1. WELCOME TO PRAGUE
Prague - historical pearl of Europe - is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is the
political, economic and cultural centre of the Czech Republic. Its historical centre reflecting
eleven centuries of history and dominated by Prague Castle has been on the UNESCO
World Heritage list since 1992. This vibrant and culturally rich city filled with great
architecture has also a world class cultural offering with countless museums, galleries and
theatres and a wonderful selection of places to eat. Unique atmosphere and superb natural
position combine to make any stay here a memorable and exciting experience.
In terms of tourism, Prague is one of the most successful European destinations. Thanks to
its strategic position as a crossroads of central Europe, Prague is easily reachable by
individual tourists as well as tourist groups. Over 5 million tourists come to Prague each year,

The legal money is the crown (CZK). The available coins are in values of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20
and 50 CZK, bank notes in values of 100, 200, 500, 1 000, 2 000, 5 000 CZK. Foreign
currencies are commonly exchanged in all exchange offices. It is recommended to exchange
money only in the official exchange offices and banks, which always indicate the current
exchange rates, and not to be cheated by a proclaimed advantageousness of an exchange
with individuals in the streets.

Medical treatment of foreigners is provided by the health centre nearest to the hotel.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS AND CUSTOMS REGULATIONS
On entering the territory of the Czech Republic, valid passport with the minimum validity of
three months is required. The EU citizens can also use their identity cards. Children up to 15
years of age must have their own passports or they must be recorded in the passports of
their parents. There is no need of an entry visa for most European countries, Australia,
Canada, the USA and some other countries. Other nationals may obtain visa in the Embassy
of the Czech Republic in the respective country. The visa cannot be obtained as late as on
the border or at the airport after the arrival in the Czech Republic. The visa duty is connected
with the registration duty, which is automatically fulfilled by the accommodation facility. The

Information on customs regulations and customs offices is available on www.cs.mfcr.cz and
in customs offices, customs directories and in the Ministry of Finance – General Customs
Directory. Foreign visitors are allowed to export from the Czech Republic, without any
permission, goods not having commercial character and regarding the commodity and the
quantity, designed to satisfy the personal needs of the traveller or gift items. No export duties
apply within EU, except for goods of commercial character. If the exported goods are
mentioned in the specifically common obligatory regulations (e.g. protection of cultural
heritage, objects of historical value, etc.), the customs offices require submitting of the
“Export permission” issued by respective institutions (this limitation also applies to EU).

Tourists, who have neither permanent, nor temporary address in the Czech Republic and
other EU countries, are entitled to the value added tax refund (tax free) when purchasing
goods in the Czech Republic.Foreigners are obliged to export goods in the time limit of 90
days after the purchase and to let this fact testified by the border customs office, to which

4. TRAVEL TO AND IN PRAGUE
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Prague has a sophisticated and well-functioning public transport system - trams, buses and
especially modern metro. The network of public transport is among the densest in Europe.
Metro
Prague Metro network consists of three lines designated by letters and differentiated by
colours: line A – green colour (Dejvická – Depo Hostivař), line B – yellow colour (Zličín –
Černý Most), line C – red colour (Letňany – Háje) with interchange stations Muzeum (lines A
and C), Můstek (lines A and B) and Florenc (lines B and C). Metro operates daily from 5 a.m.
to 12 p.m. Time interval between departures of trains is approximately 2 – 3 minutes in peaks
on working days and 4 – 10 minutes in off–peak periods.
Trams
During the day trams operate from 4.30 a.m. to 0.15 a.m. Lines 51 – 59 provide the night
operation in an interval of 30 minutes.The central interchange stop of the night lines is the
Lazarská stop. Tram timetables are placed at all stops.
Buses
Day and night bus operation is similar as the tram one; the night operation is provided by
lines 501 – 515, 601 – 607. The buses marked by a three–digit number beginning with
number three go to the farther Prague suburban zones. Bus timetables are placed at all
stops.
Funicular
The funicular to the Petřín hill (with Petřín View Tower and Mirror Maze) operates along the
route Újezd – Nebozízek – Petřín. It operates daily from 9 a.m. to 11.30 p.m. (summer
season) or from 9 a.m. to 11.20 p.m. (winter season) and runs every 10 or 15 minutes. All
public transport tickets are valid on the funicular.

Fares
Passengers can travel by means of the city public transport only with valid tickets purchased
before getting on the surface vehicles or entering the Metro transportation area.The tickets
are available at selected Metro stations, newsagent’s shops, Information Centres of Prague
Public Transport Company, hotels, travel agencies, department stores, etc. Single tickets are
also available at ticket vending machines installed at Metro stations or near some surface
transport stops. Tickets are valid only if validated in the validating machine.

TAXI
Maximum Prices in Prague territory:
travel in the territory of Prague – 28 CZK/1 km
single starting fee – 40 CZK
waiting time – 6 CZK/1 minute
The prices might rise during the year.
These maximum prices apply for all the taxis providing taxi service in the territory of the
capital Prague. Waiting time tariff includes both operation waiting (during slow drive in heavy
traffic) and waiting by request of the customer.The fare out of Prague is not limited.
Notice for Customers:
Each taxi must be equipped with firmly fixed roof–lamp with the sign TAXI.
On both front doors, the taxicabs must be marked with the registration number, company
name, and the price list containing the basic tariff, fare per kilometre and amount for 1 minute
of waiting.These prices must comply with the pre–set values in the taximeter.
After the end of the ride, the driver must give the customer a fully fulfilled receipt of the fare
payment.This document must be issued to the customer from the taximeter printer. It is
recommended to order a taxi service through nonstop dispatching centres where the
customers can be informed about the fare in advance or to use the taxi stations marked FAIR
PLACE which we recommend.

ROAD TRAFFIC
The road traffic regulations in the Czech Republic are practically the same as in other
European countries:

Driving on the right side.

No consumption of alcohol is allowed before or during driving.

Safety belts must be worn both in and outside towns and villages.

Safety seats are obligatory for children under 36 kg and/or 150 cm.

Motor vehicles must be alight all the day.

Mobile phones can be used only with hands–free devices.

The maximum allowed speed for cars is 90 km/h, in residential areas 50 km/h, on
highway 130 km/h.

To drive on highways and speed roads, it is necessary to have a highway sticker. The
highway sticker can be purchased at border crossings, post offices and filling
stations.

5. PRAGUE MONUMENTS AND ATTRACTIONS
Prague represents a unique complex of historical monuments, dominated by Prague Castle
high above the city.The historical heart of the city spreads out on both sides of the Vltava
River and consists of six parts, former independent boroughs, unified in the 18th century.
These are Old Town (Staré Město), Josefov (the preserved part of the former Jewish Town),
New Town (Nové Město), Lesser Town (Malá Strana), Hradčany and Vyšehrad. About 1 500
precious historical objects are situated only here and many other monuments can be found
out of this historical centre as well. More than one thousand years of the architectural
development marked the city with monuments of all art styles and movements: basilicas,
rotundas as well as basements of Romanesque houses, beautiful Gothic churches and
monasteries, precious Renaissance monuments. Together with the Gothic style, especially
the Baroque monuments – churches and palaces, portals and spires predominate in Prague.
The Rococo style, Classicism, Empire style as well as Historicism are also represented. The
buildings constructed in the Art Nouveau style are also admired, especially Municipal House.
Experts appreciate unique buildings of the Czech cubism era and the functionalist structures.
The artistic quality of monuments of all historical periods creates a perfect and harmonic
ensemble of the urban organism. The number of precious buildings, which are reconstructed
and opened to the public, increases every year.
The beautiful cityscape can be seen from many natural observation points or towers open
to public. The most beautiful panoramas of Prague Castle and Lesser Town are offered from
Smetana Embankment, namely from Novotného lávka.The all–round views of the whole city
are offered especially from the towers – e.g. Old Town Hall Tower, Powder Tower, Old Town
Bridge Tower, Lesser Town Bridge Tower, St Vitus,Wenceslas and Adalbert Cathedral
Tower, Petřín Lookout Tower, Belfry of St Nicholas Church, Žižkov Television Tower, but

The national cultural monument, the symbol of more than one thousand years long
development of the Czech state. Since its foundation in the last quarter of the 9th century, it
has been constantly developing throughout eleven hundred years. It is a monumental
complex of palatial, official, ecclesiastical, fortification and residential buildings from all
architectural periods. It is situated around three courtyards on the area of 45 hectares.
Originally, it was a seat of princes and kings of Bohemia, since 1918, it has been the seat of
the presidents.
Historical Buildings of Prague Castle

Cathedral of St Vitus, Wenceslas and Adalbert
The Gothic cathedral, spiritual symbol of the Czech state, was founded in 1344 in the place
of the original Romanesque rotunda by John of Luxembourg and his sons Charles and John
Henry according to the plans of Matthias of Arras (till 1352), later on by Petr Parléř (1356 –
1399).The construction lasted almost 600 years and it was definitively completed as late as
in 1929. Decorated by precious works of art it encloses St Wenceslas chapel and the crypt
with tombs of Bohemian kings. The coronation jewels are deposited here too.

Old Royal Palace
Until the 16th century the seat of princes and kings of Bohemia, built on remains of the
Romanesque Soběslav palace. Further alterations in Gothic and Renaissance styles were
initiated by important Czech kings Přemysl Otakar II, Charles IV, Wenceslas IV and Vladislav
of Jagello. The most remarkable part is the Gothic Vladislav Hall – the largest secular hall of
the medieval Prague (1487 – 1500 Benedikt Rejt) with rounded rib vault. Nowadays, it serves
as a place of presidential elections and state ceremonial events. Permanent exhibition The


Basilica of St George
The oldest preserved church structure of Prague Castle and the best–preserved
Romanesque architecture in Bohemia. Founded around 920 by Prince Vratislav I, altered in
the 12th century, its Baroque facade dates back to the 17th century. Its important parts are
Chapels of St John Nepomuk and of St Ludmila, grandmother of St Wenceslas and the first
Czech Christian martyr.

Convent of St George
The most ancient convent in the Czech countries, founded in 973 by Prince Boleslav II and
his sister Mlada for the order of Benedictines. In 1782, it was dissolved because of the
reforms of Emperor Josef II and served as barracks.

Prague Castle Gallery
Built in the 1960’s in the place of the former stables. The collections consist of the remains of
the so–called Rudolph’s collections, as well as from the later times (Tintoretto,Tizian,
Rubens, Czech Baroque art, etc.).

Mihulka Powder Tower
Forty four meters high tower, since the 15th century part of the Castle fortifications. It once
served as a gunpowder storage. Nowadays, there is a permanent exhibition “Armoury“
presenting old arms.

Rosenberg Palace (later Institute of Noblewomen)
It is open for public for the first time in history from April 2010. One part of the Rosenberg
Palace is furnished like an apartment of a noble lady living in the Institute, which was
founded by Empress Maria Theresa. The exhibition, evoking the life of an unmarried noble
lady consists of 60 items from the depository of Prague Castle in popular Biedermeier and
second rococo styles.

Golden Lane
Little houses built in the Gothic fortification wall. Since the 16th century, Castle marksmen
and handicraftsmen lived here. In the house No. 22, Franz Kafka worked in 1916 – 1917.

Daliborka
A dungeon constructed in 1496 by Benedikt Rejt as a part of the Castle fortifications. Until
1781, it served as a prison. It was named after the first prisoner Dalibor of Kozojedy.The
Dalibor’s story was set to music by Bedřich Smetana in the opera Dalibor (1868).

Queen Anne’s Summerhouse
The purest Renaissance architecture in Prague from 1535 – 1537 according to the project of
Paolo della Stella, completed by architect Wohlmut. In the Summerhouse garden, there is
the Singing Fountain made of bell metal, chiming by drops of falling water, the work of
Tomáš Jaroš from the period of 1564 – 1568. Exhibition hall.

Ball Games House (Míčovna)
Renaissance building with sgraffito decorations, situated in the Royal Garden. Exhibition and
concert hall.

Prague Castle Riding Hall
Baroque building from the end of the 17th century, exhibition hall.

Royal Garden – founded in 1534, Southern Gardens, Na Baště Garden, garden on the

The changing of guards at the gates of the Castle takes place every full hour from 5 a.m. to
midnight, (in winter from 6 a.m. – 11 p.m.), at noon with fanfares and changing of the banner.

Place of Marian pilgrimage with the replica of the Holy House – Santa Casa (G. Orsi, 1626 –
1627) and a Baroque Church of the Nativity (K. I. Dientzenhofer, 1734 – 1735), surrounded
with a cloister and chapels. In the tower, there is a chime set with 27 Loreto bells playing a
Marian song “We Greet You a Thousand Times” (each full hour from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.). The
so–called Loreto Treasure, a collection of sacral objects from the 16th – 18th centuries, is
very precious. The most famous object is the Diamond monstrance decorated with 6 222
diamonds.

The monastery of the Premonstratensian order was founded in 1140 by Vladislav II.The
present Baroque appearance dates back to the second half of the 17th and of the 18th
century (J. B. Mathey, A. Lurago, I. J. Palliardi). In its area, there is a Church of Assumption
of Our Lady (1743 – 1752), Strahov Gallery, valuable Strahov Library with many medieval
illuminated manuscripts, maps, globes and engravings, Baroque Theological Hall (1671 –
1679) and Classicist Philosophy Hall (1785 – 1794) decorated with frescos by A.
Maulbertsch.

Petřín View Tower

The sixty metres high iron tower was constructed on the occasion of the Jubilee Exhibition of
1891 by František Prášil as a free replica of Eiffel Tower in Paris. 299 steps lead to the top.
The lift provides wheelchair access to the gallery in the height of 20 m, access for senior
citizens and the handicapped to the upper gallery.

Mirror Maze

The pavilion of the former Czech Tourist Club built for the Jubilee Exhibition of 1891, later on
transferred to the Petřín Hill. In the interior, there is a mirror maze and a diorama Fight of
Prague Students with Swedes on Charles Bridge in 1648.

One of the most important Prague Baroque structures with a dominant dome and belfry
(architects K. Dientzenhofer, K. I. Dientzenhofer, A. Lurago, 1704 – 1756). The interior
decoration is also a sample of the supreme Baroque (J. L. Kracker, K. Škréta). During his
stay in Prague, W. A. Mozart played the organ here. The belfry of the church is also open to
public. It provides a view of the Lesser Town and there is a permanent exhibition Prague
Bells in its premises and the former observation post of the state secret police.

Charles Bridge

The oldest Prague bridge constructed in the place of the former Judith Bridge partially ruined
by flood in 1342. The Stone Bridge or Prague Bridge, since 1870 called Charles Bridge, was
founded in 1357 by Charles IV. According to the latest research, Master Otto commenced its
construction, which was completed by Petr Parléř in 1402. The bridge is fortified with towers
on both bridgeheads (Lesser Town Bridge Towers, Old Town Bridge Tower). From 1683 to
1928, 30 statues and sculptural groups of saints were fixed on its pillars (M. Braun, F. M.
Brokof, etc.). The length of the bridge is 515 meters; its width is 10 metres.

Lesser Town Bridge Towers

The lower tower was built in the Romanesque style in the 12th century and formed part of the
former Judith Bridge. The higher tower, younger by 200 years (1464), is related to the
Parléř’s Old Town Bridge Tower by its late Gothic architecture. Permanent exhibition: The
Prague Adept – Alchemy in the Rudolphine Period.

The entrance gate to Charles Bridge from the Old Town, the most beautiful portal of the
Gothic Europe, is the work of the Royal Building Works completed before 1380. It has a rich
sculpture decoration – emblems of the Czech Crown Countries in the time of the rule of
Charles IV, statues of St Vitus, Charles IV, Wenceslas IV, St Adalbert and St Sigismund.
Permanent exhibition: Charles Bridge, A Ray through Centuries – a short 18 minutes film on
astronomical and astrological contexts of the origin of the bridge and the exhibition Charles
IV, Emperor and King.

The spacious Baroque complex – constructed from the half of the 16th century to the half of
the 18th century. Originally Jesuit college, at present, the place of the National Library. In its
precincts, there are also the Astronomical Tower and Baroque Library open to public since
2000. The Baroque hall from the beginning of the 18th century created by K. I. Dientzenhofer
is decorated with frescos and portraits of important members of the Jesuit Order. In 1775, the
systematic meteorological and climatic observation commenced on the Astronomical Tower
and the tower has served its purposes till now.

Old Town Square
The most important square of the historical Prague. It was founded in the 12th century and
witnessed many historical events.Together with the Old Town Hall and Church of Our Lady
of Týn (see below), the dominant features of the square are Baroque Church of St Nicholas
(K. I. Dientzenhofer, 1732 – 1735), Rococo Goltz Kinský Palace with the National Gallery
exhibition The Art of Asia, House at the Stone Bell – Gothic burgess palace from the 14th
century, nowadays the concert and exhibition area of the City Gallery of Prague, and Master
Jan Hus Monument by Ladislav Šaloun (1915). In the pavement of the square, the place of
the execution of 27 Czech noblemen (21 June 1621) and the Prague meridian are marked.
Old Town Hall with Astronomical Clock

It was established in 1338 as the seat of the self-administration of the Old Town.The oldest
Gothic part of the complex with the tower, bay chapel and rich emblem decoration date back
to the second half of the 14th century. Every full hour between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. twelve
apostles appear in the Astronomical Clock (early 15th century), in its lower part, there is a
calendar board with zodiac signs by Josef Mánes (1865).The eastern neo–Gothic wing of the
Town Hall was destroyed on 8 May 1945 and has never been restored.
In the building there is the Tourist Information Centre of Prague Information Service
operating all the year round.

The most impressive Gothic religious building in Prague, constructed from the half of the
14th century to the beginning of the 16th century. In the late seventeenth century, the interior
was altered in the baroque style.The Church is interesting among others by the altarpieces
by Karel Škréta and the tombstone of the astronomer Tycho Brahe.

Josefov – Prague Jewish Town
It was founded in the 13th century; its present appearance is mostly the result of the
complete clearance of the area in 1893 – 1913, when only few of the most
important
monuments of the many centuries old history of Prague Jews were preserved. In spite of this

A Classicist building from 1781 – 1783, famous for the world first night of the W. A. Mozart´s
opera Don Giovanni (29 October 1787). Since 1799, the theatre was in possession of the
Czech Estates. On 21 December 1834, it was here, where the song “Where is my
homeland”, which later on became the Czech national anthem, sounded for the first time.
Nowadays, dramas, ballets and operas are performed here.

A neo–Renaissance building constructed in 1876 – 1884 (by architects J. Zítek, J. Schulz),
originally designed to house a picture gallery, museum collections and concert hall. During

been the seat of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. The main hall – Dvořák Hall – is worldfamous by the annual concerts of the music festival Prague Spring.

The neo–Renaissance building constructed in 1868 – 1881 as a result of the nation–wide
collections (architect J. Zítek) and rebuilt after a fire in 1883 (architect J. Schultz).The exterior

Ženíšek, V. Hynais, J. V. Myslbek, and others. It is the prominent Czech theatre scene and
its repertoire consists of drama, opera and ballet performances.

Emmaus Monastery

The Na Slovanech Monastery and Church was founded by Charles IV in 1347. It became the
centre of learning and the arts. Students of the Cyril and Method language included Jan Hus,
Hieronymus Pragensis, etc. The paintings on the walls rank among the most valuable Czech
Gothic. In 1712 the monastery and the church were modified into the Baroque style and two
lower round facade towers were constructed. In February 1945 the church was destroyed

during an air raid. Later, a modern asymmetric 32 m shell was built using white concrete
construction which is 40 cm wide (architect F. M. Černý).

A large complex of buildings, since the 14th century the seat of Charles University – the

appearance of Karolinum is a result of the alteration in 1718. On the ground floor, there are
exhibition facilities.

The Gothic complex of buildings from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, altered in the
Renaissance style in the 16th century. It includes the tower with the Chapel of Our Lady, two
Gothic halls with ribbed vaults, and a Renaissance Hall. In 1377 – 1784 it was a seat of the
New Town self-administration.The place of the defenestration of the catholic aldermen
thrown through the windows by the Prague Hussites on 30 July 1419.This event was the
beginning of the Hussite revolution.

Wenceslas Square
Business and administrative district of the city, a place where important social and historic
events take place. It was built along with the foundation of the New Town by Charles IV in

Wenceslas is surrounded by four statues of Czech patrons St Ludmila, St Procopius, St

According to the old legends, it was the oldest seat of Czech Princes, the legendary Princess
Libuše and the first Premyslides. In fact, this fortified settlement was founded later than
Prague Castle, approximately in the half of the 10th century. In the late eleventh century and
in the first half of the 12th century,Vyšehrad was the main seat of Premyslide princes and at
that time, the large–scale construction activity was performed here. In the area, it is possible
to visit among others the precious Romanesque St Martin’s Rotunda from the 11th century
(interior only for groups on reservation in advance, the Gothic Church of Sts Peter and Paul
(rebuilt in the neo–Gothic style in the end of the 19th century), the Vyšehrad cemetery, since
1869 serving as a burial place of the outstanding Czech personalities with the collective tomb
called Slavín, the underground casemates, where several original Baroque statues from
Charles Bridge are deposited.

The Benedictine monastery in Břevnov is the first and therefore the oldest monastery in
Bohemia. It was established by Duke Boleslaus II the Pious and Saint Adalbert in 993. The
monastery was subsequently rebuilt in the 11th century, and this is when the first stone
church was also erected. Extensive Early Gothic reconstruction followed after 1300. Hussites
plundered the monastery, and it incurred further damage during the Thirty Years War. The
Baroque complex and Benedictine Church of St Margret were built in stages from 1708 1745 according to the design of K. Dientzenhofer and his son. Today these buildings are
excellent examples of High Baroque architecture in Bohemia.

Industrial Palace

Originally built as a pavilion for the Jubilee Exhibition in 1891. One of the most valuable ArtNouveau historical monuments in Prague. The steel arch structure is 238 meters long with a
tower 51 meters high in the middle. The palace is accessible during exhibitions, trade fairs
and social and cultural events. The left half of the building was destroyed by a fire on 16
October 2008.
Křižík Fountain

It would be no exaggeration to say that there is nothing like the Křižík Fountain in all of
Europe. Czech engineer and inventor František Křižík designed and constructed the fountain
at the end of the 19th century. Visitors can enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime art experience as
beautiful music is accompanied by a water dance and colourful light effects. The special
water effects are controlled by a number of water circuits controlled by 50 pumps and ending
with nearly 3,000 nozzles, while the colour effects are provided by 1,248 underwater
reflectors, making the production particularly impressive at night. The 25 by 45 meter pool
can contain up to 1,650 cubic meters of water. Sound comes from 55 electric speakers. The
walls of the adjacent pavilions create an amphitheatre that can hold over 6,000 spectators,
who can watch the light and water show to classical or modern music or enjoy a stage
production.

Royal Garden was founded in 1534 and designed according to Italian models. Most of the
plants came from Italy or the Mediterranean. The garden flourished in the 16th century and
various garden architecture elements were added – Queen Ann’s Summerhouse, The
Singing Fountain, Ball Game Hall, a greenhouse, Orangery, Fig House, The Lion House, etc.
In the early 18th century, the garden was modified in the Baroque style. Several Baroque
statues by M. B. Braun have been preserved from this period. In the late 18th century, the
garden was gradually transformed into an English park and in the 19th century, most of the
fruit trees were replaced with decorative trees.
The Southern Gardens – Paradise Garden, On the Ramparts Garden, Hartig Garden
Southern Gardens are located under the southern façade of the Prague Castle. The
Paradise Garden dates back to the first half of the 16th century. Their current appearance
was designed by architect Plečnik in the 1920s, along with the On the Ramparts Garden,
which originally should have been a natural park. Hartig Garden with the Music Pavilion was
added in the 1960s. The gardens provide a breathtaking panoramatic view of Lesser Town,
Old Town and nearby Petřín Hill. The opening of the gardens is announced daily at 10 a.m.
by flourish played by the Prague Castle Guard buglers from the Hartig Music Pavilion.

Palace Gardens below Prague Castle

Palace Gardens include: Ledebur Garden, Small and Great Pálffy Gardens, Kolowrat and
Small Fürstenberk Gardens. They are located on the southern slopes under the Prague
Castle. Originally, there were ramparts in this area, but in the early 16th century the defense
system ceased to be important. Thus, the ramparts were gradually demolished and the land
sold. Subsequently, vineyards and Renaissance Italian-type gardens were created here.
Following the Swedish invasion in 1648, the gardens were reinstated and the rigid
Renaissance style was replaced by Baroque balustrade terraces lined with sculptures,
monumental staircases and numerous fountains. The terraces provide a breathtaking view of
Lesser Town and panorama of the city.

Wallenstein Garden

The early Baroque strictly geometrically designed garden built simultaneously with
Wallenstein Palace in 1623 – 1629. An impressive sala terrena forms one of its dominating
features, then there is artificial stalactite grotto, fountain with bronze statue of Venus, gallery
of bronze sculptures by Adrian de Vries – nevertheless, they are mere castings of originals,
which the Swedish army took away at the end of the Thirty Years War. In the summer period,
concerts and theatre performances are held here.

Petřín Parks

Petřín Hill ranks among the largest green areas in Prague. In the Middle Ages, there were
vineyards and fields. There have always been numerous springs on the Petřín slopes and
the water was lead via a set of tunnels to Pohořelec and to Lesser Town. Currently water is
lead to the river Vltava. In the 1930s the park was modified and now consists of Lobkowicz
Garden, Nebozízek, Rose Park, Park at the Look-out Petřín Tower and Seminary Garden. All
gardens, except for Lobkowicz Garden, are open to public free of charge.
Kinský Garden
Prague 5 – Smíchov
This 22 hectare garden is located on the southern and south-eastern slope of Petřín and is
separated with the Gothic Hunger Wall from the other gardens. The wall was built during the
reign of Charles IV. Originally, there was a forest here replaced by vineyards in the Middle
Ages. In the 1930s the garden was modified in the English style. The Church of St. Michael,
a wooden Greek Catholic church, is located in the garden as well as the Kinsky Summer
Palace housing a historical folklore artifacts of the National Museum.
The garden is open to public free of charge.

Royal Game Park – Stromovka

It covers 95 hectares and is located near the Prague Exhibition Grounds in Holešovice. It
originated during the reign of Přemysl Otakar II, who had it fenced in as hunting area in 1266.
It was destroyed during the Hussite period and reinstated during the reign of Ladislaus
Jagiello. It flourished under Emperor Rudolph II, when a unique technical masterpiece was
created here. The Rudolph Tunnel brings water from the Vltava river to the center of the park
supplying the artificial ponds here. In the early 19th century it was open to the public. The
latest modifications dates back to the 19th century when the Royal Park was gradually
transformed into the English park style. The Royal Game Park is open to the public free of
charge.

Prague Castle – long tour
Prague Castle has been the seat of Czech princes, kings, and also presidents in the modern
history of the state, since the end of the 9th century. The long tour of Prague’s most
significant monument will present to visitors not only the history and structural development
of Prague Castle, but also the personalities connected with the castle, and other interesting
things. The tour comprises all courtyards, leads around the St Vitus, St Wenceslas and St
Adalbert Cathedrals and the Old Royal Palace to Jiřské Square, from where it continues to
the Golden Lane and to Opyš. It is also possible to see some of the buildings’ interiors (St

Charles Bridge
A walk on the Charles Bridge will present the interesting history of this oldest preserved
connecting line between both Prague embankments. Special attention will be given not only
to its beautiful sculptural decoration, but also to the Old Town and Lesser Quarter bridge
towers.
Old Town Square
Old Town City Hall, the Church of Our Lady before Týn, House at the Stone Bell, Kinský
Palace, St Nicholas Church the Jan Hus Memorial can all be found on the square.
Old Town City Hall – seat of Old Town local government
The Old Town City Hall offers two tours. You can climb up the stairs to the Town Hall Tower
and enjoy a beautiful view of Prague’s historical centre from a height of almost 70 metres.
The second tour will take you through the city hall’s interior (a chapel with apostles, historical
halls and a Romanesque-Gothic underground). No less interesting is the city hall’s exterior,
dominated by the remarkable Old Town Astronomical Clock.

Powder Tower
A monumental gate leading into the Old Town. The Gothic building dating from 1475 was
designed by Matěj Rejsek. It was used as a gunpowder storage facility. At the end of the
nineteenth century it was rebuilt into its present form by J. Mocker.

Vyšehrad
Vyšehrad is the very first seat of Czech princes and kings, since the first coronated Czech
king, Vratislaus I, lived here. Also Charles IV paid close attention to Vyšehrad as a place
connected with the Přemyslid tradition. In the nineteenth century, the Czech National Revival
movement sparked interest in this place surrounded with myths. A tour will guide you through
all the interesting moments in the history of Vyšehrad, the history and decoration of the
capitular Basilica of St Peter and St Paul, significant personalities buried at the Vyšehrad
cemetery and other interesting buildings at Vyšehrad. It is also possible to visit casemates,
vaults built in the fortification, where the originals of statues from the Charles Bridge are
currently being deposited. Several viewing points offer astonishing views over Prague.
Charles Square
The square is surrounded by New Town Hall, the Church of St Ignatius and the Jesuit
College, the Faust House and a Czech Technical University building. There are also
numerous monuments on the square itself.
Emauzy – The Monastery of Slavic Benedictines
The monastery was founded in 1347 by Charles IV as a part of his plans to unify the Greek
Byzantine and Roman Catholic Churches. Benedictines got permission from the Pope to use
Old Church Slavonic in Roman liturgical services, and consequently Prague had a monastery
with Slavonic liturgy. On a tour through this unique place you can see a cloister with Gothic
paintings, a Baroque refectory, imperial chapel and Church of Our Lady.
Evening walk on Petřín
The walk starts at the funicular that will transport you to the top of Petřín hill. An evening
atmosphere may inspire you to visit the local mirror maze or the Petřín observation tower
from which you can enjoy unforgettable views of our capital.

Strahov Monastery

the
religious
order
of
Premonstratensians was established by prince Vladislav II and Olomouc bishop Jindřich Zdík
in 1140. The monastery acquired its current form during early Gothic and especially Baroque
reconstructions. Places of interest in the monastery include the Convent (Cloister,
Romanesque Halls, Chapter Hall, Winter Refectory), Strahov Gallery (a collection of Czech
and European paintings from Gothic to Romanticism), the Basilica of the Assumption of Our
Lady and historical halls of Strahov Library.
Martinic Palace and its surroundings
The tour will tell you more about this exceptionally well-preserved monument of Renaissance
architecture, its original sgraffiti decoration, late Renaissance painted ceilings and frescos. In
the palace, there is a museum of musical machines, a unique collection of orchestrions,
barrel organs, gramophones, musical boxes and other rare items from the 1870-1940 period.
St Nicholas Cathedral in Lesser Town
The cathedral, whose robust dome and slim tower form an indispensable part of the Prague
panorama, is one of Europe’s foremost Baroque buildings. It was built in the first half of the
eighteenth century and was designed by architects Christoph and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer
with the contribution of many other outstanding Baroque artists.
Troja Castle with garden
The Troja Castle is one of the most significant Baroque castles of the seventeenth century.
The Count of Sternberg invited excellent European artists to build and decorate the castle.
The main hall is connected to the garden with a monumental staircase with statues of
antique gods fighting the Titans. The castle is surrounded by a large French garden.

Kokoschka confessed their fascination with its beauty and imposing architecture. Many
writers were inspired by their hometown in their writings - Jan Neruda, Jaroslav Hašek,
Jaroslav Seifert, Franz Kafka, and Max Brod.
But Prague has always been a filmmaking city too. Filmmakers have taken advantage of the
city´s diverse architecture and preserved history to use it as a stand-in for London, Paris,
Rome, Vienna or Venice. It was Miloš Forman who opened a new chapter in Prague film
history with his Amadeus. Tom Cruise came to Prague in 1995 to film Mission: Impossible,
Daniel Craig became the new James Bond in Casino Royale filmed also in Prague.

There are many interesting castles and chateaux, medieval towns, as well as beautiful
natural sites in Prague surroundings.
Karlštejn

The most significant medieval castle, built in 1348 – 1355 under the rule of Charles IV for the
purpose of safekeeping the crown jewels and state documents. In the 16th century, it was
reconstructed in the Renaissance style and altered in pseudo–Gothic style in the late 19th
century. In Holy Rood Chapel, there is a unique collection of 132 Gothic tabular paintings by
Master Theodorik from 1360. The castle is situated 40 km south–west of Prague.

The royal Castle of Křivoklát is first mentioned around 1100.The present building is from the
second half of the 13th century; it was enlarged and fortified at the end of the 14th century
and altered in the Gothic style in the late 15th century. Thanks to all these renovations and
alterations, all phases of the Gothic style are present here. The castle is situated 50 km from
Prague.

The chateau of Austrian Crown Prince Ferdinand d’Este. It was initially a Gothic castle built
in the 14th century and then altered in the 19th century. It has a unique collection of historical

Thanks to the prosperous silver mines, Kutná Hora became after Prague the second most
important town of the Kingdom of Bohemia in the Middle Ages.There are many unique Gothic
monuments in this town, especially St Barbara’s Cathedral (1388 – 1565), one of the most
beautiful structures of the Czech Gothic, then Italian Court with the Royal Mint, where the
famous Prague groschens were coined, Stone House, and Church of St James. At nearby
Sedlec, it is possible to visit the Ossuary. Kutná Hora is on the UNESCO list of World
Cultural and Natural Heritage. The town is situated 70 km from Prague.
Nelahozeves

In 1553, a Bavarian nobleman Florian Griespek of Griespach had the chateau built in the
style of an Italian Renaissance fortress. In 1623, Polyxena of Lobkowicz bought it and the
chateau remained in the possession of Lobkowicz family of Roudnice till 1949, when it was
nationalized.Toward the end of 1992, the chateau was returned to the Roudnice side of
Lobkowicz family in the restitution proceedings. The exhibition of the ancient European art is
installed in the chateau. The Chateau of Nelahozeves is situated approximately
30 km north of Prague.

The predecessor of the present chateau was original Mělník Romanesque castle. From the
Gothic appearance of the castle, relatively few remains were preserved. In the late 15th
century, it was enlarged, thoroughly reconstructed to the Renaissance chateau in the middle
of the 16th century and in 1685 – 1686 altered in the Baroque style. In 1734, it got its present
appearance. Mělník is situated ca 35 km from Prague.
Terezín

A former military village, originally founded by Emperor Josef II as a part of a complex of
military fortifications for the defence of the Kingdom at the late 18th century. During the
World War II, the Nazis transformed it into a Jewish ghetto and a concentration camp.
Terezín is situated about 60 km from Prague.

A medieval town in the midst of the beautiful South Bohemian countryside, called Pearl of

has two national cultural dominant features – the Chateau and the Gothic Church of St Vitus.
In the Renaissance chateau – former seat of powerful Houses of Rožmberk and
Schwarzenberg and after the Prague Castle the second largest one in Bohemia, there are
rich collections of antique furniture, Flemish tapestries and historical weapons. Český
Krumlov is situated 170 km from Prague.

The city of Prague is Czech Republic´s cultural centre and is also one of the liveliest
European cities bursting with culture in terms of arts, music, festivals, museums and much
more. In fact, the cultural season in Prague never ends as after the „stone theatres“ close
their doors for summer holidays, festivals and performances in the open air take place in
many areas of Prague. Prague also hosts world famous exhibitions, star concerts and

There is a wide choice of accommodation in Prague, from hotels of all categories including
all world major chains in modern buildings, as well as in ancient palaces strictly protected as
historical monuments, to boarding houses, hostels, private apartments and camping sites.
There are 45 five-star, 230 four-star and approx. 260 three-star hotels. The total capacity of

8. GASTRONOMY
As in any other European capital in Prague there is a wide choice of restaurants, cafés, bars,
taverns and pubs with international cuisine, with different kinds of national cuisine, as well as
restaurants specialized in fish, venison, vegetarian, kosher dishes, etc. Czech cuisine offers
classical dishes, such as pork with cabbage and dumplings, sirloin of beef, tomato, dill,
mushroom and other sauces with dumplings and beef, or schnitzel with a special potato
salad, or perhaps fruit dumplings strewn with cottage cheese and sugar. It is also possible to
choose from many regional specialities, various potato and mushroom dishes as well as
desserts, such as famous Bohemian and Moravian cakes. A good dinner must be
accompanied by the Czech national drink – beer, first and foremost worldwide known Pilsner
beer, brewed in Plzeň, the city in Western Bohemia. Many other excellent light and dark
beers are also on offer – Budvar, Radegast, Gambrinus, Staropramen, Kozel, Bernard,
Krušovice and tens of other brands. Some beerhouses brew their own beer and offer
excursions to their brewery. Selection of delicious Czech and particularly Moravian wines is
abundant as well.

There is a great choice of shops, shopping malls and exclusive boutiques of luxury brands in
Prague. On weekdays, shops are usually open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., groceries open earlier.
Most department stores and shopping malls are open daily including weekends from 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m. Shops in the historical city centre offering most famous and traditional Czech goods
- glass, porcelain, ceramics, garnets of Bohemia, wooden toys, marionettes and handicraft
products are open until late. Most shops are closed on 1st January, 25th and 26th
December. Generally, major credit cards are accepted.
