Bál Festival - Baron Prášil
Bál Festival, který se každoročně koná v prostorách
Grandhotelu Pupp, je nejprestižnější událost karlovarské
plesové sezóny. Vždy připomíná některý z českých filmů.
Letos pořadatelé nechali ožít známého šprýmaře barona
Prášila. Film Baron Prášil vznikl v roce 1961 v režii slavného českého režiséra Karla Zemana. Toto dílo, inspirované
knihou R.E. Raspeho z roku 1785, je skutečnou pastvou
pro oči, uši a mysl. Stejné zážitky přinesli pořadatelé
29. ledna hostům plesu. Filmové fanoušky uvedla noc plná
fantazie a šprýmů do nového festivalového ročníku. Svátek
filmu, 46. mezinárodní filmový festival, se letos v Karlových
Varech koná od 1. do 9. července.

Vyhlášené bály v Grandhotelu Pupp navštěvují všechny generace. Grandhotel Pupp naplňuje touhu lidí po setkávání v noblesním prostředí Slavnostního sálu. Maturitní plesy jsou pro účastníky stejně nezapomenutelné jako letošní Ples orchidejí, Best

The famous balls in the Grandhotel Pupp are visited by all

Der Ball Festival, der alljährlich in den Räumlichkeiten vom
Grandhotel Pupp stattfindet, ist das angesehenste Ereignis
der Karlsbader Ballsaison. Immer erinnert er an einen der
tschechischen Filme. Dieses Jahr ließen die Veranstalter
den bekannten Spaßvogel Baron Münchhausen aufleben.
Der Film Münchhausen (Baron Prášil) entstand im Jahre
1961 unter der Regie des berühmten tschechischen
Regisseurs Karel Zeman. Dieses Werk, inspiriert von dem
Buch von R. E. Raspe aus dem Jahre 1785, ist ein wahrer
Schmaus für die Augen, Ohren und den Sinn. Gleiche
Erlebnisse brachten am 29. Januar die Veranstalter den
Ballgästen. Diese Nacht voller Fantasie und Witze führte die
Filmfans in den neuen Festivaljahrgang. Das Filmfest, das
46. Internationale Filmfestival, findet dieses Jahr in Karlsbad
vom 1. bis zum 9. Juli statt.
Ball Festival - Baron Münchhausen
The Ball Festival, which is held in the Grandhotel Pupp
every year, is the most prestigious event of the Karlovy Vary
ball season. It always remembers some of Czech films. This
year the organizers brought back to life the famous jester
Baron Münchhausen. The film Baron Münchhausen was
shot by the famous Czech director Karel Zeman in 1961. This
work, which is based on a book by R.E.Raspe from the year
1785, is a real feast for the eye, ear and mind. The visitors
to the ball on the 29th January had the same experiences.
The night full of imagination and fun introduced film fans
into a new festival year. The 46th International Film Festival
will be held in Karlovy Vary from the 1st to the 9th July.

Zertifizierung der Unterkunftseinrichtungen, die seit dem
Jahre 2010 in der Tschechischen Republik eingeführt wurden, ist das Grandhotel Pupp mit fünf Sternen als Einheit
bewertet. Das heißt, dass man im gesamten Grandhotel
Pupp Dienstleistungen des höchsten Niveaus bekommt.
Die offizielle Bewertung bestimmt die tschechische
Assoziation der Hotels und Restaurants (AHR ČR). Sie haben somit die Sicherheit, dass man sich um Sie genauso wie
in allen Fünfsternehotels in Europa kümmern wird. Das
Grandhotel Pupp ist für seine Gäste aus der ganzen Welt
eine Garantie für den höchsten Komfort und erstklassige
Dienstleistungen.
A Five-star Hotel
The Grandhotel Pupp as a whole was rated as a five-star
hotel on the basis of the unified European classification and
rating system which was introduced in the Czech Republic in
2010. It means that you will get the same standard of services in the whole Grandhotel Pupp. The official rating system
is set by the Czech Association of Hotels and Restaurants
(AHR ČR). So you can be sure that you will be looked after
as perfectly as other guests in all European five-star hotels
are. The Grandhotel Pupp is the guarantee of the greatest
comfort and first-rate services for all its guests from all over
the world.

Je známo, že ve fotogenickém prostředí Grandhotelu Pupp
bylo natočeno již mnoho filmů. Tentokrát však hotel hraje
hlavní roli. V rámci série Příběhy hotelů natáčela během loňského srpna bavorská televize dokument o Grandhotelu Pupp.
Autorkou a režisérkou projektu je Eva Severini, za kamerou stál
Erich Hammerl. V pětačtyřicetiminutovém snímku se setkáte
nejen s hotelem - jeho historií, současností a plány, ale hlavně
s lidmi, kteří v hotelu pracují, nebo jsou s hotelem jinak spjati.
Film bude vysílán 27.3. v 15.15 hod. v bavorské televizi.
Das Hotel als ein Filmstar
Es ist bekannt, dass in dem fotogenen Milieu vom Grandhotel
Pupp bereits viele Filme gedreht wurden. Diesmal spielt jedoch das Hotel die Hauptrolle. Im Rahmen der Serie
Hotelgeschichten drehte im vorjährigen August das Bayerische
Fernsehen ein Dokument über das Grandhotel Pupp. Die
Autorin und Regisseurin des Projekts ist Eva Severini und
hinter der Kamera stand Erich Hammerl. In einem fünfundvierzig Minuten langen Film lernt man nicht nur das Hotel
kennen – seine Geschichte, Gegenwart und die Pläne, sondern vor allem die Leute, die im Hotel arbeiten, oder mit dem
Hotel anders verbunden sind. Der Dokumentarfilm wird am
27. März um 15.15 im Bayerischen Fernsehen ausgestrahlt.
The Hotel as a Film Star
It is known that lots of films have already been shot in the
photogenic setting of the Grandhotel Pupp. However, this
time the hotel is playing the main part. The Bavarian TV
Company (Das Bayerische Fernsehen) shot a documentary
about the Grandhotel Pupp in August last year to make it
a part of its series Hotel Stories. The director of the project
is Eva Severini and the cameraman is Erich Hammerl. You
will get acquainted not only with the hotel – its history,
present and its plans for the future - but, first of all, with the
people who work in the hotel or are connected with it somehow. The 45-minute long film will be shown on 27th
March at 3.15 p.m. on TV Bayerisches Fernsehen.
Automobiloví veteráni
Před Grandhotelem Pupp se 28. ledna sjeli na závěr
11. ročníku závodu The Winter Trial 2011 majitelé automobilových veteránů. Závod odstartoval před hotelem Ritz v německém Wolfsburgu a jeho trasa vedla Německem, Českem,

(např. banky GE MONEY BANK, společnosti KIT Digital),
firemních večírků (např. společnosti AVE CZ) a několik lékařských kongresů, např. na téma Emoce v medicíně nebo
Akutní kardiologie.
Ein Kongressparadies
Polskem a Rakouskem. Účastníci exkluzivního závodu rádi
využili v závěru své cesty jedinečnou péči Grandhotelu Pupp.
Die Automobilveteranen
Vor das Grandhotel Pupp fuhren am 28. Januar zum
Abschluss des 11. Jahrgangs vom The Winter Trial Rennen
2011 die Besitzer der Automobilveteranen zusammen. Das
Rennen begann vor dem Hotel Ritz im deutschen Wolfsburg
und seine Strecke führte durch Deutschland, Tschechien,
Polen und Österreich. Die Teilnehmer des exklusiven
Rennens nutzten gern zum Abschluss ihrer Tour die einmalige Pflege vom Grandhotel Pupp.
Veteran Cars
The owners of veteran cars got together in front of the
Grandhotel Pupp at the end of the 11th year of the competition The Winter Trial 2011 on the 28th January. The
competition started outside the hotel Ritz in German
Wolfsburg and its route led through Germany, Bohemia,
Poland and Austria. The participants in the exclusive competition were happy to be able to make use of the unique
care of the Grandhotel Pupp at the end of their journey.
Für seine ideale Lage wird Karlsbad von den Kongress- und
Firmenveranstaltern aufgesucht. Die Stadt erfüllt alle wichtigen
Voraussetzungen – eine einfache Erreichbarkeit, die Sicherheit
und die Attraktivität des Weltkurortes. Vor allem das Grandhotel
Pupp ist dank den ausgezeichneten Dienstleistungen, der einmaligen Atmosphäre, der technischen Ausstattung der

Karlovy Vary is popular with the organizers of congresses
and firm events owing to its ideal location. The town meets

Jaký máte vztah ke Grandhotelu Pupp?
Již v dětství jsem z vyprávění rodičů pochopil, že Grandhotel
Pupp je jedním z klenotů města, vždy o něm mluvili s obdivem. Tak ho vnímám dodnes, navíc jsem měl možnost
proniknout dlouholetou spoluprací s hotelem do jeho slavné minulosti. Fascinují mě osudy rodiny Puppů. Mnohokrát
jsem také ochutnal mistrovské výtvory zdejších kuchařů.
Co byste vzkázal našim čtenářům?
Snažte se vyzkoušet vše, co Karlovy Vary nabízejí: lázeňské
služby, gastronomii i aktivní odpočinek v nádherném prostředí a výlety do okolí, například do Bečova či Lokte.
Karlovy Vary vám učarují, a pokud je vůbec dokážete ještě
opustit, budete se vždy rádi vracet. Přeji Vám, abyste si
odsud odváželi ty nejkrásnější zážitky.

Ing. Petr Kulhánek (1971) je devátým karlovarským primátorem od sametové revoluce v roce 1989. Absolvoval Vysokou
školu ekonomickou v Praze a studijní pobyty v USA a Austrálii.
Pracoval jako ředitel logistiky ve velké pražské firmě. V roce
2000 převzal v Karlových Varech vedení rodinného vydavatelství Promenáda, které založila v roce 1992 jeho matka. Bude
Vás zajímat, že se také podílel na tvorbě Pupp Journalu a velké
knihy Příběh Grandhotelu Pupp. Petr Kulhánek je ženatý, má
dva syny. Do funkce primátora byl zvolen 12. listopadu 2010.
Dnes odpovídá na otázky Pupp Journalu.
Jak se Vám žije v Karlových Varech?
Žiji zde téměř celý život. Vytvořil jsem si tím silné pouto,
jsem karlovarským patriotem. Je snadné se do tak malebného města zamilovat. Jedinečná kombinace přírodní scenerie
a architektury okouzluje jistě všechny obyvatele a návštěvníky. Karlovy Vary jsou historickým a současně moderním
městem se vším, co k životu člověk potřebuje.
Máte ve městě své oblíbené místo?
Často se vracím na místa, která skýtají nádherný pohled na
město, téměř z ptačí perspektivy. Mezi nejoblíbenější patří
Diana, vrch Tři kříže nebo Karlova vyhlídka. Nejkouzelnější
jsou návštěvy umocněné svěží jarní zelení nebo barvami
podzimního listí. Také rád chodím podél řeky Teplé, od

mit dem Oberbürgermeister der Stadt
Ing. Petr Kulhánek (1971) ist der neunte Karlsbader
Oberbürgermeister seit der samtenen Revolution im Jahre
1989. Er bestand die Ökonomische Hochschule in Prag und
die Studienaufenthalte in den USA und Australien. Er war als
Direktor der Logistik in einer großen Prager Firma angestellt.
Im Jahre 2000 übernahm er in Karlsbad die Leitung des
Familienverlages Promenáda, den im Jahre 1992 seine Mutter
gründete. Es wird Sie interessieren, dass er sich auch an der
Gestaltung des Pupp Journals und des großen Buches Die
Geschichte vom Grandhotel Pupp beteiligte. Petr Kulhánek ist
verheiratet, er hat zwei Söhne. Ins Amt des Oberbürgermeisters
wurde er am 12. November 2010 gewählt. Heute beantwortet
er die Fragen des Pupp Journals.
Wie lebt es sich Ihnen in Karlsbad?
Ich lebe hier fast das ganze Leben. Ich habe somit eine
feste Beziehung zu Karlsbad, ich bin ein Karlsbader Patriot.

Haben Sie in der Stadt Ihren Lieblingsort?
Oft kehre ich auf die Stellen zurück, woher eine wunderschöne Aussicht auf die Stadt, fast aus der Vogelperspektive,
ist. Zu den beliebtesten gehören Diana, der Hügel Drei
Kreuze oder die Karls-Aussicht. Am zauberhaftesten sind die
Besuche bekräftigt von dem frischen Frühlingsgrün oder von
den Farben der Herbstblätter. Auch spaziere ich gern entlang
des Flusses Tepl, von der Hauptpost bis zum Grandhotel
Pupp. Auch das Westend am Schlossberg mit den historischen Kurvillen hat seinen Zauber.
Welche Beziehung haben Sie zum Grandhotel Pupp?
Bereits in der Kindheit begriff ich aus den Erzählungen der
Eltern, dass das Grandhotel Pupp einer der Juwelen der
Stadt ist, immer sprachen Sie darüber mit Bewunderung. So
sehe ich es bis heute, hinzu hatte ich die Möglichkeit anhand langjähriger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Hotel seine
berühmte Vergangenheit kennenzulernen. Mich faszinieren
die Schicksale der Familie Pupp. Mehrmals kostete ich auch
die Meisterwerke der hiesigen Köche.
Was würden Sie unseren Lesern mitteilen?
Bemühen Sie sich alles auszuprobieren, was Karlsbad bietet: die Kurdienstleistungen, die Gastronomie sowie die
aktive Erholung in einer wunderschönen Umgebung,
Ausflüge in die Umgebung, zum Beispiel nach Bečov
(Petschau) oder Loket (Elbogen). Karlsbad bezaubert Sie,
und falls Sie es überhaupt noch verlassen können, kehren
Sie immer wieder gern zurück. Ich wünsche Ihnen, dass Sie

An Interview with the Mayor of the Town
Ing. Petr Kulhánek (1971) has been the ninth mayor of
Karlovy Vary since Velvet Revolution in the year 1989. He
graduated from the School of Economics in Prague and
studied in the U.S.A. and Australia. He worked as a manager of logistics for a big Prague firm. In 2000 he took over
the family business – Promenáda Publishing – which had
been established by his mother in 1992. It could be interesting for you to know that he also took part in the creation
of the Pupp Journal and the big book The Story of the
Grandhotel Pupp. He is married and has two sons. Petr
Kulhánek was elected the ninth mayor of Karlovy Vary on
the 12th November 2010. Today he is answering the questions of the Pupp Journal.

How do you like living in Karlovy Vary?
I have been living here for almost all my life. I have created
a strong bond to this town and I am a patriot of Karlovy
Vary. It is easy to fall in love with such a picturesque town.
The unique combination of scenery and architecture must
fascinate all inhabitants and visitors. Karlovy Vary is both
a historic and a modern town with all people need.
Do you have your favourite place in the town?
I often come back to places which provide wonderful views
of the town, views almost from the air. The Diana Outlook
Tower, Three Crosses Hill or the Charles Viewing Point are
among my favourites. The walks which are intensified by
the fresh green colour in spring or by the colours of autumn
leaves are the most beautiful. I also like walking along the
Teplá River, from the Main Post Office as far as the
Grandhotel Pupp. The Westend on the Castle Hill with its
historic spa villas has its charm as well.
What is your relation to the Grandhotel Pupp?
I understood as a child already from what my parents were
saying about it that the Grandhotel Pupp was one of the
jewels of the town – they always mentioned it with admiration. And that is how I have seen it until these days, apart
from it, I could get acquainted with its famous history thanks
to my long-term cooperation with the hotel. I am fascinated
by the lives of the members of the Pupp family. I have also
tasted delicacies prepared by hotel cooks many times.
What message would you like to send to our readers?
Try everything that Karlovy Vary can offer: spa services,
gastronomy and active relaxation in the beautiful surroundings, trips to the neighbourhood, e.g. to Bečov or Loket.
Karlovy Vary will captivate you and if you are able to leave
it at all, you will always come back. I wish you the most
beautiful experiences which you will take home with you.

Das Aprilmenü benötigt eine kurze theoretische Einleitung dazu, damit
man begreift, warum es manchmal nötig ist, den Geschmack von
Cognac und Schokolade zu verbinden. Henessy V.S.O.P. mischt man
aus 60 eaux-de-vie aus dem gesamten Cognac Gebiet. Das Ergebnis ist
ein Getränk von Bernsteinfarbe, von weichem Obst- und Holzduft,
von feinem samtenem Alkohol, Holz-, Obstgeschmack, bei dem sich
mit der Zeit die Töne von Holz, Vanille und Lakritz zeigen. Die
Schokolade Valrhona kommt auch aus Frankreich, aus dem Weingebiet
in der Umgebung von Lyon. Sie gehört, genauso wie Hennessy bei
den Cognacs, zu den vornehm­sten Schokoladen der Welt. Die Feinheit
bis Seidigkeit beider Geschmäcke bildet ein harmonisches Paar, eben
in diesem einzigartig zusammengestellten Menü genutzt.

The April menu requires a brief theoretical introduction so that
you may understand why it is sometimes necessary to combine
tastes of cognac and chocolate. Henessy V.S.O.P. is mixed from
60 eaux-de-vie from the whole region of Cognac. The result is an
amber beverage with soft fruit smell mixed with the smell of
wood which tastes after wood and fruit. As it grows old, you can
taste vanilla and liquorice in it. Valrhona chocolate comes from
France too, from a wine-growing region in the neighbourhood of
Lyon. It ranks, as well as Hennessy in the cognac family, among
the most select sorts of chocolate in the world. The delicacy, almost silkiness of both tastes creates a harmonious combination
which can be found in this especially composed menu.

V mnoha zemích je sklizeň chřestu slavností. Tuto gurmánskou zeleninu lze připravit na mnoho způsobů. Je velmi lahodná i zdravá. Jako zelenina i léčivá rostlina byl chřest znám
již ve starém Egyptě čtyři tisíce let před naším letopočtem svědčí o tom fresky, na nichž je zobrazen. Pochutnávali si na
něm antičtí Řekové a zvláště římští gurmáni, byl oblíbenou
pochoutkou císaře Augusta. Ve středověku byl chřest převezen i do střední Evropy a od poloviny 16. století byl pěstován
v Itálii, Španělsku a speciálně pro stůl francouzského krále
Ludvíka XIV. přímo ve Versailles. Český chřest se pěstoval až
od 19. století a vynikal raností a jemností, díky vybělováni
pod zvony z pálené hlíny. Naše menu je nejen velmi lahodné,
ale i šetrné k Vaší linii a prospěšné Vaší kondici.

Gourmetgemüse kann man auf verschiedene Art und Weise
vorbereiten. Es ist sehr köstlich und gesund. Als Gemüse
sowie Heilpflanze wurde er bereits im alten Ägypten viertausend Jahre vor Christus bekannt - darüber zeugen Fresken,
auf denen er dargestellt wird. Es ließen sich ihn die antiken
Griechen schmecken und vor allem die Römer Gourmets, er
war ein beliebter Leckerbissen vom Kaiser Augustus. Im
Mittelalter wurde der Spargel auch nach Mitteleuropa gebracht und ab der Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts wurde er in
Italien, Spanien und speziell für die Tafel des französischen
Königs Ludwig XIV. direkt in Versailles angebaut. Den tschechischen Spargel baute man erst seit dem 19. Jahrhundert an

The harvest of asparagus is a feast in lots of countries. This
gourmet vegetable can be cooked in many ways. It is very
delicious and healthy. Being a medical herb, it was known
in ancient Egypt as early as four thousand years B.C. frescoes where it is depicted prove it. Ancient Greeks and
especially Roman gourmets relished it and it was Emperor
Augustus’s favourite delicacy as well. Asparagus was brought to central Europe in the Middle Ages and has been
grown in Italy, Spain and directly in Versailles for the
French king Louis XIV since the mid-16th century. Czech
asparagus started being grown in the mid-19th century and
was known for its earliness and smoothness which was the
result of its whitening under special bells from burnt clay.

Rozumíte skotské?
Skotská whisky (Scotch whisky) musí být vyrobena ve
Skotsku z vody a sladového ječmene bez jakýchkoliv
dalších příměsí a musí zrát nejméně tři roky
v dubových sudech o maximálním obsahu 700 litrů.
Poprvé byl nápoj zákonem definován v r. 1909, kdy
nejen sladový, ale i obilný a míchané produkty byly
uznány za whiskey (během pár let se název změnil
na whisky). Byl tak uzákoněn opačný názor oproti
soudnímu sporu z r. 1905, kdy bylo rozhodnuto, že
obilná není pravá whiskey, a míchané jsou vlastně
pančované. Dnešní podmínky výroby whisky určuje
zákon z r. 1988 The Scotch Whisky Act.
Skotská whisky se dělí na několik základních typů.
Ústředním produktem je single malt whisky, což je čistá
sladová whisky z jedné palírny, vyrobená výhradně
z naklíčeného sladového ječmene. Specialitou je
whisky z jednoho sudu - single cask či single barrel,
a pokud se při plnění do lahví neředí, hovoříme
o sudové síle whisky - cask strength.
Druhým základním produktem je grain whisky česky
obilná, která je pálena z různých druhů vesměs
nesladovaného obilí, především z pšenice, a jen
s malou příměsí sladovaného ječmene. Musí také
zrát minimálně tři roky v sudech. Téměř výhradně se
používá k výrobě míchaných whisky, ale výjimečně
se na trhu objevuje z některých palíren i čistá, pod
názvem single grain whisky.
Důležitým pojmem je blended whisky. Ta je běžně
míchána z 20 až 40 druhů sladové a obilné. Např.
Johnnie Walker je standardně míchán ze 42 druhů,
u některých značek, spíše pro jistou výjimečnost, je
udáváno až 100 různých malt whisky. Všeobecně
platí: čím kvalitnější míchaná whisky, tím má větší
podíl sladových (malt) whisky s delší dobou zrání.
Označení stáří, uvedené na etiketách, je dobou zrání
nejmladší použité whisky ve směsi.
Dalším pojmem je vatted malt whisky (dnes blended
malt). To je směs výhradně sladových whisky
z několika palíren. Některé z těchto whisky se

skrývají i pod názvem pure malt. Jejich produkce je
poměrně omezená, na tuzemském trhu se příliš často
nevyskytují.
Zvláštním historickým pojmem je moonshine whisky,
která se vyráběla tajně po nocích „za měsíčního svitu“
až do roku 1824, kdy byl schválen The Excise Act,
který povoloval pálení whisky v destilačních zařízeních
s obsahem větším než 40 galonů (180 litrů) za roční
poplatek 10 liber.
V r. 2007 byly schváleny nové předpisy, které definují
pět různých kategorií skotské whisky: single malt,
single grain, blended scotch (míchaná malt
a grain), blended malt (dosud vatted
malt či pure malt) a blended grain
(dosud vatted grain).

änderte sich der Name auf whisky). Es wurde eine
Gegenauffassung gegenüber dem Prozess aus dem
Jahre 1905 gesetzlich festgelegt. Dieser entschied, dass
der Getreide- nicht der wahre Whiskey ist, und die
Mischwiskeys eigentlich gepanscht sind. Die heutigen
Bedingungen der Whiskyherstellung bestimmt das
Gesetz aus dem Jahre 1988 The Scotch Whisky Act.
Den schottischen Whisky teilt man in einige
Grundtypen. Das Hauptprodukt ist single malt whisky,
was eine rein Malzwhisky aus einer Brennerei ist,
hergestellt ausschließlich aus gekeimter Malzgerste.
Eine Spezialität ist ein Whisky aus einem Fass - single
cask oder single barrel, und falls man ihn während
der Abfüllung nicht verdünnt, spricht man über eine
Fassstärke vom Whisky - cask strength.
Das zweite Grundprodukt ist grain whisky deutsch
Getreidewhisky, der aus verschiedenen Sorten
durchwegs Nicht-Malz Getreide gebrannt wird, vor
allem aus Weizen und nur mit einem geringen Zusatz
von Malzgerste. Er muss auch mindestens drei Jahre in
Fässern reifen. Fast ausschließlich verwendet man ihn
zur Herstellung von Mischwhisky, aber ausnahmsweise
erscheint am Markt aus manchen Brennereien auch ein
reiner, unter dem Namen single grain whisky.
Ein wichtiger Begriff ist blended whisky. Dieser
wird üblich aus 20 bis 40 Sorten des Malz- und
Getreidewhiskys gemischt. Z. B. Johnnie Walker wird
standardmäßig aus 42 Sorten gemischt, bei manchen
Marken, eher für eine gewisse Ausnahmestellung,
werden bis zu 100 verschiedenen malt whisky
angegeben. Allgemein gilt: je qualitätsvoller der
Mischwhisky ist, desto größer ist der Anteil der
Malzwhiskys (malt) mit einer längeren Reifezeit. Die
Altersangabe, angegeben auf den Etiketten, ist die
Reifezeit des jüngsten verwendeten Whiskys in der
Mischung.
Ein weiterer Begriff ist vatted malt whisky
(heute blended malt). Das ist eine Mischung aus
ausschließlich Malzwhiskys aus einigen Brennereien.
Manche von diesen Whiskys verbergen sich auch
unter dem Namen pure malt. Ihre Produktion ist
ziemlich begrenzt, am hiesigen Markt erscheint er

nicht sehr oft.
Ein seltsamer historischer Begriff ist moonshine
whisky, der heimlich in der Nacht „bei Mondschein“
bis ins Jahr 1824 hergestellt wurde, als The Excise
Act beschlossen wurde, der das Brennen von Whisky
in Destillieranlagen mit einem Umfang größer als
40 Gallonen (180 Liter) für eine Jahresgebühr von
10 Pfund genehmigte.
Im Jahre 2007 wurden neue Vorschriften beschlossen,

Do You Understand Scotch Whisky?
Scotch whisky has to be made in Scotland from water
and malted barley without any other ingredients and
has to mature in oak casks whose volume is 700 litres
maximally for at least three years. The law defined it
for the first time in 1909 when not only malt but also
grain and blended products were recognized as whiskey
(the name was changed to whisky in a few years).
An opposite opinion was legalized in comparison to
a lawsuit from 1905 in which it had been decided that
grain whisky was not genuine whiskey and blended
whisky was actually adulterated. Today’s conditions
of the production of whisky are defined by the law
dating from 1988, The Scotch Whisky Act.
Scotch whisky can be divided into several basic types.
The main product is single malt whisky which is pure
malt whisky from one distillery, made entirely from
germinated malted barley. A speciality is whisky from
a single cask – single cask or single barrel whisky, and
if it is not diluted while bottling, we speak about the
cask strength of whisky.
Another basic product is grain whisky which is made
from several sorts of mainly unmalted grain, first
of all from wheat and with only a small amount of
malted barley. It also has to mature in casks for at
least three years. It is almost exclusively used for
the production of blended whiskies but pure whisky
from some distilleries, called single grain whisky, can
exceptionally be found on the market too.
An important term is blended whisky. It is usually
blended from 20 to 40 sorts of malt and grain whisky.
E.g. Johnnie Walker is traditionally made from 42 sorts
and some brands, wanting to get a touch of exclusiveness,
give up to a hundred different malted whiskies. Generally
it can be said: the better quality of blended whisky, the
bigger amount of malt whiskies with a longer maturing
time. The age given on labels is the maturing time of the
youngest of whiskies in the blend.
Another term is vatted malt whisky (today blended malt).
It is a blend of exclusively malt whiskies from several

distilleries. Some of these whiskies are hidden under the
name pure malt. Their production is relatively limited and
they do not occur on the Czech market very often.
A special historical term is moonshine whisky – i.e.
whisky which used to be made ”by moonshine“–
secretly and at night up to 1824 when The Exercise
Act was passed. The Act allowed whisky distilling in
pot stills with a capacity exceeding 40 gallons (180
litres) for an annual fee of 10 pounds.
New regulations were approved in 2007. They define
five different categories of Scotch whisky: single malt,
single grain, blended scotch (blended malt and grain),
blended malt (up to this time vatted malt or pure malt)
and blended grain (up to this time vatted grain).

Pohostinnosti Grandhotelu Pupp využil v roce 2004
americký herec Harvey Keitel (nar. 1939), když přijel do
Karlových Varů na pozvání Mezinárodního filmového
festivalu. Při zahájení filmové přehlídky převzal Cenu za
mimořádný umělecký přínos světovému filmu. Jeho potěšení bylo dvojnásobné: zavzpomínal totiž na svou éru
v jednom z newyorských divadel, kde uváděli Havlovu
hru a současně podepisovali petici za jeho propuštění
z vězení. „Nikdy mě nenapadlo, že dramatik Havel pomůže svrhnout vládu v této zemi, že se v ní sám ocitnu
a budu tu oceněn,“ uvedl. Keitela přivedl k filmu režisér
Martin Scorsese, když ho obsadil do svého studentského
snímku Kdo to klepe na moje dveře? (1968), pak přišla
i další spolupráce. V dramatu z mafiánského prostředí
Špinavé ruce (1973) ztělesnil Keitel chuligána, v úspěšném filmu Taxikář (1976) neurotického pasáka. Keitel
vystupoval v řadě násilnických scén, současně však vytvořil i mnoho citlivých postav, převážně milujících otců
a manželů. Strhující výkon podal v melodramatu Piano
(1993). Zatím nejvyššího ocenění dosáhl v roce 1991
nominací na Oscara a na Zlatý glóbus za vedlejší roli
v romantické gangsterce Bugsy. V Karlových Varech byl
při zahájení festivalu v roce 2004 promítnut na počest
velkého herce kriminální thriller City of Industry (1997),
v němž hrál stárnoucího vězně. Harvey Keitel účinkuje
také v nové sérii filmových znělek, které uvádějí jednotlivé projekce Mezinárodního filmového festivalu
v Karlových Varech.

Die Gastfreundlichkeit vom Grandhotel Pupp nutzte im
Jahre 2004 der amerikanische Schauspieler Harvey Keitel
(geb. 1939), als er nach Karlsbad auf Einladung des
Internationalen Filmfestivals kam. Während der Eröffnung
der Filmschau übernahm er den Preis für den außergewöhnlichen künstlerischen Beitrag der Welt­
kinematografie. Seine Freude war zweifach: er erinnerte
sich nämlich an seine Ära in einem der New Yorker
Theater, wo man Havels Spiel vorführte und gleichzeitig
eine Bittschrift für seine Entlassung aus dem Gefängnis
unterschrieb. „Nie fiel mir ein, dass der Dramatiker Havel
verhilft, die Regierung in diesem Land zu stürzen, dass ich
hierher selbst gerate, und werde hier gewürdigt,“ sagte er.
Keitel brachte zum Film der Regisseur Martin Scorsese, als
er ihn in seinen Studentenfilm Who’s That Knocking at
My Door? (1968) besetzte. Zwischen beiden entstand eine
Freundschaft, mit ihr kam auch die weitere Zusammenarbeit.
In dem Drama aus dem Mafiamilieu Mean Streets (1973)
spielte Keitel einen Schlurf, in dem erfolgreichen Film Taxi
Driver (1976) einen neurotischen Zuhälter. Keitel trat in
einer Reihe von Gewaltszenen auf, gleichzeitig spielte er
auch viele gefühlsvolle Rollen, vorwiegend liebende Väter
und Ehemänner. Eine hinreißende Leistung bot er in dem
lyrischen Melodrama Piano (1993). Bisher die größte
Würdigung bekam er im Jahre 1991 mit der Nominierung
auf den Oscar und den Goldenen Globus für die

The American actor Harvey Keitel (1939) enjoyed the hospitality of the Grandhotel Pupp in the year 2004 after he
had come to Karlovy Vary at the invitation of the
International Film Festival. He was awarded the Prize for
Outstanding Contribution to World Film during the opening
ceremony. It was a double pleasure for him: he remembered
the time when he was playing in one of New York theatres
where they were showing a play by Havel and, at the same
time, signing a petition for his release from prison.”It had
never crossed my mind before that the playwright Havel
would help to topple the government in that country and
that I would find myself there one day and that I would even
get an award”, he said. It was the director Martin Scorsese
that introduced Keitel to film when he had offered him
a part in his student’s film Who’s That Knocking at My
Door? (1968). They developed friendship which resulted in
further cooperation. Keitel played the part of a hooligan in
the drama about the Mafia Mean Street (1973) and a neurotic pimp in the successful film Taxi Driver (1976). Keitel
appeared in a number of violent scenes; however, he also
created lots of sensitive characters, mostly those of loving
fathers and husbands. He delivered an especially brilliant
performance in the lyrical melodrama The Piano (1993).
His highest appreciation so far has been his nomination for
an Oscar and the Golden Globe in 1991 for the supporting

part he played in the film about gangsters Bugsy. The criminal thriller City of Industry (1997) where he plays an aging
prisoner was shown in honour of this excellent actor at the
beginning of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in 2004.

Sadová kolonáda
Korzování po Sadové kolonádě bude pro vás návratem
do romantického 19. století. Světlá litinová konstrukce
kolonády je pro svou lehkost a ornamentální výzdobu
obdivována návštěvníky z celého světa. Kdysi tu z míst,
kudy vede dnešní Sadová ulice, protékal potok a vléval
se do říčky Teplé. Pak zde bývala soukromá zahrada,
posléze vykoupená městem jako parcela pro výstavbu
nového divadla. Nakonec však byl pozemek využit pro
zřízení městského parku v anglickém stylu.
Dnešní Sadová kolonáda je pouze fragmentem dřívější
stavby. Původně byla vystavěna ve tvaru L a její druhé
křídlo vedlo až k velkému zahradnímu pavilonu s verandami a orchestřištěm uprostřed parku. Spojovala tak
Sadový pramen s dnes již neexistující letní restaurací, jejíž
pavilon byl velkolepou ozdobou dnešních Dvořákových
sadů. Byl postaven podle návrhů vídeňských architektů
Ferdinanda Fellnera a Hermanna Helmera v letech 18801881. Objektu se říkalo Stadtpark-Restaurant nebo také
Blanenský pavilon, neboť na konstrukci stavby byly použity litinové prvky, které dodaly železárny v Blansku.

Slavnostní otevření letní restaurace, která se stala významným centrem společenského a kulturního života, se
konalo 5. července 1881. V umělecky vyzdobených
rozlehlých prostorách byly pořádány koncerty, výstavy
a taneční zábavy.
V r. 1966 došlo k neuvážené demolici zchátralého
Blanenského pavilonu a zachovala se jen část litinové
kolonády, po které se dnes můžete procházet od
Sadového pramene k Hadímu, který zde vytéká přímo
z hadí tlamy teprve roku od 2001. Sadová kolonáda je
typickým představitelem architektury historismu a vzpomínkou na slavné vídeňské architekty, stejně jako
Grandhotel Pupp. Krytá promenáda je lemovaná litinovým zábradlím a zdobená hvězdicovými i rostlinnými
motivy. Začátkem tisíciletí byla kompletně zrekonstruována. Chybějící či porušené části byly znovu odlity ve slévárně Blansko, v té slévárně, kde se v předminulém století
odlévaly původní prvky. Sadová kolonáda stejně jako před
130 lety chrání lázeňské hosty před deštěm i sluncem
a svou líbezností vytváří tu pravou lázeňskou atmosféru.

Parkkolonnade
Eine Promenade auf der Parkkolonnade bringt Sie ins
romantische 19. Jahrhundert zurück. Die helle gusseiserne Konstruktion der Kolonnade wird für ihre Leichtigkeit
und die ornamentalen Verzierungen von den Besuchern
aus der ganzen Welt bewundert. Einst floss hier von
oben, wo heute die Sadová Straße führt, ein Bach, der
in den Fluss Tepl mündete. Dann war hier ein
Privatgarten, später von der Stadt als Parzelle für den
Aufbau von einem neuen Theater erkauft. Zum Schluss
wurde am Grundstück aber ein Stadtpark im englischen
Stil errichtet. Die heutige Kolonnade ist nur ein Fragment
des früheren Gebäudes. Ursprünglich wurde sie in einer
L-Form aufgebaut und sein zweiter Flügel führte zu einem großen Gartenpavillon mit Veranden und einer
Orchesterbühne in der Parkmitte. Sie verband so die
Parkquelle mit dem bereits nicht mehr bestehenden
Sommerrestaurant, dessen Pavillon ein großartiges Juwel
des heutigen Dvořák Parks war. Er wurde nach den
Vorschlägen der Wiener Architekten Ferdinand Fellner
und Hermann Helmer in den Jahren 1880-1881 erbaut.

Blanzer Pavillon, denn auf den Bau wurden
Gusseisensegmente verwendet, die die Eisenwerke in
Blanz (Blansko) lieferten. Die feierliche Eröffnung des
Sommerrestaurants, das zu einem bedeutenden Zentrum
des gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Lebens wurde,
fand am 5. Juli 1881 statt. In den künstlerisch geschmückten umfangreichen Räumlichkeiten wurden Konzerte,
Ausstellungen und Tanzvergnügen veranstaltet.
Im Jahre 1966 kam es zu einem unüberlegten Abriss des
verwahrlosten Blanzer Pavillons und es blieb nur ein
Teil der Gusseisenkolonnade erhalten, auf der man
heute von der Park- zu der Schlangenquelle spazieren
kann, die hier direkt aus einem Schlangenmaul erst seit
dem Jahre 2001 fließt. Die Parkkolonnade vertritt die
Architektur des Historismus und sie ist eine Erinnerung
an die berühmten Wiener Architekten, genauso wie das
Grandhotel Pupp. Die überdachte Promenade ist mit
einem gusseisernen Geländer umrahmt und mit Sternensowie Pflanzenmotiven verziert. Am Anfang des
Jahrtausends wurde sie komplett widerhergestellt. Die
fehlenden oder beschädigten Teile wurden wieder in der
Eisengießerei Blansko hergestellt, in derselben, wo in
dem 19. Jahrhundert die ursprünglichen Teile abgegos

sen wurden. Die Parkkolonnade schützt genauso wie
vor 130 Jahren die Kurgäste vor dem Regen sowie der
Sonne und mit ihrer Lieblichkeit schafft sie die richtige
Kuratmosphäre.

Walking along the Park Colonnade will be a return to
the romantic 19th century for you. The cast-iron structure
of the colonnade is admired by the visitors from the
whole world owing to its lightness and ornamentation.
Once there was a brook here which started where
Sadová Street can be found today. It flowed into the
Teplá River. Then a private garden used to be here
which was later bought by the town authorities as a site
suitable for the construction of a new theatre. Finally,
a municipal park in the English style was established on
the piece of land. Today’s Park Colonnade is just a part
of the former structure.
The colonnade was originally L-shaped and its second
wing reached as far as a big garden pavilion with verandas
and an orchestra pit in the middle of the park. It connected the Park Spring with a restaurant which does not exist
any more and whose pavilion was a magnificent decora­
tion of today’s Dvořák Park. It was built from the plans of
the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann
Hellner between 1880 and 1881. The structure used to be
called Stadtpark-Restaurant or Blanenský Pavilion because
the iron-cast pars of the colonnade were delivered by the
ironworks in Blansko. The restaurant became an important centre of social and cultural life and the opening ceremony took on the 5th July 1881. Concerts, exhibitions
and balls were organized in its beautifully decorated and
spacious rooms. Unfortunately, the dilapidated Blanenský
Pavilion was recklessly pulled down in 1966 and only
a part of the iron-cast colonnade was preserved. Today
you can walk along it from the Park Spring to the Snake
Spring, whose water has been flowing directly from a snake’s mouth only since 2001. The Park Colonnade is a typical representative of the architecture of historism and it
is a remembrance of the famous Viennese architects, as
well as the Grandhotel Pupp is. The roofed promenade is
lined with an iron-cast railing and decorated with star-shaped motifs and motifs of plants. It was completely renovated at the beginning of the millennium. The missing or
damaged parts were made in the foundry in Blansko
again, in the ironworks where the original parts had been
cast in the 19th century. The Park Colonnade protects the
spa visitors from rain and sunshine as it did 130 years ago
and its beauty helps to create the right spa atmosphere.

Zveme vás na výpravu k jednomu ze symbolů Karlových
Varů - k soše kamzíka. Přímo za Grandhotelem Pupp,
v Mariánské uličce, je stanice lanovky. Vyvezeme se k rozhledně Diana, z níž nás čeká úchvatný výhled na Karlovy
Vary. Na rozhlednu z roku 1914 vede 150 schodů, ale výtah
nám výstup usnadní. Pod věží se můžeme občerstvit v lesní
restauraci Diana. Z výšiny Přátelství, jak se kopci s rozhlednou říká, nás čeká už jen klesání. Nejprve se spustíme pěšinou k zastávce lanovky Jelení skok. Po žlutě značené
cestě dojdeme k restauraci Jelení skok. Nedaleko restaurace se nachází vyhlídka Petra Velikého. Až sem podle pověsti vyjel od Vřídla Petr Veliký na neosedlaném koni. Ze
dvou dalších skalních vyhlídek s altánky je krásný výhled
na lázně. Nyní sejdeme prudkou stezkou ke známé soše
kamzíka, která stojí na skalní jehle nazvané Jelení
skok. Podle pověsti z těchto skalisek skočil štvaný jelen do
horkých pramenů v údolí. Původně zinkovou sošku nechal
po roce 1851 instalovat na skalní masiv místo jelena svérázný baron Lützov. Zpět do Grandhotelu Pupp se dostaneme
stezkou přes ulice Petrova výšina a Luční vrch na Starou
louku. Po promenádě pohodlně dojdeme do hotelu. Byli
jste na Jelením skoku, ale jelena jste neviděli? K jeho soše
u Parkhotelu Rich­mond se podíváme příště.
Pro sportovně založené jedince:
Máte-li chuť si vyšlápnout na kopec pěšky, podél lanovky
vedou serpentiny vzhůru. Výškový rozdíl je 167 metrů.

Dreimal der Hirschsprung
Wir laden Sie auf einen Ausflug zu einem der Symbole von
Karlsbad – zur Gämsestatue ein. Direkt hinter dem Grand­
hotel Pupp, in der Mariánská Straße, ist die Seilbahnstation.
Man fährt hinauf zum Aussichtsturm Diana, woher uns eine
überwältigende Aussicht auf Karlsbad erwartet. Auf den
Aussichtsturm aus dem Jahre 1914 führen 150 Treppen,
aber ein Aufzug erleichtert uns den Aufstieg. Unter dem
Turm kann man sich im Waldrestaurant Diana erfrischen.
Von der Freundschaftshöhe, wie man den Hügel mit dem
Aussichtsturm nennt, geht man nur bergab. Zuerst geht man
einen Weg zur Seilbahnstation Hirschsprung herunter.
Auf einem gelb markierten Weg kommt man zum
Restaurant Hirschsprung. Nicht weit befindet sich die
Peter des Großen Aussicht. Bis hierher ritt laut Legende
vom Sprudel Peter der Große auf einem ungesattelten
Pferd. Von zwei weiteren Felsaussichten mit Altanen gibt es
einen schönen Ausblick auf den Kurort. Nun steigt man einen steilen Weg zur bekannten Gänsestatue herunter, die
auf einer Felsnadel, auch Hirschsprung genannt,
steht. Laut Legende sprang von diesen Felsen der gejagte
Hirsch in die heißen Quellen im Tal. Die ursprüngliche
Zinkstatue brachte nach dem Jahre 1851 auf das Felsenmassiv
anstatt eines Hirsches der eigenartige Baron Lützow an.
Zurück ins Grandhotel Pupp kommt man auf einem Weg
über die Straßen Petrova výšina und Luční vrch auf die Alte
Wiese. Auf der Promenade kommt man bequem bis zum

Three Times the Deer’s Jump
We would like to invite you to a trip to one of the symbols
of Karlovy Vary – the chamois statue. There is a funicular
station directly behind the Grandhotel Pupp in a lane called
Mariánská. We will take you up to the Diana Outlook
Tower from which you will get a wonderful view of Karlovy
Vary. There are 150 steps leading to the outlook tower
which dates from 1914 but the lift will make the climb easier. You can refresh yourself in a restaurant under the tower.
Then only a descent from the Height of Friendship, as the
hill with the outlook tower is called today, will wait for you.
First you will go down the path running to the Deer’s

Jump funicular station. A road with yellow marks will
take you to the restaurant Deer’s Jump. The Peter the
Great Viewing Point can be found not far from here. A legend has it that Peter the Great rode an unsaddled horse
from the Sprudel as far as this place. Further two viewing
points with summerhouses standing on pieces of rock will
offer fascinating views of the spa town. Now you will go
down a steep path to the famous chamois statue which
stands on a rock needle also called the Deer’s Jump.
According to a legend a chased deer jumped into hot
springs from here. It was the eccentric Baron Lützow that
had the originally zinc statue put up on a rock massive after
1851. Another path will take you along the streets Petrova
výšina and Luční vrch back to Stará louka Street and the
Grandhotel Pupp. The walk along the promenade as far as
the hotel is comfortable. That you were at the Deer’s Jump
but could not see any deer? O.K., next time we will go to
see a deer statue by the Parkhotel Richmond.
For sportsmen:
If you feel like climbing the hill, there is a twisting path
running along the cable railway. The difference in the
­height is 167 metres. If you like Nordic walking or if you
want to try it, you can borrow poles in the Guest Service
where you can also get an instructor if you want.

Karlsbad kümmert sich um seine Gäste und Patienten das

ist der allegorische Umzug am Samstag. Durch das ganze

Karlovy Vary takes care of its visitors and patients all year
round, in spite of it, the beginning of each new summer season
is traditionally celebrated in the biggest Czech spa town at the
first weekend in May. The highlight of the celebrations is an
allegorical procession on Saturday. It will move through the
whole spa district and will be led by the founder of the town,
Emperor and King Charles IV. Representatives of the Czech
government, the diplomatic corps, partner towns and other
prominent visitors get together in Karlovy Vary on these days.

*17. srpna 1977 v Sofii / 17. August 1977, Sofia / born at August, 17-th 1977 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
V posledních letech je Pavel Mitkov nejúspěšnějším a evropskými znalci umění nejvyhledávanějším umělcem. Jeho
dílo bylo s obrovským úspěchem prezentováno na mnoha
důležitých výstavách v Evropě a USA. Namaloval spoustu
různorodých obrazů a vyhrál řadu cen. Mezi těmi, kdo obdrželi jeho díla jako dar, byl papež Jan Pavel II, Jeho královská Výsost Albert II., belgický král, ruský prezident Putin
a senátorka Hillary Clintonová.
Díla Pavla Mitkova jsou expresivní, plná energie, půvabná,
dynamická a velmi pozitivní. Pavel Mitkov maluje převážně
