FRANTIŠEK KUPKA
František Kupka fut un homme polyvalent et d’une rare envergure, un peintre de génie, intellectuel, philosophe et visionnaire.
Après de nombreuses années, son oeuvre reçoit enfin l’attention
et la reconnaissance méritées de la part du grand public et des
experts. Toutefois, il faudra continuer à étudier de façon plus
approfondie une oeuvre complexe et encore mal connue. Ce
ne sera pas facile, mais l’évolution artistique de Kupka, ses méthodes picturales uniques, son chemin d’artiste et surtout son
apport à la peinture mondiale le justifient. Je reste fermement
convaincu que ce catalogue raisonné permettra une meilleure
compréhension de l’oeuvre de l’un des plus grands peintres abstraits du 20e siècle.

Le témoignage de George Waldes est authentique et vérifié,
puisqu’une amitié très proche lia les deux hommes. František Kupka
donna au jeune George des cours de peinture. George séjourna
plusieurs fois ches les Kupka à Puteaux (banlieue de Paris) pour
y apprendre le français et y vit dans l’atelier du peintre les tableaux
en cours de création.
George Waldes’s testimony is authentic and fully verified. František
Kupka was very close to George, who as a child and a teenager often
stayed at Kupka’s house in Puteaux to study French. He also received
painting classes from Kupka and witnessed the painter working on his
paintings in his atelier.
Svědectví George Waldese je nutno brát jako autentické a ověřené,
neboť František Kupka měl s Georgem velmi blízký vztah. Kupka učil
George v mládí malovat či George za účelem výuky francouzštiny
několikráte pobýval u Kupkových v Puteaux (předměstská čtvrť
Paříže), kde viděl osobně v ateliéru rozpracované Kupkovy obrazy.
Le travail sur ce catalogue a débuté après la signature d’une
convention de coopération avec la Galerie nationale à Prague,
en 2011. Il s’acheva en 2015 et comprend 359 peintures. L’oeuvre
de Kupka y est répartie en sept séries thématiques : Avant abstraction, Fugues à deux couleurs, Plans verticaux et diagonaux,
Motifs organiques, Histoires de formes et de couleurs, Série énergiques et mécaniques, Formes pures – synthèse et Série C. Une
recherche minutieuse dans les archives d’institutions partenaires et celles de Jindřich et George (Jiří) Waldes, les catalogues d’expositions ainsi que les documents accessibles au public
nous a permis d’attribuer à chacune des oeuvres présentées une
légende, une liste d’expositions, une bibliographie et une datation. Pour beaucoup de peintures de František Kupka, il est difficile de déterminer l’année exacte de la création. George Waldes
(1919–2013), le fils du collectionneur et ami le plus proche du
peintre, Jindřich Waldes, confirme que Kupka travailla à ses tableaux parfois pendant plusieurs années1.
Très souvent, il y revenait pour les retoucher ou les terminer,
parfois même quelques décennies plus tard (notamment avant
les expositions). Par conséquent, certaines peintures sont datées par une période, l’année présumée de début et de fin de
l’élaboration.
Les oeuvres douteuses, autrefois présentées en expositions
comme oeuvres de Kupka, ont été sorties du catalogue. Leur
liste complète est cependant proposée dans une section spéciale.
Le projet que nous vous présentons aujourd'hui, est unique
pour plusieurs raisons. Je suis honoré d’avoir pu collaborer
avec la Galerie nationale de Prague et le Belvedere de Vienne
afin d’établir ce catalogue raisonné, attendu depuis plus d’un
demi-siècle. Je tiens à remercier toutes les personnes et institutions qui nous ont fourni de précieuses informations, photographies et documents.
Introduction / Úvod
František Kupka was a man of unusual breadth and versatility a brilliant painter, intellectual, philosopher, and visionary. After
years of neglect, his work has finally started to attract the attention of the academic and the general public. Yet, there is still a
palpable need to continue uncovering and learning more about
his artistic journey. Though the process will not be easy, nonetheless Kupka’s artistic development, unique painting methods,
creativity, and above all contribution to art history certainly
deserve it. I truly hope that this catalogue raisonné of oil paintings will foster a more coherent understanding of Kupka, one
of the most important Abstractionists of the twentieth century,
and his work.
The efforts to create this catalogue date back to 2011, when our
gallery signed a contract with the National Gallery in Prague.
Finished five years later, it includes over 359 oil paintings.
Kupka’s artistic output was divided into seven thematic sections:
Before Abstraction, The ‘Fugue in Two Colours’ Series, The ‘Vertical and Diagonal Planes’ Series, The Organic Series, The Stories
of Shapes and Colours, The Energetic and Mechanical Series,
Pure Forms – Syntheses and Series C. Through meticulous research and the use of the archives of Jindřich and George
Waldes and the two participating galleries, as well as past exhibition catalogues and other publicly accessible documentation, a description, list of exhibitions, and a list of literature has
been created for each of the catalogued works. It is important
to emphasise that it is often very difficult to pinpoint precisely
the year of creation of Kupka’s works. As confirmed by Georges
Waldes (1919–2013), the son of the collector and closest friend
of František Kupka, Jindřich Waldes, it was hardly unusual for
the painter to work on his paintings for several years.1
Often, Kupka would return to his paintings, re-work them
and add finishing touches, sometimes even after decades and
particularly in advance of exhibitions. Given these circumstances, many of the paintings catalogued indicate both the year
of their supposed creation and of their completion.
Artworks of dubious status presented as authentic at past
exhibitions were excluded from the catalogue. A section dedicated to these paintings offers a coherent list.
This project and the the resulting catalogue are in many ways
unique. I am honoured to have worked on this comprehensive
catalogue raisonné with the National Gallery in Prague and
the Belvedere in Vienna, a publication that Kupka’s work has
been awaiting for over half a century. I would also like to thank
all those who participated, including all the institutions who
contributed by sharing valuable information, photographs, and
other materials.
František Kupka byl postavou neobvyklé šíře a mnohostrannosti – geniální malíř, intelektuál, filozof a vizionář. Jeho dílo se po
letech konečně dočkalo pozornosti a docenění odborné i široké
veřejnosti, avšak i nadále je potřeba usilovat o komplexnější poznání jeho neprobádané tvorby. Ačkoliv to nebude jednoduché,
Kupkův umělecký vývoj, unikátní malířské postupy, tvůrčí cesty
a především přínos světovému malířství si to zajisté zaslouží.
Pevně věřím, že tento soupis olejomaleb pomůže ucelenějšímu
porozumění díla jednoho z nejvýznamnějších abstrakcionistů
dvacátého století.
S vypracováním soupisu olejomaleb jsme začali po podepsání
smlouvy o spolupráci s Národní galerií v Praze v roce 2011.
Soupis byl dokončen v roce 2015 a čítá na 359 olejomaleb.
Kupkova tvorba byla rozčleněna do sedmi tematických okruhů: Předabstraktní, Řada Dvoubarevné fugy, Řada vertikálních
a diagonálních plánů, Řada organických motivů, Příběhy tvarů
a barev, Řada energických a mechanických, Čisté formy – syntézy
a Série C. Ke každému dílu byl na základě osobního průzkumu,
údajů z archivu autorů a archivu Jindřicha a George (Jiřího)
Waldese, výstavních katalogů, veřejně dostupných dokumentů a archiválií vypracován popis, soupis výstav, literatury
a vročení obrazu. Je důležité zdůraznit, že u obrazů Františka
Kupky je mnohdy velmi těžké přesně určit rok vzniku díla. Jak
potvrdil George Waldes (1919–2013), syn sběratele a nejbližšího
přítele Františka Kupky Jindřicha Waldese, malíř pracoval na svých
obrazech i několik let.1
Velmi často se ke svým obrazům vracel, aby je přepracoval
či dokončil, a to i po několika desetiletích (zejména před výstavami). Vzhledem k těmto okolnostem jsme dataci u některých
obrazů vymezili předpokládaným rokem vzniku a dokončení.
Díla pochybná, která byla v minulosti prezentována na výstavách jako díla autorská, byla ze seznamu vyřazena. Sekce věnující
se těmto malbám nabízí jejich přehled.
Tento projekt, stejně jako jeho výsledek, který dnes leží před
námi, je v mnoha směrech unikátní. Je mi ctí, že jsem mohl spolupracovat s Národní galerií v Praze a Belvedere Vídeň na tomto soupisu, na který Kupkovo dílo čekalo přes půl století. Zároveň bych chtěl poděkovat všem osobám a institucím, které nám
laskavě poskytly cenné informace, fotografie a další materiály.
