Ochranná přikrývka greenu 14

Koncem minulé sezony bylo rozhodnuto vyzkoušet jednu ochrannou přikrývku na green.
Princip greenové přikrývky je jednoduchý. Přikrývka s ventilací umožňuje zabránit sněhu a
ledu přijít do styku s travním kořenovým systémem, přitom ale umožňuje pumpovat čerstvý
vzduch pod přikrývku v době mrazu a později v době tání.
Instalace přikrývky.
Cílem aplikace přikrývky je udržet trávu zdravou v dlouhých obdobích ležícího sněhu. Pokud
sníh přichází do kontaktu s travním podložím může tráva omrznout a tím může dojít jak k
jejímu poškození tak ke zhoršení její odolnosti proti nemocem.

V minulosti green 14 velmi trpěl onemocněním a poškozením mrazem v zimních obdobích,
proto bylo rozhodnuto vyzkoušet přikrývku právě na tomto greenu. V dobách mírnějších
zimních podmínek zejména v prosinci docházeli členové našeho týmu ke greenu s
přenosným fukarem a pravidelně pumpovali vzduch pod přikrývku pomocí ventilačních hadic.
V tomto jsme pokračovali do doby než teploty konzistentně zůstaly pod bodem mrazu a růst
trávy se tím kompletně zastavil.
Jakmile mrazy polevily začátkem dubna, odstranili jsme zbylý sníh a přikrývku.
Výsledek.
V době odstraňování přikrývky bylo ještě na greenu nejméně 30cm sněhu a ledu. Měli jsme v
úmyslu odstranit sníh a poté odebírat přikrývku přes den, kdy teploty byly nad bodem mrazu, a
vracet přikrývku na noc. Mým cílem bylo dopřát greenu denní světlo a vzduch po předchozích
5 měsících sněhového pokryvu.

Když jsme přikrývku definitivně odstranili, viděli jsme že na greenu byl zachován 100% travní
porost, kompletně bez onemocnění.

Jak vidíte z předchozí fotografie green byl ve výborném stavu po odstranění zimní přikrývky.
Celkově všechny greeny vyšly z této zimy v lepším stavu než v minulých letech. To je
především díky dobře provedené aerifikaci provedené na všech greenech ke konci minulého
roku (drill&fill a děrování hroty). Ačkoliv zavzdušňovací program zlepšil zdraví a sílu greenů,
pociťuji že některým greenům by ke zlepšení kondice přispěla tato dodatečná zimní ochrana.
Obzvláště green 8 byl bezprostředně po odtání sněhu letošní zimou viditelně postižen, green
2 také trpěl. Obecně dobrý stav greenů na hřišti je ale příslibem zlepšení která ještě přijdou.
Mám dobré důvody se domnívat že v budoucnosti se zdraví greenů zlepší natolik, že přikrývek
nebude potřeba. Proto nepovažuji za nutné pořizovat přikrývky pro všechny greeny; prozatím
bych ale ještě doporučoval pořídit přikrývky i pro green 8 a 2, možná i 11.

At the end of last season the decision was made to test the use of a greens cover. The
thinking behind a greens cover is simple. A cover with ventilation allows us to stop snow and
ice coming in contact with the crown of the grass plant whilst allowing us to pump fresh air
under the cover during periods of freezing and thawing weather conditions.

The idea is that by keeping ice and snow away from the grass plant you can maintain a
healthy grass sward throughout long periods of laying snow. When ice comes in contact with
the crown of the plant it can cause frost damage and stress making the plant less resistant to
disease attack.

In the past green 14 has suffered a great deal with disease and frost damage during the
winter season so it was decided that this would be an ideal test area.
During periods of milder weather in December (freeze and thaw) a member of staff would
use a back pack blower to pump air under the cover using the ventilation pipes installed. We
continued to do this until temperatures were constantly below freezing at which stage all
growth stops and a period of dormancy begins.
Once the freezing conditions stopped in early April we removed the remaining snow and
removed the cover.
The result.
There was at least 30cm of snow and ice still on the cover when we started to remove it. The
plan was to remove all snow and then remove the cover during the day time when
temperatures were above freezing and replace it at night. I wanted to get some good light and
air to the green which had been snow covered for around 5 months.

When the cover was finally removed we were able to see that the green had maintained its
100% grass cover and was completely disease free.

As you can see from the photo above the 14th green was in excellent condition after the
removal of the winter cover.
In general all greens did come out of the winter period in better condition than in previous
years. This was mainly due to the good aeration work carried out on all greens at the end of
last year (drill and fill and hollow coring). Although the aeration program has improved the
health and strength of the greens i still feel that some greens would benefit from installation of
winter covers. 8th green in particular was in poor health when snow finally cleared this year
and the 2nd was also suffering after a long winter. The general condition of the greens after
winter is an indicator of good things to come. I would hope that in the future the health of the
greens will be such that covers are not required at all, therefore i would suggest the purchase
of another cover for green 8 and green 2 or 11. It is not necessary to buy covers for all 18
greens.
