themed nights
celebrating the music, dance and food of different countries, and as
always a little bit of the culture of another part of the world came to
Prague. The hotel pulsated with intoxicating sounds from the West
Indies as guests experienced a purely Jamaican evening. They danced
to hot Caribbean rhythms, reggae and the biggest hits of Bob Marley,
played by “United Flavour”. Guests were dazzled by Jamaican
dancers, who entertained them with a stunning display. The evening
also included a fashion show, adding to the special atmosphere.
And it wasn’t just music, dance and fashion. There was plenty of
excellent food too, with delicious traditional Jamaican specialities
including coconut and fish dishes, Jamaican roast beef, and barbecue
and jerky sauces. The food was accompanied by some special drinks
which of course included the best tropical cocktails. A raffle made
the evening extra special, especially for the lucky winner, who won
a voucher for an exclusive stay for two at the Corinthia Grand Hotel
Royal in Budapest.
NEJDELŠÍ JAMAJSKÁ NOC
27. dubna se v Corinthia Panorama Hotelu konala „Nejdelší jamajská
noc v Praze”. Hosté si užívali večera ve zcela jamajském stylu, se
žhavými karibskými rytmy, reggae a největšími hity Boba Marleyho.
Skupina hudebníků United Flavour pobavila hosty velkolepým
vystoupením. K dispozici bylo mnoho vynikajících jídel, například

Special springs
Mariánské Lázně was founded
when a local abbot and a German
doctor set up a spa here in the 18th
century. A remote woodland spot
was transformed into a highly
fashionable resort called Marienbad,
later attracting Europe’s rulers.
Royal visitors included British
King Edward VII and Emperor
Franz-Josef I of Austria. Strauss,
Chopin, Goethe, and Masaryk, the
first President of Czechoslovakia
were among other prominent
visitors. Mariánské Lázně, as it’s
known today, still enchants visitors
with its unique charm. How many
other towns can boast 40 springs?
They vary in temperature from
7 to 10°C, and experts claim the
waters can treat a range of illnesses,
including kidney problems. Follow

at one of the various springs or have
a mud bath.
A walk is as good as a bath
It’s not just the springs and the
baths that are good for your health.
Walking is a very important part of
the spa experience. There are many
landscaped areas for strolling,

(Skalník Gardens), in the centre

Before you leave you must try a speciality of Mariánské Lázně,
the round thin wafers known as “oplatky”. They also make good
souvenirs. And if you’ve been enjoying spa treatment or walking
in the countryside nearby you could round off your day with

European tradition. And after all those healthy activities, why not?

to be the most famous building
of all, the stunning Kolonáda,
which forms a focal point in the
town and is regarded as the most
beautiful wrought-iron colonnade
in Bohemia. This elegant structure,
with its graceful curve, measures
120 metres long and 12 metres
wide. Taste the waters here or see
the wonderful architecture of the
colonnade close up by walking
under its arcades. They contrast with
the simple design of its neighbour,
the Křížový pramen (Cross Spring).
This is the most famous of the
springs, and the water constantly
bubbles up here. At the other
end of the Kolonáda stands the
famous Zpívající fontána (Singing
Fountain), whose movements are
controlled by a computer. Classical
music accompanies the flow of
water, enhancing its impact. There
is another elegant colonnade at the
Rudolfův pramen (Rudolf Spring).
Here, some of the spring water is
bottled, or piped to the Kolonáda.

Lázeňství má v českých zemích dlouhou tradici a lázeňská léčba
je u nás stále populární. Mariánské Lázně byly založeny ze
západočeského lázeňského tria až jako poslední, a to v 18. století.

Nejznámějším mariánskolázeňským turistickým místem je Kolonáda,

Procházka je stejně příjemná jako koupel
Procházky tvoří důležitou součást lázeňského života stejně jako
vodní procedury. A míst, kam si lze vyjít, je v Mariánských Lázních
opravdu dost. Za povšimnutí stojí zejména Městské zahrady v centru.
Preferujete-li náročnější túry, krásná okolní krajina nabízí jedinečnou
příležitost nadýchat se čerstvého vzduchu. Můžete se vydat na
jednu z mnoha značených stezek a poblíž Mariánských Lázní je také
Slavkovský les, který je nyní národní rezervací a ideálním místem pro
vycházky.

Před odjezdem z města musíte ochutnat místní specialitu, kulaté

Malá Strana (Lesser Quarter)
With its romantic cobbled streets, this quarter has
changed little since Mozart’s day. Little imagination is
needed to take you back to the 18th century. St Nicholas
Church is one of the most striking Baroque buildings in
Prague. Fittingly, Mozart’s Requiem is still performed
in the church. The dramatic work combines with an
equally dramatic interior.
Stavovské divadlo
Stavovské divadlo (Estates Theatre) is perhaps the
historic building most closely associated with Mozart:
the place where Don Giovanni was premiered in 1787.
The Czech national anthem, “Where is my home?”, was
first performed here too.
Bertramka
Smíchov Quarter once was the rural setting of the
charming Villa Bertramka, home of the Dušeks, friends
of Mozart. He stayed here in 1787. Unfortunately, the
building was seriously damaged by fire in 1871 so it’s
not possible to say which rooms Mozart worked or
slept in, but the villa, which is now a museum devoted
to Mozart, keeps the atmosphere of his time.

Method: Rinse through the baby
spinach leaves and drain off. Rinse
the radish also. Clean the prawns,
discarding only the end section of
the tails.
Potato dressing: mix the natural
yoghurt with the sour cream and
add the finely chopped anchovies
garlic and capers. Add the potatoes,
which have been boiled and grated.
Season with white pepper, salt and
a dash of balsamic vinegar. Mix
well. Marinated shrimps: Make

250 g spinach leaves
20 jumbo shrimps
1 avocado
Natural yoghurt
200 ml sour cream
30 g finely chopped anchovies
3 cloves of garlic
Small teaspoon of capers
150 g potatoes
Pinch of white pepper
2 g salt
Chives for garnish
1 radish for garnish
Balsamic vinegar according to taste
A few tarragon leaves
teaspoon of sugar
(according to taste)
the marinade by boiling a little
balsamic vinegar with tarragon,
salt and sugar. Serving: Decorate
the plate with the washed and
cleaned spinach leaves, which
have been mixed with the potato
dressing. Arrange the avocado,
which has been peeled and cut into
crescent-shaped slices, into a fan
shape on the bed of spinach. Place
the marinated prawns on top and
finish off with a garnish of herbs
and some thin slices of radish.
POACHED PIKE FILLETS WITH
Y O U N G A S PA R A G U S
Ingredients
Serves four
600 g pike
12 potatoes, cut into barrel shapes
12 carrots, cut into barrel shapes
12 white and green asparagus
shoots
3 dl of wine
Lemon juice: 1/2 lemon
2 g salt
400 g asparagus mix
400 g spinach leaves
80 g butter
4 cloves of garlic
1 dl olive oil
2 bay leaves
100 g root celery
Some chive stems
1 dl fish stock
3 dl velouté sauce
1.5 dl sparkling wine
Method: Place cleaned pieces of
pike, cut into fine julienne strips,
into boiling water, to create a fish
stock. Poach the remaining fish
portions for several minutes at
a temperature no higher than 80°C.
Wash the asparagus and remove
the tough woody stem sections.
Simmer the asparagus until soft,
in water infused with lemon juice.
Fry the asparagus for a short while
with garlic slices and olive oil.
Before serving the asparagus fry
it for a short while with butter.
Then bundle it together with the
chive stalks. Sauce: Prepare the
sauce from the velouté sauce made
from the fish stock. Add a glass of
sparkling wine at the end to make
the sauce finer.
Serving: Arrange the warm spinach
in the centre of the plate. Place the
boiled potatoes on the spinach.
Then, put the bunch of asparagus
on the potatoes. As a finishing
touch, place a garnish made from
the julienne strips on top of this.
Put the carrot “barrels“ at the side
and pour the sparkling wine sauce
over the dish.

250 g špenátových listů, 20 ks jumbo krevet, avokáda: 1 ks.
bílý jogurt, zakysaná smetana 200 ml, na jemno nasekané
ančovičky 30 g, česnek 3 stroužky, kapary: malá lžička, brambory:
150 g, bílý pepř: špetka, sůl: 2 g, pažitka: na dekoraci, ředkvička:
1 kus na dekoraci, balsamiko: podle chuti, estragon: pár lístků,
cukr: lžička (podle chuti)
Ingredients

80 g rucola lettuce (washed)
2 nectarines, 80 g gorgonzola
2 tomatoes, tablespoon balsamic
vinegar, tablespoon olive oil
teaspoon honey
4 slices pancetta, 4 slices ciabatta

Method: Mix the honey and balsamic vinegar and blend with
the olive oil. Place the tomato
and nectarines, cut into pieces,
into a bowl. Add the rucola and
mix carefully with the dressing. Arrange the salad on a plate
and dress with pieces of cheese
and toasted ciabatta bread, and
pancetta.
Postup: Mladé lístky špenátu přebereme, propláchneme
a necháme okapat. Ředkvičku také opláchneme. Krevety očistíme
a ponecháme pouze poslední článek ocásku. Bramborový
dresink: bílý jogurt smícháme se zakysanou smetanou, přidáme
najemno nasekané ančovičky, česnek, kapary, přidáme vařené
a nastrouhané brambory. Dochutíme bílým pepřem, solí a kapkou
balsamikového octa, vše dobře promícháme. Marinované krevety:
Marinádu připravíme svařením malého množství vody balsamicového octa, estragonu, soli a cukru.
Pošírované filátko štiky doplněné svazečkem mladého chřestu
s vařeným bramborem, mrkví a jemnou šampaňskou omáčkou

600 g štiky, 12 bramborových soudků, 12 mrkvových soudků,
12 kousků bílého a zeleného chřestu, víno:3 dl, citrónová šťáva:
1/2 citrónu, sůl: 2 g, chřest mix: 400 g, Listový špenát: 400 g,
máslo: 80 g, Česnek: 4 stroužky, olivový olej: 1 dl, bobkový list:
2 ks, kořenová zelenina: 100 g, pažitka: pár stonků, rybí vývar:
1 dl, veloute: 3 dl, sekt: 1,5 dl
Postup: Očištěnou porci štiky vložíme do rybí „várky“ připravené
z vody, nakrájené na jemný julienne . Několik minut necháme
porce masa pošírovat při teplotě nepřesahující 80 °C. Oloupaný
povaříme do měkka v ocitrónované vodě. Pak svážeme stéblem
pažitky. Chřest před podáváním znovu krátce prohřejeme na
másle. Omyjeme, odstraníme ztvrdlé středy a na plátcích česneku
a olivovém oleji krátce prohřejeme. Omáčka: Omáčku připravíme
z omáčky velouté s rybím vývarem, ke konci na zjemnění
přidáme skleničku sektu.
Salát z rukoly, nektarinek a tomatů s gorgonzolou a dresinkem z balsamica a medu
4 porce, 80 g vyprané rukoly, 2 nektarinky, 80 g gorgonzoly,
2 tomaty, lžíce balsamica, lžíce olivového oleje, lžička medu,
4 plátky pancetty, 4 plátky ciabatty, sůl
Postup: Med smícháme s balsamikem a olejem a promícháme. Do
mísy vložíme na dílky pokrájené tomaty a nektarinky, přidáme rukolu
a velmi opatrně promícháme s dresinkem. Salát rozložíme na talíře
a doplníme kousky sýra a opečenou ciabattou a pancettou.

Worldwide, people are celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of
Mozart, and Prague has a special reason to celebrate the Austrian composer:
he was closely associated with the city. The city is marking the occasion
with a special year-long celebration, “Mozart Praha 2006“, incorporating
established music festivals. Throughout the summer the charming Villa
Bertramka, where the composer finished “Don Giovanni“, is the setting
for performances of Mozart’s work. In July and August this opera is being
performed at the splendid Estates Theatre, where it was given its premiere.
The Prague Music Festival, featuring works by Mozart, is also included in
the year-long celebration. The event is in its third year and takes place at
several venues in the city. Other composers featured in the festival include
Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.

GALLERY EXHIBITION
One of the most successful artists in the Czech Republic came to this country
with few possessions and began selling his work alongside artists on the

explore Gothic courtyards or soar with him over the rooftops of Prague.

Prague is fantastic in the summer.
There are so many things to do and
see: a trip to the zoo, enjoying an
ice cream, or playing in the park
– Stromovka is a great place to go
inline skating or cycling. And if
you want to run around and play
games there are plenty of places for
this too. One of the best is Dětský
ostrov (Children's Island), right in
the middle of Prague. It’s a great
way to spend some time on a sunny
summer’s day, and if its really hot
you can cool down under the trees.
You and your friends can enjoy lots
of different activities here. There’s
a skateboard park where you can
practise your skills. Or you can play
football in the mini pitch next to the
skateboard park. And next to that is
a big playground with swings and
all sorts of other things. You certainly
won’t get bored here!
And when it’s time for a break
your parents could take you to
the restaurant next to the park for
something to eat or drink. After
that you might want to play again,
or how about asking the grownups to take you out on a boat on the
River Vltava? You can hire a rowing
boat on Slovanský ostrov or choose
something bigger – sail down the
river on one of the cruise boats.
