worked on a part-time basis or who are taking a maternity leave.
J. Lencová, A.Merhautová, V.NaÀková, E.Petrová, J.Vacková and K.Stejskal participate in the tasks of
the Institute as members emeriti.
The Institute has been re-structured in 1994 in order to stress the responsibility of direct leaders of
individual projects. The previous Departments were substituted by Task Groups which integrate the
individual assignments according to their themes: Topography of Art Historical Monuments, Old Art,
Art of the 19th and 20the Centuries with Aesthetics, Architecture and Area Planning (STAS) and the
department of Information Services (comprising the library, photo archives, collections and
documentation files). The new structure was introduced after an authentication program which
concerned all the research workers employed by the Institute.

CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE INSTITUTE OF ART HISTORY
Art-loving architect Josef Hlávka founded Czech Academy of Science, Letters and Art in 1890.
Archeological Commission was attached to the Academy in 1893, instigated again by J. Hlávka. The
Commission concentrated on scholarly research, of artistic, historical, written and literary monuments.
Beginning in 1895, the program of the Archeological Commission included work on topographical
inventories, which was interrupted only in 1937; the break lasted for more than forty years.
Continuation of the task together with general support of art-historical research fell as a legacy to the
renewed Czechoslavak Academy of Sciences
The Institute was created as an Institute for Theory and History of Art of the Czechoslovak Academy of
Sciences in 1953, receiving a new statute in 1958. Vl. Novotn˘ was the first director (1953-58),
followed by J.Neumann (1959-69), replaced during the "normalization" era by S.·abouk (1970-78).
After his removing, J.Dvorsk˘ was named the new director (1979-90). Current designation of the
Institute was introduced in 1990 after election of T.Vlãek as its director (1990-92). After he left for the
Centr al European University, V.Lahoda was elected the new director. The Institute for Theory of
Architecture and Environment was created in 1964 as a part of the Academy of Sciences, and it was
attached to the Institute in 1986.
The Institute has been publishing the key Czech art historical journal "Umûní" (Art) since 1953 (42nd
volume in 1995) and the journal "Estetika" (Aesthetics) since 1963 (31 volumes so far). The most
important scholarly publications from the first decade of the Institute's activity were team works under
the leadership of Z.Wirth and V.Kotrba (Art-historical Monuments in Bohemia, 1957) and of J.Pe‰ina
(Gothic Wall Painting in Bohemia, Part I, 1958).
Annual Report 1994

During the 1960s, the researchers of the Institute published several important works, among others:
Gothic Mural Painting in Bohemia and Moravia 1300-1378 (English ed., 1964), R.Chadraba: Dürers
Apokalypse, Eine ikonologische Deutung (1964), J.Neumann: The Picture Gallery of the Prague Castle
(1964) and Baroque in Bohemia (1969), J.Krása: The Manuscripts of King Václav IV (1971) and
A.Merhautová: Early Medieval Architecture in Bohemia (1971).
The Institute organized, in 1965, an important international conference at the occasion of the opening of
the Picture Gallery of the Prague Castle. Members of the Institute waged a great campaign to save our
endangered monuments since the sixties and in 1968 they published a memorandum on the state of
historic monuments in Czechoslovakia. Sáva ·abouk was appointed Director of the Institute on July 1,
1970. Although general orientation of the work was enforcedly formed ideologically, the members of the
Institute did nevertheless publish many valuable titles, above all: F.Matou‰: Mittelalterliche Glasmalerei
in der Tschechoslowakei, Corpus vitrearum medii aevi (1975), V.Kotrba: The Baroque Gothic in
Bohemia,Oeuvre of Jan Santini Aichel (1976), K.Stejskal: Karl IV. und die Kultur und Kunst seiner
Zeit (1978). Important was also the part taken in writing entries on Bohemian art in the catalogue Die
Parler und der Schöne Stil (Köln 1978). The Institute has been publishing Czech art-historical
bibliography since 1971.
With the appointment of Jifií Dvorsk˘ as the new Director (1979-1990), the ideological burden was
lightened and a fruitful influence on activity of the Institute was exercised by its renowned Research
Curator Josef Krása (died in 1985). The former Institute for Architecture was re-attached in 1986 under
the name Centre for Theory of Architecture and Settlement Development. Publishing activity of the
Institute is notable during the eighties. Above all, following books should be mentioned: History of Art
in Bohemia,Vol.I:The Middle Ages (1984), Vol.II:Renaissance and Baroque (1989), Chapters from
Czech History of Art I-II (1987), Monuments of Art in Bohemia I-IV (1977-1982). Some of the more
important monographs: J.Kuthan: Die mittelalterliche Baukunst der Zisterzienser in Böhmen und
Mähren (1982), I.Hlobil: Theory of Historic City Reserves (1985), R.·vácha: From the Modern
Movement to Functionalism (1985), T.Vlãek: Prague 1900, Studies in History of Culture and Art
(1986), E.Fuãíková: Drawings in the Time of Rudolf II (1986), F.·mejkal: Josef ·íma
(1987),E.Fuãíková- B.Bukovinská-I.Muchka: Die Kunst am Hofe Rudolfs II. (1988; French edition in
1990, Czech edition in 1991), M.Procházka: Signs of Drama and Theatre (1988), J.Vacková:
Netherlandish Painting of the 15th and 16th Centuries - Collections in Czechoslovakia (1989),
A.Slepiãka: Transformation of Countryside (1989). From the point of view of an European context of
art history, important was also the part taken by E.Fuãíková, B.Bukovins ká, L.Koneãn˘ and I.Muchka
in preparation of the exhibitions of art in the era of Rudolf II in Essen (1988) and Vienna (1989), and by
T.Vlãek and D. Panenková in the exhibition of Bohemian Art-Nouveau glass of the Lötz company in
Düsseldorf - Böhmisches Glas 1880-1940 (1989). K.Stejskal prepared the posthumous publication of
J.Krása: Illuminated Manuscripts of the 13th to 16th Centuries in Bohemia (1990).
The research workers of the Institute elected a new Research Advisory Board in June 1990. The Board
elected T. Vlãek a new director and introduced a new concept of activity and of the new scholarly
orientation of the Institute.
***
New development of the activity of the Institute was based on a new structure and a new program.
During the years 1990-91, the Institute became a research organization clearly oriented in the field of art
history, in the problems of general aesthetics and theory of art and in research of architecture and urban
planning. The Institute concentrates its efforts on the knowledge of creative values of the cultural
heritage in our country. The methodological pluralism of current scholarship helps to show these values
in meaning and context which had been unrecognized or underestimated so far. Consequently, the main
tasks of the Institute are the following:
One of the most important tasks are Inventories of Art Historical Monuments. Before the end of 1994,
the introductory volume of the Art Historical Monuments in Moravia and Silesia (A-I, 656 pages) was
published by Academia (with the support from the Scholarly Publications Academy Fund). The first
volume of the Topography of Art Historical Monuments in Prague: Staré Mûsto and Josefov has also
been completed. Preparation of "corpuses" of medieval art in Bohemia continues especially in the field
of the medieval wall paintings and illuminated manuscripts. The editing of the Volume IV of the History
5
Annual Report 1994
of Art in Bohemia (1890-1938) will be finished soon and the work continues on the volume concerning
the 19th century. The extensive manuscript of the New Encyclopaedia of Art in Bohemia, written by
more than 200 authors, is completely edited and prepared for printing. Numerous teams of specialists
take part in these projects and an indispensable prerequisite of their work is a wide availability of
documentation, provided by the service departments of the Institute (i.e. the library, the photo archives
and the art and documentation collections).
In the period 1991-94, the major part of individual assignments was granted support either from the
Academy of Sciences or in the form of foreign grants. Some of the projects are connected with the
preparation of important exhibitions in cooperation with the National Gallery in Prague, the Municipal
Gallery in Prague and with the Office of the President of the Republic. Other projects will be connected
with organization of international scholarly conferences. Members of the Institute presented three
contributions at the last international art historical Congress in Berlin. In 1991, the Institute took part in
an important exhibition of Czech Cubism 1909-1925, accompanied by a catalogue, which won the
prestigious award Prix ASDA. The Czech version of the catalogue was awarded the prize by the
Academy of Sciences in 1992. One of the authors of the exhibition and the catalogue, Vojtûch Lahoda,
received the Josef Krása Award (1991). In the framework of the international research project of the
Austrian Ministry for Research and Science, a symposium was held in the spring of 1992 in Strakonice
on the medieval wall painting in Southern Bohemia and Upper Austria. In the framework of the grant,
L.BydÏovská prepared the catalogue for the exhibition of The Artificialism.
Scholarly results of the members of the Institute are represented by their wide publishing activity. In the
recent years, the most important publications were: "Humanism and Early Renaissance in Moravia" (in
Czech, by I.Hlobil and E.PetrÛ, 1992), "Prague - l'Avenir d'une ville historique capitale" (collection of
presentations from the conference organized by the Institute in 1991), "Le Chateau de Prague et ses
Trésors d'art" (I.Hlobil, I.Muchka, T.Vlãek) and "Pfiemysl Otakar II." (J.Kuthan, Vimperk 1993).
In 1993, the exhibition and the scholarly catalogue "Die Vergangene Zukunft - Tschechische Moderne
1890-1918" were prepared for the Künstlerhaus in Vienna, and in Prague, the exhibition of Bohumil
Kubi‰ta..
Large segment in the Institute's activity is concentrated on the problems of the preservation of
monuments. Important result of this activity was, among others, the meeting that discussed the theme
of "Care of Monuments: A Conflict Between Specialists or a Crisis of the System?" organized by the
Institute. The meeting instigated creation of the "Prague Association for Preservation and Development
of the Cultural Area of the Capital". The association of representatives from several institutions which
closely cooperate with the institutions of the system for preservation of monuments, grew to become an
important factor and it enables the art historical public to independently pronounce its opinion on the
most important problems. The Institute also instigated, in October 1993, a wide-ranging campaign to
save the the church of St.Michael, which was supported also by the Charles's University, in the person
of its Rector, and the State Institute for the Care of Monuments. As a result of a public campaign in the
media, two specialist commissions were established: one of them formulated for the Ministry of
Culture the requirements for the new law on monuments (the Institute was represented by I.Hlobil,
I.Muchka and P.Kratochvíl), the other one prepared the law on export of historical objects (I.Muchka).
In 1994, the Institute organized, in cooperation with the Municipal Gallery in Prague and with the CEU,
an exhibition and international symposium "Karel Teige and the European Avant-Guarde", where about
40 foreign participants took part. Employees of the Institute collaborated in the preparation of the
exhibition and catalogue Ohniska znovuzrození. âeské umûní 1956-1963 (NG in Prague). Among most
important publications by the Institute in 1994 counts Katedrála sv. Víta v Praze - The Cathedral of
St.Vitus in Prague (edited by A.Merhautová, with contributions by K.Bene‰ovská, L.BydÏovská,
I.Hlobil, I.Muchka, T.Petrasová, M.·ronûk, Z.V‰eteãková), âeská architektura v dobû posledních
PfiemyslovcÛ - Architecture in Bohemia During the Era of the Last Pfiemyslids (J. Kuthan), Volné
smûry (L.BydÏovská), Karel âern˘ (V.Lahoda). To commemorate the anniversary of the founding of
St. Vitus cathedral two more books vere published - Katedrála sv. Víta. Pamûtní vydání k 650. v˘roãí
zaloÏení svatovítské katedrály I.-II (I.Hlobil), St.-Veits-Dom Prag (I.Muchka).
To commemorate the anniversary of the death of the important Byzantologue N.P.Kodakov and ensuing
foundation in Prague of an institute bearing his name, the Institue of Art History prepared, in
cooperation with the National Gallery and the Arts and Crafts Museum an exhibition from its
collections. Together with a scholarly symposium it will take place in February, 1995 (see below).

V.Lahoda, L.BydÏovská and R.·vácha participate in preparing the exhibition concept and the scholarly
catalogue of the new permanent exhibition of Czech modern art (1900-1960) in the VeletrÏní palác.
During 1994, the work on the exhibition and catalogue "Moderní revue 1894-1925" was started (curator
O.M.Urban for the National Gallery in Prague - St.Agnes' Cloister, May - August 1995). The project
will present the cultural journal which was important at the turn of the 19th enad 20th centuries in the
local Czech milieu. At the same time, an international conference "The Enigma of Modernism" will take
place, which will be organized by the CEU with the cooperation of the Institute.
RESEARCH PROJECTS
Topography of Art Historical Monuments in Prague
Project Leader: P.Vlãek
The first two volumes (Staré Mûsto and Josefov, Nové Mûsto and Vy‰ehrad) recieved a Government
grant (see below). Following volumes (Malá Strana, Hradãany and the later quarters of the city) are
being prepared. The monograph of the Cathedral of St.Vitus was written as a parallel to the topography
inventories (see in the Bibliography).
Topography of Art Historical Monuments in the Kutná Hora District
Project Leader: B.Altová*, in the second half of the year the responsibility for elaboration of the secular
and sacred architecture and movable objects was assigned, respectively, to D.Líbal, J.Kuthan and
I.Kofián.
Collaborators: A.Jirka, I.Kofián, J.Kuthan, R.·vácha, P.Vlãek. External collaborators: D.Líbal, P.Macek,
+ J.Muk, J.Roháãek
The part devoted to sacred architecture was completed in 1994 by J.Kuthan. Unfortunately, the
coordinator responsible for the complicated subject of the town architecture has died during this year.
Because of that, the Topography will be published in two volumes, starting with the one devoted to the
sacred architecture, which is ready for editing.
The volume devoted to the castle of Îleby has been completed. It contains ca 300 pages typescript and
ca 500 photographs, describing ca one thousand movable objects fo the important collection acquired
during the second half of the 19th century by the aristocratic family of Auerspergs. The text is being
edited and during 1995 it will be given to print.
Art Historical Monuments in Moravia and Silesia
Project leader: A.Filip
Collaborator: B.Samek*
Following the four-volume edition of Monuments of Art in Bohemia, the Institute for History of Art
began a systematic elaboration of the regions of Moravia and Silesia in 1979. The first volume of the
inventory (A-I) was published in December 1994. It contains 568 localities (from Adamov to IváÀ)
arranged in alphabetical order according to the political arrangement of the state as of January 1, 1981.
Each entry is followed by scholarly bibliography from the years 1945-89. The volume contains a map,
registers of the abandoned local names and of the authors with basic data. It has 656 pages, 694
photogrpahs and 197 analyticla plans. The second volume (J-N) is a completed manuscript and is being
edited. The project recieved grants both by the Academy and by the Government (see below).
History of Art in Bohemia, Vol.III-V
Editor: V.Lahoda
Executive Editor: M.Ne‰lehová
Collaborators: L.BydÏovská, T.Petrasová, R.·vácha, T.Vlãek,
Z.Matyásko (photographer)
The History of Art in Bohemia continues to be one of the priorities of the Institute. The volume III,
planned originally in two parts, was divided in two individual volumes: Vol. III will deal with the art of
the 19th C. and Vol. IV will be devoted to the years 1890-1939. Art since 1939 till present will be contained in Vol.V.The IIIrd and IVth vol. received a grant from the government grant agency (see bellow).

New Encyclopedia of Art in Bohemia (Handbook of Art in Bohemia)
Editor: A.Horová
The new edition of the Encyclopedia of Art in Bohemia (1975) was enlarged by inedita, new findings
and the themes and personages that were tabu in the previous era, while the rest of entries was edited to
become more actual. Encyclopeadia includes painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, applied art, stage
design, design, computer art, photography, animated film, art history, aesthetics, art theory and criticism.
It contains monograph entries on individual artists (born before 1963), theoreticians, critics and
historians of art (those who have died), entries concerning artistic styles, trends, groups, associations,
important institutions, specialized schools and historical mecenes (religious orders, aristocratic
collectors, etc.). In some cases, also entries on terminology and technology were included. The
completed and edited manuscript contains almost 3.000 entries and is 4.500 pages typescript long. It has
been completely prepared for print since November 1994. Currently, the conditions of publishing are
being negotiated. 228 specialists from art history and related fields took part in the project.
Catalogue of the Illuminated Manuscripts in the National Library in Prague, Part 1
(Manuscripts from collections of monasteries in Teplá, Osek, Bfievnov, Knights of the Cross and the
Franciscans in Prague-Nové Mûsto)
Project leader: H.Hlaváãková
Collaborators: K.Stejskal, M.Studniãková, P.Paul (photographer)
After the end of the grant the work on the enlarged project continued in the framework of research
projects of the Institute. Some more manuscripts and fragments, which are now kept in other places
than the National Library in Prague (in the archives of the Academy of Sciences and in the municipal
archives in PlzeÀ) but which belong to the same original monastery collections, were incorporated into
the catalogue. Finishing touches were added to the completed part (acquiring photograph originals for
print and editing in collaboration with codicological specialists). Completion of the first part and its
publishing is subject to a grant application at the Academy Grant Agency.
Exhibition and Symposium in Honor of the 70th Anniversary of N.P.Kondakov's
Death and the Founding of the Kondakov Institute
Project leader: H.Hlaváãková
Collaborator: J.Roháãek
The year 1995 will mark the 70th anniversary of the death of the important Byzantologue
N.P.Kondakov and the ensuing founding in Prague of an institute, bearing his name and concentrating
the most important Byzantological research of that time, together with studies of Russian and Eastern
European art. The Kondakov Institute was abolished in 1952 and its archives, library and collection of
icons were in part given to the Institute of Art History.
The important anniversary will be remembered by an exhibition in cooperation with the National
Gallery in Prague, showing selected icons, fragments of Islamic and Coptic textiles, early medieval
enkolpia, and other objects. In the introductory part, the activity of the Kondakov Institute will be
documented by a selection of archive documents. The extensive catalogue was written by
H.Hlaváãková, J.Roháãek and external collaborators (L.Konviãka, N.BaÏantová, V.Novák and
L.Neme‰kal). It represents the first elaboration of the extensive and so far completely unknown
collections of the Kondakov Institute. The catalogue is being published with financial support from
Komerãní banka and PRO HELVETIA Ost/West. The exhibition will open on February 15, 1995 and
during the three following days the Institute (J.Roháãek) will organize together with the Slavonic
Institute of the Charles's University an international scholarly symposium. 41 contributions, mostly
from foreign scholars, are planned for the symposium.
Karel Teige, Exhibition, scholarly catalogue and symposium
Project leader in the Institute: R.·vácha (curator of the exhibition is K.Srp from the Municipal Gallery in
Prague)
Collaborators: L.BydÏovská, V.Lahoda, F.Krejãí (photographer)
Cooperation in preparing the catalogue of the largest retrospective exhibition of the most important
theoretician of our avant-guarde movement between the wars, K.Teige. L.BydÏovská, V.Lahoda and
R.·vácha took part in writing the catalogue. The exhibition took place between March 15 - May 1, 1994,

at the Municipal Gallery in Prague - the "Bell House". The exhibition was accompanied by an
international colloquium "Karel Teige and the European Avant-guarde", organized by the Institute
together with the Municipal Gallery and the Central European University. The contributions will be
published in a special volume of Umûní (1-2/1995).
Urban Planning and Environment
Project leader: J.Macháãek
Collaborators: M.Carvanová, J.Mouãka, P.Zieschang
The project is oriented at assessing the influence on environment of economical and other activities
from the vantage point of a development concept of settlement and area units. If possible, it will
concentrate on individual areas, above all the EUROREGIO NISA. The results can be used both on the
central and regional government level and also for university teaching. Information was collected in
1994.
Contemporary Czech Architecture
Project leader: P.Kratochvíl
Collaborator: P.Halík
The research project is aimed at the contemporary local architecture during the last two decades. In
difference from most European countries, the period has not been systematically elaborated in our
country (the last publication on the theme concerns only the seventies). But it was the younger
generation of architects, who started to work in the eighties, who brought up new ideas, eroded the
schemes of the late Modern and renewed the contact of local architecture with the current develompents
in Europe and in the world. Our strong Functionalist tradition together with limited technological
conditions did not allow such a wide range of architectural trends to appear, from postmodern to hightec to deconstruction, but the development in the nineties introduced new, invigorating tendencies. The
project wants to present in a form of a book the main trends, key personalities and top realizations of
this period.
PROJECTS WITH GRANT FROM THE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
Rudolf II and His Era (Grant 1991-93)
Exhibition and scholarly catalogue
Project leader: E.Fuãíková*
Collaborators: B.Bukovinská, J.Hausenblasová, M.Halata, L.Koneãn˘*, I.Muchka, M.·ronûk
F.Krejãí and P. Paul (photographers)
Exhibition called Rudolf II and Prague will embrace the years 1550-1650. Prague was the seat of an
Emperor and ranged among the most important centres of politics, culture and science in Europe on the
turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. This was shown already by exhibitions in Essen and Vienna in 1988
(Prag um 1600). The proposed project will use experience acquired by both exhibitions and summarize
both the results of earlier research and the new archival research, undertaken since March, 1990, in
collaboration with Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, in terms of OWP of the Austrian Academy of
Sciences (see below). An emphasis laid on architecture and environment of Prague will form an
important aspect of the exhibition, together with the use of authentic rooms in the Prague Castle.
The exhibition will be divided in two parts concerning the art of the court and of the towns, with two
individual volumes of catalogue A database for the catalogue entries was elaborated and it was fed
before the end of 1994 with data concerning almost 3.000 art items. The date of the exhibition was
moved to 1997 and the work will continue as a part of internal Institute's project Nr 43 together with a
newly formulated project concentrating on elaboration of the town culture which has recieved the
Academy grant (see below).
History of Architecture of the Devûtsil Group (grant 1991-93)
Josef Chochol (1880-1956). Profiles of architects of the Devûtsil
Group. Jaromír Krejcar (1895-1949)
Project leader: R.·vácha
9
Annual Report 1994
The project is based on the Devûtsil exhibition that was last presented in London and Oxford in 1990. In
the course of the project the work of Josef Chochol was closely examined (cf. the articles by R.·vácha
in the catalogue Kubismus in Prag and in Umûní). Another results: exhibition of V.Obrtel in the
Municipal Gallery in Prague, entries on the architects from the Devûtsil Group for the New
Encyclopedia of Art in Bohemia, research into the role played by K.Teige in the architecture of the
group (see articles in the journal Rassegna and the K.Teige exhibition) and analysis of the concept of the
most important project works by J.Krejcar (see e.g. the catalogue The Art of the Avantgarde in
Czechoslovakia, 1918-1938). The grant has been completed in January 1994 and its results were used in
preparation of the exhibitions of Karel Teige (see) and of Jaromír Krejcar, prepared for the Galery of
Jaroslav Fragner for 1995.
Artificialism (grant 1991-93)
Project leader: L.BydÏovská, Z.Matyásko (photographer)
The aim of this project was to study a special artistic movement, artificialism, developed by painters
·t˘rsk˘ and Toyen in Prague and Paris in 1926-1931. The theme crosses over to the context of
European avant-garde of the twenties, and artificialism undoubtedly belongs to this context not only
thanks to its quality and originality, but also because of the fact, that Toyen is one of the few Czech
painters with a truly European repute due to her later long-time activity in the Breton's circle in France.
An exhibition with a scholarly catalogue was organized in 1992 under the name "·tyrsk˘ and Toyen:
Artificialism" in the East-Bohemian Gallery in Pardubice, in the Gallery of Art in Karlovy Vary and in
the Czech Museum of Art in Prague. Partial results of the research were published in form of lectures
and articles (see Bibliography). A new Academy grant follows the concluded work, concerning the
Surrealist Group in Czechoslovakia (see).
Vincenc Kramáfi. Collector, Art Historian and Propagator of Cubism
(grant 1991-93)
Project leader: V.Lahoda
Collaborating photographers: F.Krejãí, Z.Matyásko
The project concentrated on a detailed research of art-historical activity of V.Kramáfi, an important
Czech art-historian and collector of French Cubism, namely of works of P.Picasso. The work followed
also Kramáfi as a theoretician whose ideas evaluated in a special form his collecting and organization
activity. Partial results were published in the form of articles (see Bibliography). The grant was
concluded in January 1994. New findings will be used for preparation of the catalogue and exhibition of
the Kramáfi collection in the former Great Exhibition Palace - the new premises for the collections of
modern art of the National Gallery in Prague (see the research project Czech Art 1900-1960). To study
the realiton of V.Kramáfi to important art peronages of his era in Europe, the leader of the project was
awarded a grant from The Getty Grant Program (study trips to Paris, London, Vienna, Berlin and
Düsseldorf).
Urban Morphology (grant 1991-93)
Project leader: P.Kratochvíl

Historical town forms are eloquent documents of history of culture. Interpretation of their meanings
can provide conceptional impulses for architectural production and for urbanism, striving to create a
formally clearly defined town stage and enrich a theory of preservation of monuments with methods of
analyzing wider spatial framework. Urban morphology aims at an identification of constitutive elements
of town forms and their relationship,at interpretation of connected meaning and at clarification of their
bond to history. The grant was concluded in January 1994. The project work resulted in a study (ca 200
pages typescript) dealing with the methodology and the theoretical basis of morphological analyses in
such a way that it could be applied to Czech towns and used for actual architectural activity. The study
was published in 1994 as a handbook of the Academy of Arts.

musical semantics and on the use of the results for musical semiotics. In the terms of the grant two
collections of essays were edited, in cooperation with Österreichische Gesellschaft für Semiotik; 25
Czech and Slovak researchers took part in the publications (one of them see in Bibliography, the other
one, Semiotics of Culture - Cultural Semiotics will be published in Bloomington). Several other articles
were published in Czech and foreign journals (see Bibliography). Collaboration with the Academy of
Modern Arts school in Bratislava continued (seminary on semiotics and lecture texts). The work
continues in the framework of the grant awarded by the B.MartinÛ Foundation and in cooperation with
the Institute of Informatics and Computing.
Medieval Wall Painting in Prague and Its Environs (grant 1992-94)
Project leader: Z.V‰eteãková
Collaborators: H.Hlaváãková, M.Stránská, F.Krejãí (photographer)
The grant projects deals with the primary research of wall paintings in Prague and its environs. In 1993,
the buildings in Staré Mûsto were elaborated and also ten localities near Prague. Shortened version of
the results was used for the text of the Topography of Monuments in Prague. As a result of the project,
in 1994 a catalogue containing 54 places was completed. The work continues in those localities where
the restorer's analyzes have not been finished yet. Following this reasearch should be the grant (applied
for) concernning the medieval wall paintings in Central Bohemia. The results of both grants should be
finally published as a Corpus of Medieval Wall Paintings in Prague and Central Bohemia.
The Prague Baroque Sculpture (grant 1992-94)
Project leader: I.Kofián
The project aims at a wider elaboration of the Baroque sculpture in Prague with the use of the results of
the latest scholarship. The grant was completed in January 1994 and its results were summarized in
articles (see Bibliography) and the material prepared for entries in the Dictionary of Art and the New
Encyclopaedia of Art in Bohemia (see).
Antonín Veith - a Romantic Patron of Art (grant 1992-94)
Project leader: H.Lorenzová
The project aims at showing the role played in the history by enlightened sponsors and patrons of art
and, at the same time, their importance in the cultural relationship between Czechs and Germans in the
era of the country-based patriotism. A.Veith created a cultural center at the castle of Libûchov whose
renown spread over the borders of Austria. He concentrated many important artists and scholars to
freely create and realize interesting projects (e.g. Slavín, so-called Czech Walhalla) with the rich support
of the landlord. The grant was concluded in 1994.
It resulted in several studies and lectures, and a monograph, some of them have already been published
(see Bibliography), some are in print.
King John of Bohemia and the Art in His Era (grant 1993-95)
Project leader: K.Bene‰ovská
Collaborators (from the Institute): H.Hlaváãková, I.Hlobil*,
J.Kuthan, Z.V‰eteãková, M.Stránská*, P.Paul (photographer)
The project was accepted as an internal Academy grant and in 1994, 84.000 Kã were recieved. The
timetable had to be changed, because the exhibition in Luxembourg in 1995 was abolished. The
exhibition should be held in Prague in 1996 while the participation of Luxembourg will be specified on
the grounds of the new cultural agreement. The main organizing activity in 1994 was elaboration of
several budgets, because the main problem of the exhibition lies in its financial backing. In 1995, the
texts for the catalogue will be edited and translated.
The "Informel" Concept in the Czech Art of 1950-1965 (grant 1993-95)
Project leader:M.Ne‰lehová
Collaborating photographer: Z.Matyásko
The project will result in a publication. It wants to recapture and evaluate the abstract expression which
was a special Czech alternative, in the post-war art, to the European "Informel". It deals with the genesis
and creative development of the phenomenon that reached painting, prints, drawings and sculpture. The

resulting text will be supplemented by an anthology of sources. In 1994, the heuristic work took place in
public and private collections, together with collecting the photographic documentation. Partial results
were incorporated in the collaboration of the exhibition and catalogue Ohniska znovuzrození - âeské
umûní 1956-63 (see below) and in articles and lectures (see below).
Art Historical Monuments in Moravia and Silesia (grant 1994-95)
Project leader: A.Filip
Collaborator: B.Samek
The aim of the project is completion of the second volume of the Art Historical Monuments in
Moravia and Silesia series (see the internal research projects of the Institute). The data were collected
and research in the field took place in 1994. In 1995, the texts will be actualized and new literature will
be added. The photographic documentation and plans will be completed together with registers. The
second volume will be edited and prepared for print.
The Surrealist Group in Czechoslovakia and Art (grant 1994-96)
Project leader: L.BydÏovská
Collaborators: V.Lahoda, R.·vácha
Photographers: F.Krejãí, Z.Matyásko*
The aim of the project is to prepare a retrospective exhibition of Czech Surrealist art dating between the
beginning of the thirties and the beginning of the fifties. It will be held in Prague in 1996 (the Municipal
Gallery in Prague) and abroad in 1997. It will be accompanied by an extensive catalogue in both Czech
and English, compiled by a numerous team of local and foreign scholars. The first phase of the project
was the participation in the exhibition and colloquium on Karel Teige (see below).
The Prague Castle, Hraãany and Malá Strana in the Years 1600-1620 (grant 1994-95)
Project leader: J.Hausenblasová
Collaborator: I.Muchka
The project is one part of the extensive research of art and culture during the reign of the Emperor
Rudolf II (see) which stresses the study and publication of written sources. The aim is to transcribe and
publish the "Lodgings Book of Malá Strana and Hradãany" from 1608 and the "Description of the
Prague Castle" from 1620. Both sources describe in great detail individial buildings in the places
mentioned and contain the names of people who lived in houses and rented places. In such a way, they
make possible a detailed knowledge of these historical Prague quarters from many aspects. Very
valuable are the data, unknown so far, concerning the artists and other personalities active at the Rudolf's
court. Also the composition of rooms in individual buildings is clear from the texts together with
contemporary terms and names. The texts will also attribute to the knowledge of social and national
structure of the population in Prague on the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. The texts will be edited
in collaboration with Z.Hojda (Department of Archive Studies, Charles's University) and V.Vávrová
and P.Chotûbor (Office of the President). The publication will be financially backed by the grant from
the Government agency (see below).
The Epigraphical Catalogue Prague - Staré Mûsto (grant 1994-96)
Project leader: J.Roháãek
The project will create and publish a specialized epigraphical catalogue of inscriptions found on the
historical monuments in Staré Mûsto, together with a selective photographic documentation. The limit is
set at the year 1650, in selected cases before 1800. Museum and other collections will not be included.
The work is coordinated with the grant Topography of Art Historical Monuments in Prague (see). In
1994, the churches of Our Lady before T˘n, St.Gallus and St.Egidius were completed.
Prague 1550-1650 (grant 1994-95)
Project leader: M.·ronûk
Collaborators: B.Bukovinská, M.Halata, I.Muchka
In the years 1990-93 the grant project "Rudolf II and his Era" was elaborated at the Institute. During the
work it appeared clearly, that in order to present the genius loci of the Prague of Rudolf II, it is necessary
to undertake a more extensive research of the sources and art objects from Czech collections, mostly

uknonwn so far. The grant is coordinated with preparation of the second half of the exhibition and its
catalogue (see above). In 1994, the concept of this part of the exhibition was elaborated, the exhibits
were selected and their technical data and documentation were completed. M. Halata finished editing of
ca 400 pages typescript of the "Book of St.Luke's Guild from the years 1600-1656" for the planned
publication series Fontes Historiae Artium, M.·ronûk prepares accompanying information about
individual painters mentioned in the text.

The Grant Agency of the Czech Republic decided in September 1993 to award the grant for the project
"Topography of Art Historical Monuments in Prague". The project is elaborated in cooperation with the
Institute of History of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague (headed by Prof.
M.Pavlík) and with other external specialists.
The work is based on the internal Institute project of the same name that has been active since 1991.
The grant finances were used mainly to buy computer hardware and to remunerate external
collaborators. In 1994, the completed texts on Staré Mûsto nad Josefov were edited and a list of
illustrations was being prepared. The book should appear in November 1995 at latest. At the same time,
the work on the second volume, devoted to Nové Mûsto and Vy‰ehrad, was started. The volume will
have 1178 entries and because of their great number, only ca one third of them was finished before the
end of 1994. In the first months of 1995, the work will start also on the third volume, the Topography
of Malá Strana and Hradãany.
History of Art in Bohemia - Vols. III, IV (grant 1993-95)

The grant was awarded to complete the two unfinished volumes which comprise the 19th century
(Vol.III) and the years between 1890-1939 (Vol.IV) - see also the internal research projects. The
manuscripts and photographic documentation of Vol.IV will be completed in the beginning of 1995 and
before July it will be given over to the publishing house Academia. Many important external
collaborators take part in preparation of Vol.IV. The grant funds went to buy the greatest part of colour
photographs for the volume. The Vol.III is completed for 70% and its text should be written before the
end of 1995.
Art Historical Topography of Moravia and Silesia (grant 1994-95)
Project leader: A.Filip
Collaborator: B.Samek*
The grant is connected to the Academy grant for the project of the same name (see above) and the
funds will be used predominantly to provide computer, literature and photographic documentation for
the workplace in Brno.
The Prague Castle, Hradãany and Malá Strana in the Years 1600-1620 (grant 1994-95)
Project leader: J.Hausenblasová
The grant was awarded to support the edition of the two important textual sources for the history of the
Prague during the reign of Rudolf II (see the grant by the Academy agency). Publication of unique
archival sources which have been completely unknown until now, is important not only with regard to
the preparation of the exhibition of Rudolf and Prague, but also for research in other fields of history.

Rudolf II (1576-1612): Geschichte, Kunst und Kultur
Project leader: B.Bukovinská, R.Distelberger (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna)
Collaborators: E.Fuãíková*, J.Hausenblasová, L.Koneãn˘*, I.Muchka, H.Haupt (Vienna)
The grant was awarded as a part of the OWP (Ost-West Programm) of the Austrian Academy of
Sciences to support cooperation between the scholars from Austria and from Central and Eastern
European countries, it is financed by the Austrian Ministry for Research and Science. The project aims
at a complex evaluation of the personality of Rudolf II in the context of Czech and Austrian cultural
history. The results will be presented in the form of an exhibition in 1997, of several monographs and of
publication of archival sources. Presently, the research concentrates mainly on research in the archives in
Prague and in Vienna and on study trips in both cities.
The partial result is represented by ca 400 pages typescript of transcribed archival documents and
several scholarly articles, some of them published (see Bibliography) and some of them intended to
accompany the publication of documents and the scholarly catalogue of the exhibition. Archival research
continues with the same intensity and the work is integrated in both cities to such a degree that it was
possible, in many cases, to complete data from documents which were split in two collections in 1921.
Beziehungen zwischen der böhmischen und österreichischen Wandmalerei im
Mittelalter
Project leader: Z.V‰eteãková and E. Lanc (ÖAW Bundesdenkmalamt Wien)
Collaborators: H.Hlaváãková, J.Kuthan
The grant was awarded for three years as a part of the OWP of the Austrian Academy of Sciences,
financed by the Austrian Ministry for Research and Science. Its aim is to inventorize the medieval wall
paintings in Bohemia and Moravia and to evaluate their relationship to wall paintings in Austria. In the
framework of the grant two international conferences were organized: "The Culture of the Hussite Era"
in 1991, and "Medieval Wall Paintings from the 14th and the Beginning of the 15th Centuries in
Southern Bohemia and Upper Austria" in 1992. Most of the presentations were published in "Umûní"
in 1992 and 1993 volumes (see Bibliography).
The grant was completed with a final text in September 1994, the results were used in relevant
corpuses.

exhibition activity (individual and group exhibitions of both Czech and foreign authors held in the Czech
Republic, and of Czech artists abroad), of publication (accessible bibliographical data, reviews of
exhibitions, improtant articles, etc.). The work will comprise research in archives and posthumous
papers together with interwievs of artists and art historians. The period is divided into four parts, 194548, 1949-55, 1956-64 and 1965-70.
In 1994, the exhibitions held in Prague and outside of it in the period between 1945 and 1948 were
listed and the greater part of posthumous papers of J.Peãírka, concerning the period after 1945, was
analyzed. For the documentation work the computer Mac PowerBook 520,8/160 CZ was bought and in
the FileMaker Pro the database was created and fed with relevant data.

JOURNALS PUBLISHED BY THE INSTITUTE

The journal has been published by the Insitute of Art History since 1953. It follows the tradition
founded by the journal of the same name which had been published by Jan ·tenc since 1918. The most
important personalities among Czech art historians have served as Editors in Chief, among others
Jaroslav Pe‰ina, Emanuel Poche and Josef Krása.The journal serves to present the results of Czech art
history. The published articles concern mostly the history of art in Bohemia and Moravia, but also more
internationally oriented studies are published, among them also bohemica by foreign authors, e.g. by
J.Bialostocki, G.Schmidt, H.Lorenz, U.Kultermann, M.S.Frinta, R.Gibbs, I.Hueck and R.Suckale.
Articles published in Umûní observe the history of art since the Early Middle Ages until the 20th
century. Recently, the journal tries to contact scholars abroad and to make the values of both earlier and
modern Czech art accessible to foreign readers. To achieve that, the journal changed in 1993 not only ist
layout, but also the system of summaries and annotations and the numbers of articles published in
foreign languages. Since 1994 the list of acquisitions is published in cooperation with the libraries of the
National Gallery and UmûleckoprÛmyslové muzeum.
Published 6 times a year, edition of 900 copies, 80 pages.

Estetika (Aesthetics)
Editor in Chief: T.Vlãek
Executive Editor: H.Lorenzová
Board of Editors: J.Bako‰, J.Hlaváãek, M.Jankoviã, A.Mokrej‰, P.Osolsobû, M.Ottlová, M.Petfiíãek jr.,
M.Procházka, I.Vojtûch, J.Zumr, V.Zuska
The journal is oriented interdisciplinary, it integrates and confronts results of aesthetics, philosophy,
sociology, psychology, ethics and both theoretical and methodological aspects of artistic theory and
criticism. From such a vantage point, its place among scholarly serials is unique.
Historically oriented articles show the tradition of Czech aesthetics that reached a world renown thanks
to O.Zich, K.Svoboda, J.Mukafiovsk˘ and J.Patoãka. Fifteen original studies were published in 1993 by
both Czech and foreign authors and three articles were published in translation, together with many
reviews and relations. The DOCUMENTS rubric is stressed, publishing work of some unjustly
forgotten Czech aestheticians, theoreticians and philosophers of art. Their not generally available articles
are reprinted, this year it was an extensive study by Emanuel from Le‰ehrad "Alred Mombert".
Important was also the first Czech translation of an extensive article by the German-writing philosopher
and esthetician F.T.Bratránek, who was born in Brno, "On the Exegesis of the Concept of Beauty", and
the first Czech translation of the text by the German-writing mathematician, esthetician and philosopher
B.Bolzano, who was born in Prague, "On the Concept of Beauty". Articles by contemporary Czech
authors are supplemented by an English or German summary. The 1994 volume is the thirty-first, since
1993 the journal is published in cooperation with the Czech Learned Society for Aesthetics.
Published 4 times a year, edition of 800 copies, 64 pages. Subscription orders accepted by PNS. Sold in

Board of Trustees: S.Adamczyková, B.Bukovinská, P.Halík, I.Hlobil, L.Koneãn˘ (Dept. of Art History,

The collection of library contains as of December 31, 1994, in total 66 234 volumes of books,
catalogues and serials. 9038 volumes belong to the library of the former Kondakov Institute, ca 2000
volumes form the collections from the legacy of Prof.Cibulka, another closed collections is formed by
part of the library of Z.Wirth.
All new art historical publications (including theory and methodology and related fields, as aesthetics)
in Czech Rep. are bought. Publications from abroad are acquired mainly by way of international

exchange with scholarly institutions and libraries, a small part of subscripted serials is bought.
Acquisitions number ca 1000 volumes per year. The library exchanges with 66 partners from 16
countries. 216 journals are subscripted, 91 of them from abroad. In 1990, the library recieved by way of
exchange with the International Foundation for Art Research (New York) 76 volumes of the inventory
of world prints collections: The Illustrated Bartsch, Abaris Books, Nwew York. the series is being
gradually completed.
In 1991, the Institute of Art History was granted by the Getty Grant Project funds to buy books for
40.000 US $. A committee for coordination of buying policies was established in this connection,
formed by S.Adamczyková and Z.V‰eteãková (ÚDU), T.Pergler and L.Kesner jr. (National Gallery)
and L.Koneãn˘ (University). At the same time, a Council of Art Historical Libraries was established,
formed by representatives from the Insitute, National Gallery, Museum of Arts and Crafts, Academy of
Art, Institute for Preservation of Monuments, Academy of Arts and Crafts and the Masaryk University
in Brno. The grant funds were used up in 1994, in total 710 book titles and 9 journals were bought
(among others, the Saur Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon and the legacy of dr.J.Krãálová).
The libarary was closed since October 1993 because of moving to the new premises in Husova Str. The
study room with the reference library and journals opened before the end of June, 1994. The newly
acquired rooms were fixed and equipped with compact movable racks and in this way it was possible,
for the first time, to concentrate in the most modern and efficient way and in one place the complete
book collection of the Institute (with the exception of the library of the former Kondakov Institute which
is still housed in Vojtû‰ská Str.). Although the library was closed for most of the year, it was used by 50
readers during 1994 and 224 loans were realized, 538 more in attendance. The library is fully accessible
since January 1995 and it provides for the wide scholarly public including students all the library,
information and reproduction services according to the Library Rules.
The Insitute has been publishing the Czech Art Historical Bibliography since 1971. Beacuase of
reduced financial means, the work had to be curtailed and the bibliography slipped out of schedule. The
combined years 1986-87 were published in 1993. It was decided to start working on the year 1992 and
to complete the series later. A new classification scheme was worked out which corresponds better to
the standard used in the world (BHA) and which aims at a gradual unification of bibliographical practice
of the involved institutions and at a possible creating of a single computer databasis. The bibliographical
work is based in the Council of Art Historical Libraries and four libraries share the work: beside the
Institute, also the Arts and Crafts Museum (K.Dostálová), National Gallery (V.Muchková) and the State
Institute for the Care of Monuments (M.Horynová). The research workers at the Insitute take part in the
work and here the final editing is done (J.Roháãek); the Bibliography will be published by the Institute.
In 1994, ca 2000 entries were incorporated.
Department of Documentation and Art Collections
Core of the archives of the Institute for History of Art is formed by the files of the Archeological
Institute of N.P.Kondakov (1925-52) together with posthumous papers of the prominent Byzantologue,
manuscripts of members of the Archeological Institute and a great amount of documentation. From the
Kondakov Insitute, also the rare collection of 84 icons came to our Institute which are now kept in the
National Gallery (part of them forms the core of the permanent exhibition of icons in the ·ternberg
Palais), collection of coins, etc. In 1995, an exhibition from all these materials will take place to
commemorate the foundation of the institute (see above). The files documenting the activity of the
Kondakov Institute were made availiable at this occasion. The presentation of the files of
M.V.·achmatov (J.Roháãek) is related to the project of inventorizing the posthumous papers left by the
Russian émigrés in Czechoslovakia after the World War I. On November 11, 1994, the representatives
of the Institute took part in an Orthodox memorial service in the church of the Most Holy Mother of
God in Ol‰any (Prague) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of death of N.P.Kondakov.
Posthumous papers of Zdenûk Wirth, Member of Academy, (1878-1961) are the most extensive part
of the collection, as he donated to the Institute for History of Art his collections of prints, photographs,
negatives, plans and process-blocks. Together, the Institute took over after Wirth's death also
posthumous papers of other art historians and institutions, collected by him during his life. Among
them are posthumous papers of A.Gnirs (1873-1933), R.Hlubinka (1878-1951), R.KuchyÀka (18691925), K.B.Mádl (1859-1932) and part of the files of the Archaeological Commission (1897-1936)
together with picture documentation and part of the manuscripts of the National Cultural Commission

(1946-1958). Posthumous papers of J.Cibulka (1886-1968), R.Chuman (1895-1957), K.Chytil (18571934), V.Kramáfi (1877-1960), V.M.Nebesk˘ (1899-1949), J.Peãírka (1891-1966), J.Polák (18861945), I.·perling (1930-1987) and F.Îákavec (1878-1937) were acquired by the archives either as
inheritance or they were bought.
In 1993, Mrs.R.Müllerová gave to the Institute the posthumous papers of Dr.J.Krãálová.
The collections were moved in 1994 from the depositories in Minská Str. to the newly acquired rooms
in Legerova 61-62 (belonging to the Academy), the collection is here for the first time housed in
relatively satisfying (dry) rooms. At the same time, a study room for researches was equipped in the
seat of the Institute in Husova Str. Other work during this year included inventorizing of the prints
collection (M.Halata), collecting documentation about research and organizing activity of the Institute
(M.Halata) and arranging the so-called new collection of plans (M.Halata, J.Lencová).
Before the end of the year, a new publishing series Fontes historiae artium was founded and plans to
publish the written sources concerning the history of art.
Photo Archives
Core of the photo archives collection of the Institute of Art History are negatives from photographs
taken by photographers working for the Institute. As of the end of 1994, the archives contained 49 000
items. Besides, two separate collections of negatives are kept in the archives, acquired as legacies of
prominent photographers of monuments of art - Josef Sudek (13.119 items, except negatives of creative
photographs, taken over by the Museum of Arts and Crafts), Josef Ehm (2. 923 items, except the
documentation of Prague, handed over to the Municipal Museum of Prague, and of applied art, handed
over to the Museum of Arts and Crafts) and Emila Medková (304 items).
Another collection is formed by slides of art-historical monuments from different areas, made by our
photographers, bought or obtained as a gift. This collection amounts to 12 680 items.
Separately arranged is also a collection of photographs, acquired by buying, as a gift, etc. This
collection contains as of the end of 1994, 58 387 items (e.g. photographs inherited from V.Kramáfi,
Z.Wirth, J.Krása and J.Krãálová).The most important part of the photo archives are photographs
adjusted on the so-called "scholarly files" of individual works of art, documenting mainly works of art
of Bohemian origin, divided into compartments of architecture, painting, sculpture, illuminated
manuscripts and applied art. Photographs of European art from collections in Czechoslovakia and a
fragmentary collection of world art (including e.g. rare and extensive collection of photographs of Italian
architecture, accumulated by V.Kramáfi) form another separate part of the whole collection.
The photo archives contain also index of iconography (ICONCLASS System, Haag) and microfiches
from the Marburg and Köln photo archives (MARBURGER INDEX, Marburg); the Institute acquired
them as a gift of the Kress Foundation in 1989.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES OF THE INSITUTE: PRESENT STATE AND
PERSPECTIVES
In connection with the reorganizing of our Institute, we decided to give one of our colleagues the
function, together with the uneasy task, to coordinate the gathering, processing, saving and distribution
of electronic data as well as to formulate the concept of our investment policy in the sphere of
information technologies (I.Muchka). The institute is nowadays still in the first period of introducing the
computer technologies, trying to finish the acquisition of the necessary computers and software.
Because of the character of our scolarly activities, we prefer portable computers (1994 - 5 Apple
PowerBooks, but only one from the new series 500 and 3 desktop computers - PC 486, Apple LC 475
and LC 630). Because of financial limits, we could not yet start using the generation of computers
Power PC, but it is possible to upgrade the hardware we acquired and install RISC-processors in them.
We regard positively that even though our financing sources are not unlimited, we were able to establish
a functioning system and not just a number of isolated, atomized working places, which is very often
the case when research is being financed from various grants.
After the reconstruction of the building in Husova street was completed, we managed to re-install the
LocalTalk net, which connects all the working places in our Institute, with the exception of five
computers of the PC category (where we are still considering the effectiveness of including them at al)l.
At the same time, we are preparing the establishment of an EtherTalk, Phase 2 net with greater capacity,
which is at present connecting only the newly acquired computers.

Annual Report 1994
Our basic plans for the coming period are, first of all, to acquire computers for those of us who have not
had access to them yet. What will be financially more difficult, is the establishment of an computerassisted publishing unit (the so called pre-press service), which will be, considering the prices for
printing nowadays, a very effective solution. The most important aim, however, is the progress in
creating and using the information data-bases (on-line as well as off-line). One of the conditions is to
learn to deal with the so called multi-media-technologies (digitalized pictures) as well as the computerassisted communications.
Considering these aims, along with certain special features of our scolarly field, sources of financing,
possibilities of upkeep and modernisation of the electronic technologies we have installed so far, our
Institute has formulated its politics in this field in a comprehensive information file called „The present
State and Outlook of the Information Technologies in the Institute of Art History“.

In January 1994 five grants provided by the the Academy agency were concluded, before the end of the
year 4 other grants were concluded and four continue into the next years. Newly started were five grants
from the Academy grant agency and two from the Government grant agency. Beside the grants funds,
the following projects recived a substantial financial support: the catalogue of the Collections of the
Kondakov Institute is being published with the support from Komerãní banka and Pro Helvetia
Ost/West, and the Documentation of Czech Art after 1945 is supported by Pro Helvetia Ost/West and
Schweizerischer-Tschechische Kunstfond in Zürich.

In 1993, the Institute had to quit the building in Ha‰talská Nr 6 which was restituted to the original
owner. It found new premises in the building belonging to the Academy of Sciences in Husova Nr 4.
The first part of moving took place in June 1993 to the offices on the second floor, while part of the
library and the archives were moved before the end of the year. Before the end of 1994, the moving out
of all the rooms in Ha‰talská Street, was finished and, at the same time, other depositories were moved.
As of December 31, 1994, the satisfying place was found for housing the director and secretariat, the
economic deaprtment, the working rooms of research workers, the photo archives and photo laboratory,
department of documentation and the library - the only part which still needs definite solution is the
library of the former Kondakov Institute in the rooms in Vojtû‰ská Street
