M
achine building industry is the strongest industry sector in the region. Further strong
industries include chemical industry and textile
manufacturing, agriculture and forestry. Electrical and electronic engineering has been the most
rapidly growing industry in the past few years.
Textile manufacturing and clothing industry are,
together with machine building industry, among
the most prevalent industries of the region, in
particular in the Prostějov area and the mountain
regions where they are dominant industry sectors.
Food industry (building on the base provided by
the primary sector of agriculture) has a strong position chiefly in the area of Haná.
Chief industries of the region:
building and construction industry
civil service, education, health care
• machine building industry
• textile manufacturing and clothing industry
• electrical and electronic engineering
• food industry
Stratification of the industry sectors
The economy of the Haná area, sometimes referred
to as the „business triangle“ (Olomouc, Přerov, Prostějov), is more stable and diversified than economy
of the mountain regions (Šumperk, Jeseník) which
suffer from stronger impact of seasonal unemployment and possibilities of their further development
are limited by the existing
infrastructure, especially

Small and medium enterprises
Another phenomenon influencing economic climate of the region is the status and development of
small a medium enterprises. There are 13,540 small
companies (with 1–24 employees) operating in the
region, accounting for nearly 90% of all employers.
At the same time, there are 1,408 medium enterprises (25-249 employees) and 100 large businesses
(250 or more employees) in the region.
10
Larger enterprises (25 or more employees) account
for only 10% of all employers, they nevertheless
employ three times the number of employees
employed by small companies.
Small companies (of up to 24 employees) together
with sole proprietors count 109,915 entrepreneurs
registered in 2007. Development of small companies, in particular in the services sector, compensated for the decreasing number of jobs in agribusiness.
Regional Agency for Development of Central
Moravia (Regionální agentura pro rozvoj střední
Moravy, RARSM) was founded by Central Moravia Municipalities Union (SOSM) and the municipal council of the city of Olomouc. The agency‘s mission statement is to solve local problems
and coordinate development and growth strategy of the region.

Microregions are unions of municipalities, founded in order to support development of the given area. Such unions enable the municipalities
to realize projects which would not be feasible
There are several institutions and organizations
aiming to support economic development and cooperation between the public and private sectors
in the region, each fulfilling its specific role. Among
them are:

representatives to find new possibilities of business development in the region. It offers consultations concerning possibilities of support for
businesses by the EU structural funds programmes provided by Czechinvest. Czechinvest also
works with companies to help them realize investments in the region.
Central Moravia Municipalities Union (Sdružení
obcí střední Moravy, SOSM) is a voluntary
organization formed by municipalities prevalently located in the Olomouc region, although
there are some members from the areas of
Moravská Třebová, Rýmařov and south Moravia
as well. The Union provides chiefly coordinati
on and counselling services and strives to sup
port economic and cultural growth of towns
and villages of central Moravia. As of this writing there are 133 members in the Union.
for any one individual town or village, or projects of general importance. There are 36 microregions in the Olomouc Region. Individual municipalities can apply for membership in several
unions at the same time, which accounts for
overlapping between some of the microregions.

Local action groups (LAG) are being founded
thanks to the LEADER method, based on local
partnership and unified development strategy.
LAGs are formed by Civil Service representatives, businessmen and representatives of local
charities. There are 20 LAGs in the Olomouc Region, two of which include members from the
neighbouring regions. Certain LAGs are directly
related to microregions, while others are completely independent of them.

Chambers of commerce. There is a chamber of
commerce in each of the region‘s districts.
Apart from them, there is also Region Chamber
of Commerce. The chambers‘ chief mission is
to help promote trade and enterprise and sup
port small to mid-sized businesses in the area.

The Olomouc Region‘s gross domestic product per
capita was 8,093 EUR (226,617 CZK) in 2005, placing the region 13th, i.e. second but the last, among
the Czech Republic‘s regions. The Czech Republic‘s
average GDP per capita is 10,365 EUR (290,232
CZK, excluding Prague would significantly decrease
the figure to 8,897 EUR, 249,112 CZK per capita, as
Prague differs greatly from the rest of the country‘s
regions with its 21,675 EUR, 606,925 CZK per capita

Among
them are:

ny development of business activities is strongly influenced by transport accessibility. The
Olomouc Region has a well built road network
which is being improved continuously. While the
railways are distributed in the region‘s area rather
evenly, the motorways and carriageways are concentrated mostly in the southern central part of
the region.

In October 2005, the first section of a motorway was
opened in the Olomouc Region, namely a part of
the D1 motorway between Vyškov and Mořice, 6.1

improve the overall transport accessibility in the
whole region.
Airports
There are a total of seven local airports in the region:
Přerov, Hranice, Prostějov, Olomouc, Bohuňovice,
Šumperk, Jeseník–Mikulovice. While the Olomouc
airport has the official status of a public international airport, it is however not used for regular public
air transport.

they at the same time increase secondary students‘
chance of finding a place of further study near their
place of residence. Non-university higher education and bachelor studies are offered in the following
university branches:

research and their commercialization, the Science
and Technology Park of the Palacký University in
Olomouc was established (Vědeckotechnický park
Univerzity Palackého, VTP UP), as one of the Czech
Republic‘s accredited science and technology parks.
The Science and Technology Park includes the Centre for Technology Transfer, focusing on commercialization of results of the university‘s scientific research and patent services. The park also contains
a Technology Centre with laboratories of the Applied Research Centre. To support creation of spin-off companies with close ties to the university and
to facilitate an easier start for innovation-oriented
businesses (biotechnology, nanotechnology, opto-
electronics) there was a facility founded called the
Business Incubator in the Science and Technology
Park of the Palacký University which provides background for 15-22 innovation-oriented companies
on the area of 1603 m2. Apart from this background,
the companies will receive counselling services,
grants for rent and specialized counselling from

is uneven to a large extent due to the equally
uneven distribution of large industry plants and
population in general. Largest emission sources
are located in the southern part of the region in
general, and in the districts of Přerov and Olomouc
in particular.
The emission summary overview for the year 2006
shows that the largest part of emissions of TZL,
NOx and CO were produced by mobile sources - i.e.
transport. Sulphur dioxide emissions were, much
like in the previous years, produced mostly by large air pollution sources. The yearly development of
emission rates can be specified as stabilized when
it comes to stationary sources of pollution, while
the mobile pollution source situation is hardly
satisfactory.
