V rámci doprovodného literárního festivalu vystoupí 370 účinkujících z nich 59 zahraničních a počet doprovodných pořadů dosáhne úctyhodného čísla 338. To bychom zacházeli příliš daleko. To si netroufám posoudit. A tam najdeme rozdíly a rozmanitosti…. Původně nesrovnatelně skromnější parodie na velké reality show typu Big Brother a Vyvolení dávno přežila své inspirační vzory. Nabídla totiž českému divákovi odchovanému Švejkem a Cimrmanem odstup, nadhled a hlavně humor. Rozhodující zůstává, nakolik dokážou média, která vyjadřují velmi dynamický vývoj v oblasti spotřební elektroniky a informačních technologií v tomto desetiletí, nabídnout obsah. Vedle tradičních ocenění v kategorii výtvarné, literární a překladatelské byla letos poprvé udělena nová cena „Rosteme s knihou“, v rámci kampaně, kterou organizuje společnost Svět knihy. „Interaktivní učebnice nabízí učiteli možnost použití video ukázek, můžeme pracovat s obrázky i aktivně látku procvičovat,“ říká učitelka Aneta Navrátilová, která s žáky interaktivní učebnice používá. To samozřejmě dává prostor povrchní a místy i primitivní zábavě. Vysoce kvalitní obraz a věrná reprodukce zvuku naopak mohou pouze přispět ke zmírnění nevkusu. Co se týče formátů Blu-ray Disc a vysokého rozlišení obrazu (High Definition), které mnozí návštěvníci uvidí poprvé, budu velmi rád, když se během tří let potvrdí, že mají budoucnost a představují dobrou volbu. zat Some 526 exhibitors from thirty-five countries take part in the 13th annual BookWorld book fair, which was officially opened by the cutting of the ribbon by the Czech Minister of Culture Mr. Václav Jehlička yesterday morning. The literary festival’s accompanying programme will feature a total of 370 performers, including 59 guests from abroad, and the number of accompanying events will reach the total sum of 338. This year the book fair is visited for the very first time by representatives of China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Turkey and the city of Sankt Petersburg. The selection of speakers who opened this year’s book fair was also very distinguished. The first to speak on behalf of the guests of honour, the German-speaking countries of Switzerland, Austria and Germany, was the Austrian ambassador to the Czech Republic Ms. Margot Klestil-Löffler, who emphasised that “..books create bridges between authors and readers in different linguistic environments.” The German ambassador Mr. Helmut Elfenkämper has stressed that German-language literature is historically closely linked with Prague, but that we must be interested not only in preserving this heritage, but also in new names and new authors, with which German readers become more and more familiar through translations. There followed an address from the Swiss Chargé d’Affaires Ms. Dominique Petter, who spoke about the importance of linguistic diversity. The Czech Minister of Culture, Mr. Václav Jehlička, also mentioned the fact that in the past the Czech capital was home to extensive literature in German and reminded the audience that the entire book fair focuses on the relationship between literature and multimedia. “Modern information technologies can represent good medium for the message of culture for the future,” he added. The Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr, Karel Schwarzenberg, informally recalled his meetings with important figures of German-lan- Bodo Kirchhoff, born 1948 in Hamburg, lives and works in Frankfurt am Main and on Lake Garda in Italy. The winner of many awards, the writer has published novels and short stories and is also in demand as a screenplay writer. The novella “Der Prinzipal” was published in German this spring; “Krvák”, the Czech translation of “Der Schundroman”, is published by Mladá fronta. Bodo Kirchhoff is the guest at the BookWorld’s Literary Café on May 4th. In your new book “Der Prinzipal”, which you introduce today at BookWorld, you show a man of action who has stumbled across an affair and then discovers that he also has a family. You refer to political events in Germany and to contemporary figures. Is it a political book? That certainly goes too far. The book is first and foremost a reckoning between a grandson and his grandfather, to that extent, the political is reflected here on a private level. “Der Prinzipal” is a parable for the relationship between the generations, showing the thinking and behaviour of a representative of the founding generation and his grandson who is very restrained – just as today’s youth is very restrained in general. And less political? No, they are interested, but they take a more rational view of the world. In my generation, people still believed you could change the world by taking to the streets. The grandfather, on the other hand, is the classic dictator who believes in being able to change the world from above – including through reason. You once said of your novel “Krvák” (in German “Schundroman”) that it had been a pleasure to write a piece of light fiction. Is writing otherwise hard work for you? Writing is always the worst work I can imagine. Because reaching an audience has become far more difficult than it was. A large part of the work consists of dealing with the meaninglessness of writing. Being successful as a writer is like a lottery. Is literature more important to people in Central and Eastern Europe than it is in the West? I can’t really judge that. I have the impression that there is greater interest in literature compared to the West, which is certainly something to do with recent history. In the Czech Republic too, and particularly in a city with such literary influences as Prague, there probably still are more people who are interested in literature. But I think that here too, other entertainment options are coming to the forefront more and more. Is there such a thing as a European narration? Yes, I think so. American narration is far more journalistic in style and orientated to everyday detail. In the European narrative tradition, on the other hand, there is the strand of imagination, of the epic, strongly linked to philosophy and in the classic modern age above all, to the great dramas (fascism, communism) of the 20th century. Will these narrative traditions be able to endure in the age of globalisation? More and more general criteria will emerge as the basis on which entertainment functions worldwide. But there will certainly also be a countercurrent, a regionally conditioned literature. At least I hope that there is an interest in hearing how storytellers perceive their surroundings, that people want to know not just from television about changes in a country, in a region. Once young people have seen through the possibilities and limitations of television and the internet, then they will also realise that the medium of storytelling and language can do more. To that extent, I firmly believe that there will be a renaissance in narration. Sybille Fuhrmann guage literature and the Minister of Education, Ms. Dana Kuchtová, has described BookWorld as a “great achievement, which significantly contributes to the spreading of education.” In the end the EU Commissioner for Multilingualism Mr. Leopard Orban stressed that in Europe “we must learn to listen, read and learn”, remarking that the year 2008 will become the European year of cultural dialogue and that “written word shows us how we understand one another in Europe.” IKml. Yesterday morning bore witness to the opening ceremony of the exposition of this year’s guests of honour – German-language literature from Austria, Germany and Switzerland, with the motto “Discovering Future through Reading” which took place in the central hall. The welcoming address was presented by the president of the Austrian Association of Booksellers and Publishers Dr. Alexander Potyka. His address mainly focused on the changes in Europe, the growing opportunities for communication, for getting closer, travelling, learning more about each other. Mr. Potyka stressed, however, that all this should go deeper than the superficial consumer tourist clichés. “If you look at the way people live next to each other, at first sight everything appears the same. The same houses, same appartments, same people leading the same lives. It is necessary to look inside. That is where the differences and diversities can be found… Differences and diversities can be seen by a person who is capable of communication. And literature is the tool of communication. Through literature we can discover all this.” Dr. Potyka concluded by emphasising that “cultural diversity is the basis not just of the present, but also of the past.” He also expressed his belief that the German-language literature exposition is a step toward supporting this cultural diversity. IKml. One of the key principles of the European Union is that all the important documents produced by this institution can be accessed by its citizens in their national language. RaŠ tional Geographic or Discovery. The Un- One of the new features of this year’s BookWorld, likely to attract many visitors, is the multimedia technologies pavilion. Its organiser Pavel Borowiec, director of DVD Group.cz, believes that it does not represent competition for books and that new technologies can actually serve as inspiration for readers. What age category is the multimedia section mainly intended for? In my opininon, the use of multimedia, film DVDs or even PC games or game consoles is no longer limited by age. The most important thing is what kind of content can these media, which represent the very dynamic development that is taking place in the field of consumer electronics and information technologies in this decade, offer. The same is true of such personal devices as, for example, MP3 or video, which are by no means only used by the younger generation, or the high picture definition format, which will, in a few years time, replace the PAL standard format, because it will offer a distnictly higher image quality. While this would mainly make it popular with the middle generation, very young game players also find it fascinating because of Play Station 3. What can the visitors look forward to? Will it be mostly well-tried products or will you also be presenting some brand new technologies? BookWorld, I believe, is a prestigious trade fair, at which it would be hardly appropriate to feature well-established products that have been on the market for quite some time now. It is a place for the best brands in the field, such as Sony, Pioneer, Onkyo or JVC, and the technologies of the future. A part of the screenings will therefore be dedicated to High Definition (HD) and also to Blu ray, first appearing on the Czech market in April 2007. BookWorld will thus become the first significant trade fair in the Czech Republic to introduce this format to the general public. We want to provide its visitors with an opportunity to listen to live books and also to find out more about the attractiveness of the e-book format – which makes it possible for text to be read from a pocket device or from the screen of a notebook – from the point of view of the Czech market, including the publishers. Do you not think that this section is something of a “Trojan horse” at the book fair? Do the new technologies not, in fact, go for the book’s throat, so to speak? Modern technologies cannot go for the book’s throat. In this sense it is only a question of the readers or the audiences being capable of chosing a book or a film according to certain criteria. I am afraid that the crisis of critical approach to entertainemnt and art is ever-increasing, as many people no longer understand how or even why they should strive for better orientation in this field. This, of course, opens up the space for superficial and often also primitive entertainment. High-quality picture and faithful reproduction of sound, on the other hand, can only contribute to a dicrease of bad taste. What is your own perspective of the co-existence of books and new technologies? As far as the relationship between literature and film is concerned, I would like to mention the fact that the most respected Czech film of all times is the adaptation of the novel Marketa Lazarová, and the bestselling DVD video and the box-office record holder among foreign films is Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Last year’s fairly extensive DVD video offer included such films as Capote or The Constant Gardener. These titles can no doubt lead their audiences to books, which brings us back to the question of whether the viewer or the reader knows how to choose. It was always true that books represent a unique and irreplacable source of inspiration for the making of high-quality films. This still holds. The exceptional position enjoyed by films in the 1960s in the context of Czech cinematography is to a large extent linked with its opportunities to adapt exceptionally good novels. On the other hand, the marginal position occupied by Czech films in the past fifteen years stems, at least in part, from the fact that no such novels were available to the filmmakers. As far as the Blu ray Disc format and High Definition are concerned, seen by many visitors here for the first time, I would be very happy if within three years they proved that they are a good choice with good prospects for the future. zat Yesterday the book fair hosted the 15th Golden Ribbon awards ceremony, focusing on literature for children and young people. The ceremony traditionally took place on Thursday afternoon, and was organised by the Czech section of the IBBY in co-operation with the Children’s Book Illustrators Club, the Writers’ Guild and the Translators’ Guild.
