MAIN SECTOR EVENT IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE AND IN
4th-9th October 2015 - Hotel ASTAREA, Mlini (City of Dubrovnik - Croatia) MAIN SECTOR EVENT IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE AND IN MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES How to Integrate Best Resources: The Sea, The Forest and The Green Economy 6 Sector Conferences 500 Participants in 6 days Conference on the Development and Modernization of Production - RIM Conference on Timber, Forest and Wood Products Trade Wood-based Energy Goes Global Conference Conference on Marketing in Wood Processing Industry Scientific Conference WoodEMA Conference on Design, Furniture and Creative Industries www.adriatic-wd.com WHAT IS AWD? Adriatic Wood Days (AWD) comprises six thematically related and yet programmatically separate international conferences in the field of forestry, wood processing, energy from wood, furniture production and creative industries. In Dubrovnik, more than 500 participants, leading experts from business, academia, politics and the media will analyze situation in these sectors and seek optimal solutions for improvement opportunities. AWD is the largest and most comprehensive sectoral event in this part of Europe, and the participants will adopt conclusions and propose recommendations to decision-makes of sectoral policies at the regional, European and global level. IMPORTANT SECTOR DISCUSSIONS WILL BE INITIATED IN DUBROVNIK AWD will present market developments and show the trends in the related subsectors to the sector companies, their owners and managers. It is a good chance for the officials in the EU and national institutions, especially those responsible for the preparation of future policies and strategies, to meet with stakeholders, sector associations, clusters and non-governmental sector, to exchange useful ideas and expert opinions. AWD will give an insight into the existing technological equipment of the sector and provide an opportunity for suppliers of technologies and services for the presentation of innovative solutions that will increase the competitiveness of the sector. Dubravka Šuica Tihomir Jakovina Jean-Marc Jossart European Parliament, Croatian MEP Croatian Government, Minister of Agriculture European Biomass Association (AEBIOM) Secretary General Topics of forestry, wood processing and environmental protection are significant to us. Recently I participated in an exchange of views with the European Commissioner Cañete about the directive on trading with greenhouse gas emissions. It is also important to establish the Energy Union, energy security and efficiency, as well as R&D projects. The intention of the whole sector and the Government is as higher added value in the production of wood processing. All indicators point to further growth of wood processing sector and the government has given strong support to this industry, which is one of most important industry sectors. ASSESSMENT OF THE SITUATION IN THE SECTOR WOOD AND FORESTS CAN IMPROVE EUROPEAN ECONOMY Sustainable forest management provides a good basis for the development of related industries in the EU. The situation in the sector is different in some parts of Europe, but experts agree that this sector has one of the best prospects, especially in the context of highlighting the important role of the future European green economy, of reducing emissions and emphasizing of environmental protection. Great perspective is in creativeindustries, which can use wood in a clever way for new growth and thus additionally strengthen the global position of the EU economy. Tonino Picula European Parliament, Croatian MEP I have sent a request to the European Commission regarding the plan to propose the guidelines for the regulation of private forests in order to prevent uncontrolled devastation of forests and illegal activities associated with the stealing of wood. I cited some examples of theft and devastation of roads in Croatia due to the unclear division of competence. Wood that is illegally cut most often is transported to neighboring countries where this question is regulated more clearly. Zdenko Bogović Croatian Association of Private Forest Owners, President Private forests may be the basis for new employment in rural areas. We are committed to greater promotion of sustainable forest management and we want to use our resources in the best possible way. It is necessary to find new marketing channels for the sale of logs and biomass from private forests and in Croatia, we have about 600,000 forest owners who are not sufficiently motivated. Biomass is underutilized as environmentally friendly source of energy. Europe is the main export market for wood pellet manufacturers from North America, but the market still has too little information on energy subsidies and EU programs. AEBIOM also has members in Southeast Europe. Adem Fetić Montenegro, Ministry of Agriculture Assistant Minister We will be sure to join the regional initiative because we want to acquire new knowledge on rural development and active role of forestry and wood processing in the European policies. Through the existing cooperation we have exchanged a lot of interesting and useful data that we transfer to our industry. AWD LAUNCHES KEY ISSUES AWD wishes to emphasize the environmental and socio-economic potential of wood processing, which in Europe is becoming increasingly important, because the wood is processed in rural areas, which saves millions of jobs. For this reason, the forestry and wood processing is increasingly seen as a holistic, unified and integrated sector with great potential. AWD calls for greater cooperation in the application of technological innovation, greater mobilization of wood raw material and prevention of illegal logging in the EU Member States. It promotes neighborly and regional cooperation and a better exchange of good practices between northern and southern EU countries. AWD opens up the topic of the development of guidelines for the principle of cascade use of wood since the part of the stakeholders considers that it should not be legally binding. AWD raises the question of a larger and more efficient use of European funds, which are already available to the sector, and first of all it refers to funds for smart specialization and rural development. Josip Leko Silvia Melegari Croatian Parliament, President European Organization of the Sawmill Industry (EOS), Executive Secretary The wood industry is a carrier of today’s development of Croatia, and this is evidenced by the fact that it has a share for approximately of ten percent of total Croatian exports. Wood processing industry can create jobs. The Government and Parliament have recognized this fact by including this industry in the development strategy of Croatia. I expect that we will continue to receive good economical and development initiatives from this industry. As a renewable and recyclable material, wood is ecologically efficient throughout its life cycle. Constructing a wooden multi-storey building, or a single unit family house, consumes less energy and produces less carbon dioxide and other emissions than the construction of a building with a concrete frame. Moreover, the wooden structures also act as a carbon sink. Member states should enhance and boost the consuption of wood products Conference on the Development and Modernization of Production - RIM Conference on Timber, Forest and Wood Products Trade The thematic emphasize of the conference is the development of the sector, which international experts consider to be essential for the survival of many companies, especially in the context of growing global competition. Greater cooperation in technological innovation, mobilization of knowledge and scientific resources is necessary. Globally successful companies and nations stand out with the investments in R&D and the application of the latest technological solutions. Countries in the SEE region are far behind considering the application of the latest technological solutions in industrial production. The conference will encourage a discussion on the available quantities of raw material and all elements of timber and wood trade. Should forest resources will be primarily available to European industry, for production of the leading global products, such as the sophisticated parquet flooring, furniture or energy-efficient windows, or forest resource should be seen in the context of EU climate and energy targets? Trading companies consider timber mainly as a quality and required raw material, especially in China and in the rest of Asia. In SEE there is a similar commercial approach with some strategic thinking involved, while the creative lobbies and non-governmental environmental sector are in the minority. Participants Structure: Scientists, representatives of universities, business sector, representatives of the local government unis and national government, the authorities, professional media in BiH and other countries of the region Participants Structure: Timber, veneer and forest-based products traders, private forests owners, state forests representatives, economists, transporters, shippers, certifiers, quality controllers, representatives of local government units, customs and universities MAIN TOPICS MAIN TOPICS 1. Application of New Technological Solutions The dynamics of applying new technologies is important for the future of the sector. In many cases companies don’t have the right information about technological innovations so the good interaction between producers, technology suppliers and the scientific community is expected. 1. Available Quantities of Raw Material in SEE It is estimated that in the region there is over a 20 mil. m3 of timber raw material available for sawmills and over a 30 mil. m3 of wood intended to the production of energy. It is a serious potential for the future development of the sector. 2. Automation in the Wood Processing The use of automated processes is included in the European program of so called smart specializations that offer co-financing of expensive technology investments, which is an important support to producers, while automation itself ensures high production cost savings, which affects the competitiveness on the market. 2. How to Mobilize Logs from Private Forest Trade with the raw material from the private forests is a very unregulated area. There are millions of cubic meters of additional raw material coming from grey area. The process of motivating the forest owners should be continued and the models of timber trade should be improved. 3. New Materials in the Furniture Manufacture The backbone of technological innovation along with new machines are new materials that allow more comfortable and easier design of new products and better performance of modern forms in furniture pro- duction. New raw materials also mean a different combining and applying of composite materials. 3. Trends in Timber Trade on Overseas Markets Relatively favorable developments on the Asian markets go in favor to the European timber that is quite popular. European sorts, particularly hardwood beech and oak, are very competitive in relation to tropical sorts. Softwood is quite popular on the Arab market. 4. A Modern Solutions of Tools, Fittings and Equipment Without the quality tools it is not possible to produce a competitive product, so the several topics at the conference will be related to the presentation of the newest tools and equipment presented at this year’s leading sectoral fairs, such as LIGNA or INTERZUM in Germany. 4. The EU Timer Regulation (EUTR) and Illegal Timber The EU wants to control the origin of timber and prevent illegal trade. This proactive approach implies the adoption of legal restrictions and control, and the individual Member States have also an important role. 5. Research and Application of Sector Innovation Innovations are an important tool for improving business in the forest-based sector, especially in the manufacturing companies in the wood processing industry. It is necessary to strengthen the implementation capacity of innovation in the primary and secondary wood processing, as well as in individual business processes and services. 5. The Importance of the Transport and Logistics Transport of timber and wood-based products plays an important role in international competitiveness, and the existing trade and the exchange of other goods with Asia are affecting the price of transport. Quick manipulation and overall logistics can boost timber trade and make it globally accessible. Faculty of Engineering, University of Bihac, Dean (BiH) Europe is recovering after the recession and represents an progress-engine in some domains of the entire global sector. Our conference follows global trends and we process many R&D topics that are interesting to the scientific community and representatives of research institutions. We would like to see a greater number of participants from manufacturing companies. Prof. Fadil Islamovic, PhD. 6.10.2015 (Tuesday) 09.00 – Begin of the Second Day 12.30 – End of Lectures 13.00 – Lunch 14.00 – Excursion to Dubrovnik and Free Activities Prof. Salah Eldien Omer, PhD. Faculty of Engineering, University of Bihac, Professor (BiH) Faculty of Engineering, University of Bihac, Professor (BiH) Constant cooperation of the business community and the educational sector can provide a smart and sustainable management of the labor market and can respond to market needs for qualified and competent experts. Topic of the rationalization and modernization can strengthen the knowledge transfer, competencies and skills which are necessary in the sector. Knowledge transfer is a slow and an expensive process, and it is almost impossible to achieve it individually in companies, so the universal model of the sectoral education is preferred. I expect that the conclusions of this conference will strongly effect the planning of production processes. 06.10.2015 (Tuesday) 10.00 – Official Beginning of the Conference 10.30 – Lectures (First Day) 13.00 – Lunch 14.00 – Lectures (Part Two First Day) 17.00 – End of the First Day of the Conference Niels Janzen, PhD. Winfried Suess Thünen-Institut of International Forestry and Forest Economics (Germany) Potentials of forestry and sawmilling in Germany are big, and there are great expectations about the further development of the sector, in terms of connecting rural development, energy from wood, and also export of our woodbased products on the global market. Clusters can play an important role. WORKSHOP 07.10.2015 (Wednesday) 09.00 – Second Day of the Conference 12.30 – Conclusions and Closing Remarks 13.00 – Lunch 14.00 – Workshop “Future of the Forestry in SEE” 16.00 – End of the Workshop Austrian State Forests, Senior Consultant (Austria) We applied more than 250 successful projects in the field of forestry and forest management in 50 countries worldwide. I am a specialist in forest management and forest policies, and my regional focus is on Central and Eastern Europe, West and South Asia (Caucasus, India) as well as on Southern Africa. Draško Brnić Hercegbosnian Forests, Director (BiH) We closely follow what is happening in our EU neighborhood. In the Region there are positive examples of sustainable forest management. In BiH is also visible a slight improvement, even though we are missing the law on forests, and that disables some important processes in forestry. Demand for timber and raw material is quite good. The Future of Forestry in Southeast Europe The workshop will be held during the conference. Discussions will be related to the situation in forestry, but also to a number of sectoral challenges. It is important to highlight the fact that the forestry in the EU is relatively stable and with potential, while in the countries of SEE sector companies do not have stable business. At the EU level, forests cover 40 percent of the surface and are an important ecosystem, but can also become a source of wealth for owners and local people and provide green jobs, which is one of the principles of a new European forestry strategy which will also be in the focus of the workshop. Detailed workshop programme with lectures and speakers is available on the website or by the Organiser. Wood-based Energy Goes Global Conference Conference on Marketing in Wood Processing Industry Biomass significantly reduces CO2 emissions and the use of biomass and wood-based fuels is environmentally neutral. Biomass is a truly global issue. There have been discussions lately about the credibility of the bioenergy sector in the EU because some groups advocate for limited use of certain products, and a part of the wood-based industry sector advocates for a new redistribution of resources. The bioenergy sector has tremendous growth, especially in the field of investments, but the greater harmonization of industrial policies and cascade use of wood is necessary. Promotion of wood is a process, long-term effort to highlight the benefits, above all green and developmental charachteristics of the sector. It is encouraging that the wood and the forest are more positively emphasized in the European policies of environmental protection and emission reductions. People have great expectations of the green public procurement in which process many public buildings can be equipped by wood products that reduce CO2 emissions and its production opens new “green jobs” in rural areas. There are a number of wood products that can approach to numerous market niches in a smart way. Wood is good! That is the regional slogan. Participants Structure: Chipboard, wood chips and forest biomass producers, briquettes and pellets producers, cogeneration plants, technology suppliers, engineers, consultants, energy agencies, banks, funds, local government units, European and national associations Participants Structure: National associations, different campaigns, international organizations (FAO, UNECE, WB, UNDP), development banks, marketing specialists, scientists, researchers, production companies, the media/journalists MAIN TOPICS MAIN TOPICS 1. Situation on the European Pellet Market Production of wood pellets is increasing, although in Europe, which is the main world market for pellets, one can feel the lack of energy raw materials. At the same time, there is a strong interest of suppliers from other continents, for example from North and South America. 1. Promotion of Building with Wood in the Mediterranean Countries The use of wood in construction is not a new initiative, since there are thousands of successful projects that highlight the benefits of building with wood that has dominated in the history. It is necessary to restore the building with wood and the Mediterranean area is the first opportunity. 2. Great interest in Cogeneration and Energy from Wood EU energy policy and focus on renewable energy encouraged the development production of energy from wood. Many Member States have not yet achived the goals of 20:20:20 energy goals, and the Commission has further boosted the expectation goals until 2030. 2. The Importance of the Arrival of IKEA on the SEE Market The opening of the first IKEA store in the Southeast Europe encourages numerous processes and changes in the distribution and presentation of furniture and strengthens the culture of selling well-designed products. Without a doubt, this is an important project from a marketing standpoint. 3. District Heating with Biomass The systems of municipal heating systems are not well developed in most countries, although there are some good examples, such as Austria, where the use of the biomass is a part of the national energy policy, which contributes to rural development and the reduction of CO2 emissions. 3. Wooden Barrels - A Combination of Wine Making and Wood Processing One underused tool is a combination of wood and wine industry, which in a global level gets new supporters. Wine culture is increasingly adopting new consumers such as Chinese, and this situation opens up new opportunities for the promotion of wooden barrels, especially those of barique quality. 4. EU policies: Proposal of the New Energy Strategy The EU has a very active approach when it comes to energy policies and similar strategies, so they are currently developing strategies for heating and cooling. Representatives of the sector and NGOs have the ability to influence the future energy policies and strategies. 4. Review of European Campaigns for Greater Use of Wood For decades last very successful national and regional campaigns that provide important contributions to increased use of wood and strengthening of results of the industrial sector. Their impact is supported by the scientific community and the producer companies, and the results have been very successful. 5. Planting of Fast Growing Forests - a Powerful Energy Potential The opinions of the experts are still not fully harmonized regarding the intensive planting of energy forests, which would reduce the need for raw material. It is necessary to ensure the appropriate incentives and criteria regarding the planting of non-native species in the EU. 5. Fair - Still the most Powerful Tool in the Marketing and Promotion of Wood and Furniture Of all the sales techniques, presentation at fairs still remains a backbone to many companies, despite an increase of online sales and web promotion. Fairs adapt and offer new content in the promotion of wood and wood products and the European sector trade fairs have good results. Featured Topic: Montenegro forest, timber industry and Bioenergy sector study, Featured Topic: Results of the Project “RenewSchool” on the Application of Wood in Schools opportunities and challenges for investors and decision-makers PROGRAMME 08.10.2015 (Thursday) 09.00 - Conference Opening 10.00 - Workshops and Panel Discussions 13.00 - Lunch PROGRAMME 7.10.2015 (Wednesday) 10.00 – Official Opening of the Conference 10.30 – Scientific Lectures and Presentations 13.00 – Lunch 14.00 – Lectures and Panel Discussions (Second Part) 17.00 – End of the Conference Prof. Richard P. Vlosky, PhD. Louisiana Forest Products Development Center, Forest Products Society, Vice-president (USA) Biomass has a great energy potential. The available resources, compared with the current use of biomass, indicate that only about two-fifths of the existing energy potential of biomass is used at the global level. In most countries, the current use is clearly below the available potential. Georg Binder Alberto Alessi pro:Holz, Director (Austria) Višnja Jurnjak Holzcluster Steiermark, Project Manager (Austria) In the countries of Southeast Europe there have been numerous efforts to improve the use of wood for energy purposes. The situation can be also improved by EU projects, which can significantly help to strengthen the capacities of local companies and institutions. Raoul Cvečić Bole The Association of Pellet, Briquette and Wood Biomass Producers, President (Croatia) Energy from wood has a great potential but is still underutilized in all countries of the region. In general, there is a problem in the treatment of pellets and other wood-based fuels, which are not classified as the strategic energy products in the state documents. Project Wood Days was realized this year in Zagreb and we are satisfied with the results. Promotion of wood has no alternative, because the wood is proved as an essential material in construction. Topic of the Mediterranean is also interesting. WORKSHOP 14.00 - Scientific Lectures and Presentations 16.30 - End of the Conference 17.00 - Workshop: The Role of the Clusters in Strengthening of Wood Processing and Forestry Sector Materialegno Magazine, Architect (Italy) In Italy, wood is seen as a traditional material, but it needs further promotion of its benefits and use. This refers to possible applications in urban as well as rural areas. Wood is sustainable and economically advantageous material for construction. Silvo Pritržnik Forest Company Slovenj Gradec, Director (Slovenia) We are committed to the use and processing of wood near the forest, so we started a company Lesoteka Houses that produces modern houses based on cross-glued panels and solid wood. At the moment we mainly build in the Carinthia, but we export the houses to Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The Role of Clusters in Strengthening of Wood Processing and Forestry Sector A special workshop will be held as a part of the conference. Clusters are an increasingly common form of association in the sector, because the associated companies show great interest in the common competitive topics, such as custom-made education, transport, custom machine building, specific offers of designers and strategies for export to foreign markets. In all these areas the synergy is achieved and all affiliated companies jointly solve key challenges. Wood clusters in Croatia have a successful collaboration with partner clusters like Holzcluster Steiermark, but also with Slovenian wood cluster and colleagues from the Basque country, Serbia, Bosnia and Hungary. Scientific Conference WoodEMA Conference on Design, Furniture and Creative Industries The scientific and research community does not see the forest, wood and wood products as isolated entities, but connects them holistic with other priority areas and policies, such as rural development, environmental protection, climate change, energy production from wood, trading with CO2 quotas or classical timber trading in overseas trade. Scientists traditionally analyze possible directions of the development of the sector, the application of modern technology, modern design, robotics and smart specializations. Creative sector indicates enormous growth in the future, and the design is an opportunity for the future. Creativity involves powerful craft potential, which must be able to produce all that creativity created. Here lies the serious problem of the deficit of basic occupations, such as carpenters or upholsterers. Promotion of good design and furniture can go with the help of the tourism and hotel sector, which is emerging in the Mediterranean countries as a backbone of future of economic development. Participants Structure: Members of the association WoodEMA, scientists from the regional, global and of European universities, sector companies, experts in economics in forestry and wood processing Participants Structure: Designers, creative and technical directors, architects, designers, manufacturers and retailers of furniture, representatives of universities and secondary school systems, scientists, the media/journalists MAIN TOPICS MAIN TOPICS 1. Building with Wood and Energy Efficient Houses Scientific approach, research, analysis and measurement of actual energy effects are helpful for market evaluation of wooden houses, whose consumption rises. It was found that children in classrooms of wood have better concentration and less stress than in the objects built with other materials. 1. Cooperation of Designers and Manufacturers The ooperation between designers and manufacturers of furniture has always carried a burden of complicated relations and appreciation, so the conclusion is that the human factor will be crucial. Some new models to encourage cooperation should be found, through institutional support or informal networks. 2. The Application of Innovation in Wood Processing Export and global competitiveness of the sector can be based on the increasing use of innovative solutions, as in a production environment, so in the management processes. Innovations are usually linked with the development of the design and promotion in the wood processing and furniture production. 2. Promotion of Design in Public It is a difficult task that is yet to come. In Europe, there are different levels of national and professional perception of good design. In addition to appearances at the world’s established furniture fairs it is necessary to continue to encourage young designers competition and provide additional funds for their work. 3. R&D and Quality of Wood Products Certification is an effective tool that emphasizes quality products from wood originating from forests with responsible management, as it follows the flow of wood from certified forests to a final product. Process of product development is time consuming, but inevitable. 3. Interior Design Cooperation with architects, joint training and presentation of the technical characteristics may lead to better positioning of quality products made of wood, especially when furnishing of the interiors with modern furniture or sophisticated solutions for doors and windows, but also regarding the production of energy. 4. Timber Trade and Wood Consumption in Europe Current data from the UNECE / FAO report confirms that the consumption of wood and paper products is stable and they forecast the growth. In recent years, the negative effects of international economic and financial crisis are present because of which there was a partial fall in the consumption of wood. 4. Wooden Products in Furnishing of Hotels Topic of furnishing of the hotels seems interesting to different groups of creative companies and designers, as well as to investors who are interested in organic products and sustainable approach to building the hotel. There is a need for institutional support in order to achieve the effects of circular economy. 5. Employment and Human Resource Management The furniture production sub-sector employes 1.1 million workers in more than 130,000 companies, mainly SMEs, with an annual turnover of about 96 billion EUR. A quarter of the world’s production of furniture is produced in the EU. These data are the basis for further analysis of human resources in the sector. 5. Role of Trade in Promoting the Furniture and Fesign The world’s leading trade fairs help in promoting and routing of design trends and contribute to the establishment of a number of market relations. The role of design competitions is also of great importance, for established designers but also for beginners.
