You are just holding a promotion material with the title “Cross-country skiing, cycling and
hiking – let's meet with the neighbours”, which is a result of a project with the same name,
carried out with the help of European Union funds. Among the partners who participated in
this project are the villages Nová Lhota and Vrbovce and two citizens associations – Slovácký
běžecký klub Kyjov, o. s. and Aktivní Horňácko, o. s. The main goal of this project was to
improve attractiveness of the tourist region of White Carpathians in the area of Javořina,
Nová Lhota and Vrbovce (SK) and build a cross-country skiing centre in this border region.
Thanks to the project a new parking place for visitors, information centre and necessary
background (public toilet) were built and machines for grooming cross-country trails were
purchased. The project laid the basis for the rise of a new tourist location sought after by
lovers of skiing trails, having a lot to offer not only to cross-country skiers in winter, but also
to hikers and cyclists in summer.

Jelenec lookout tower (former military tower) on the hill Jelenec (925 m a.s.l.)
is located approx. 3 km westwards from the village Květná. With entry at one's own
risk, the tower offers unique views of the whole White Carpathians.
Brestovec lookout tower Brestovec–Poľana can be found in the altitude of 530 m
above the settlement Brestovec belonging under the territory of the district town
Myjava.
Myjava (www.myjava.sk) is the centre of Kopanice region; it was founded in 1586.
In the year 1848 the first Slovak national council – the first national authority in the
history of the Slovak nation – held a meeting there (in Mrs. Kolény's house). Among
important persons in the history of Myjava, Mr. Daniel Krman, a priest and an Evangelic
bishop who played an important role in the building of the Evangelic baroque church,
must be mentioned. The church was later taken over by the Roman Catholic Church.
Myjava was also famous for bag manufacturing. The decline in handicrafts at the end of
the 19th century led to emigration of many citizens into the United States, Canada and
Argentina. Myjava is famous for its traditional festivals.
Stará Myjava
Kuželov (www.kuzelov.com)
the first written report about the village comes from
1406; the Church of the Holy Trinity comes from1768, built as a part of the proces of
re–catholicization of the local inhabitants. The most important historical landmark in the
village is the only wind mill of Holland type in Moravia, built on a hill above the village. The
mill was built in 1842 as a municipal mill. Since 1963 the mill is under the care of historical
monuments and it is open to public.
Mills in the valley of Velička
these are a group of mill courts (usually
vernacular buildings from the 19th century – the most interesting being the multi–storey
granaries) located on the banks of the stream Jamný potok between Javorník and
Vápenky.
Nová hora
(www.staramyjava.sk)
the village was founded in 1586 and was a
predecessor of Myjava. It had the oldest church in the whole region. In the beginning of
the 18th century, after moving the centre to Myjava from the fear of disruption of
administrative and clerical uniformity, the church and the rectory were pulled down.
Since then, culture typical for Kopanice evolved in Stará Myjava.
Stará Turá (www.staratura.sk) the first written record comes from the year
1392; the village started to develop after Matthias Corvinus appointed it a liege town,
which helped the development of trading and markets. Craftsmen from Stará Turá are
known for making of wooden dishes. People of Stará Turá are also known as the first
founders of "bryndza" sheep–cheese dairies in Slovakia. The town nearly burned down
so the only historical landmarks in the centre of the town are Evangelical and Roman
Catholic churches, the column of disgrace and the original common hall.
Vrbovce (www.vrbovce.sk) a village in the Myjava district; the first written record
of the village is in a deed of donation from 1394; in 1810 Vrbovce became a town and
got a new coat of arms. Among the most important personalities of Vrbovce are Karol
Adamiš (writer and evangelical priest), Ján Pravoslav Leška (writer and evangelical
priest) and Štefan Leška (philologist, translator, writer and journalist).
a natural reserve, located on the south–west slope of Nová hora
mountain (551 m a.s.l.) in the elevation between 385 and 510 m a.s.l.
Nová Lhota (www.novalhota.cz)
village with the highest elevation of all villages in
Hodonínsko region. It was probably founded by the Walachians in 1598. The dominant of
the village is a baroque Church of St. Matthew from the first half of the 18th century,
renovated in 1995. The land register of Nová Lhota includes also the former workers'
settlement Vápenky, which was founded in the end of the 18th century. It took its name
after mining of limestone for the needs of glass factory in Květná. Vápenky is currently
registered and protected as a village conservation zone.
Strání (www.strani.cz)
the first written record of the village's existence comes from
the early 14th century. The most important monuments in the village include the Church
of Raising of the Holy Cross (built in the years1909–1911 in the Pseudo-Gothic style),
statue of John the Baptist, a small château, chapel in Uhliska, parish gymnasium, farmer's
house No. 216 and “Třicátek“ – house No. 69 (until 1851 seat of customs office).
Šibenický vrch (707 m n. m.)
it is the highest peak of Brestovecká vrchovina
highland, there is a nice view on the Moravian side of the foothills of White Carpathians,
Dolnomoravský úval valley and Chřiby mountains from the mountain top.
Vápenky
Vrch Slobodných (686 m n. m.)
an elevation in the main summit of White
Carpathians above Stará Myjava, on its southern slope the little stream Kostolník
takes its rise.
Stará Myjava Dam

It is as deep as 11 metres and it stretches over 12 km .
CZECH REPUBLIC
natural monument spreading over an area of approx. 11 ha; oak and beech
wood (mainly common beech; sessile oak in a lesser extent). The woods are left without
any intervention.
Velká Javořina
with 970 m a. s. l. the highest summit of White Carpathians. The
summit is intersected with the border between the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It was
perceived as a symbol of Czechoslovak mutuality already in the 19th century and now it
becomes a meeting point of Czechs and Slovaks (Festival of brotherhood of Czechs and
Slovaks) (www.velkajavorina.com). Javořina is typical with the dominant of the 135–metre
radio station on the Slovak side.
Velká nad Veličkou (www.obecvelka.cz)
Dibrovův pomník

the main cultural monuments in the village include a
picturesque group of cottages in the part Kopánky, groups of timbered hay barns on the
eastern edge of the village, evangelical church from 1782 and a belfry from 1733. A wooded
hill in 638 metres above sea level above the village, Hradisko, takes its name after an
ancient settlement from the end of the 1st millennium A.D., from which only great mounds
remained.
memorial of a 2nd Wolrd War guerrilla leader, who fell there
in August 1944.

20 metres high and from its 378 metres above the sea level there is a great view of the
hilltops of White Carpathians and the Chřiby mountains.
Hrubá Vrbka (www.hrubavrbka.cz)
one of the oldest villages in the Horňácko region. Its
settlement dates back to the 4th century B. C. During the reign of Žerotín family the village
became an important centre of the Unity of the Brethren. There are several cultural
monuments such as the traditional agricultural buildings from the 18th and 19th century
(storage buildings in the centre of the village and long rows of barns made of stone and clay
bricks [so called "kotovice"]), a belfry from the 17th century and a church of Evangelical Church
of Czech Brethren from 1782.
the largest village of the Horňácko
region of Moravian Slovácko. The first record comes from 1228. Historical landmarks worth
mentioning include the Church of St. Mary Magdalene with choir from the first half of the
14th century fortified by a wall and a statue of St. John of Nepomuk from 1747. From local
natural attractions the National natural reserve Zahrady pod Hájem, natural reserve Hloží
and natural monument Nad Vápenkou are definitely worth mentioning. Since1957 each
summer the world–renowned folklore Horňácko festival is held in the village.
