WHEN YOU HEAR …
… Dvůr Králové nad Labem, you think of one of the most beautiful European zoos with a safari and the Baroque Kuks Hospital with allegorical statues of Virtue and Vice by Matyáš Bernard Braun.
… Hradec Králové, you imagine the town below the White Tower, on the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers, with the attribute “Salon
of the Republic”, which the town received at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to its extraordinary building structures and unique
architectural concepts.
… Chrudim, you will also hear “Athens of East Bohemia”, the Puppet Museum and Puppeteers’ Chrudim Festival, which has been held here
annually for more than sixty years.
… Jaroměř, you will know it is also a town of gardens and parks and you will recall the legendary imperial fortress
Josefov and its unique underground defence system.
… Mělník, you will associate this town with the confluence of the Elbe and Vltava rivers with years
of winemaking tradition, mysterious underground corridors and the novel characters of Eduard
Štorch.
… Nový Bydžov, you will recall the third oldest Jewish ceme-tery in the Czech Republic
and traditional student festivities – “merends.”
… Polička, you will associate it with the birthplace of the world famous music composer Bohuslav Martinů, the 1220 metre long Gothic town fortification walls and
mysterious Svojanov Castle.
Please accept the cordial invitation to the towns, which the Czech kings had gradually
bestowed to the wives ever since the 14th century. The Royal Dowry Towns belong
among the most beautiful and most interesting Czech towns which you should
not miss on your travels through the Czech countryside.
The Dowry Towns were an important source of income and a place of
refuge for Czech queens. They lost their economical and political power
after the Battle of White Mountain; however, their legal form did not
cease to exist until 1918 – after the foundation of the independent
Czechoslovak state.
What do these towns offer you? Mainly an abundance of the famous history related to Czech queens – exceptional architectural
landmarks, museums, galleries, countless current cultural and social
events, festivals and celebrations. Their surroundings offer a wealth
of natural beauty, ideal places for rest and relaxation, and even for
fun. What are the Royal Dowry Towns?
The Royal Dowry Towns have been operating as a volunteer association of municipalities and towns, which present themselves together
and organize a number of cultural and social events. You can find out
more about their activities at:
www.vennamesta.cz
… Trutnov, you will imagine the picturesque foothills of the tallest Czech
mountains, the Krkonoš, a number of monuments of the Austro-Prussian wars
and the legends about a dragon related to the establishment of the town.
… Vysoké Mýto, one of the largest square squares in the country comes
to mind, plus the town fortifications with three gates and references to the
significant automobile tradition.

MĚLNÍK | Visitors to this Central Bohemian town situated on the confluence of the Labe (Elbe) and Vltava rivers are welcomed from all directions by the tower of the Church of St. Peter and Paul. Local sights testify to the rich history of Mělník, also renowned for its winemaking
tradition. The view provided from the chateau attracts considerable attention for many reasons, especially for the view of the confluence
of the two largest Czech rivers and the panorama of majestic Mount Říp accompanied by the peaks of the České středohoří (Central
Bohemian Uplands). The view of the faraway fertile Elbe Valley fills one with a feeling of grandeur and perhaps even patriotic pride in
the stunning beauty of the Czech landscape. |1|, |2|

POLIČKA | The picturesque town lies at an altitude of 555 m above sea level in the landscape of the Českomoravské vrchoviny
(Bohemian-Moravian Highlands). The unique 1220 m of Gothic walls still guard the historical centre of this gate to the Žďárské vrchy (Žďár Hills). Cultural enthusiasts are bound to appreciate the diverse offer of festivals, which are held in the hometown of the
Czech representative of contemporary music Bohuslav Martinů.
One of the oldest Bohemian castles also belongs to
Polička – Svojanov Castle. |3|, |4|

CHRUDIM | Chrudim is known as the “Athens of East Bohemia” for its wealth of cultural tradition that still exists today. The town with a population of twenty thousand already beckons visitors from a distance with its typical panorama dominated by the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Chrudimka River flows through the
town and the beauty of the river’s surroundings are ideal for a refreshing walk. At the beginning of July for more
than 60 years the city has become the retreat for puppeteers who come here to join the traditional Loutkářskou
Chrudim (Puppeteers’ Chrudim Festival). |5|, |6|

HRADEC KRÁLOVÉ | It is not that difficult to find out why Hradec Králové is known as the Salon of the Republic.
Noblesse architecture, a unique urbanistic concept and vision of a modern European town from the beginning
of the 20th century are all substantial reasons for such an attribute. The town on the confluence of the Labe (Elbe)
and Orlice rivers is a natural centre of spiritual life, culture and education of East Bohemians, the seat of a number
of institutions and schools and also a town of festivals. The enchanting corners of the old town, monumental waterfront and beautifully landscaped parks are just some
of the places you should not miss when you
visit Hradec Králové.|7|, |8|

History and Monuments
DVŮR KRÁLOVÉ NAD LABEM | The historical picturesque town in the foothills of the Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains
offers an extensive amount of historical, cultural and artistic monuments and it is inherently linked with the famous ZOO. You can also find out the truth about the Královédvorský rukopis (Manuscript of Dvůr Kralové) here.
The beautiful surroundings are dominated by the Kuks Baroque hospital and the fairytale dam Les Království
(Forest Kingdom). |9|, |10|
NOVÝ BYDŽOV | Thanks to its regular layout (so-called Bydžov square), this East Bohemian town is considered to be a unique example of medieval urbanism. The third oldest Jewish cemetery in Bohemia is found in
the town. In the 1740s a tradition was established here that lives on to the present - the so-called “merend”
(rag) student celebrations held at the end of summer. |11|
VYSOKÉ MÝTO | One of the oldest and most significant towns in the Pardubice Region proudly boasts a rich
history, one of the largest square-shaped squares and a preserved fortification. You can enter the historical centre through one of its three gates. In the first half of the 20th century the town became well-known
thanks to the company Carrosseria Sodomka, which belonged to the ingenious designer and coachbuilder
Josef Sodomek. |12|, |13|

JAROMĚŘ | The name of the East Bohemian town is derived from Přemysl Prince
Jaromír. Jaroměř lies on the confluence of three rivers: the Labe (Elbe), Úpa
and Metuje and it is referred to as the town of gardens and parks. However, Jaroměř can not be mentioned without reference to the former
imperial fortress Josefov, which is an inseparable part of the town.
Moreover, its unique military monuments make it a popular destination for military history enthusiasts and even a popular location for filmmakers. |14|, |15|
TRUTNOV | The second largest town in the Hradec Králové
Region lies in the enchanting foothills of the Krkonoše
(Giant) Mountains, in the valley of the meandering Úpa River.
Many monuments commemorating the Prussian-Austrian
War of 1866 are found in Trutnov and its surroundings. Above all, it is worth visiting the historical
centre of the town with many landmarks,
monuments commemorating the 1866
Prussian-Austrian war and the largest modern fort in Bohemia – Stachelberg towering above the
Trutnov-Babí municipality. A
number of events held in
the town are linked to its
legendary establishment
and tales about the Trutnov dragon – the local
Galerie Draka (Dragon
Gallery) will reveal
its secrets to you.

Ta bývala do 19. století jediným městským
zdrojem pitné vody. Je hluboká 54 m a s průměrem
4,54 m se stává nejširší známou studní v České republice. Prohlídky pod-zemí s průvodcem se konají denně.

Magic in Jaroměř? Is the medieval well in Mělnik’s underground
bottomless? And what about the dwarf of Nový Bydžov? Is the headless barber Kubíček still running around Polička’s Svojanov Castle
