GENDER
Unit 1 NOUNS – Gender, Number, Genitives. VERBS – to be, to have, to do; Present Tense; Imperatives. GENDER - ROD Anglický rod nepředstavuje zvláštní potíže. Osoby se zpravidla označují jako he nebo she, věci i zvířata it. Na rozdíl od češtiny, kde existuje rod gramatický, angličtina vykazuje rod přirozený (natural) dle pohlaví. Celá řada pojmenování může označovat živé bytosti rodu mužského nebo ženského podle souvislostí (author, cat, cook, cousin, doctor, mouse, pupil, reader, student, teacher). Formální rozlišení rodu mužského a ženského u pojmenování osob a zvířat: man – woman, husband – wife, boy – girl, brother – sister – nephew – niece, son – daughter, sir – madam, gentleman – lady; bull – cow, stallion – mare, dog – bitch, cock – hen; actor – actress, count – countess, duke – duchess, host – hostess, master – mistress, prince – princess, steward – stewardess, tiger – tigress; hero – heroine, usher – usherette; widower – widow, bridegroom – bride; man student – woman student; girl friend – boy friend; male teacher – female teacher; man-servant – maid-servant; dog – dog-bitch; cat – tom-cat, pussy-cat; he-goat – shegoat. Zvláštnosti nacházíme u: 1. ZVÍŘAT – ANIMALS Zvířata se chápou jako životná (he/she), když se jim přisuzuje osobnost, inteligence, city. Jde zvláště o oblíbená domácí zvířata (pets). Go and find the cat and put him out. Once upon a time there was a rabbit called Luke. He lived in a forest … 2. DOPRAVNÍCH PROSTŘEDKŮ – CARS (and other personal means of transport) Někteří označují auta jako she. ‘How’s your new car?’ – ‘Terrific. She’s going like a bomb.’ 3. ZEMÍ – COUNTRIES I země mohou mít ženské označení, např.: France has decided to increase her trade with Romania. Když se vyjadřuje odkaz ke skupině (student, politician), vzniká zpravidla problém se zájmenem. Zde jsou některá řešení: If a student needs advice about careers, he or she should consult the Careers Officer. Tomuto způsobu se často raději vyhneme a můžeme zvolit pouze označení he: A politician may try to be completely honest, but he always finds he has to compromise. U neurčitých zájmen typu (anybody/anyone, somebody/someone, everybody/everyone atd.) často užíváme they. If anybody’s lost a purse, they can get it from the office. 1 nobody/no-one, Unit 1 NOUNS – Gender, Number, Genitives. VERBS – to be, to have, to do; Present Tense; Imperatives. EXERCISES 1. GENITIVE CASE – PŘIVLASTŇOVACÍ PÁD Ke jménům osob v singuláru, plurálu nebo k nepravidelnému plurálu: my father’s car, my sister’s school, someone’s passport, nobody’s problem Ke jménům v plurálu: boys’ books, women’s clothes, children’s toys K vlastním křestním jménům v singuláru: Denis’s cat, Charles’s wife Avšak k řadě starších jmen nebo jmen cizích: Guy Fawkes’ night, Socrates’ [sokrati:siz] ideas, Archimedes’ Law (Archimedův zákon), Sherlock Holmes’ best friend, ale Mrs Jones’s husband, Chris’s idea U podstatných jmen složených a sousloví se klade ‘s až na konec celé složeniny nebo sousloví: Sue and Frank’s daughter, father-in-law’s tchánův, commander-in-chief’s hlavního velitele, King of England’s anglického krále, the Secretary of State’s decision rozhodnutí ministra zahraničí, somebody else’s decision rozhodnutí někoho jiného, a year or two’s time doba jednoho nebo dvou let. Pro výslovnost koncovky ’s platí táž pravidla jako pro výslovnost plurálové koncovky -s. Přivlastňovacímu pádu ’s se dává přednost u osob (the boy’s book), jejich skupin (the boys’ books, government’s decision, the company’s office), v menší míře i u zvířat (the horse’s teeth). Kromě samotného přivlastnění (my father’s house), může vyjadřovat vztahy (John’s mother), fyzické vlastnosti (the cat’s tail) nebo nefyzické kvality (the plan’s importance) či míru (three day´s journey). V následujících případech užití přivlastňovacího pádu jde o vyjádření druhu, nikoli vlastního přivlastnění: children’s literature, cow’s milk, a schoolboys’ uniform, men’s clothes. Přivlastňovací pád se často užívá u výrazů času, vzdálenosti, míry, hodnoty apod.: (a week’s holiday - týdenní dovolená, in two weeks’ time, today’s guest - dnešní host): ten minutes’ walk two hours’ journey three days’ holiday a week’s stay five years’ work last summer’s holiday deset minut chůze, procházka dvouhodinová cesta třídenní dovolená týdenní pobyt pětiletá práce loňská letní dovolená Může se však užít i spojení bez přivlastňovacího pádu. Zde se číslovka a jednotka času pojí čárkou a u jednotky času odpadá koncovka množného čísla -s: a two-hour walk, a three-day holiday. Přivlastňovacího pádu lze užít i ve spojení s vlastními názvy zeměpisnými: England’s greatest explorer největší badatel Anglie, Poland’s exports polské vývozní zboží, Manchester’s early history raná historie Manchesteru. Může být i u názvů budov: St Paul’s (katedrála). Dále se jmény ročních období, měsíců, dní, se jmény sun, moon, earth, world: 9 Unit 1 NOUNS – Gender, Number, Genitives. VERBS – to be, to have, to do; Present Tense; Imperatives. last summer’s holiday, Sunday’s newspapers, the sun’s rays, the earth’s surface, the world’s trade, April’s showers; dále při personifikaci: Fortune’s favourite miláček Štěstěny, Nature’s work dílo Přírody a ustálených rčeních art for art’s sake umění pro umění, have a t. at one’s fingers’ ends mít něco v malíčku, be at one’s wits’ end být s rozumem v koncích, for goodness’ sake proboha, for John’s sake kvůli Janovi. Má-li se označit místo bez zvýraznění funkce, přidá se příslušný výraz jako shop, house, flat, atd. I’m staying at my aunt’s. I’m staying at my aunt’s house. Bydlím u tety. (jako host) Bydlím u tety. (zdržuji se v domě, přítomnost tety není nutná). Funkci vyjadřuje přivlastňovací pád ve spojeních typu (tzv. místní genitiv): at the butcher’s – u řezníka (the buther’s (shop) – řeznictví) at the grocer’s – v obchodě smíšeným zbožím at the florist’s – v květinářství Předložkový pád (of) bývá u neživotných substantiv (the quality of goods, the roof of the house, the streets of Prague). Dále se jím označuje objekt slovesného děje: the murder of the president, the crossing of the river. Po údajích množství a váhy: a cup of tea, a slice of bread, a small sum of money, a pair of shoes, two dozens bottles of wine. Po jménech označujících zeměpisné pojmy: the continent of Europe, the county of Kent, the city of Manchester, the island of Cyprus, the Isle of Wight; dále po výrazech: the university of Cambridge, the month of December, the title of professor. Pozor: časté chyby vlivem češtiny: v češtině není mezi číslovkou a zájmenem nebo mezi zájmeny genitiv předložkový, ale v angličtině musí být of: jeden můj přítel one of my friends několik jeho aut a few of his cars některé moje knihy some of my books každé její slovo each of her words. my dva the two of us které vaše knihy which of your books Dvojí genitiv se vyskytuje v následujících konstrukcích: He is a friend of my father’s. (one of my father’s friends) Where’s that stupid brother of yours. I wish I had a room of my own. EXERCISES 1. Put the possessive ending ’s or ’ in the space marked [] in the following expressions.
