make the ends meet, he was put into a special prison for people who could not pay their debts and his
family lived there with him, the hard factory conditions deeply and permanently influenced Charles´s
writing, he went back to school after a year and left at fifteen, then he worked as a clerk in a lawyer´s
office, a reporter in law-courts and a newspaper reporter, in 1883 his stories were published in various
London newspapers and magazines and The Pickwick Papers made him famous nationwide
- he married Catherine Hogarth, they had ten children, she separated from him and there were rumours
about his relationship with an actress Ellen Ternan which lasted until his death
- Dickens was working hard concentrating on more than one book at a time, his novels were published
monthly or weekly in magazines – it was profitable but exhausting
- he enjoyed travelling (America, Italy, Switzerland, France) and society, his house was open to
writers, journalists, artists and actors
- he loved giving public readings from his books going around the country, he even performed in the

depressed and died suddenly at the age of fifty-eight
Other important/interesting facts: he was considered to be the finest recitalist, the best amateur

radical in his fight against social injustice – iniciated the origin of many reforms in favour of children
and the poor
