The Beránek works was started in 1940 by Emanuel Beránek,
a glassmaker who had returned to his native Moravia from Nov˘ Bor
at the time Nazi marched into the Sudetenland. Beránek, with his three
brothers, used a technology producing glass so full of bubbles that he
decided to make it look intentional. This pseudo-antique glass found
buyers, however, he himself was eventually forced to close the works
down during the German occupation.
The glassworks was too small and offbeat to fit into the state industrial
policy, so it was consigned to liquidation. Beránek works had its supporters,
though, and they launched a lobbying campaign to save it.
The state retreated, and the factory, now stripped of the Beránek’s name,
was designated to be a crafts centre under The Ministry of Culture.
As it was not allowed to make the kind of glass produced by the bigger
factories, the logical solution was a new orientation towards art glass.
Beránek Glassworks factory specializes today in handmade, mouth-blown
and hot-shaped glass. The company’s production reflects the successful
synergy of glass-making crafts and artistic design. Beránek’s products
quarantee
both
uniqueness
and
quality
of
designand
will
bring
to their owner great beauty and delight. The primary product line
includes decorative vases, bowls, jardiniers, plates, candlesticks, ashtrays,
glass flowers, fruits, vegetables, animals and handfaceted sculptures.
Blue, green, brown and crystal constitute the base colours used in for making.
A rich variety of brilliant colours is then introduced usingonly the highest
quality colour rods.
Beránek’s other product line consists of line sculptures cast from molten glass.
The use of negative moulds permits the creation of highly diverse and unique
shapes of striking design.
Beránek is the only Czech glassworks focusing solely on contemporary- looking
decorative objects. This is designer glass par excellence. Every piece that bears
Beránek’s label is hand made, most of it hot-shaped without the use of moulds,
and almost all of it unconventional.

and love. It is certainly true of any human activity and it is clearly an
inseparable condition of all pursuits in the field of any artistic creation.
You cannot make do without this. To create means to be able to
identify yourself with your work, to do more than just the duty of it and
to be able to really make use of the best you can do. Work and our
total personal devotion is the basic root of everything we pursue. Nothing
goes by itself, each individual achievement is a sum of obstacles
overcome, each final perfection comes out of initial confusion,
mistakes and doubts which have to be handled persistently and with
patience. It is only natural
that he who loves his work can find the
resources within himself to make such an effort. Applied art is no
exception. It is just as difficult and requires just as much strain as any
other human activity, however, in addition to this, it has to be blessed
with a deep personal involvment as the most crucial condition of
its success.”
