Syria
The length of the Syrian conflict is
taking a toll on the refugee camps
On the border between Turkey and Syria, several large
refugee camps were set up as early as the start of the
conflict between the government forces and the Syrian
opposition. The camps are now in bad condition as a result
of the long-term conflict, as they are mostly equipped with
tents. There is a high crime rate, and they are in need of
humanitarian aid, water as well as healthcare services.
A possible solution would be to build up a temporary
complex comprised of residential modules, which compared
to the current situation would provide a high level of comfort,
a central infirmary, water and sanitary stations, as well as
administrative space for humanitarian organizations.

Shelter
In many places around the world we see massive migrations of people whose
lives are in danger; they have lost their homes to natural disasters, are suffering
from a lack of food, or are stricken by poverty. Refugees first find refuge in tent
camps; however, these are not suitable for stays exceeding several months.
That is why KOMA Space offers temporary humanitarian camps built using the
SmartSpacePack system, which allows for more long-term housing in relatively
high comfort and safety. The residential units and other buildings from the
SmartSpacePack are usually complemented by sanitary stations – a source
of drinking water, restrooms and laundry rooms.
8
k o m a s h e lt e r
A camp for 500 families = 500 residential
units + 5 sanitary stations = 12 weeks
The unique SmartSpacePack allows a housing unit, school,
simple administrative building or hospital to be built using one’s own
hands, without the need for any heavy machinery, just by following
a set of instructions. Thanks to special logistics, the modules are
transported to the site disassembled.
Design
The first step is to define the particular need, i.e. the number of
people or families, based on which the number of residential units is
determined. An adequate number of sanitary stations or other buildings
such as schools, administrative or health care facilities are then added.
In the preparatory phase, the KOMA project team proposes
an urbanistic design for the camp.
Logistics
The SmartSpacePack system uses top-of-the-line logistics. Four
modules are transported in one pack, and this pack is typically shipped
with other packs with tools in a larger package – the HIGH CUBE
shipping container, which can hold 16 residential units, a small school,
an administrative building or an infirmary. The Logistics department
creates a schedule for the delivery of the camp, the transportation
and distribution of the packs.
Construction
The SmartSpacePack is based on the construction of light-weight
modules that can be assembled according to an instruction manual
even without the use of heavy construction equipment. The construction
of a large unit can be finished in just days. The system was developed
so that its construction would take place with the active involvement
of the refugees.

koma disaster
Chile
Chile stricken by another powerful
earthquake
The Republic of Chile regularly suffers from high-magnitude
earthquakes. In 2012 alone there were several quakes
exceeding mark 6 on the Richter scale. This results in
the need to find a construction solution which would
ensure safety during the education of preschoolers and
schoolchildren. The KOMA system is an ideal solution for
school buildings. The system was used in 2009 after the
devastating earthquake in the city of L’Aquila, Italy, where
the KOMA company built a school with 22 classrooms.
11

Disaster
Any natural disaster presents an extreme
interference with the lives of the affected population,
who first of all need humanitarian, medical and other
kinds of aid. These people look for ways to return to
a normal life again. In such situations, KOMA Space
offers an immediate solution. School buildings in
high-risk areas must meet strict criteria in terms of
static stability and resilience, fire protection, but also
hygiene and acoustic standards.
12
koma disaster
1 school = 22 classrooms = 7 weeks
= 1st school day
The KOMA Space system is not “merely” a building; it is
a series of activities, a unique system, which in a designated place
can erect a construction based on pre-determined criteria, in high
quality, and 90% finished. Thanks to the KOMA Space system, the
school with twenty-two classrooms can start to serve its purpose
within 7 weeks of the project’s definition.
Design
First of all, the KOMA designer team needs the definition of the
project – the expected size and location of the construction site,
the type of landscape, the number of classrooms, etc. Other specific
requirements that affect the type of construction used and its layout
include fire protection, sanitary requirements, impact resistance,
etc. Based on these requirements, KOMA designers propose an ideal
solution for evaluation.
Logistics
Logistics is the key element in the KOMA Space system. Already
in the preparatory phase, i.e. at the time of the project’s planning,
the intralogistics, which ensures flawless, efficient and precise
production, is key.
Production
Following its approval, the project enters the production stage. We
do not offer pre-manufactured modules, because the KOMA Space
system is based on an individual solution and approach in order to
meet each customer’s individual criteria. Ninety percent of the entire
construction is completed in the production hall.
Logistics
During the production stage, the key element of the KOMA Space
system, the Logistics department figures out the mode of transport,
the placement of the construction on the designated site, including
connections to the technical infrastructure available. After the
production stage, the construction is delivered on schedule to the
agreed location, either in a “flatpack” version, or as finished modules.
Finishing works
The KOMA Space system makes it possible to finish the construction
without the assistance or supervision of the KOMA realization team;
however, the KOMA team can carry out the entire assembly upon the
client’s request.

Somalia
Somalia stricken by recurring
famine since the 1990s
The civil war in Somalia, which has lasted for more than
20 years, has caused a number of humanitarian crises,
the most significant of which is the recurring famine.
The humanitarian organizations operating in this area are
in a difficult position; however, they are looking for ways
to distribute medical and humanitarian aid. Under the
protection of African Union troops, one of the possibilities
is to build hospitals and places intended for the distribution
of humanitarian aid using a system of modular construction.
Such buildings can be easily moved, yet they provide much
needed safety.

Help
Sub-Saharan Africa is known as an area affected by
extreme poverty. The local inhabitants often suffer
from diseases, starvation and conflicts. These people
frequently seek the help of international non-profit
humanitarian organizations. That is why the portfolio
of the KOMA Space system also includes humanitarian
stations built using the SmartSpacePack system, which
makes them easy to transport and assemble
in just days without the need for heavy machinery.
16
koma help
1 infirmary + 1 warehouse + 1 humanitarian
aid distribution point = 1 humanitarian
station = 4 weeks
The SmartSpacePack is a unique system mainly thanks to the
possibility of quick construction without the use of any heavy
construction equipment. In adverse conditions, this is a crucial
feature. The light-weight and practical modules in packs ensure
problem-free transport even to poorly accessible areas.
Defining the needs
First of all, it is necessary to define the requirements. Based on
the definition of the needs, the KOMA designer team proposes the
design of the humanitarian station – the size of the infirmary, with or
without temporary housing capacity, warehouse and other facilities.
The project design then requires a certain number of modules and
a recommendation as to how to make the set of buildings operational.
Logistics
The SmartSpacePack system is dependent on logistics, especially
in the case of poorly accessible or high-risk areas. As soon as the
designer team determines the number of modules, KOMA logisticians,
in close cooperation with international organizations, plan the optimum
way of packing and transportation so that the complete modules can
safely get to the designated place.
Construction
The SmartSpacePack enables simple construction according to an
instruction manual. Moreover, KOMA Space organizes training sessions
for international humanitarian organizations, at which their workers
have the possibility to learn and practice the construction of their
future humanitarian station.

Employment information offices
along the USA-Mexico border
To solve the problem of illegal immigration from Mexico,
the Unites States have built a closely guarded fence.
Non-profit organizations are trying to mitigate this solution,
considered inhumane by some, by providing information
on the possibility of getting work permits for those who
are interested in working legally in the United States.
A temporary building on the USA-Mexico border could serve
as a facility for the border patrol together with an NGO,
which could give advice on how to find legal jobs in the
United States.
Frontier
The purpose of the fence along the USA-Mexico border is to
prevent people in search of illegal employment in the Unites
States from crossing the border. Apart from using such
repressive steps, this objective can be achieved by preventative
measures – providing information on the possibility of legal
employment. For this purpose, it would be possible to use
the variable KOMA Space system, which can be used in the
construction of combined buildings – in this particular case
a police station and an information center in one.
20
koma frontier
1 combined building = 2 administrative rooms
= 1 public space = 1 room for temporary
accommodation = 2 restrooms = 4 weeks
The modular KOMA Space system is attractive mainly because of its
variability and quick construction, which does not pose any burden
for the surrounding area. Moreover, the possibility of anchoring the
KOMA building on ground screws allows a virtually unlimited choice
of construction lot. Close collaboration with architects then leads
to the creation of an original design for the building.
Architectural design
The first step in any project is to define the function of the building.
In cooperation with the client, the KOMA architectural team ensures
the efficient use of space and focuses not only on the layout, but also
the overall effect and appearance of the building. The wide choice in
the selection of facade type, the arrangement of modules, but also
the individual architectural approach will ensure that the resulting
structure meets the complex individual requirements of the building.
Production and logistics
Following approval of the project design, the production phase starts.
The production of the buildings, which takes place in a production hall,
uses cutting-edge technology and focuses on every little detail. After
thorough logistical preparations, the completed modules are delivered
according to a time schedule to the designated location, where the
KOMA assembly team either directly carries out the actual construction
or provides supervision.
Construction
The modular construction of the KOMA system is designed to be ‘superfast’. By construction we mean only setting the modules in place, their
connection and finishing works. A building consisting of 6 modules
can be fully operational within a week of delivery of the modules. This
means the building can potentially be relocated; it is a mobile solution.

Siberia
Siberian Republic of Buryatia is
considering the construction of
modular hospitals
Representatives from the Republic of Buryatia, which is
part of the Russian Federation, visited KOMA Space to
negotiate the project of constructing modular hospitals so
that health care will be accessible even to residents living in
remote areas. The project, which starts off with roughly five
hospitals, could be realized using the KOMA Space system,
mainly thanks to its flexibility and precision. Our Buryatian
guests see the investment in modular hospitals as an
efficient utilization of financial subsidies.
23
koma space
East
In the Russian Federation, there are long distances
between villages and cities. Mainly in the Asian part
of the country, this means extremely difficult access
for example to health care. This problem is most
noticeable in Siberia, e.g. in the Republic of Buryatia.
That is why KOMA Space has created a project for
a network of modular hospitals, which could be
located in such a way as to be available even for
people living in poorly accessible areas.
24
koma east
1 hospital + 1 pharmacy = 8 weeks
The KOMA Space modular construction is practical,
flexible and efficient, which allows it to be used for
just about any building anywhere in the world. Thanks to its prefabrication, the KOMA Space system allows the construction to
be adapted to any requirements and delivered to the designated
location virtually as a finished building.
Design
The first step in creating any building constructed in the KOMA
Space system is to define its future functionality. This is followed by
the preparation of its design, which among other things takes into
consideration the climatic conditions and sanitation standards. When
designing the modules, KOMA designers take into account a series of
factors so that the building will precisely meet the set requirements.
In close collaboration with the client, a building adapted to individual
needs is designed.
Production and logistics
The KOMA system is based on speed, precision, attention to detail
and efficiency. That is why immediately after the handover of the
blueprint to production, logisticians start planning the transportation
and organization of the finishing works. As the manufacturing of the
modules in the production hall is realized according to very specific
data, only finishing works remain to be done during the building’s
assembly on site.
Construction
The KOMA system of modular construction is based on maximum
simplicity. The precision of the production process ensures that the
construction in the designated location is realized in a very short time.
However, this in no way means reduced demands placed on the building
itself. Quite the opposite: the buildings meet all sanitation, thermalinsulation and fire protection standards. KOMA Space offers to either
assemble the construction or provide supervision thereof.

Antarctica
The Czech Republic can have
a research station in Antarctica
A modern modular research station for a year-round stay of
up to 20 researchers could be built in Antarctica. Thanks to
its variability, the KOMA modular system can be used in the
construction of an environmentally sensitive building, which
will meet demanding energy-efficiency criteria.
27
koma space
Extreme
The variability and flexibility of modular constructions using the KOMA
Space system allows structures to be built even in locations where
traditional construction would be impossible or at least very difficult.
That is why the KOMA Space system finds use mainly in non-standard
conditions and extreme situations. Without doubt one of the more unusual
locations for the construction of buildings is Antarctica. The advantages
of modular construction in building research stations in the Antarctic
region lie not only in its practicality and speed, but also the fact that
structures built using the KOMA Space system can be easily relocated.
28
koma extreme
1 research station + 8 storage containers
= 2 sleeping accommodation units + 1
laboratory + 1 administrative room + 2
sanitary facilities + 8 warehouses = 8 weeks
Because of its modular nature, the KOMA Space system enables
the construction of a wide range of buildings even in extreme
conditions. Its unique character and high variability offer the
possibility to build highly specific structures such as a research
station in Antarctica intended for a year-long stay of up to 20
scientists.
Architectural design
The architectural aspect of the design of research stations in
Antarctica is perhaps more important than in many other types of
buildings. Such structures are not only about practicality, optimum use
of space and technical properties such as thermal insulation. What
also matters in these types of buildings is their appearance. Not only
does a research station need to be easily visible and identifiable, but it
must also look good. In these types of design, it is expected that they
will be extensively covered by the media, and the more architecturally
attractive the building is, the more media coverage it will get compared
to other buildings that may be equally functional, but visually
uninteresting. The KOMA architectural team can deliver both – perfect
functionality and attractive appearance.
Production and logistics
The realization of such a unique project is conducted in perfect
cooperation between the architectural, production and logistical teams.
The specific requirements are reflected in all of these segments, which
complete their tasks with increased attention in order to meet the
great demands for such a specific structure.
Construction
One of the essential qualities of the KOMA Space system is its
flexibility, which is understandably also reflected in the production
itself. It is not just about the choice of module composition, but also
the possibility to anchor the construction using ground screws so
that the construction works in the designated location can be reduced
to the minimum and not pose a burden for the surrounding area.
Thanks to these qualities, the construction process using the KOMA
Space system is very environmentally friendly, as 90% of all the
construction works does not take place at the construction site, but
rather in the production hall, where it is conducted in line with stringent
environmental standards.

The harsh life on an oil rig
Oil companies are trying to ease the difficult life of staff
working on oil rigs by equipping these with comfortable
housing and administrative facilities. An oil rig is
a construction built in open ocean, and because of its
temporary character, the solution of esthetically acceptable
and comfortable sleeping and living quarters for its staff
requires the KOMA system of modular construction.
Mining
KOMA Space specializes in the construction of residential modules to be used
anywhere in the world, which is why the portfolio of KOMA Mining includes
modular units that can be used in specific types of environment. The company
focuses particularly on modular construction for extreme conditions and realizes
not only solutions intended for housing and administration purposes, but also
offers protective, explosion-proof containers. One of the company’s projects was
the delivery of sleeping quarters for a Shell oil rig. Also installed on this rig was
an explosive-resistant container.
32
koma mining
1 three-storey sleeping quarters
+ 1 administrative building + 4 explosion- proof protective containers = 1 complete
set of oil rig facilities = 16 weeks
Among other things, KOMA Space focuses on supplying complete
facilities for people who live and work, or are temporarily stationed
in extreme conditions. Thanks to its flexibility, speed and
practicality, KOMA modular construction can be used in places
where other types of construction cannot.
Design
It goes without saying that with any specific construction, great
emphasis is put on creating an ideal project which is directly modified
to the client’s needs and requirements. The KOMA Mining system
is based on an individual approach, which allows the creation of quite
unique modules. One such example is the explosion-proof container
which KOMA developed for the Shell Corporation.
Production and logistics
The production of specific modules is often difficult, as it must
go through complex testing processes. Parallel with the “living
quarters for the Shell oil rig” project, living and sanitary modules and
a protective container are being produced, which the developer team
has modified to the specific requirements. Meanwhile, the Logistical
department is planning, together with the client, the transportation
of the modules to the designated location.
Construction
The construction of the delivered modular set is conducted according
to individual agreement with the client. KOMA Space either assembles
the set on site or merely carries out supervision. The company also offers
special training to clients so that they can assemble the sets themselves.
This possibility is much appreciated mainly if the construction
is to be extended, reduced or relocated.
