RNDr. Jan Ježek, CSc. celebrates seventy years of age in 2015. His whole professional
career was tied to the Department of Entomology at the National Museum in Prague, where
he worked as a researcher and curator of the Diptera collection during 1967–2011. He is
known specialist on the Diptera families Tabanidae and Psychodidae.
Jan Ježek was born on 3rd February 1945 in the city of Nymburk, where he attended primary
school and secondary school of general education completed by final exam (“maturita” in
Czech) in 1962. From 1962 till 1967 he was a student of Systematic Zoology at the Faculty of
Science at Charles University in Prague. His Master thesis was focused on larval morphology
of selected species of Czechoslovak Tabanidae under the supervision of Milan Chvála. He
started to work at the Department of Entomology on 1st November 1967 as a postgraduate
researcher and simultaneously did post-gradual candidate studies (equivalent to PhD study)
under the supervision of J. Doskočil at the Faculty of Science at Charles University in Prague.
He defended his dissertation entitled “Taxonomy of the tribe Mormiini End., Paramormiini
End. and Psychodini End. (Diptera, Psychodidae) from Czechoslovakia” and obtained a CSc.

(candidate of biological sciences) title in 1982. In 1979–1992 Jan Ježek served as the head
of the Department of Entomology. He worked as a researcher and curator of the Diptera
collection until his retirement in 2011.
Jan Ježek is scientifically interested mainly in taxonomy of non–biting moth flies (Diptera:
Psychodidae), larval morphology of Tabanidae, and taxonomy, faunistics and distribution of
adult Tabanidae. Jan is known to be a very passionate field worker and he spent a significant
amount of his working time by collecting flies in the field. He attended two collecting expeditions to Iran (1973, 1977) and many other collecting field trips. He visited Caucasus, Greece,
Bulgaria, Slovenia, Poland, France, Italy, Germany and other mainly European countries. Jan
undertook countless field trips to many Slovak and Czech localities, mainly during research
of the dipterous fauna of various natural protected areas.
Jan Ježek was one of the most faithful participants of the Czech and Slovak Dipterist
Seminars; he attended the very first seminar held in Nitra (Slovakia) in 1969 and all further
seminars except two until his last participation in Cikháj (Czech Republic) in 2009 (Fig. 4,
20th Seminar of Czech and Slovak Dipterists). His participations were always accompanied
by oral presentation about his current research and Jan often published the presented results
in the proceedings of these seminars entitled Dipterologica bohemoslovaca.
Jan Ježek is very actively cooperating with the current staff of the Department of Entomology and regularly appears at our department, except for the summer months when Jan with
his wife Věra enjoy their cottage in the foothills of Orlické hory Mts.
