Geography
• The UK lies off the north-west coast of Europe on the
British Isles
• It is an island country with the area of 244,805 sq km
• It is separated from France by The English Channel

• The North Sea washes its coast in the east and north
• The Irish Sea lies between Great Britain and Ireland
• The Atlantic Ocean washes its west coast

• There are not many high mountains in the UK,
the highest can be found in Scotland:
• The Highlands of Scotland (Ben Nevis, 1,343m)
• A natural border between England and Scotland
is formed by The Cheviot Hills
• The Pennines – are called the backbone of
England
• The Cumbrian Mountains – the Lake District
• In Wales – the Cambrian Mountains ,
Snowdonia (Snowdon, 1,085 m)
Rivers
• The UK does not have very
big or long rivers
• The largest rivers in England
are the Thames,
• the Severn,
• the Trent,
• The Tyne or the Tweed in
Scotland
Lakes
• The Lake District ( Lake Windermere) is a place of wild
nature and romantic landscape
• The largest lakes lie in the Highlads of Scotland (Loch
Lomond, Loch Ness)
Cities
• London – the capital, a city which has got
something for everyone, museums, art galleries,
shopping, sightseeing.

• Glasgow – the largest city in Scotland
• Liverpool
• Leeds
• Shefield
• Edinburgh – lies in the south-east of Scotland, it is
worth visiting mainly because of its castle
