NEWSLETTER 155 (May 07, 2014) GM DAVID NAVARA – CZECH CHESS CHAMPION GM David Navara won the Czech National Championship - Ostravský koník 2014 with final result of 8 points from possible 9. The silver went to IM Richard Biolek, who finished with 6.5 points and better tiebreak than the bronze winner GM Martin Petr. This is the sixth national title for David Navara. The championship was held from 26th of April to 4th of May in Ostrava. Chief-Arbiter of the tournament, organized by Ostrava Chess o.s., was FA Jiřina Prokopová, Tournament Director - Marek Jelínek. On a point distance from the winner finished the team of Chieti. Third was Libertas Nereto with 9 match points. Obiettivo Risarcimento Padova is the lastyear winner of the tournament. The championship was held from 30th of April to 4th of May, 2014 in Condino. Team composition of the winners was: GM Fabiano Caruana (2783), GM Hikaru Nakamura (2772), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (2758), GM Kiril Georgiev (2623), GM Michele Godena (2528), GM Daniele Vocaturo (2579), GM Danyyil Dvyrnyy (2560) and GM Roberto Morganzini (2499). The team of Chieti won the 7 th Italian Team Women Chess Championship with final result of 10 match points, second finished Scacchisti.it with the same result, third was Accademia Scacchi with 3 match points. The silver medal was taken by GM Arturs Neiksans with 6.5 points. The bronze went to IM Toms Kantans – 6 points. The Latvian Chess Championship was held from 29th of April to 5th of May, 2014 in Riga. Chief-Arbiter of the tournament, organized by the Latvian Chess Federation, was IA Cimins Alberts, Tournament Director - IO Lavendelis Egons. The average ELO rating was 2265. Thirty chess players competed for the title. In the women’s section winner became WIM Katrina Skinke with 6 points out of 7. Second was WGM Laura Rogule with 5.5 points, third finished WGM Ilze Berzina – 4.5 points. This year's event was also important in determining the Olympic team composition, additionally, the results of the Men's tournament will also determine who will have the right to play in the revived Baltic Zonal Tournaments. Spectators could hope for a week of uncompromising and fighting chess which the chess players did not fail to deliver as there were few quick draws. Men's tournament gathered 10 participants. The main favorites were GM Kaido Külaots and last year's winner FM Ottomar Ladva. The drawing of lots ensured an intriguing finish – Külaots and Ladva were to play in the last round. © Ecuonline.net Page 5 By that time both were beyond the reach of other players, with Külaots half a point ahead. Ladva had the Black pieces and chose risky continuations which gave Külaots a large advantage. The GM, however, forced a draw which was sufficient for win him his eigth national title. The winner, 14-year-old WCM Mai Narva, became the youngest player to win the Women's title. Her mother, WFM Regina Narva, won the bronze medal, and sister, WCM Triin Narva, was fourth. The silver medal went GM Aloyzas Kveinys – 6 points, the bronze was for IM Tomas Laurusas, who finished with 5.5 points. The championship was held from 24th of April to 1st of May, 2014 in Vilnius. Two hundred fifty five young chess players from forty-seven clubs competed in the tournament, which was organized by the chess club Etar, Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo and the Bulgarian Chess Federation.
