How far back in time
our Memory of Nations
reaches
How much do you remember? Can you tell your story?
Which, say, tales from your life would you relate if a Memory of Nations editor approached you?
When we approach witnesses to tell their stories to
Memory of Nations, they never ask: “So what would you like
to hear?” They know exactly what we are after. A former secret police officer will tell how things were with the secret
police, a war veteran will relate how he made it to the army
and what he experienced, and dissidents will describe what
happened to and around them when they stood up against
a totalitarian regime.
We, the post bellum people who build up Memory of
Nations, keep asking ourselves a principal question all the
time: Who should we record? What stories should we capture? Who is (and who is not) part of Memory of Nations?
How far does Memory of Nations reach?
Historical knowledge can be applied not only to human deeds. But what are those big deeds? Let me give you
an example, which a friend gave me… The day in March
1939 when Nazi soldiers occupied Prague, rolling through
the city’s centre, Czechs looked on with their faces expressing desperation, as period photographs clearly show to
5
this day. The same day and hour, my friend’s grandmother
overheard this conversation between two ladies on a tram:
“Do you know what’s going on at Wenceslas Square?” The
other lady replied: “Oh, there’s some Germans there or
what.” What an example of witnesses to historical events.
I thought, wow, what a way to miss history! When history is
happening, you can either miss it, or you can hide from it in
your little private den and wait to see if it comes to get you.
In this respect, my question is: Where does history start?
History starts the moment you step out of that hideaway where you shut yourself in, where unpleasant things
that can come are kept at bay. Sometimes you step out of
your own will and sometimes others may help you. Then,
and only then, something worth telling a story about can
happen.
The pages you are about to read avoid regurgitating
thoughts that have been covered already. Instead, they are
trying to offer you a closer look at post bellum in facts,
figures, statements and analysis, illustrating – in a way that
may, admittedly, seem almost pedantic at times – the work
that many people did in 2014. Even though it might appear
that post bellum has got stuck in statistics, losing sight
of its goals, ideals and values, please be assured that the
opposite is true. post bellum has grown in the last three
years. The pace of most projects has multiplied, the awareness of Memory of Nations and post bellum among our
nation has become part of the general cultural knowledge
(and not just in the Czech Republic), and our budget has
increased by one third. Every Czech crown donated, every
bit of help offered and every little service provided for free
let us grow a little bit bigger. The stories we collect and the
projects we pursue become part of our lives, and we are responsible for them. We tell “history stories” and seek ways
to attract others. We record, write, photograph, broadcast,
publish, teach our craft to students, lecture, discuss, and
work with institutions at home and abroad. We organize
feasts, exhibitions, trips, a documentary competition, and
we have been developing a smart phone application… Of
course, a big part of our time is spent raising funds. By far
the largest portion of the funds we use comes from private,
foundation and corporate donations and contributions
from our friends at Memory of Nations Club and Memory
of Nations Collegium. National and European grants and
subsidies represent a smaller portion. Thanks to the donations, we are independent of state subsidies and thus
also of the ambitions of various political representatives.
And I would like to extend my sincerest thanks for that to
all of you.
If you are reading this Annual Report because you are
considering a donation to post bellum, please be confident that, fifteen years into its existence, this non-profit
organization has not only ideas, a goal, and a huge amount
of work (both done and to be done) but also an excellent
office background. It keeps its accounts in a careful and
transparent manner and uses the donated funds economically and reasonably. Even if your donation may seem so
low as to be merely symbolical, it shows that you share our
values, care about our work, that you are not indifferent to
the future of our society and that you want to participate in
something that makes sense and will last. Without a doubt,
our children will appreciate this one day.
Thank you.

The mission of Post
Bellum, or what is
Memory of Nations
The post bellum non-profit public benefit organization
records the recollections of witnesses to major historical
events as part of the documentary and competition project, Stories of the 20th Century (formerly known as Voices of Heroes), and the educational project, Stories of Our
Neighbors (formerly We Did Not Give Up). We store all of
the collected stories (audio and video recordings, photographs, archives and texts) in a digital online archive, Memory of Nations, which we have founded and managed, at
www.pametnaroda.cz and www.memoryofnation.eu.
The memorandum of association of 31 July 2008 has
entrusted the care for Memory of Nations, which is an umbrella concept for the collection of testimonies, to three
institutions: post bellum, The Institute for the Study of
Totalitarian Regimes, and Czech Radio, with post bellum
coordinating and leading the joint web team. The web team
has three members who are the representatives of the
aforementioned organizations. Under the memorandum,
7
Czech Radio provides the technological background for
the project’s operation (servers, backup, user access, user
certificates etc.). The Institute provides the scientific background, processes and stores the recordings, provides its
own archive documents, and trains editors (its representative on the team is the Editor in Chief of Memory of Nation).
post bellum as the project founder and manager provides
the content – recording interviews, setting the schedules,
organizing and leading teams of project coordinators who
work with Memory of Nations (the Memory of Nations Sites
smart phone application, the Memory of Nations Awards,
Stories of Our Neighbors, exhibits, conferences), and managing the project paperwork.
post bellum is not merely an “editorial” or archivist
organization. Its mission is to change and encourage the
society towards responsibility and respect for democracy
and freedom, for which thousands of the members of earlier generations risked their lives, and instill respect for the
elderly in young people. PB presents the stories that it collects in many forms with a view to addressing all strata of
the society. This is why it has been developing Memory of
Nations Sites, a smart phone application; participating in
the Stories of the 20th Century, a Czech Radio documentary
series; running the Stories of our Neighbors competition
for elementary schools; issuing the We’re Still At War comic book; producing exhibits; bestowing Memory of Nations
Awards as part of live broadcasts on Czech TV and other
European TV channels; gathering people in the Memory of
Nations Club of Friends and Collegium; and doing much
more. PB feels social responsibility for making sure that we
do not forget that freedom and democracy are not to be
taken for granted. Through stories, we learn understanding
the past and the present while preparing for the future. The
stories lead us to be responsible citizens.

International
Cooperation
We have been working with international partners since
2008. The projects we focus on most closely are the Memory of Nations – providing the depository for documented
stories from our partners’ countries – and organizing the
official prize giving ceremony of the Memory of Nations
Awards including the search for the laureates.
•• We completed the Iron Curtain Stories international
project, which involved the filming and processing of
120 interviews with witnesses. We focused on stories
closely associated with the existence of the iron curtain
– the stories of agents-walkers, émigrés, border guard
officers etc. We closely cooperated on the project with
our partners in Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Germany,
Croatia and Romania. The Europe for Citizens program,
the International Visegrad Fund and the Czech-German
Future Fond provided support for the project. The main
output of the project was the international version
of the Memory of Nations Sites mobile application.
We presented the project in the media in the Czech
Republic and abroad (including conferences in Germany
and Croatia, in addition to media coverage).
•• In April 2014 we presented Memory of Nations and
the work of Post Bellum at the European Network
Remembrance and Solidarity/Europe for Citizens
Programme, one of the most prestigious international
conferences.
•• More documentation projects joined Memory of
Nations: “Stories of Czech Countrymen in North
Caucasus and West Siberia”; “Testimonies of the
Members and Descendents of the Czech Minority in
Russia” (managed by Sergey Skorvid, a Russian scholar
and professor of the Russian State University for
Humanities); and “Destinies of the Members of the
Seliger Gemeinde, Sudeten German Social Democrats”
(managed by our German partner, Arbeit und Leben
Bayern).
•• Post Bellum provided lectures for the representatives
of Ukrainian academic, documentary and educational
institutions organized by the Association for
International Affairs in Prague in November 2014 and
at the Taras Shevchenko National University in Kiev on
December 19, 2014.
•• Start of collaboration with Lucie Řehoříková, the Head
of Czech Centre in Kiev: We are preparing the details
and technical parameters for a long-term project with
a view to establishing a Post Bellum office in Ukraine.
•• In 2014 we translated our We’re Still at War comic book
into Romanian, French, German and English thanks in
part to the financial support provided by the Ministry of
Culture of the Czech Republic.

Eye Direct
Recording
Video recording using the EyeDirect
technology in 2014
ED studio in 2014:
181 witnesses’ testimonies
We film witnesses using two HD cameras in a soundproof
mobile recording studio (using suspended screens, acoustic panels, sound and light systems). The technology was
developed in the USA and first used and patented by the
documentary author Errol Morris. It uses a special device
on one camera. The device employs a system of semi-permeable mirrors resulting in video recordings where the witness is looking directly into the camera lens instead of at
the interviewer. The mirror device shows the interviewer’s
face to the witness. In effect, the witnesses can relate their
stories to the interviewers for hours, in reality talking to
the camera lens. This approach requires only a minimalist studio crew for filming: two camera men and an editor.
Project human resources in addition to the crew include
just a producer and an administrator/project manager. Due
to financial constraints, only approximately one half of the
capacity of the EyeDirect studio is utilized.
We used the video recordings made using the EyeDirect
technology for the preparation of documentaries that we
showed on plasma screens as part of the exhibitions titled
“Ready to Work and Defend the Homeland!!” (Prague Old
Town Hall, April-May, 2014) and “In the Sign of Three Declarations” (New Town Hall, October 2014). For more details
see the Exhibits chapter below. In cooperation with Czech
TV, we started the preparations for the pilot episode of the
Stories of the 20th Century documentary series focusing on
the officers of the State Security secret police at the end
of 2014.
For 2015, we do not just focus on witnesses in big cities – we also want to map stories on the outskirts of the
country. As in 2014, we will try to co-finance the filming together with our partner organizations, in effect increasing
the number of witnesses filmed.

Memory of Nations
Awards
Held on November 17, 2014 at the National Theatre in Prague
As part of the fifth edition of the Memory of Nations
Awards, which coincided with the twenty-fifth anniversary
of the demise of the communist totalitarianism in Europe,
we honored five brave resistance members and opponents
of totalitarianism: Dana Vargová (Czech Republic), János
Kenedi (Hungary), Manfred Matthies (Germany), Kornel
Morawiecki (Poland) and Anton Srholec (Slovakia).
The laureates received their prizes for 2014 in the form
of glass blocks with embedded memory media containing
the sound recordings of their testimonies (designed by the
award-winning visual artists Kryštof Kintera and Richard
Wiesner) from respected Europeans including the Hungarian writer György Konrád, the former Slovak Prime Minister
Iveta Radičová, the Templeton Prize laureate and philosopher Tomáš Halík and others. The performances by the legendary Welsh musician John Cale (ex Velvet Underground),
the famous Hungarian composer and musician Gábor
Presser, Berlin’s cult band Pankow, and Jana Kirschner and
David Koller provided the live soundtrack to the ceremony.
The event was aired live on Czech TV’s second channel along with four other European broadcasters – Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), Rozhlas a televízia Slovenska
(RTVS), Telewizja Polska (TVP) and Magyar ATV. According to
the resources available, more than 200,000 viewers saw the
action live on screen (based on a sober estimate, as the
Hungarian, Polish and German broadcasters have not pro-
vided us with their figures). Thousands of others watched
the show via the broadcasters’ online channels.
A jury of experts including international scholars, documenters, directors of history institutions and foundations,
researchers, diplomats and journalists chose the five Memory of Nations Awards winners for 2014. The evening was
also backed by 22 international partners from among respected institutions focusing on modern history.
The international nature of this year’s Memory of Nations Awards was reflected by the interest on the part of
the media and the general public. A total of 305 media articles were published, including 35 in premier Polish, Slovak,
Hungarian and German media, 100 in Czech national media and 170 in regional media. Commentators appreciated
the Awards’ uniqueness, international reach and current
context. The same can be said about the spontaneous response that this year’s Awards met with in social media. An
average of 10,000 visitors saw each of the related Facebook
posts and 886 voiced their recognition for the laureates in
their posts at www.memoryofnationsawards.eu.
Helmut Frauendorfer, a German journalist and a member of the jury of experts, wrote: “I am just astonished by
the interest of the general public and the media as well as
the spontaneous atmosphere of the Memory of Nations
Awards. We can only dream about something like this in
Germany. You have something to be proud of!”

Stories of Our
Neighbors
Educational documentary project for elementary schools
Over the course of six months, teams of student documenters accompanied by their teachers and Post Bellum
members embark on an adventurous quest, looking to find
out about the lives of the witnesses to World War II and
the communist totalitarian regime. During the project, they
participate in media workshops and visit archives (Security Services Archive, National Archive and/or regional archives) as well as other institutions and sites associated
with the stories. They use the stories they record, archive
sources and information obtained from literature, lectures
and the Internet. They meet the witnesses in person and let
them relate their stories. Students record the testimonies
using radio or TV equipment and take photographs. Then
they process the stories into audio or video shows or in
writing. In the process, they get to see Czech Radio studios
and Post Bellum’s TV studio and work with pro editors to
create their content. Six months later, they present their
work to the general public at an official final presentation.
The goal of the Stories of Our Neighbors is not just
teaching modern history in a way that is “different and
more fun”: It is also about opening up space for civic education, inspiring teachers to use witnesses’ memories for
teaching, giving schools technology know-how, creating
platforms for students to discuss the essence of totalitarian regimes, introducing participants to a broader palette of
resources than just history textbooks, and enabling teen-
agers to meet the oldest citizens who can also suffer from
loneliness and isolation. In our era, such encounters stand
out and enrich both generations.
Eight new municipalities and municipal districts joined
the project in 2014: Prague 5, 6 and 10, Brno Central District,
Semily, Plzeň, Zlín and Mladá Boleslav.
The project was covered in 199 media articles (including 167 in regional and 32 in national media). The project
was given a new visual identity and website, and we introduced the new option of video workshops.
The pilot phase of the project took place in 2012. By
the end of 2014, the project had involved 14 municipalities
and municipal districts, 592 students, 137 teams, 85 schools
and 137 witnesses. We organized 14 final presentations and
6 exhibits and released 3 publications. There are two main
coordinators who manage the project as well as 9 collaborating coordinators who participated on the projects with
Post Bellum in the regions. For 2015, we want to pursue the
project in 12 to 15 regions, depending on interest and the
municipalities’ financial contribution. We would like to enter into contracts on the three-year duration of the project
with certain municipal districts and municipalities in 2015.

Memory of Nations
Sites
A mobile app for iOS and Android phones
Post Bellum developed the Memory of Nations Sites application, a map guide to places associated with the events
and stories of the 20th century, at the end of 2012. This is
a unique software application in the Czech Republic that
installs on mobile handsets, most often via Google Play
or App Store. Our editors place “pointers” in the electronic map, on which you click or hover the cursor to display
a photograph and a description of the place along with
the witness’ story. The application offers extensive user-friendly multimedia content – texts, short audio clips,
photographs and links. We set the brief and to-the-point
stories contained in the Memory of Nation database in the
areas where they happened. We connect the dots and stories, creating hiking paths to follow. The application offers
a Czech and an English version. The mobile app sets the
language up automatically depending on the settings of
the handset to which it is downloaded.

Memory of Nations
on the Road
Three days in the central squares of all regional cities
May–June, 2014
For more than a year, Memory of Nations and Post Bellum
members had been discussing the questions of “What other
ways can we discover interesting witnesses?” and “How can
we improve the society’s awareness of Post Bellum, Memory of Nations and Memory of Nations Club of Friends?” The
result was organizing a contact campaign in the streets of
all regional cities of the Czech Republic. We built a collapsible wooden mobile radio studio (with recording equipment
kindly loaned by our partner, Czech Radio) and addressed
the general public with suggestions to discuss the recent
history and the importance of not forgetting about it.

th
A public competition
The second edition of the Stories of the 20th Century competition was held from April 8 to October 20, 2014 with the
involvement of pant, a Czech non-profit organization, as the
case had been one year earlier. The competition is open to
everyone (except for contractual coworkers of PB and Pant
and their family members) who records the recollections
of a witness to the 20th century and submits the recording along with a text version of the story and photographic
evidence to pribehy20stoleti.cz under their competition
account. Most contestants sought witnesses among their
relatives, friends and neighbors and in archives too. As in
2013, the competition was structured into three age categories.
Contest submissions were rated by two juries: experts
(historians and history teachers) who chose 5 finalists in
each category, and the media (journalists and the documenters Adam Drda, Ondřej Tolar, Jan Gazdík, Jan Kubica
and Jiří Kubík) who determined the final order of the finalists proposed by the jury of experts.
The winners were officially unveiled at the National
Memorial on the Vítkov hill in Prague on December 11, 2014
and they received both financial and material prizes. The
winner of the adult category received CZK 50,000 of prize
money. Post Bellum entered into professional editorial
licensing agreements with all award winners in the adult
category.

Exhibits
We prepared five exhibits as part of the Stories of Our
Neighbors educational project in 2014. School students,
a professional photographer and a graphic designer, and
Post Bellum producers and coordinators participated in
the exhibits.
The exhibit based on the We’re Still at War comic book
from 2012 remains popular; it was made into a road show
and featured in five regions of the Czech Republic in 2014.
We prepared two new exhibits: Rudé právo vs. Memory
of Nations on the premises of the daily’s former print shop
in Prague and I Will Not Forget, the works of Jana Dubová, a
former Auschwitz prisoner.
Together with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian
Regimes, we prepared an exhibit titled In the Sign of Three

Memory of Nations
Club of Friends
A community of regular contributors
There is something more than just an interest in history,
stories and Memory of Nations that brings together the
community of people in the Memory of Nations Club of
Friends – it is the confidence in Post Bellum. The Club has
been under construction since 2011. Those who want to
become members have to complete an online application
form at www.postbellum.cz and agree to make voluntary
monthly contributions. Once the application is confirmed,
they are e-mailed a certificate and a numerical code to be
used in a standing payment order for their bank accounts.
Club members usually support Post Bellum with amounts
ranging from CZK 100 to CZK 1,000 (USD 4 to USD 40) per
month. We use their contributions primarily for financing
the recording of witnesses’ stories.
Club members receive information about projects,
events and the stories broadcast in a weekly newsletter.
We prepared several guided tours, exhibits, visits to Memory of Nations Sites and informal meetings as well as two
weekend trips with witnesses for Club members.

Memory of Nations
Collegium
A community of Post Bellum donors
The Collegium underwent both personnel and concept
changes in 2014. Chairman Daniel Kroupa resigned due to
his candidateship in the European Parliament election. With
Jan Dobrovský as the new Chairman, the Collegium changed
from a closed donors’ club into a think-tank that brings together people with the ambition to take a stand and comment on current topics in discussions, lectures and workshops. The Collegium places emphasis on human rights
topics with historical aspects and actively approaches the
media.
Panel discussion topics in 2014
“Does Recalling Totalitarianism Make Any Sense?”
– Prague, April 17, 2014
The panel discussion brought together the politician Daniel Kroupa, publicist Roman Joch, and political scientists
Ondřej Slačálek and Pavel Barša, with Robert Břešťan, the
head commentator of the Ekonom weekly, as the moderator.
“Russian Foreign Policy”
– Prague, October 21, 2014
“Why should Post Bellum, or Memory of Nations, for that
matter, organize discussions on Russia? Topics such as these
provoke us to take a stand, to not be indifferent to the violations of human rights and international treaties anywhere
in the world”, Mikuláš Kroupa, Director of Post Bellum said
in conclusion of the discussion. Participants included Luboš
Dobrovský, former ambassador to Russia; Alexey Kelin, the
representative of the Russian minority in the Government
Council; Hospodářské noviny reporter Ondřej Soukup; and
Hynek Kmoníček, the Head of the International Department
of the Presidential Office. Robert Břešťan moderated the
discussion.
“Collegium meeting on the occasion of the 25th
anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain”
– Prague, National Theatre, November 17
The event featured keynote addresses delivered by Petr
Pithart, the former Prime Minister, and Professor Tomáš
Halík on the topic of “Social Relativization of Former Generations’ Experience in the Czech Republic and in Russia”. All
Memory of Nations Awards 2014 nominees received a deed
of appreciation.
sand people saw the webcast from the latest debate on
the situation in the Czech media and the topic resonated
strongly in the media and on Facebook. (We estimate the
number of readers and viewers to have exceeded 10,000.)
The number of the Collegium members increased by
10 % to 140 in 2014. The Collegium includes both “regular” members who support Post Bellum outputs with their
member contributions and private donations, and “honorary” members who back up Memory of Nations on the
democratic and ideological plane and need not contribute.
Some of the members of the Memory of Nations Collegium
Dominik Duka, Archbishop of Prague and the Primate of Bohemia; Matěj
Forman, film director; Jan Gebhart, Professor of History; Tomáš Halík,
priest and Templeton Prize laureate; Ivan Havel, scholar; Roman Joch,
political scientist and journalist; Jiří Kocian, Deputy Director of the Institute
for Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences; Václav
Marhoul, film director; Martin C. Putna, Professor and literature historian;
The number of attendees to every Collegium meeting has
grown significantly to an average of one hundred visitors.
The frequency of the meetings has also increased. Formerly
there used to be one meeting per year on average; three
meetings took place in 2014, and the plan for 2015 and onwards is to hold meetings on a quarterly basis.
The new concept has also increased the social impact
of the Collegium meetings: For instance, almost five thou-
Daniel Raus, Editor in Chief of the Czech Radio Plus channel; Robert
Čásenský, Editor in Chief of Reportér; Zuzana Roithová, politician; Karel
Schwarzenberg, politician; Jáchym Topol, writer; Paul Wilson, translator;
František Zahrádka, 2012 Memory of Nations Award laureate, and others.

Communication with
the general public
Post Bellum members actively approach the general public
with topics related to Memory of Nations and the stories
that we have recorded. We consider it of key importance
to not just create a researcher archive and a collection of
life stories: Through real people’s stories, we want to open
a debate on society-wide topics, such as: “Should secret
police archives be accessible to the public?”, “How do we
preserve our ancestors’ photographs and diaries?”, “Help
us record your parents’ and grandparents’ stories!”, and
“Through stories, students understand history better than
through figures.”
25
The total media presence of Memory of Nations has grown
by 70 % in year-on-year terms.
Total media outputs:
1,732
(year-on-year increase: 718) Of that, publicity in national media increased by 30 %
(from 274 to 362 articles) and publicity in TV news grew by
108 % (from 12 to 25).
When it comes to Memory of Nations publicity, we focused
on communicating our project activities (Stories of Our
Neighbors, Memory of Nations Awards, Memory of Nations
Sites) and we were also much more successful in placing
the witnesses’ stories in our collection directly in the media
(this accounts to approximately 50% of all media outputs).
Facebook
We only started systematic social media communication in
the last quarter of 2014, and within three months we succeeded in increasing the average reach of our FB posts (the
number of people who see them) by 35 % (from 1,043 in
2013 to 1,410 in 2014).
The total number of our FB page fans increased by 48 % in
2014 (from 4,478 to 6,648).
Our systematic Facebook approach only brought its full results within the first five months of 2015 when we increased
our average Facebook reach by 148%. As a result, each of
our posts on Facebook is displayed to an average of 3,502
people.
