Significant features:
- representative of the Aesthetic movement in England proclaiming ´Art for Art´s Sake´
- dressed in a flamboyant (nápadný, výrazný) clothes in order to differ from the grey suits worn by
everybody during the Victorian period
- liked to show off his wit (důvtip)
- rebellion against society and conventional rules
- the cleverness of the way the ideas were presented was more important than their meaning
Significant work:
- poems: The Ballad of Reading Gaol – against the inhumanity of the justice system
- plays: Lady Windermere´s Fan (masterpiece)
The Importance of Being Earnest (masterpiece) – a classic comedy of English social manners

Personal life:
- the second son of a surgeon, also wrote books, notorious women seducer, his mother was a wellknown writer
- excellent student (Dublin, Oxford)
- married, had 2 sons , lived happily until he met Lord Alfred Douglas (a handsome young gentleman),
they became very close, Alfred´s father accused Wilde of being a sodomite
- after being released from prison, he was a broken man
- died of alcohol-poisoning, drugs and meningitis
Other important/interesting facts:
- his aim was - „we should treat all the trivial things of life seriously and all the serious things of life
with sincere and studied triviality.“
- towards the end of his life, he spent 2 years in prison for homosexual practices
