Vážení hosté, milí čtenáři,
s babím létem přichází barevný karlovarský podzim i s jeho nezbytnou nostalgií. Ale nejen romantikou živ
je člověk. V tomto čísle časopisu Pupp Journal Vás tedy pozveme nejen k zajímavým procházkám, výletům
do historie a k návštěvě koncertních sálů, do divadla či na výstavy, ale i k prostřenému stolu. Pozveme Vás
také do nového moderního balneoprovozu, kde můžete relaxovat v bazénu a využít řadu lázeňských procedur.
Prozradíme Vám, kde u nás jedí filmové hvězdy. Právě tam, kam se v Grandrestaurantu posadíte, možná seděl
o letošním mezinárodním filmovém festivalu John Travolta a pochutnával si na vyhlášené svíčkové. V minulých
letech seděly na stejných židlích a chodily po stejných kobercích jako Vy mnohé osobnosti filmového světa,
např. Helen Mirren, Robert de Niro, Robert Redford, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mia Farrow, Sharon Stoneová, Gina
Lollobrigida aj. Svíčkovou a další lahůdky puppovské kuchyně ochutnali také Daniel Craig coby James Bond
při natáčení filmu Casino Royale, nebo Queen Latifah, která zde prožívala své filmové Poslední prázdniny.
Partnerem v této svěží komedii jí byl i Gérard Depardieu, který v Karlových Varech ještě natáčel televizní film
o Honoré de Balzacovi. Jistě i Vy budete spokojeni s výsledky práce našich kuchařů, cukrářů a všeho personálu.

mit dem Altweibersommer kommt der bunte Karlsbader Herbst mit seiner unvermeidlichen Nostalgie. Man lebt jedoch nicht nur für die
Romantik. In dieser Ausgabe der Zeitschrift Pupp Journal laden wir Sie also nicht nur zu interessanten Spaziergängen, Ausflügen in die
Geschichte und zum Besuch der Konzertsäle, ins Theater oder in Ausstellungen ein, sondern auch zum gedeckten Tisch. Wir laden Sie
auch in den neuen modernen Balneobetrieb ein, wo man sich im Pool erholen kann und viele Kuranwendungen nutzen kann. Wir verraten
Ihnen, wo bei uns die Filmstars essen. Gerade dort, wohin Sie sich im Grandrestaurant setzen, saß vielleicht während des diesjährigen
Internationalen Filmfestivals John Travolta und ließ sich den berühmten Lendenbraten schmecken. In den vorigen Jahren saßen auf den
gleichen Stühlen und gingen auf den gleichen Teppichen wie Sie viele Persönlichkeiten der Filmwelt, z. B. Helen Mirren, Robert de Niro,
Robert Redford, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mia Farrow, Sharon Stone, Gina Lollobrigida u.a. Den Lendenbraten sowie weitere Delikatessen der
Puppischen Küche kosteten auch Daniel Craig als James Bond während der Dreharbeiten am Film Casino Royale, oder Queen Latifah, die
hier im Film ihre Noch einmal Ferien (Last Holiday) erlebte. Der Partner in dieser lebhaften Komödie war ihr Gérard Depardieu, der in
Karlsbad noch den Fernsehfilm über Honoré de Balzac drehte. Auch Sie werden sicher mit den Ergebnissen der Arbeit unserer Köchen,
der Zuckerbäcker und des gesamten Personals zufrieden sein.

The colourful Karlovy Vary autumn and its indispensable nostalgia come together with the Indian summer. However, man does not live only
by romance. That is why we would like to invite you not only to interesting walks, trips into history and visits to concert halls, to the cinema,
theatre or to exhibitions but also to a set up table in this edition of the Pupp Journal magazine. We will invite you to a new spa department
where you can relax in the relax pool and enjoy a number of spa treatments. We will tell you where in our hotel film stars eat. Just where you
will sit down in the Grandrestaurant, John Travolta might have sat at this year´s international film festival and might have enjoyed renowned
roast sirloin in cream sauce. Many a personality from the world of film sat on the same chair and walked on the same carpets - e.g. Helen
Mirren, Robert de Niro, Robert Redford, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mia Farrow, Sharon Stone, Gina Lollobrigida and others. Daniel Craig as
James Bond tasted roast sirloin in cream sauce and other delicacies of Pupp cuisine when he was shooting the film Casino Royale here, or
Queen Latifah who spent her Last Holiday here. Her partner in this comedy was Gérard Depardieu who also made a TV film about Honoré
de Balsac in Karlovy Vary. I am sure you will be satisfied with the results of work of our cooks, confectioners and the all staff as well.

Karlovarský karneval po šesté
Jeden z největších karnevalových průvodů ve střední Evropě má již
v Karlových Varech svou tradici. Desítky profesionálních účinkujících, stovky masek, loutek, žonglérů, kejklířů a exotických tanečnic
společně s několika tisíci obyvatel a návštěvníků oživily ulice a prostranství. Unikátní průvod, v němž bylo možno obdivovat na dvě
desítky alegorických atrakcí, měřil téměř půl kilometru. Procházel
centrem lázní až ke Grandhotelu Pupp. Pak na prostranství před
hotelem Thermal proběhlo vyhlášení krále a královny karnevalu.
Pro letošní rok se jimi staly masky Slunce a Měsíce s družinou.
Součástí programu byl Mattoni hudební festival s kapelami a zpěváky různých žánrů. Karnevalu předcházela noční romantická
plavba lodiček po Teplé. Plavbu absolvovalo na tři stovky odvážlivců. Příští rok můžete být mezi spokojenými účastníky i Vy. Všechny
děti v karnevalovém průvodu každoročně dostávají před
Grandhotelem Pupp zákusky nebo koláče. Letos jim pohostinný
personál hotelu rozdával sladké muffiny.
Das Karlsbader Karneval zum sechsten Mal
Einer der größten Karnevalumzüge in Mitteleuropa ist in Karlsbad
bereits zu einer Tradition geworden. Dutzende professionelle
Teilnehmer, Hunderte Masken, Marionetten, Jongleure, Gaukler
und exotische Tänzerinnen belebten zusammen mit einigen
Tausenden Einwohnern und Besuchern die Straßen und Plätze der
Stadt. Der einmalige Umzug, in dem man an die zwanzig Wagen
bewundern konnte, war fast einen halben Kilometer lang. Er ging
durch das Zentrum der Kurstadt bis zum Grandhotel Pupp.
Danach fand auf den Platz vor dem Hotel Thermal die Verkündung
des Königs und der Königin des Karnevals statt. In diesem Jahr
wurden es die Masken der Sonne und des Mondes mit Gefolge. Am
Programm stand auch das Mattoni Musikfestival mit Bands und
Sängern mehrerer Genres. Am Vorabend des Karnevals gab es eine
romantische Fahrt auf der Tepl. An der Fahrt nahmen an die dreihundert furchtlose Schifffahrer teil. Das nächste Jahr können unter

den zufriedenen Teilnehmer auch Sie sein. Alle Kinder im
Karnevalumzug bekommen jedes Jahr vor dem Grandhotel Pupp
Desserts oder Kuchen. In diesem Jahr bekamen sie von dem gastfreundlichen Hotelpersonal süße Muffins.
The Karlovy Carnival for the Sixth Time
One of the biggest carnival processions in central Europe has already its tradition in Karlovy Vary. Tens of professional performers,
hundreds of masks, marionettes, jugglers, conjurers and exotic
dancers together with several thousands of inhabitants and visitors
brought life to streets and open space. The unique procession, in
which you could admire almost twenty floats, was almost half a kilometre long. It walked through the spa centre as far as the
Grandhotel Pupp. The king and the queen of the carnival were
announced in front of the Thermal Hotel. This year the masks of
the Sun and the Moon with their suites became the winners. A part
of the programme was the Mattoni Music Festival with bands and
singers of different genres. The carnival had been preceded by
a romantic night boat voyage on the Teplá River. About three hundred dare people took part in it. Next year you can be one of the
satisfied participants too. Every year all children in the carnival
procession get desserts or cakes in front of the Grandhotel Pupp.
This year the hospitable hotel staff gave them sweet muffins.

Filmový svět v Grandhotelu Pupp
Jako každý rok vedly kroky milovníků filmu začátkem července do
Karlových Varů, kde probíhal již 48. ročník mezinárodního filmového festivalu. Jeho součástí je vždy i Grandhotel Pupp. I zde se
roztočil kolotoč filmů, rozhovorů, autogramiád, recepcí, party,
koktejlů. Významné osobnosti se ubytovaly v nejslavnějších apartmá. Nejzručnější kuchaři a cukráři vytvářeli lahůdky pro festivalové labužníky, nejhbitější číšníci zvládali obsluhu i těch nejnáročnějších hostů. Atmosféru dotvářel potlesk, záplava květin, úsměvy,
blesky fotoaparátů. Vrcholnou společenskou a gastronomickou
událostí byla Opening party a Closing party. Tam, kde dnes bydlíte,
sedíte, procházíte se, trávili své dny významní režiséři, producenti,
žurnalisté a slavné filmové hvězdy (Johnn Travolta, Oliver Stone,
Murray Abraham, Agneszka Holland aj.).

Wie jedes Jahr führten Anfang Juli die Schritte der Filmliebhaber nach
Karlsbad, wo schon der 48. Jahrgang des Internationalen Filmfestivals
stattfand. Sein Bestandteil ist natürlich auch das Grandhotel Pupp.
Man zeigte hier Filme, hier fanden Interviews, Autogrammschreiben,
Banketts, Partys und Cocktails statt. Die bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten
wurden in den berühmtesten Appartements untergebracht. Die besten
Köche und Zuckerbäcker bereiteten Leckerbissen für die Festival
gourmets vor, die flottesten Kellner stellten auch die anspruchsvollsten

Gäste zufrieden. Die Atmosphäre war toll, Applaus, eine Menge von
Blumen, frohe Gesichter, die Blitze der Fotokameras. Ein gesellschaftlicher und gastronomischer Höhepunkt war die Opening Party und
Closing Party. Dort, wo sie heute wohnen, sitzen, spazieren, verbrachten ihre Tage die bedeutenden Regisseure, Produzenten, Journalisten
und berühmte Filmstars (Johnn Travolta, Oliver Stone, Murray
Abraham, Agneszka Holland usw.).
The World of Film in the Grandhotel Pupp
Like every year, the steps of friends of film were directed towards
Karlovy Vary in early July where the 48th year of the international
film festival took place. And, of course, the Grandhotel Pupp was
a part of it. The merry-go-round of films, interviews, autograph
parties, banquets, parties and cocktails started here too. Prominent
personalities stayed in the most famous suites. The most skilful
cooks and confectioners prepared delicacies for festival gourmets
and the most agile waiters managed to serve even the most exacting
guests. Applause, floods of flowers, smiles and flashes of cameras
put the finishing touches to the atmosphere. A top social and gastronomic event was the Opening and the Closing Party. Famous
directors, producers, journalists and film stars spent their days
where you are staying, sitting or walking today (Johnn Travolta,
Oliver Stone, Murray Abraham, Agneszka Holland etc.).

A New Tourist Information Centre
A new information centre was opened in an attractive place in the spa
centre. You will find it in one of the historical shops between the Market
Colonnade and the Mill Colonnade. The workers of the information
centre will answer all questions about what you find interesting and will
give you advice on where and when to go. They will give you information
about programmes, trips and transport and will send you tickets for
cultural events. The information monthly Promenáda, a tourist guide
and regional literature are available here. You can buy here small
souvenirs too. The information centre is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on
working days and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
Apart from Mayor Petr Kulhánek and the director of the Information
Centre, the general manager of the Grandhotel Pupp, which prepared
delicious refreshment for the first visitors, took part in the opening
ceremony.

o programech, výletech, dopravě, prodají vstupenky na kulturní
pořady. Získáte zde mapy a informační brožurky. Je zde k dispozici
informační měsíčník Promenáda a turistické průvodce i regionální
literatura. Můžete zde nakoupit i drobné suvenýry. Infocentrum je
otevřeno ve všední dny od 8 do 18 hod., v sobotu a v neděli od 9 do
17 hod.
Slavnostního zahájení se zúčastnila kromě primátora Petra Kulhánka
a ředitelky Infocentra i generální ředitelka Grandhotelu Pupp, který
připravil prvním návštěvníkům lahodné občerstvení.

Im Kurzentrum wurde an einer attraktiven Stelle ein neues Info
zentrum eröffnet. Man findet es in einem der historischen Geschäfte
zwischen der Markt- und Mühlbrunnkolonnade. Die Angestellten des
Infozentrums der Stadt beantworten Ihnen alles, was Sie interessiert,
Sie beraten Sie, wo der Weg lang geht. Sie geben Ihnen Informationen
über das Programm, die Ausflüge, die Verkehrsverbindungen, sie
verkaufen Ihnen Eintrittskarten für die Kulturveranstaltungen. Man
erhält hier Karten und Informationsbroschüren. Es gibt hier die
Informationsmonatszeitschrift Promenáda, Reiseführer sowie die
regionale Literatur. Man kann hier auch ein kleines Souvenir kaufen.
Das Infozentrum ist an Werktagen von 8 bis18 Uhr geöffnet, am
Wochenende von 9 bis 17 Uhr.
An der feierlichen Eröffnung nahmen außer des Oberbürgermeisters
Petr Kulhánek und der Direktorin des Infozentrums auch die
Generaldirektorin vom Grandhotel Pupp teil. Das Grandhotel Pupp
bereitete den ersten Besuchern eine leckere Erfrischung vor.

Zlatá hokejka ve Slavnostním sále
Domovským sálem pro vyhlášení nejlepšího českého hokejisty
v anketě odborníků Zlatá hokejka je již po několik let Slavnostní
sál Grandhotelu Pupp. Do Karlových Varů se každý rok sjíždějí na
velkolepý večer nejlepší hokejoví hráči. V letošním, již 45. ročníku této
prestižní ankety získal nejvyšší ocenění David Krejčí (v současnosti
Boston Bruins, NHL). Nejslavnější hokejista v českých dějinách,
Jaromír Jágr, který je držitelem již deseti těchto trofejí, obsadil 2. místo.

Der heimische Saal für die Verkündung des besten tschechischen
Eishockeyspielers in der Umfrage der Fachleute der Goldene
Eishockeyschläger ist bereits einige Jahre lang der Festsaal vom
Grandhotel Pupp. Zu diesem großartigen Abend kommen jedes
Jahr nach Karlsbad die besten Eishockeyspieler. Im diesjährigen,
dem bereits 45. Jahrgang dieser Prestigeumfrage gewann David
Krejčí (zurzeit bei den Boston Bruins, NHL). Der berühmteste
Eishockeyspieler in der tschechischen Geschichte, Jaromír Jágr, der
bereits zehnmal gewann, belegte den 2. Platz.

The Festive Hall of the Grandhotel Pupp
has been the hall where the best Czech ice
hockey player, the winner of the Golden Ice
Hockey Stick survey of professionals, has
been announced for several years. The best ice
hockey players meet in Karlovy Vary on this
exceptional evening every year. This year´s
winner of the 45th year of the prestigious survey
was David Krejčí (at present the Boston Bruins,
NHL). The most famous ice hockey player in
Czech history, Jaromír Jágr, who already has ten
of these trophies, was the second.

Richard Lhoták pracuje v Grandhotelu Pupp jako vedoucí gastro úseku
od roku 2008. Od roku 1999 pracoval na pozici Restaurant manager
Grandrestaurantu, nočního restaurantu Becher´s Bar a střediska
Becher´s Bar Rendez-vous. V srpnu 2013 byl jmenován vedoucím
provozu Grandhotelu Pupp.
Vystudoval Vysokou školu hotelovou v Praze, obor hotelový management
- lázeňství a cestovní ruch. Je absolventem prestižní Sommelierské
akademie ve Valticích a mnoha odborných kurzů o gastronomických
produktech, ale i vzdělávacích kurzů v oblasti personalistiky a stra
tegického managementu. Jeho krédem je: Abychom poznali budoucnost,
musíme pochopit minulost. Jako koníčky má aktivní sport, rekonstrukce
a stavební práce i sledování společenského a politického dění. Má sbírku
mechanických hodinek a retro přístrojů. Jsou dny, kdy s manželkou
opouští civilizaci a vyhledává liduprázdné kouty Šumavy.
Jak se vám žije v Karlových Varech?
Narodil jsem se v Karlových Varech a vždy se k tomu hlásím.
Jedinečná atmosféra údolí říčky Teplé s okolními lesy, majestátní
historické budovy a návštěvy slavných osobností vytvářejí auru
vyjímečnosti tohoto města. Líbí se mi i modernizace okrajových
částí se zachováním historického původního jádra města.
Máte ve městě své oblíbené místo?
Oblíbeným místem a zároveň mým teritoriem od dětských let byla část
Karlových Varů nazvaná Vyhlídka. Pohled z Vyhlídky na historickou
lázeňskou část je úchvatný. Nalevo impozantní Grandhotel Pupp,
dále Městské divadlo, budova Vřídla a Mlýnské kolonáda. I dnes si
procházím místa, kde s nostalgií vzpomínám na klukovská léta.
Jaký máte vztah ke Grandhotelu Pupp ?
Grandhotel Pupp se stal součástí mého života. Byl na dohled z mého
dětského pokoje. Někdy mám pocit, že práce v tomto hotelu je pro
mě již předem určenou cestou, kterou musím absolvovat, abych
došel životního uspokojení. Maminka vždy tvrdila, že v Grand
hotelu Pupp pracují jen ti nejlepší v oboru. Určitě by měla nyní
radost. Zanechat malou stopu působení ve více jak třísetleté historii

hotelu je pro mě ctí. Historie, slavní hosté a události, které se zde
odehrávaly, jsou závazkem. Hlavně na lidech záleží, jaká je úroveň
hotelových služeb - a mě obklopuje opravdu vynikající tým.
Co byste vzkázal našim čtenářům?
Grandhotel Pupp stojí zato navštívit. Rozmanitostí poskytovaných
služeb uspokojí každého náročného hosta. Café Pupp nabízí sor
timent zákusků dle původních receptur rodiny Puppů, Malá Dvo
rana, srdce hotelu, nabízí noblesní atmosféru při klidném posezení.
Vybraná jídla a nabídka světových vín Vás čeká při návštěvě
Grandrestaurantu. Centrem kulturních a společenských akcí se stává
Slavnostní sál, který pojme až 800 lidí. V neposlední řadě Vás zvu do
nočního zábavního restaurantu Becher´s Bar s širokým sortimentem
světově známých míchaných koktejlů, kubánských doutníků
a taneční hudby. Každý host by měl při návštěvě našeho Grandhotelu
Pupp nabýt pocitu, že se stává součástí pokračování tradice a odkazu
zakladatelů hotelu. Jsou jimi pohostinnost a kvalita služeb.
EIN GESPRÄCH MIT DEM CATERINGSMANAGER
Richard Lhoták arbeitet im Grandhotel Pupp seit 2008 als Leiter
des Verpflegungssektors. Seit dem Jahre 1999 war er am Posten des
Restaurantmanagers des Grandrestaurants, des Nachtrestaurants
Becher´s Bar und des Betriebes Becher´s Bar Rendez-vous. Er wurde
zum Betriebsmanager des Grandhotels Pupp im August 2013 ernannt.
Er absolvierte die Hotelhochschule in Prag, das Fach Hotelmanagement
– Kurwesen und Fremdenverkehr. Er besuchte die anerkannte
Sommelier-Akademie in Valtice (Feldsberg) und viele Fachkurse über
die gastronomischen Produkte, dazu auch Bildungskurse im Bereich
des Personal- und Strategiemanagements. Sein Kredo lautet: Um die
Zukunft kennenzulernen, muss man die Vergangenheit begreifen. Zu
seinen Hobbys gehören der aktive Sport, die Rekonstruktion und die
Bauarbeiten sowie das Verfolgen des gesellschaftlichen und des po
litischen Geschehens. Er hat eine Sammlung von mechanischen Uhren
und Retrogeräten. Es gibt Tage, an denen er mit seiner Ehefrau die
Zivilisation verlässt und menschenleere Orte im Böhmerwald sucht.
Interview
Wie lebt es sich Ihnen in Karlsbad?
Ich bin in Karlsbad geboren und ich bekenne mich dazu immer. Die
einmalige Atmosphäre des Flusstales der Tepl mit den umliegenden
Wäldern, die majestätischen historischen Gebäude und die Besuche
der berühmten Persönlichkeiten bilden die Aura der Einmaligkeit
dieser Stadt. Mir gefällt auch die Modernisierung der Viertel am
Stadtrand, wobei der ursprüngliche historische Stadtkern erhalten
bleibt.
Haben Sie in der Stadt Ihren Lieblingsort?
Der Lieblingsort und zugleich seit meiner Kindheit mein
Territorium war der Teil von Karlsbad, der Vyhlídka (die Aussicht)
genannt wird. Die Aussicht von hier aus auf das historische
Kurviertel ist hinreißend. Links das imposante Grandhotel
Pupp, weiter das Stadttheater, das Gebäude des Sprudels und die
Mühlbrunnkolonnade. Auch heute spaziere ich an Orten, wo ich
mich mit Nostalgie an die Jahre, als ich noch ein Junge war.
Welche Beziehung haben Sie zum Grandhotel Pupp?
Das Grandhotel Pupp wurde ein Bestandteil meines Lebens. Ich sah
es aus meinem Kinderzimmer. Manchmal habe ich das Gefühl, dass
die Arbeit in diesem Hotel für mich ein im Voraus bestimmter Weg
ist, den ich gehen muss, um meinem Leben einen Sinn zu geben.
Meine Mama behauptete immer, dass im Grandhotel Pupp nur die
Besten im Fach arbeiten. Sie wäre jetzt sicher froh. Es ist mir eine
Ehre in der mehr als dreihundertjährigen Geschichte des Hotels,
eine kleine Spur meines Wirkens zu hinterlassen. Die Geschichte,
die berühmten Gäste und die Ereignisse, die sich hier abspielten,
sind eine Verpflichtung. Hauptsächlich hängt es von den Leuten ab,
wie das Niveau der Hoteldienstleistungen ist – und ich bin wirklich
von einem ausgezeichneten Team umgeben.
Was würden Sie unseren Lesern ausrichten?
Das Grandhotel Pupp lohnt sich zu besuchen. Mit der Vielfalt der
angebotenen Dienstleistungen stellt es jeden anspruchsvollen Gast
zufrieden. Das Café Pupp bietet ein Angebot an Desserts nach der
ursprünglichen Rezeptur der Familie Pupp. Malá Dvorana, das Herz

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE F&B MANAGER
Richard Lhoták has been working in the Grandhotel Pupp as the head of
the Food & Beverage section since 2008. He also worked as the restaurant
manager of the Grandrestaurant, the night restaurant Becher´s Bar and
the centre Becher´s Bar Rendez-vous from 1999. He was appointed
Operations Manager of the Grandhotel Pupp in August 2013.

He studied hotel management – balneology and tourism - at the Insti
tute of Hotel Management in Prague. He also graduated from the
prestigious Sommelier Academy in Valtice and took lots of courses
on gastronomic products as well as courses on human resources
management and strategic management. His credo is: We have to
understand the past to get to know the future. His hobbies are active
sport, renovation and construction works and social and political life.
He owns a collection of mechanical watches and retro apparatuses.
There are days when he leaves civilization together with his wife to
exchange it for lonely places in the Šumava Mountains.
How do you like living in Karlovy Vary?
I was born in Karlovy Vary and I have always been proud of it.
The unique atmosphere of the valley of the Teplá River together
with surrounding woods, magnificent historic buildings and visits
of famous personalities create an aura of uniqueness of this town.
I also like the modernisation of the outskirts and, at the same time,
the preservation of the original historical centre of the town.
Do you have your favourite places in the town?
My favourite place and at the same time my territory has been
a part of Karlovy Vary called Vyhlídka since I was a child. The view
of the historical spa part from Vyhlídka is amazing. The impressive
Grandhotel Pupp is on the left, further the Municipal Theatre, the
building of the Sprudel and the Mill Colonnade. I walk through some
places even today and remember my boy´ s years with nostalgia.
What is your relationship to the Grandhotel Pupp?
The Grandhotel Pupp has become a part of my life. It was within
sight from my bedroom when I was a child. I sometimes have
a feeling that the work in this hotel was predestinated to me so that
I could find my life satisfaction. My mother always claimed that
only the best in the branch could work in the Grandhotel Pupp. She
would definitely be happy now. It is an honour for me to leave just
a small trace in the more than three hundred-year-old history of
the hotel. History, famous guests and events which took place here
are a commitment. It is mainly people the standard of hotel services
depends on – and I am surrounded by a really excellent team.
What message do you have for our readers?
The Grandhotel Pupp is worth visiting. The variety of provided

offers a wide assortment of desserts made according to the
original recipes of the Pupp family. The Small Hall, the heart of
the hotel, offers a noble and peaceful atmosphere. Select meals

V druhé polovině 19. století se svět zásadně změnil. Noví návštěvníci,
bankéři, továrníci, obchodníci byli zcela jiní, než klientela, na
kterou si město zvyklo. Nebyli sentimentální, neohlíželi se dozadu,
nýbrž hleděli vpřed. V těch letech vládne na karlovarské radnici
mimořádně prozíravý starosta Eduard Knoll. Ví, co doba žádá, a dá
strhnout staré městské domy: bohatí domácí místo nich počínají
stavět paláce. A právě napodobeniny renesance, baroka, klasicismu,
francouzských zámků a německých pohádkových hradů se pak
staly nejvlastnějším, stylem karlovarských lázní.
Přichází třetí generace Puppů, děti druhorozeného a věčně pro
hrávajícího Johanna. Jeho první žena Katharina ze starého
karlovarského rodu Heilingötterů mu jich povila pět. Když zemřela,
Johann se oženil znovu a měl děti další. Je-li pravda, že některé
vlastnosti se dědí ob generaci, pak podnikavost, houževnatost
i odvahu prvního Puppa zdědil jeden z jeho vnuků, syn Johanna
a Kathariny, Heinrich Josef Wilhelm. Věděl, že právě on by se mohl
stát dědicem Českého sálu, kdyby byla naplněna dědova závěť.
Nestalo se tak. Vyučil se cínařem. A tak Heinrich, nejhouževnatější
z Puppů, zasvětil svůj život jedinému cíli: získat takové postavení,
aby mohl Český sál koupit zpátky pro svůj rod. Vyráběl jehly
a úspěšně s nimi brzy obchodoval po celé Evropě, Asii i Americe.

Nevěstu si přivedl z Lince a měl s ní pět dětí. Rychle bohatl. Za
utržené peníze skupoval části Českého sálu, stejně jako kdysi jeho
dědeček. I když neskoupil všechny podíly, získal zde rozhodující vliv
a začal hospodařit po svém. V Českém sále bylo ustavičně nabito.
V roce 1862 se v Karlových Varech konal přírodovědecký a lékařský
kongres. Heinrich Pupp nabídl městu, aby na jeho pozemku za
Českým sálem postavilo pro kongres dřevěný pavilon. Lacino
mu ho prodali – nadarmo nezasedal v městské radě. Heinrich ho
(pavilon) upravil na koncertní a kavárenský sál, slavný Cafésalon,
předchůdce dnešního Slavnostního sálu. Další podíly na Českém
sále však skupoval Heinrich skoro třicet let.
Heinrich zemřel mlád, v jedenapadesáti letech. Na svou ženu,
lineckou Therese, se však mohl spolehnout i po své smrti: podařilo
se jí skoupit zbývající dvě pětiny Českého sálu. Vše bylo tedy
připraveno k frontálnímu útoku na sál Saský, který pořád patřil
konkurentům Deimlům. Stejně jako dům Boží oko.
DIE DRITTE GENERATION - HEINRICH
In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts änderte sich die Welt
grundsätzlich. Neue Besucher, Bankiers, Fabrikanten, Geschäfts
leute, waren ganz anders, als die Klientel, an die sich die Stadt

gewöhnte. Meistens waren sie nicht sentimental. Sie blickten nicht
nach hinten, sondern nach vorne. In diesen Jahren regierte auf
dem Karlsbader Rathaus ein außergewöhnlich voraussichtlicher
Bürgermeister Eduard Knoll. Er weiß, was die Zeit verlangt,
und läßt die alten Stadthäuser abreißen: die reichen Hausherren
fangen an, an Stelle von ihnen neue Paläste zu bauen. Und gerade
Kurpaläste, Nachahmungen von Renaissance, Barock, Klassizismus,
französischer Schlösser, deutscher Märchenburgen, gerade dieses
Spiel auf etwas, das man nicht ist, wurde dann zum ureigensten,
aller echtesten Stil des Karlsbader Kurortes.
Im Spiel befindet sich die dritte Generation der Pupps, die Kinder des
zweitgeborenen und ewig verlierenden Sohns Johanns. Seine erste
Frau Katharina, aus der alten Karlsbader Familie der Heilingötter,
gebärte ihm fünf Kinder. Frühzeitig starb sie, Johann heiratete erneut
und hatte weitere Kinder. Wenn es stimmt, daß einige Eigenschaften
von Generation zu Generation geerbt werden, dann erbte die
Unternehmungslust, Beharrlichkeit und Mut des ersten Pupps einer
seiner Enkel, der Sohn von Johann und Katharina, Heinrich Josef
Wilhelm. Er wußte, daß gerade er zum Erben des Böhmischen Saales
werden könnte, wenn sich Großvaters Testament erfüllen würde.
Es geschah anders. Er erlernte das Zinngießerhandwerk. Und so
widmete Heinrich, der beharrlichste von den Pupps, sein Leben
einem einzigen Ziel: so eine Stellung zu bekommen, damit er den
Böhmischen Saal für seine Familie zurückkaufen kann. Heinrich
erzeugte dann Nadeln und handelte mit ihnen erfolgreich, bald in
ganz Europa, in Asien sogar in Amerika. Die Braut holte er sich aus
Linz und hatte mit ihr fünf Kinder. Er wurde bald reich. Für das erlöste
Geld kaufte er Teile des Böhmischen Saales auf, ebenso wie einst sein
Großvater. Auch wenn er nicht alle Anteile aufkaufte, erreichte er
hier entscheidenden Einfluß und begann nach sich zu wirtschaften.
Der Böhmische Saal war ununterbrochen vollgefüllt. Im Jahre 1862
fand in Karlsbad der naturwissenschaftliche und ärztliche Kongreß
statt. Heinrich Pupp bot der Stadt an, auf seinem Grund hinter dem
Böhmischen Saal für den Kongreß einen hölzernen Pavillon zu
erbauen. Heinrich baute ihn zu einem Konzert- und Caféesaal um,
dem berühmten Cafésalon, dem Vorgänger des heutigen Festsaales.
Weitere Anteile des Böhmischen Saales kaufte jedoch Heinrich
fast dreißig Jahre lang auf. Heinrich starb jung, mit einundfünfzig
Jahren. Auf seine Frau, die Linzer Therese, konnte er sich aber
auch nach seinem Tod verlassen: es gelang ihr die restlichen zwei
Fünftel des Böhmischen Saales aufzukaufen. Alles war also auf einen
Frontalangriff auf den Sächsischen Saal vorbereitet, der immer noch
den Konkurenten Deimls gehörte. Ebenso wie das Haus Auge Gottes.

The third generation of the Pupps appeared on stage. They were
children of the younger, ever-losing Johann. His first wife Katharina,
who came from the old Karlovy Vary family Heilingötter, gave him
five children. She died soon and Johann married again and sired
more children. If it is true that some qualities appear in every other
generation, then it was Johann Georg´s grandson, Johann and
Katharina’s son Heinrich Josef Wilhelm who inherited the tenacity
and entrepreneurial spirit of the first of the Pupps. Heinrich knew
that he could have become the owner of the Bohemian Hall if his
grandfather’s last will and testament had been fulfilled. It did not
happen. He became a pewterer.
And so Heinrich, the most tenacious of all the Pupps, devoted his life
to a single aim: to win the standing which would enable him to buy
the Bohemian Hall back for his family. Heinrich started the producing
of needles and traded in them successfully troughout Europe, Asia
and America. He brought his wife Therese from Linz and had five
more children with her. Like his grandfather, start buying parts of the
Bohemian Hall with his money. Although he did not manage to buy
all the parts, he won the main part and started to manage the hotel
according to his wishes and ideas. The Bohemian Hall was always
crowded. In 1862 a natural historical and medical congress was held
in Karlovy Vary. Heinrich Pupp offered his piece of land behind the
Pupp Hotel to the town where a wooden pavilion was built. Heinrich
converted the pavilion into a concert and café hall, the famous
Cafésalon, the precursor of the present Festive Hall. However, Heinrich
needed almost thirty years to buy all parts of the Bohemian Hall.
Heinrich died at an early age too, he was only fifty-one. Yet he relied
on his wife, Therese from Linz, even after his death: she managed to
buy the remaining two fifths of the Bohemian Hall. Everything was
prepared for the frontal attack on the Saxon Hall, which was still
owned by the Deimls as well as the God’s Eye House. Everything

THE THIRD GENERATION – HEINRICH
In the 2nd half of the 19th century the world changed. The new
visitors – bankers, manufactures and merchants - were different
from the people the town had been used to before. They were
mostly practical and unsentimental. In those years, the mayor of the
town was the extraordinarily prudent and provident Eduard Knoll.
He knew what the time needed and had old houses pulled down:
rich burghers started to build palaces in their place. And exactly
these spa palaces imitating buildings in the style of the Renaissance,
Baroque, Classicism, French chateaus and German fairy-tale castles

A Thousand Tastes of Whisky
Plnění skotské
Ve značkových palírnách se plní do lahví whisky s obsahem
alkoholu 40 % či 43 % (výjimkami jsou Springbank se 46 % a Ta
lisker s 45,8 %). Někdy je stáčena z jednotlivých sudů whisky
neředěná, o tzv. sudové síle - cask strength - s obsahem alkoholu
50 % až 60 %. Lahve se nemusí plnit z jednoho sudu, ale i ze směsi
několika sudů, většinou stejného stáří, avšak vždy z jedné palírny.
Pokud doba zrání není stejná, údaj na etiketě udává stáří nejmladší
použité whisky. V současnosti si však vlastní
plnění zajišťují pouze Springbank, Glenfiddich
a několik menších palíren, takže převážná
část produkce whisky je stáčena nezávislými
plnírnami. Ty od palíren kupují celé sudy,
které buď stáčejí do lahví hned, nebo si whisky
nechávají v sudech dozrát. Velmi často ji ani
nefiltrují a plní také jako neředěnou v sudové
síle. V poslední době si naopak palírny kupují
nezávislé plnírny.
Nejstarší z tradičních plníren je William
Cadenhead, založená v r. 1842 v Aberdeenu. Plní
whisky řady Authentic Collection, Original
Collection, Chair
man’s Stock či Bond
Reserve a je také propojena se Springbank,
včetně jejích dceřiných společností
Eaglesome a Duthie’s se značkou
Samaroli. Určitě nejznámější a druhou
nejstarší je Gordon & MacPhail založená
v r. 1895 v Elgin. Tato společnost plní
whisky i pod řadou dalších názvů jako
Connoisseurs Choice (CC – znalecký
výběr), Spirit of Scotland, Private
Collection, MacPhail´s Collection, Rare
Old, Centenary Reserve, Speymalt
a pro dceřiné společnosti Sestante,
Intertrade, Meregali, Carato, Turatello
atd. Další významné plnírny pouze
vyjmenujeme: Signatory Vintage Scotch
Whisky založená v r. 1988 v Edinburghu,

V minulosti se používaly stovky druhů lahví. Jak např. uvádí Mark
Skipworth, značku White Horse lze nalézt v 600 různých lahvích.
Posléze byly lahve definovány zákonem z roku 1900 podle objemu
(v angl. FL.OZ „fluid ounces“): imperial quarts 40 f.o. (dnes 1,136 l),
26 2/3 f.o. (dnes 75 cl), half 13 1/3 f.o. (dnes 37,5 cl), quarter 6 2/3 f.o.
a mini 3 4/5 f.o. V r. 1980 byly stanoveny běžné lahve s obsahem
0,5 litru, 0,7 litru, 0,76 litru, 1 litr. Stále však existují i větší lahve:
1,5 litru magnums, 1,75 litru kingnums, 2,25 litru tregnums a největší
o obsahu 3,75 litru zvaná giant size. Konečný zásah byl proveden
v r. 1992, kdy v Evropě byla stanovena jako standard lahev o obsahu
70 cl, v USA zůstal obsah 75 cl a Japonsko používá obojí.
Die Whiskyabfüllung
Der Whisky wird in die Flaschen in den Markenbrennereien
mit einem Alkoholgehalt von 40 % oder 43 % (Ausnahme sind
Springbank mit 46 % und Talisker mit 45,8 %) gefüllt. Manchmal
wird von den einzelnen Fässern der Whisky unverdünnt abgefüllt,
mit sog. Fassstärke - cask strength – mit dem Alkoholgehalt von
50 % bis 60 %. Die Flaschen muss man nicht aus einem Fass
abfüllen, sondern auch von einigen Fässern, meistens von gleichem
Alter, jedoch immer aus einer Brennerei. Falls die Reifezeit nicht
gleich ist, gibt die Angabe auf der Etikette das Alter des jüngsten
Whiskys an. Zurzeit sichern sich jedoch eigenes Abfüllen nur
Springbank, Glenfiddich und einige kleinere Brennereien, also
wird der größte Teil der Whiskyproduktion in unabhängigen
Brennereien abgefüllt. Diese kaufen von den Brennereien die
ganzen Fässer, die sie entweder in die Flaschen gleich abfüllen, oder
sie lassen den Whisky in den Fässern nachreifen. Sehr oft filtern sie
ihn nicht und füllen ihn auch als unverdünnt in Fassstärke. In der
letzten Zeit kaufen die Brennereien im Gegenteil die unabhängigen
Brennereien.
Die älteste von den traditionellen Brennereien ist William
Cadenhead, die im Jahre 1842 in Aberdeen gegründet wurde. Sie
füllt Whiskys der Reihe Authentic Collection, Original Collection,
Chairman’s Stock oder Bond Reserve ab und sie ist auch mit
Springbank verbunden, einschließlich ihrer Tochtergesellschaften
Eaglesome und Duthie’s mit der Marke Samaroli. Bestimmt die

Inhalt von 0,5 Liter, 0,7 Liter, 0,76 Liter, 1 Liter festgelegt. Es gibt

Scotch whisky bottling
Whisky containing 40 % or 43 % of alcohol is bottled in distilleries
which produce whiskies of brand names (with the exception of
Springbank – 46 % and Talisker – 45.8 %). Neat whisky, which is
called cask strength whisky, is sometimes bottled from individual

bottling plants.The oldest traditional bottling plant is the William

Antonín Dvořák
Hudební skladatel
Karlovy Vary byly a jsou místem setkávání osobností, šíření
myšlenek, vnímání uměleckých děl a vytváření kulturních tradic.
Spojení Karlových Varů se jménem slavného českého skladatele
Antonína Dvořáka je pro návštěvníky lázeňského města milým
překvapením. Antonín Dvořák pobýval v Karlových Varech
sedmkrát. Poprvé v srpnu 1879, naposledy v r. 1896. Setkával
se zde se svým nakladatelem Fritzem Simrockem, hudebním
kritikem doktorem Eduardem Hanslickem, ve styku byl s  ro
di
nou karlovarských skladatelů a dirigentů Josefa a Augusta
Labitzkých. V karlovarských lázeňských domech se uskutečnily

soukromé premiéry některých Dvořákových skladeb, nevšední
ohlas měla kontinentální premiéra Symfonie e moll Z Nového
světa v Poštovním dvoře 20. července 1894. Právě Dvořákovy
návštěvy Karlových Varů vytvořily základ karlovarské hudební
tradice, ke které se hlásí hudební festival Dvořákův karlovarský
podzim a Mezinárodní pěvecká soutěž Antonína Dvořáka. Také
koncertní sál v Lázních III nese Mistrovo jméno. Ve Dvořákových
sadech najdete sochu tohoto světově proslulého skladatele
od akademického sochaře Karla Kuneše. Ve Slavnostním sále
Grandhotelu Pupp zvedněte hlavu do výše: vlevo vedle pódia

Bildhauer Karel Kuneš. Im Festsaal des Grandhotels Pupp blicken
Sie nach oben: links neben dem Podium sehen Sie Dvořáks Büste,
auf der anderen Seite die Büste eines weiteren bedeutenden
tschechischen Komponisten Bedřich Smetana. Ein Appartement
(Nr. 255) in diesem berühmten Hotel erinnert an Dvořáks
Aufenthalte in Karlsbad.

uvidíte Dvořákovu bustu, na druhé straně pódia je umístěna busta
dalšího významného českého skladatele Bedřicha Smetany. Jedno
z apartmá (č. 255) v tomto slavném hotelu připomíná Dvořákovy
karlovarské pobyty.

Traditionen entstehen. Die Verbindung Karlsbads mit dem
Namen des berühmten tschechischen Komponisten Antonín
Dvořák ist für die Besucher der Kurstadt eine angenehme
Überraschung. Antonín Dvořák weilte in Karlsbad siebenmal.
Das erste Mal im August 1879, das letzte Mal 1896. Er traf sich
hier mit seinem Verleger Fritz Simrock, dem Musikkritiker
Doktor Eduard Hanslick, im Kontakt war er mit der Familie
der Karlsbader Komponisten und Dirigenten Josef und Au

Karlovy Vary has always been a place of meeting personalities,
spreading ideas, perceiving of works of art and creating cultural
traditions. The connection of Karlovy Vary with the name of the
famous Czech composer is a pleasant surprise for the visitors to the
spa town. Antonín Dvořák stayed in Karlovy Vary seven times. For
the first time in the August of 1879 and for the last time in 1896.
He used to meet here his publisher Fritz Simrock and the music
critic doctor Eduard Hanslick and was in touch with the family of
Karlovy Vary composers and conductors Josef and August Labitzký.
Private premieres of some of Dvořák´s compositions took place in
Karlovy Vary spa houses. Especially the continental premiere of
the Symphony in e minor - the New World Symphony - in the Post
Court on the 20th July 1894 met with an enthusiastic response. It was
just the visits of Dvořák that created the basis of the Karlovy Vary
music tradition which the music festival Dvořák Autumn and the
Antonín Dvořák International Contest of Singing adopt. The concert
hall in the Spa Building III bears Master´s name as well. A statue
of this world-famous composer made by the sculptor Karel Kuneš
can be found in Dvořák Park. When you are in the Festive Hall of
the Grandhotel Pupp, raise your head: you will see a bust of Dvořák
next to the stage on the left and a bust of another important Czech
composer Bedřich Smetana on the other side. One of the suites (No.
255) in this famous hotel remembers Dvořák´s stays in Karlovy Vary.

Interesting Facts about Karlovy Vary
na Tři kříže
NEDOSTAVĚNÁ DRÁHA
Nad lázeňským centrem se vypíná Buková hora, známá spíše pod
názvem vrch Tři kříže. Až sem, do výšky 554 m n.m., byla v roce
1908 naprojektována povrchová lanová dráha, respektive vzhledem
ke strmému svahu, ozubnicová. Koleje měly být uloženy místy až
v osm metrů hlubokém betonovém korytě, místy v úrovni okolního
terénu. K zahájení stavby došlo po různých sporech a průtazích až
v roce 1913, práce však byly přerušeny první světovou válkou. Po
ní výstavba pokračovala zvolna až do roku 1922, ale skončila pro
nedostatek financí a další problémy. Celková délka rozestavěného
tělesa dráhy je 500 metrů, výškový rozdíl činí 173 metry.
Dráha měla vést z Vřídelní ulice od domu č. 51 přes mezistanici
Panorama v ulici Na Vyhlídce až na vrchol Bukové hory. Odsud měla
pokračovat až k rozhledně na výšině Věčného života. Tam již od roku
1889 stojí nejkrásnější karlovarská rozhledna Goethova vyhlídka,
dříve Stefaniewarte. Na plošině u horní stanice lanovky na vrchu

Tři kříže byla dokonce naplánována výstavba horského kruhového
hotelu. Sen o monstrózním hotelu a odvážně projektované dráze se
však nikdy neuskutečnil. Na počátku 21. století se několik investorů
o naplnění plánů pokoušelo, ale žádnému se nepodařilo dílo
zrealizovat. Pozůstatky po započaté výstavbě před sto lety (betonové
koryto, můstky, podchody) naleznete ještě dnes na zamýšlené trase.
Zvolna je zarůstá mech a náletové dřeviny. Vybudovaný objekt
mezistanice Panorama v roce 1998 vyhořel. Na vrchu Tři kříže
uvidíte ještě zbytky základů horní stanice lanovky. Musíte však za
touto romantikou minulosti vystoupat pěšky...

Seilbahn geplant, beziehungsweise in Hinsicht zum steilen Hang,
eine Zahnradbahn. Die Schienen sollten stellenweise in einer bis zu
acht Meter tiefer Betonmulde führen, stellenweise am Niveau des
umliegenden Geländes. Zum Baubeginn kam es nach verschiedenen
Streitigkeiten und Verzögerungen erst im Jahre 1913, die
Bauarbeiten wurden jedoch mit dem Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges
unterbrochen. Danach ging der Aufbau langsam bis im Jahre 1922
voran, er wurde jedoch wegen mangelnder Finanzen und weiteren
Problemen eingestellt. Die Gesamtlänge der nicht zu Ende gebauten
Bahn beträgt 500 Meter, der Höhenunterschied ist 173 Meter.
Die Bahn sollte aus der Vřídelní Straße von dem Haus Nr. 51 über
die Zwischenstation Panorama in der Na Vyhlídce Straße bis auf
den Gipfel von Buková hora führen. Von hier aus sollte sie bis zum
Aussichtsturm auf der Höhe des Ewigen Lebens (výšina Věčného
života) weiterführen. Dort steht bereits seit 1889 der schönste
Karlsbader Aussichtsturm, die Goethe Aussicht, früher die Stephanie
Warte. Auf der Plattform bei der oberen Seilbahnstation am Drei
Kreuze Berg wurde sogar geplant, ein rundes Berghotel aufzubauen.
Der Traum von einem monumentalen Hotel und einer Bahn wurde
jedoch nie verwirklicht. Am Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts versuchten
einige Investoren die Pläne zu verwirklichen, niemanden gelang es
aber, den Bau zu verwirklichen. Die Überreste des begonnenen
Baues vor hundert Jahren (die Betonmulde, die Brücken, die
Unterführungen) findet man noch heute auf der geplanten Strecke.
Sie werden nach und nach mit Moos und Anflug verwachsen. Das
bereits erbaute Gebäude der Zwischenstation Panorama brannte im
Jahre 1998 aus. Am Drei Kreuze Berg sieht man noch die Überreste
der Grundmauern der oberen Seilbahnstation. Man muss jedoch zu
dieser romantischen Vergangenheit zu Fuß steigen ...

the megalomaniac hotel and the daringly designed cableway never
came true. Some investors tried to implement the plan in the early
21st century but they were not successful. Parts of the structure
which was started a hundred years ago can still be found there
(the concrete bed, little bridges or subways). They are slowly being
covered in moss and self-seeding plants. The completed building
of the interstation Panorama burnt down in 1998. You can still see
parts of the foundations of the upper station on the top of the hill
Three Crosses. However, if you want to see this romantic past, you
have to climb the hill on foot...
AN UNFINISHED CABLE RAILWAY
The hill towering above the town centre is called Buková hora;
however, people usually know it as the Three Crosses Hill. A surface
railway which was designed in 1908 should have run to its top which
lies at the altitude of 554 metres. As the hill is steep, it should have
been a rack railway. Its rails should have lain in a special bed made

porcelán
Již naše babičky a prababičky si velmi cenily porcelánového nádobí
z Karlových Varů a okolí. Porcelán byl a je používán ve skromných
i bohatých domácnostech, v luxusních hotelích i na královských
a císařských tabulích po celém světě. Výroba slavného českého
porcelánu je známa již od konce 18. století. V okolí Karlových Varů
se vyskytovaly a vyskytuje mimořádně kvalitní surovina kaolin
a jsou zde další dobré podmínky k výrobě porcelánu.
Pro všechny příznivce českého porcelánu, návštěvníky i lázeňské
hosty Karlových Varů pořádá společnost Thun 1794 na prostranství
před Grandhotelem Pupp jarní a podzimní porcelánové trhy. Pro
mimořádný zájem byly letos uspořádány i trhy letní. Ty podzimní
můžete navštívit 6.-8. září. Jejich součástí je i výstava porcelánových
servisů ve Slavnostním sále Grandhotelu Pupp. Novinkou je
návštěvnické centrum přímo v porcelánce v Nové Roli, kde máte
jedinečnou možnost seznámit se s historií továrny Thun 1794,
s výrobou porcelánu a celou plejádou výrobků.
KARLSBADER PORZELLAN
Schon unsere Großmütter und Urgroßmütter schätzten das Porzel
langeschirr aus Karlsbad und seiner Umgebung. Das Porzellan
wurde und wird in bescheidenen sowie reichen Haushalten, in
luxuriösen Hotels und auf königlichen und kaiserlichen Tafeln
auf der ganzen Welt gebraucht. Die Herstellung des berühmten
tschechischen Porzellans ist seit dem Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts
bekannt. In der Umgebung von Karlsbad gab es und gibt es
außergewöhnlich qualitätsvolle Rohstoffe (das Gestein Kaolin) und
weitere gute Bedingungen zur Porzellanherstellung.
Für alle Freunde des tschechischen Porzellans, für Besucher sowie
Kurgäste veranstaltet die Gesellschaft Thun 1794 im Frühling und im
Herbst in Karlsbad vor dem Grandhotel Pupp einen Porzellanmarkt.

Wegen eines außergewöhnlichen Interesses wurde in diesem Jahr
auch ein Sommermarkt veranstaltet. Den Herbstlichen kann man vom
6. bis zum 8. September besuchen. Während des herbstlichen Marktes
werden auch die Porzellanservice im Festsaal des Grandhotels Pupp
ausgestellt. Neu ist ein Besucherservice direkt in der Porzellanfabrik
in Nová Role (Neu Rohlau), wo man eine einmalige Gelegenheit hat,
die Geschichte der Fabrik Thun 1794 kennenzulernen. Weiter sieht
man die Porzellanherstellung und eine ganze Reihe von Erzeugnissen.
KARLOVY VARY PORCELAIN
Our grandmothers and great-grandmothers appreciated porcelain
kitchenware from Karlovy Vary and its neighbourhood a lot.
Porcelain has always been used in both humble and wealthy
households, luxury hotels and on the tables of kings and emperors
all over the world. The production of famous Czech porcelain
has been known since the late 18th century. It started after the
highly secret mystery of porcelain production in China had been
uncovered and had got to Europe. There have been exceptionally
quality raw materials (kaolin) and other favourable conditions for
the production of porcelain in the neighbourhood of Karlovy Vary.
The Thun 1794 company organizes spring and autumn porcelain
festivals in front of the Grandhotel Pupp for all lovers of quality
Czech porcelain, patients and visitors to Karlovy Vary. Because of
great interest there was a summer porcelain festival this year too.
The autumn one will take place from the 6th up to the 8th September.
A part of the autumn festival is an exhibition of porcelain sets in the
Festive Hall of the Grandhotel Pupp. A novelty is a visitor centre
directly in the porcelain factory in Nová Role where you have
a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the history of the Thun
1794 factory, porcelain production and a wide range of products.
Karlovy Vary Curiosities
Beethovena (10 min. chůze od Grandhotelu Pupp. Na židovském
hřbitově má svou hrobku i rodina zakladatele sklárny Moser Ludwiga
Löwi Mosera (1833-1916).

Podzimní čas svádí k nostalgickým procházkám po pestře zbarvených
lázeňských lesích. Na jedné ze svých toulek můžete navštívit drahovické
hřbitovy. Na úbočí Bukové hory, známější jako vrch Tři kříže, byl
v letech 1864-1869 zbudován katolický, protestantský a židovský
hřbitov. Pod vysokými buky odpočívá mnoho karlovarských obyvatel,
mezi nimi i řada význačných osobností: oblíbený starosta Eduard
Knoll, který zemřel na infarkt při záchraných pracích při povodni
v roce 1890, velkovýrobce minerálních vod Heinrich Mattoni, dirigent
a skladatel Josef Labitzky, nebo lékař Gallus von Hochberger, který se
zasloužil o převedení všech pozemků s léčivými prameny do majetku
města, a proto mohla radnice stavět u zřídel kolonády a pavilony...
Jistě budete pátrat i po hrobkách rodu Becherů a Puppů. Za zmínku
stojí, že náhrobek Karla Puppa je dílem významného sochaře Hugo
Uhra, pozdějšího autora monumentálního pomníku Ludwiga van

Friedhöfe in Drahovice besuchen. Am Fuße des Hügels Buková
hora, der eher als Drei Kreuze (Tři kříže) bekannt ist, wurde in
den Jahren 1864-1869 ein katholischer, ein protestantischer und
ein jüdischer Friedhof errichtet. Unter den prächtigen Buchen
ruhen viele Karlsbader Einwohner, unter ihnen auch eine Reihe

Eduard Knoll, der an Herzinfarkt während der Rettungsarbeiten
bei dem Hochwasser im Jahre 1890 starb, der Großhersteller des
Mineralwassers Heinrich Mattoni, der Dirigent und Komponist
Josef Labitzky, oder der Arzt Gallus von Hochberger. Dank ihm
wurden alle Gründstücke mit den Heilquellen in den Besitz der
Stadt übertragen, dadurch konnte das Rathaus bei den Quellen
Kolonnaden und Pavillons errichten... Sicher werden Sie auch
die Grabmäler der Familie Becher und Pupp suchen. Es ist
erwähnenswert, dass das Grab von Karl Pupp ein Werk des
bedeutenden Bildhauers Hugo Uher ist, des späteren Autors des
monumentalen Denkmals von Ludwig van Beethoven (10 Minuten
zu Fuß vom Grandhotel Pupp). Am jüdischen Friedhof findet
man auch die Gruft der Familie Moser, wo auch der Gründer der
Glashütte Moser Ludwig Löwi Moser (1833-1916) begraben liegt.

You can go to see cemeteries in Drahovice during one of them.
A catholic, protestant and Jewish cemetery was established on the
hillside of the Buková Mountain, which is better known as the Three
Crosses Hill, from 1864 to 1869. Lots of Karlovy Vary inhabitants
rest under high beeches including a number of prominent
personalities: the popular mayor Eduard Knoll, who died of heart
attack during rescue operations during the flood of 1890, the largescale producer of mineral waters Heinrich Mattoni, the conductor
and composer Josef Labitzky or Doctor Gallus von Hochberger, who
played an important part in making all pieces of land with mineral
springs the property of the town enabling so the town hall to start
building colonnades and pavilions
there... You will surely want to find the
tombs of the Becher and Pupp families.
It is worth mentioning that the Karel
Pupp´s tomb is the work of the im
portant sculptor Hugo Uher, a later
builder of the imposing monument to
Ludwig van Beethoven (a ten-minutewalk from the Grandhotel Pupp). The
family of the founder of the Moser
glass factory Ludwig Löwi Moser
(1833-1916) have got their tomb in the
Jewish cemetery too.

Projděte se po Staré louce
Promenáda podél říčky Teplé směrem ke Vřídlu poskytuje
nádherné výhledy na scenerii okolních kopců, na divadelní
budovu, ale především na onen „slet dortů“, jak karlovarskou
architekturu nazval slavný Le Corbusier. Až se pokocháte pohledy
vzhůru, hledejte na chodníku nápisy. Před každým domem
najdete zabudovanou desku s letopočtem výstavby domu a jeho
původním názvem. Např. v domě Zelený Meloun (čp. 332) začínal
své působení v Karlových Varech Johan Georg Pupp u cukráře
Mitterbacha, jehož dceru Franzisku si později vzal za řenu.

nannte. Bis Sie sich an den Blicken nach oben erlaben, suchen
Sie am Gehsteig Aufschriften. Vor jedem Haus gibt es eine Tafel
mit der Jahreszahl des Hausaufbaus und seinem ursprünglichen
Namen. Zum Beispiel im Haus Grüne Melone (Nr. 332) begann in
Karlsbad Johann Georg Pupp bei dem Zuckerbäcker Mitterbacher
zu arbeiten, dessen Tochter Franziska er später heiratete.
Walk along Stará louka Street
The promenade along the Teplá River in the direction of the Sprudel
provides wonderful views of the scenery of surrounding hills, the
theatre building and, first of all, the “meeting of cakes” as the famous
architect Le Corbusier called the architecture of Karlovy Vary. When
you feast your eyes on the views up, look for inscriptions on the
pavement. There is a small slab fixed in front of each house which
bears the year in which the house was built and its original name.
E.g. Johann Georg Pupp started his activities in Karlovy Vary in the
Green Melon House (No. 332) at the confectioner Mitterbach´s,
whose daughter Franziska he later married.
Zajděte do Galerie umění
Půjdete-li kaštanovou alejí od Grandhotelu Pupp proti proudu říčky
Teplé, dojdete ke Galerii umění. Původně zde bylo živé obchodní
korzo s mnoha krámky karlovarského Spolku živnostníků. V říjnu
1910 město rozhodlo vybudovat na tomto místě novou budovu
zahrnující butiky a také uměleckou Kunsthalle. Až v roce 1953
rozhodl stát o zřízení galerie jako specializovaného muzea umění
a sbírkové instituce. Galerie umění tedy letos slaví 60 let od svého
založení. První patro galerie prezentuje sbírkové fondy českého
umění 20. století a představuje díla klasiků českého moderního
umění. V přízemních sálech galerie se pořádají výstavy především
současného výtvarného umění.

Ursprünglich war hier ein lebhafter Geschäftskorso mit vielen Ständen
des Karlsbader Gewerbeverbandes. Im Oktober 1910 entschied die
Stadt, an dieser Stelle ein neues Gebäude mit Boutiquen und einer
Kunsthalle zu errichten. Erst im Jahre 1953 entschied der Staat eine
Galerie zu errichten, ein spezialisiertes Kunstmuseum mit einem
Institut für Sammlungen. Die Kunstgalerie feiert also in diesem
Jahr 60 Jahre ihres Bestehens. Im ersten Stock der Galerie zeigt man
eine Sammlung der tschechischen Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts und
stellt Werke der Klassiker der modernen tschechischen Kunst aus.
Im Erdgeschoss der Galerie veranstaltet man in den Sälen vor allem
Ausstellungen der gegenwärtigen bildenden Kunst.

If you walk along a chestnut alley from the Grandhotel Pupp up the
Teplá River, you will come to the Art Gallery. There was originally
a lively promenade with lots of shops here which were the property
of the Karlovy Vary Association of Trade People. In the October of
1910 the town council decided that a new building with boutiques
and also a Kunsthalle would be built here. But it was only in 1953
that the state decided that a gallery would be established here
which would be a specialized art museum and, at the same time, an
institution housing collections. This year the Art Gallery is going to
celebrate its 60th foundation anniversary. The first floor of the gallery
offers collections of Czech art of the 20th century and presents works
by the classics of Czech modern art. Exhibitions of prevailingly
present art are mounted in the halls on the ground floor.
