On the frontpage the old form of writing for the word of Death is to see. The opera of Ullmann uses a double title, like a mirror both main storyline representing the protagonists of the opera, the Emperor and the Death. And in Ullmann's opera Death disobeys to the Emperor the service in war, so the situation of war resisters is reflected in the opera too, that fact is well known to Ullmann himself. The text is written by Viktor Ullmann himself. Top Row (from the left): Emperor Overall (there a two models of The Great War, the penultimate and the last emperor of the Archhouse of Hapsburg, Franz Joseph and Charles), The Drummer (exists in the imperial and royal monarchy twice, both as a real person as well as a radio station for wireless transmission of news; at the theatre of war in the valley of the river Isonzo the scenery works also with the help of radio shootout, the artillery observer gets information for the shooting of the artillery battery by radiotelegraphy, so by radio from the observation aircraft; such radio shootouts will be done in the course of the last battle in the theatre of war in the valley of the river Isonzo) - Bottom Row (from the left): the Loudspeaker (who can be heard but not seen, suchs speakers are used for headphones; the artillery observer in the scenery of the front line communicates with the different stations by using such headphones, so they share their informations with the command station's own battery as well as the command staff quarters; from there the informations are also transmitted to the commander in chief, his apostolic majesty the emperor. And emperor Charles himself is personally present during the 12th and final battle in the theatre of war in the valley of the river Isonzo. And thereby he is guarded by Viktor Ullmann's father, colonel general Maximilian Ullmann and his regiment), a Soldier and a Girl (portrait of Viktor Ullmann from the year 1917; young women are part of the fighting units of the armies of Europe in The Great War), the Death (in the opera as a retired soldier; one of these retired soldiers after the war is Viktor Ullmann's father, who retires after The Great War from the active military service; the Death is also found on the role book of Karel Berman produced for the rehearsals in Terezin) and Harlequin (at the first glance it is only a theatre figure, but again traces can be found to Viktor Ullmann himself). In his opera “The Emperor of Atlantis or The Disobedience of Death” Viktor Ullmann used his experience from the battlefield of World War I in music and libretto. In music and libretto Viktor Ullmann (born 1898 in Teschen, murdered 1944 in Auschwitz) used his memory to World War I (composed at Terezín 1943/1944). In the story of the opera „Death” (dressed as a retired soldier of the AustroHungarian Monarchy) refuses to collaborate with the “Emperor” in a pre-emptive total war. Ullmann himself served as a soldier in a battery as an observer. In the artillery handbook of the Austro-Hungarian Army the function of an observer is clear defined. The observer works in cooperation with the command of the battery using telephone or radio or other optical signs. If the observer uses the telephone or the radio, he always must start with following words: “Halloh! Halloh!”. And the first two words in the opera “The Emperor of Atlantis or The Disobey of Death” are “Hallo, Hallo !” used 7 The Great War 1914-1918 is a "Sacred War" as in Ullmann's opera. In 1918 catholic philosophers promise to the participants of war "Eternal Life". by the character of the “Loudspeaker”, who describes himself as someone “who can be heard but not seen”. So this is one character coming out from Ullmann's memory to World War I. But all other characters of the opera are remembering to the battlefield experience of Ullmann. The character of the “Death” is clothed like a retired soldier. The “Emperor” is Emperor Franz Joseph (he declared the war and started the apocalypse of the 20th century) and Emperor Karl, the last emperor of Austria-Hungary responsible for the gas attack at the 12th Isonzo battle, where Ullmann was involved in October 1917. The character of the “Drummer” is the announcer of the war in the opera as it happened in reality. The character of the “Soldier” on the battlefield meets a “Bubikopf” from the other army in a combat man to man. But this “Bubikopf” is not a man it is a “Girl”. And they fell in love and the resistance against the pre-emptive total war of the “Emperor” during love starts. And in a total war everybody is involved also women. Women served as soldiers in the armies of Austria-Hungary, Germany, Serbia and Russia. So all characters of the opera based on the personal experience of Ullmann during World War I. But also in music this experience can be heard by using musical military signals (they start and finish the opera in music), by using the popular anthem of the imperial and royal house of Habsburg in text and music, or by using the choral “A Fortress is Our God”, which was also used as a soldier’s song during the Great War 1914-1918. But Ullmann is not celebrating the war in the opera; during the words of the libretto and his music he called and calls also nowadays for resistance against any form of despotism or misuse of democratic rules. 8 Sources: “The Emperor of Atlantis or The Disobedience of Death” sound recorded by Bidpai on 23rd of May 1995 at the former Imperial and Royal Fortress and Concentration Camp of Theresienstadt / Terezín (first performance on the place of the composition of the opera by ARBOS-Company for Music and Theatre) “The Emperor of Atlantis or The Disobedience of Death” filmed by Bidpai on 23rd of May 1995 at the former Imperial and Royal Fortress and Concentration Camp of Theresienstadt / Terezín (first performance on the place of the composition of the opera by ARBOS-Company for Music and Theatre) Films from The Great War: Sascha Film, Vidovanski Junak, Lobster Films, Ripley’s Film, Messter Film, Edward Mayank, Carlos Jesse. V hudbě i v libretu opery Císař z Atlantidy aneb Odpírání smrti (komponované v koncentračním táboře Terezín v letech 1943/44) zpracovává Ullmann (narozený v roce 1898 v Těšíně, zavražděný v roce 1944 v Osvětimi) svoje zážitky z první světové války. A stejnými slovy začíná i libreto Ullmannovy opery. 13 Prameny: Císař z Atlantidy aneb Odpírání smrti – zvukový záznam provedení opery, pořízený Bidpaiem, z 23. května 1995 v bývalé rakousko-uherské vojenské pevnosti a bývalém koncentračním táboře v Terezíně (první uvedení opery v místě jejího vzniku souborem ARBOS - Společnost pro hudbu a divadlo) Císař z Atlantidy aneb Odpírání smrti – filmový záznam provedení opery, pořízený Bidpaiem, z 23. května 1995 v bývalé rakousko-uherské vojenské pevnosti a bývalém koncentračním táboře v Terezíně (první uvedení opery v místě jejího vzniku souborem ARBOS - Společnost pro hudbu a divadlo) Filmy z první světové války: Sascha Film, Vidovanski Junak, Lobster Films, Ripley’s Film, Messter Film, Edward Mayank, Carlos Jesse.
