Worldview Comenius lived in a world torn apart by religious wars, power politics and injustice. But also during a time of discoveries and increasing knowledge and information. Ignorance is for him the core of the problems in the world. The youth should be prepared for wisdom, eloquence and tasks in life. Therefore it is necessary that they first learn how the world works. In this world, people live with each other and, in our eyes, close to nature. Birth, life and death are in the eye of Comenius a process of which we do not know the end. Comenius is convinced of a life after death and firmly believes that people should prepare for it. Comenius efforts to prepare for life on earth and the afterlife led him to write the Sensualium Orbis pictus, the phenomenal world, which appeared in 1658. With 150 images and information in this book we see his view on the world. Twenty-six professional artists have been asked to take note of this world and be inspired by this. In the world a man does not exist by himself. He learns from others what is wisdom, what is necessary to understand everything well and do the good thing. And therefore he must learn in the first place to communicate. And that can be done with the alphabet. If man is guided through all things, and knows everyting by name, he can think about it. A toho lze dostáhnout prostřednictvím abecedy. The images are familiar to the students. Sounds too. By connecting sounds and letters, Comenius provides the key to learning to read. With the display of words in different languages, he makes it possible to learn different languages. Obrazy jsou studentům známy, zvuky též. Spojením zvuků a písmen získává Komenský klíč k naučení čtení. Zobrazením slov v různých jazycích umožňuje výuku cizích jazyků. 6 2 Begin en einde 2 Beginning and End 2 Začátek a konec God is God. Alles in allen overal. God is God. All in all around. The creator, gouvernor and protector of the world. Someday man will be held accountable for everything he has done. Because the world is not the ultimate destiny of man. The first item in the Orbis pictus Sensualium is God, the last subject is the Last Judgement. Comenius puts the lives of the people in an educational perspective: man must learn to make the right choices. První položkou v Orbis pictus Sensualium je Bůh, poslední téma je Poslední soud. Komenský staví životy lidí na výchovné perspektivě: člověk se musí naučit dělat správná rozhodnutí. 7 3 Hemel en aarde 3 Heaven and earth 3 Země a nebe In de wereld heeft alles zijn plaats. In the world everything is in place. The four elements of fire, air, water and earth provide structure and coherence. The sun in the sky, the birds in the air, the fish in the water and mountains, forests, fields, animals and humans on the earth. The earth is fixed for the sky revolves around the earth. The sun is always shining even though sometimes there hangs a cloud. Even the night is never completely dark due to the moon and the stars. Ve světě má vše své místo. Čtyři elementy: oheň, vzduch, voda a země zajišťují stavbu a soudržnost. During his study Comenius bought a first edition of Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium in which Copernicus described his theory of celestial bodies. Comenius held the view that the earth is the center around which everything revolves. The Copernican theory that the earth revolves around the sun, was not generally accepted untill the the eighteenth century. Adam was the first man created by God in his own image on the sixth day of creation. Eve, the first woman was created from the man’s rib. The devil, disguised as a serpent, tempted them to eat the fruit of the forbidden tree. They and their descendants were condemned to misery and death and expelled from paradise. The soul is the life of the body. It is the vigor of the plants, the mobility of the animals and the understanding of the people. The mind consists of three parts: the intellect that distinguishes between good and evil, true and false ; the will by which he prefers the act required or to be, rejected; conscience by which he pursues the chosen good and renounces the bad. The true knowledge of anything is science. Since Adam and Eve were tempted in paradise the world is no longer as God intended. But because man is created is in the image of God including anfree will, he can choose to do good. And that’s something he needs to learn. The first human food were the fruits reaped by Adam in paradise. Horticulture is also the oldest from of agriculture. The farmer sows and harvests the grain. Crops and livestock were in the old times the work of kings and heroes. Now the work is done by people from the bottom layer of society. Prvním lidským jídlem bylo ovoce sklizené Adamem v ráji. Zahradní kultura je starší než polní kultura. Sedlák seje a sklízí zrno. People are living in a direct relationship with the nature around them. Food is produced in the immediate vicinity of the human being. But gradually a division of labor arises by which no longer everyone is equal in society Lidé žijí v přímém vztahu s přírodou kolem nich. In the beginning people lived in caves, later in straw huts and tents, and eventually in houses. The lumberjack edited trees and saws the lumber. He measures with the guidance and put the timber with solid rivets. The house is divided into several rooms. In the court are the well, the house and the bathhouse. The rooms are lit by windows and heated by the stove. In the bedroom under the bed is the chamber pot to empty the bladder. Dřevorubec kácí stromy a řeže stavební dříví. Měří s pravítkem a řezivo spojuje pevnými čepy. Dům je rozdělen do několika pokojů. In his book Comenius shows all kinds of ingenious machines that man has learned to subjugate the forces of nature such as wind and water mills, cranes and pile drivers. Thanks to such inventions man is no longer solely to rely on his own strength. 7Crafts 7Řemesla The miner gets the ore baskets up and then the metal is melted out. The blacksmith heats the iron and edit it with a hammer on his anvil. So he makes nails, chains and locks. The barber cuts and shaves the hair but also does bloodletting. The doctor takes care of the wounds. The carpenter workes the wood and potter makes the platters and jugs on his turntable. In the oven he also bakes the enamelled tiles for the stove . The groom takes care of the horses. The tailor cuts the cloth and sews the pieces together into jackets with collars, doublets, pants and socks. The shoemaker makes of leather on his shape slippers, shoes and boots. Krejčí stříhá látku a sešívá části k sobě do podoby kabátů s límci, krátkých kabátců, kalhot a ponožek. Švec vyrábí z kůže na svém kopytě střevíce, boty a holínky. The clock counts the hours. The sundial indicates the time with the shadow, the hourglass with the sand and the clock with the stroke of the clock. Nature provides the raw materials processed into products by the artisans. In the Orbis sensualium pictus Comenius cites dozens of trades and professions where students construct their own image. Until the industrial revolution in the nineteenth century this way of producing continued to be dominant. 8Travel 8 Cestování The traveler carries his luggage on his back. With his stick he travels along the country roads and ask his fellow travellers the right way. He should beware of muggers, even at the inn. The rider saddles the horse and takes off. In the saddlebag is a gun. Similarly travels the postman. Jezdec sedlá koně a odjíždí. The boatmen operate the sails so they can travel over the sea. When a storm picks up the sails they are lowered so as not to smash on the rocks. In case of e shipwreck people and cargo are lost. The cargo and the bodies wash up on the beach. In Comenius time the world is an unsafe place. Travelling is dangerous but that did not stop Comenius from travelling himself over great distances in Europe. During one of these trips he himself was almost shipwrecked. In the school the young minds are formed to virtue. The classroom is the master on his chair and the students at the banks. Some write on the board, others at the table. Still others are overheard and some chat. They are chastened by the slice and the roe. Knowledge is important for Comenius, but only knowledge that is useful for life. Schools should not be torture chambers of the mind while memorising useless facts. Schools should be workshops for humanity. Man must learn to be human. In the muse chamber (museum) books are read and what is important is written in a handbook. Who wants to study at night puts on the candle for some light. Wij wonen in Europa. The physicist investigates all creatures of God in the world. The metaphysician investigates the causes and effects of things. The earth is round and is divided into 360 degrees of longitude and latitude. The earth covers the ocean and is intersected by seas. It is divided into two cold regions where no one lives. Both temperate and hot zones are well occupied. The earth is divided into three continents: Europe along with Asia, Africa and America. We live in Europe. According to Comenius people were given three books by God: nature (God’s creation), man (God’s image) and the Bible (God’s word). This is all man needs. With the senses man learns from nature. With his intellect he examines the effect of everything. By revelations he gets aquainted with the will of God. 10 Moudrost Fyzik zkoumá všechna Boží stvoření na zemi. Metafyzik zkoumá příčiny a důsledky věcí. Země je kulatá a je rozdělena do 360 stupňů délky a šířky. Nahlíží do minulosti i budoucnosti. This life is a road with a fork. Do not go for the easy way because you can deceive. Resist your tendencies and follow the right path and be guided by the virtue for it knows no detours. The prudence (prudentia) takes everything into account. She looks at the past and into the future. Her goals are honorable and useful, and it fit the means and the method thereon. Activity (sedulitas) is like the ant who works and hates laziness. What she starts, she finishes. A diligent student is like a bee collecting honey from many flowers. Bij wilde feesten ontstaat geilheid en Temperance (temperantia) tempers the urge to eat and drink and keeps the appetite in check. Wild parties lead to an immoral life of whoring and layabout. Divoké večírky vedou k nemravnému životu, chlípnosti a neřesti. The boldness (fortitude) is steadfast and wards setback with the shield of tolerance and with the sword of valor she fights the cravings. The patience (patientia) tolerates disasters and injustice as a fatherly admonition of God. The impatient touches despair by his anger over injustice and commits suicide. The humanity (humanitas) ensures courtesy, sincerity, loyalty and love so that people can live together as God intended. Justice (Justitia) judges without respect of persons. One must adhere to agreements. Who steals from another or injures someone shall be punished by the gallows. Štědrost (liberalitas) dává potřebnému oděv a potravu. Ale též šetří, takže vždy něco má. Štědrý je pánem svého majetku. Lakomec je otrokem svých věcí. The generosity (liberalitas) gives to who needs clothing and food. But she also saves so she always has something. The generous one is the boss of his property . The miser is the slave of his goods. Comenius mentions the four classic virtues (prudence, justice, temperance and courage) and he adds activity, patience, humanity and generosity. Interestingly, the threeChristian virtues (faith, hope and love) are missing from this list. Maybe they were so obvious to the theologian Comenius that he considered them not worth mentioning . 17 Komenský zmiňuje čtyři klasické ctnosti (moudrost, spravedlivost, statečnost a uměřenost) a přidává aktivitu, trpělivost, lidskost a štědrost. A young man who wants to marry should have money or be able to earn his daily bread in art and science so that he can maintain a household. In seaching a marriageable woman he pays more attention to virtue and honor than beauty and dowry. The suitor asks her hand to her father and mother. Then comes the betrothal and the marriage letter. At the wedding they give each other a ring and they take a meal with the invited witnesses. After that they are husband and wife. The house father has servants and the housewife has girls who do the work. They do so faithfully and in return receive their wages. Previously they were serfs and the lord could decide about their lives. Now it are the poor who earn their wages this way. Nápadník žádá jejího otce a matku o její ruku. Poté následují zásnuby a svatební smlouva. Při svatbě si dají navzájem prsteny a hodují s pozvanými svědky. Potom jsou mužem a ženou. Pán domu má služebníky a paní domu má dívky, které pracují. Pracují věrně a naoplátku dostávají mzdu. Dříve byli otroky a pán mohl rozhodovat o jejich životech. Marriage is subject to conditions and rules. It is not only a union between two people, but also a business arrangement between families that creates the basis for the organization of their own household. And a church ceremony’s is a natural part of it. From several houses grows a village, town or city. In the suburb are the gardens, country houses and the cemetery. In the city are cobbled streets, alleys and markets. Also community centers such as the church, the school, the town hall and the department store. At the wall and towers there are the arsenal, the grain stores, taverns and bars, the theater and the hospital. A little further away are the toilets and the prison. The best law is the agreement between the warring parties themselves or by an arbitrator. If this fails then they come before the judge in the courthouse. The complainant and the accused have their own lawyer and the court imposes a fine or corporal punishment. The criminal is being tortured in prison. Thieves go to the gallows, adulterers be beheaded, murderers and robbers are broken on the wheel or impaled on a pole or burned at the stake. Some are plucked out their tongue or cut off a hand or edited with red-hot pincer before their execution. Those who keep their life are put in the pillory, whipped, branded, demoted, exiled, imprisoned in the galleys or put in prison forever. Enemies of the fatherland are quartered. People live in a community with each other. But where people sit close together, conflicts lie in wait. Rules and punishments should regulate living together. Now what is striking is the violence of the punishment. The intended deterrent effect will have been for Comenius reason to include them in his textbook. Zákony a tresty mají regulovat společný život. 14 Battle 14 Bitva Many cities and towns form a country. The king or prince has his headquarters in the capital. The nobles live on the surrounding castles. The farmers in the villages. If one draws to war, soldiers are recruited. A city under siege is first asked to surrender. When surrender is refused, the storming follows. The city is looted and sometimes razed to the ground. Mnoho měst a městeček utváří krajinu. Král nebo kníže má své ústředí v hlavním městě. Šlechta žije v okolních hradech, sedláci ve vesnicích. Jestliže někdo vytáhne do války, jsou najímáni vojáci. War is in the life of Comenius and his students who use the book part of reality. With topics in the book such as the military, the camp, the battlfield,, the battle at sea and the siege of a city students will become familiar with it. Vaarwel. 15 Divine providence 15 Boží prozřetelnost Piety is the queen of all virtues because it makes use of the knowledge of God in the book of Nature (as the work praises its master) and the Scriptures (the Bible with its Ten Commandments) and reason gives faith and the Bible will help in adversity. The worship takes place in the church. That there is a God is known to all people, but not everyone has really come to know God. Therefore, there exist different religions of which the four main ones are: pagans, Jews, Christians and Muslims. Human happiness is not due to luck, chance or the influence of the stars but on God’s All-Seeing Eye, his alreigning hand, our care, thoughtlessness or sin. God has his servants and angels who accompany people from birth to protect them from evil spirits or the devil. So you’ve seen in a brief overview of all the things you might encounter and thereby learned the most important Latin and German words. Now go ahead and read some good books. Then you will become learned, wise, and pious. Pray to God that he gives you the spirit of wisdom. Goodbye. Nyní pokračuj a čti jiné dobré knihy. The Orbis sensualium pictus is a key pedagogical work of John Amos Comenius, in which he applied his educational views on language teaching. Since he always strove for a uniform and complete education, he conceived his Orbis as an encyclopaedia that was understandable not only through its text but also through the senses. Its direct predecessor was another textbook, the Janua linguarum reserata (1631, Leszno), originally printed only in the Latin. It spread very rapidly in large numbers of copies of different editions. The textbook was quite difficult for beginners, though, and so Comenius compiled a simpler version aptly titled Januae linguarum reseratae vestibulum (1632, Leszno). The core part of both books consisted of simple sentences divided into chapters separated by topics (religion, nature, human body, soul, dwellings, crafts etc.), which also included basic vocabulary and grammar. Jádrem obou spisů byly jednoduché věty sestavené do tematicky ucelených kapitol (náboženství, příroda, lidské tělo, duše, obydlí, řemesla ad.), které obsahovaly základní slovní zásobu i gramatiku. The Orbis sensualium pictus was in fact an abbreviated and simplified version of the Janua and served as propaedeutic to the Vestibulum and Janua. Om het lezen te vergemakkelijken liet 12 13 The Orbis sensualium pictus was first published by the publisher Michael Endter in Nuremberg in 1658 (and was preceded by a test sample print titled the Lucidarium, 1657). Due to the great success of this bilingual Latin-German textbook (it was translated into German by the poet Sigmund von Birken), the Endter publishing house published approximately another ten editions of the Orbis during Comenius’ life, and so did other publishers. It was continuously modified and supplemented. The Latin-German version of the textbook became soon widespread in the cities of central and northern Germany. Since Comenius emphasized a thorough understanding and knowledge of an explored subject, he put emphasis on the sensual aspect of learning, because ‘nothing is into intellect that had not been in the senses’. This approach resulted in a visual connection between the text and images made by numbered cross-references and in a coherent cycle of separate chapters that covered a variety of topics related to the surrounding world and contemporary culture, ethics or morality. If the full potential of the textbook was to be exploited, the textbook had to be translated to the vernacular. The Czech reader definitely appreciated the 1685 four-language edition, which was printed by Samuel Brewer in Levoča. The Czech language of the Orbis was a mixture of the Czech, Slovak and even Polish language elements, which ultimately represented the preparatory phase of the standard Slovak language. To make the reading easier, Comenius prefaced the textbook with a so-called living alphabet. Translated into the mother tongue, the Orbis served not only as a textbook of Latin but became a source of visual learning for preschool children. The Orbis Spreads Out The Orbis pictus became a world popular Rozšíření Orbisu Orbis pictus se stal světově oblíbenou 23 Comenius een levend alfabet voor in het boek opnemen. 5b 5 language textbook, reaching its highest popularity and influence between Comenius’ death (1670) and the year 1780. It quickly spread from the German-speaking countries to England, where it was printed by the London publisher Charles Hoole as early as 1659. The twelfth edition, which is credited to William Jones, was printed in New York in 1798. The first Polish edition was published in 1667 thanks to the publisher Kaspar Müller of Wroclaw. The Orbis was very popular also in northern Europe, Denmark and Sweden. It was always adapted and supplemented depending on the language needs of the respective country. Illustrations and Developments Although the authorship of the original Nuremberg woodcuts is disputed, one thing is sure: all subsequent editions of the Orbis built on them. Justitia CXVI, 6 an opening image of the teacher and pupil in the 1666 copy printed in Nuremberg is signed I. Spörl. Sc. Another example is that of the Levoča edition, in which the illustrations were reworked by Jonah Bubenka, a Slovak Evangelical priest, teacher, composer, and an autodidact drawer and woodcarver, 7 Christianismus CXLVII aj.), přičemž na vyobrazení knihařství (obr. (bijv. Justitia CXVI, Christianismus CXLVII ) terwijl de afbeelding van het boekbinden (fig XCIII is gesigneerd door Abraham von Wert. who worked in Prešov and later in Levoča (he is signed in the figure LXXVII as: sculpsit Jonas Bubenkius Leutschoviae 1679). Several pictures in the 1667 Wroclaw edition are signed by G. Sturm (e.g. Justitia CXVI, Christianismus CXLVII et al.), while the illustration of the bookbinding (Fig. XCIII) is signed by Abraham von Wert. dílčí části jsou pak číselně propojeny s příslušným vysvětlujícím textem. Each chapter of the Orbis pictus is embellished with an illustration whose component parts are linked numerically with the explanatory text. Although it was a breakthrough teaching aid at that time, we must not overlook its visual similarity with the emblem books and older iconographical handbooks. The three components that could be find in the emblem books, i.e. the motto, pictura, and subscriptio, are in an equilibrium; together, the motto and the image create something like a puzzle whose solution is suggested in the subscriptio. Quite the opposite, the headlines in the Orbis pictus act as simple names, the images are illustrations, and texts describe the depicted scenes. What they have in common, though, is their intention to instruct through pictures and texts, and also a common basis of some figures. A telling example may be the Chapter XXI with a picture of farmland and forest birds. The hawk displayed with a stone in his claw is briefly characterized as ‘pervigil grus’ (i.e. ‘habitually vigilant’), a designation that comes from the writings of Aristotle and Pliny, which had often figured in the emblem books. Other examples are the illustrations that were inspired to a greater or lesser degree by older and allegorical traditions. This is the case of the personification of the moral virtues CIX–CXVII (Ethica, Prudentia, Sedulitas, Temperantia, Fortitudo, Patientia, Humanitas, Justitia, Liberalitas), of which e.g. the Wisdom (Prudentia) looks back to the 8 19 25 15 ‘pervigil grus’ ( ‘gewoonlijk waakzaam ‘), een omschrijving die afkomstig is uit de geschriften van Aristoteles en Plinius, die vaak figureerden in de emblemata. The aspect of the mirror reflects very well the standard iconography of the virtues, which is represented in the Iconologia by Cesare Ripa. A telescope as an instrument of ‘anticipation’ of the future might have been be inspired by the emblem XIV in Hermann Hugo’s book Pia Desideria (1624) or by its derivation in the book Emblemes by Francis Quarles (1635). The Baroque Bookbinding Even though there were numerous printing shops in the 17th century that could print books in higher volumes, they were still relatively expensive and therefore had to be protected against adverse effects. Understandably enough, one of the elementary means of protection was the bookbinding, which protected the book itself and also had an aesthetic value. The most common type of the bookbinding decoration of that time was the blind blocking. The decoration itself often consisted 20 Het barokke boekbinden Hoewel er tal van drukkerijen in de 17e eeuw bestonden die boeken in grote hoeveelheden konden drukken, waren boeken nog steeds relatief duur en werden zij daarom beschermd of Renaissance motifs, but the new elements of Baroque ornamentation appeared, too, in in particular different types of ornamental cartouches, mauresque netting motifs, narrow or broad bands with naturalistic floral motifs, but often also figural motifs. Tegelijkertijd verschenen gekleurde en bewerkte afbeeldingen die het boek The boards were usually covered with leather, either light cow leather, pigskin bleached with chalk or gypsum, calfskin or goatskin, or textiles (velvet, silk, brocade). Simpler books (books of prayers, broadside ballads, calendars, songbooks, etc.) were bound also in parchment, cardboard or paper. The boards were decorated using special bookbinding tools, so-called rollers, rulers or filets. The binding of valuable books was often gilded. In the 17th century, bleached leather with gold ornaments and inscriptions on the spine and front cover were very popular. The book spine grew in importance and was almost always gilded, notwithstanding the material of which a bookbinding was made: the spine is always exposed to the view of a visitor, even if a book lies based on a shelf. Silver or gold fittings, often skilfully incorporated into the binding, had mainly a decorative function. Changes during the 1800s Over the years, the Orbis pictus had undergone many changes. Current issues were addressed in the textbook and the illustrations were modernized, so that the textbook was up-to-date and reflected the true image of the outside world. Especially in the first half of the 19th century the content of all chapters was becoming obsolete due to the development of natural sciences. In retrospect, the inclusion of modern means of transport to the 1883 edition it may seem as the most significant change (Jan Pospíšil in Hradec Králové). The impact of the technological revolution and progress is already noticeable in the illustration depicting vehicles and transport. Similarly, coloured and reworked drawings began to appear in that period, which made the book more attractive for the readers. barokní výzdoby vynikají různé typy ornamentálních kartuší, síťové maureskní motivy, různě široké pásy s florálními motivy naturalistických forem, výjimkou však nejsou ani figurální náměty. Stříbrné či zlaté kování, mnohdy umě zakomponované do vazby, mají hlavně dekorativní funkci. Proměna Orbisu v 19. století Během historie svého vydávání prošel Orbis pictus mnohými proměnami. Docházelo k obohacování o aktuální témata a k modernizaci jednotlivých obrazů tak, aby učebnice odpovídala své době a dokládala pravdivou podobu okolního světa. De Orbis pictus werd verschillende malen herdrukt in de tweede helft van de 19e The rapid development of industry and sciences eventually resulted in a change in the whole structure of the Orbis. New concepts first began to appear in the German-speaking countries in the late 18th century (Johann Basedow, Elementarwerk, 1774). Comenius’ work was followed up by Jacob Eberhart Gailer who published the New Orbis pictus in 1832, in which the images were even more systematically arranged. In the Czech milieu, the Orbis pictus was analogously developed by Karel Slavoj Amerling (1807–1884), who issued the Orbis pictus, or The World in Pictures, second volume, as a continuation of the first volume written by Amos Comenius (1852). The original version is followed up very loosely and the main emphasis is put on science, scientific terminology, and small schematic drawings. Comenius’ legacy was similarly enriched by Pavel Jehlička, who edited the World in Pictures for the publishing house of Ignatius Leopold Kober (1865). However, rather than a language textbook, it was a children’s encyclopaedia describing the nature, geography, industry, history, etc. Full-page coloured illustrations printed by Voigt and Günter at the end of the book depict genre scenes with people engaged in various activities. The Orbis pictus was reprinted several times during the second half of the 19th century in new and new editions. In the 20th century, facsimiles of the original editions in different languages were published, as well as some more reprints, bibliophile editions, or critical editions comparing various original prints. Unorthodox Editions Currently, the Orbis pictus is known not only in Europe and America, but also in Japan, where it was published with the original woodcuts in 1998, or in Mexico (1993). které vytiskl ve své tiskárně „Nova Svetlost“ V. Het was bedoeld als leerboekje voor jonge kinderen en bevatte allerlei afbeeldingen van alledaagse voorwerpen, dieren en werkzaamheden, vergezeld met een stukje uitleggende tekst, in het Latijn en in de nationale taal. In 1658 the Czech Jan Amos Comenius wrote the Orbis sensualium pictus, which is generally considered the first real picture book for education of children in school. It contained all sorts of images of everyday objects, animals and activities, together with an explanatory text in Latin and in the national language. The first edition appeared in 1658, but it was translated and reprinted for centuries in many countries. Even in the current modern picture books you can still recognize elements from this extraordinary book. V knize byly znázorněny různé druhy každodenních předmětů, zvířat a činností spolu s vysvětlujícím textem v latině a ve vlastním, národním jazyce. Elize van der Werff Wereldbeeld verbeeld door kunstenaars The theologian, pedagogue and political philosopher Comenius was convinced that education and training are essential for the realisation of a better world. During his lifetime, 1592 - 1670, education was reserved for children of wealthy parents, especially boys. But Comenius thought that ‘teaching everything to everybody’ was a prerequisite for a world in which every individual can develop and people can understand and respect each other. No battle, but harmony. We asked contemporary artists to be inspired by this book of Comenius. In this catalog you will find some of the works and a short explanation of the artists. We hope that the innovative look of the contemporary artists on this topic gives interesting views and insights and will be able to connect to the interpretation of Comenius. Comenius pictured a view of the world. How do contemporary artists portray the world?
