The comprehensive BMW ConnectedDrive package offers advanced technologies. Further information is also contained in the Product Selling Points for the BMW 6 Series Convertible. 6 BMW 6 Series Coupé 7 DESIGN THE PERFECT COUPÉ IN EVERY RESPECT. Top selling point. Breathtaking aesthetics, dynamic proportions, an elongated and elegant shape with a perfect coupé roofline. The distinctive silhouette visually makes the vehicle appear longer, for an elegant and dynamic look. The pronounced Hofmeister kink supports the gently dipping coupé roofline, emphasising the car’s forward urge. The spoiler lip forms the coupé roofline’s elegant conclusion. The side crease emphasises the elongated, dynamic design language while establishing a harmonious linkage between the vehicle elements. The “shark nose” angle of the BMW kidney grille creates road presence and expresses the car’s forward urge. Elongated and elegant, with a perfect coupé roofline, the BMW 6 Series Coupé is both athletic and sensuous. Its distinctive lines, long wheelbase and short front overhang harmonise with the body’s flowing design: the bonnet forms a muscular arch over the front axle before sweeping down towards the BMW kidney grille. The flowing coupé roofline encloses the occupant cell, ending in a graceful upward curve at the rear. The side crease makes the vehicle appear longer, contributing to its dynamic wedge shape. This emphasises the car’s athletic ability. 8 The kidney grille is divided into two sections. The slats are slightly wider in the upper area and slightly angled in the lower section, resulting in the sporty “shark nose” looks of the front. This distinctive kidney grille design also sets this car apart from other BMW models. BMW 6 Series Coupé 9 DESIGN BROAD SHOULDERS. WIDE STANCE. SQUARELY PLANTED ON THE ROAD. The lines of the boot lid and the number plate surround together form an athletic V-shape. Horizontal lines make the rear look wider. The reflectors are separated from the taillight clusters, drawing the eye to the sides. The tailpipes are spaced far apart and emphasise the car’s sporting looks; their design varies depending on the engine installed. A wide track and horizontal lines define the powerful look of the rear. The muscular wheel arches and tapering shape of the vehicle body lower the car’s visual centre of gravity. Yet the car retains a light, elegant look. Proportions compared. The Porsche 911 Carrera Coupé features a classic rear-engined sports car silhouette. A distinctive feature: the retractable rear wing. 10 The Mercedes-Benz CL 500 features an unusual rear design for this brand, with conspicuously placed reversing lights on either side of the number plate. It offers little sporting appeal. The Jaguar XK Coupé with its half round, half angular taillights looks like a car that is still in search of an identity. The obtrusive rear spoiler emphasises the fact that the rear looks too low. BMW 6 Series Coupé 11 A SHINING EXAMPLE OF INNOVATION: NEW ADAPTIVE LED HEADLIGHTS. The black accent line lends the front a resolute look. Top selling point. The Adaptive LED Headlights: for the first time, the low and high beams are entirely based on innovative LED technology. The white LED accent lights with visible light conducting technology create distinctive eyebrows. The cornering lights are switched on in town when cornering at slow speed, providing improved road illumination. The side marker lights light up when the low beam or high beam is activated. Adaptive LED headlights are unique in this segment. The new BMW 6 Series Coupé comes with optional Adaptive LED Headlights for the first time: the high and low beams are both completely LED-based and use both light rings. This makes for enhanced visibility and a more dynamic front design. The three-dimensional light rings also provide LED-based daytime driving lights. The indicators, cornering lights, accent lights and fog lamps also use LED technology. LED lights have the advantage that their colour temperature is similar to daylight, enhancing both comfort and safety. 12 The LED daytime driving lights lend the new BMW 6 Series Coupé its typical BMW looks. The Porsche 911 Carrera Coupé gains a highly recognisable identity from its traditional round headlights. However, they are not LEDbased, featuring instead bi-xenon technology with dynamic cornering lights. The three-dimensional LED light rings make a key contribution to the front’s distinctive and dynamic appearance. The Mercedes-Benz CL 500 has headlights that are half round and half angular. This makes the front design look inconsistent. No LED headlights, just adaptive bi-xenon headlights. In conjunction with Adaptive LED Headlights, the direction indicators are also LED-based. The Jaguar XK Coupé features headlights that lack character and are reminiscent of Japanese designs. Its matter-of-fact front offers little emotional appeal. No LED headlights, only bi-xenon with cornering lights and optional adaptive headlights. BMW 6 Series Coupé 13 A SHINING EXAMPLE OF INNOVATION: NEW ADAPTIVE LED HEADLIGHTS. The V-shape of the bonnet has its origin in the BMW emblem and the kidney grille. The muscular wheel arches underscore the vehicle’s square stance. The LED fog lamps are spaced in the far corners, adding depth and width. The large air inlet extends across the full width of the front. A clear reference to the powerful engine under the bonnet. The new BMW 6 Series Coupé has a trademark BMW front. At the same time, the individual interpretation of the various design elements ensures a distinctive look. The low kidney grille, the slightly recessed Adaptive LED Headlights, the V-shaped lines of the bonnet and the wide air inlet lend this vehicle’s front an unmistakable and exceptionally powerful look. Fog lamps. LED fog lamps are available as an option. Located in the far corners, they draw the eye to the muscular flared wheel arches. 14 Side indicators. The stylish chrome element below the side crease houses both the side indicator and the sensor for the optional Park Assistant. BMW 6 Series Coupé 19 THE MOST EFFICIENT FORM OF DYNAMICS. The BMW 640i Coupé. Its 235 kW accelerate the BMW 640i Coupé from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds, with a fuel consumption of 7.7 l/100 km. What makes this possible is the innovative combination of turbocharging, VALVETRONIC and petrol direct injection. The BMW TwinPower Turbo features a turbocharger driven by two separate exhaust gas streams (TwinScroll technology), for prompt engine response without turbo lag. Together with fully variable VALVETRONIC valve lift control and direct petrol injection, this makes for tremendous pulling power. ... WITH THE HEART OF AN ATHLETE. BMW EfficientDynamics Less emissions. More driving pleasure. The openings for the injector and spark plug are located side by side, at the centre of the combustion chamber’s roof. This is the most space-saving design. CUSTOMISED DYNAMICS. 8-speed sport automatic transmission Steptronic. As an alternative to the selector lever, drivers can use the steering wheel paddles to temporarily change gears in manual mode or D mode, without having to take their hands off the wheel. Adaptive Drive (optional) and Dynamic Damper Control (optional). Adaptive Drive is the combination of Dynamic Damper Control and the Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation system. During both the compression and rebound stages, the dampers and stabilisers adapt independently of each other to the road surface and driving conditions. This maximises both dynamic ability and ride comfort. Dynamic Damper Control is also available independently as an option. High Precision Injection with piezo injectors uses a system pressure of 200 bar per cylinder, ensuring high engine output and low fuel consumption. BMW EfficientDynamics adds another dimension to driving pleasure. Thanks to the pioneering BMW EfficientDynamics package, the powerful engines and exceptional dynamic performance of the new BMW 6 Series Coupé do not come at the cost of high fuel consumption. The Integral Active Steering (optional). At low speeds: At speeds up to around 60 km/h, the rear wheels turn the opposite way to the front wheels. This creates a degree of manoeuvrability that is completely unexpected from a vehicle in this category. This advantage becomes particularly apparent on narrow lanes, twisting roads, when turning into side streets or during parking manoeuvres. At higher speeds: At speeds above around 80 km/h, the rear wheels turn the same way as the front wheels. This ensures considerably enhanced driving stability, since lateral forces are noticeably reduced. Rear passengers especially will notice enhanced comfort, while to the driver it feels like their car is running on rails. Auto Start/Stop function (BMW 640i). When the vehicle is kept still during a stop through braking or the Automatic Hold function the engine is switched off automatically to save fuel. Air vent control (BMW 640i). Actively controlled flaps in front of the radiator (immediately behind the kidney grille) regulate the amount of air taken in to cool the engine in line with requirements. This also enhances aerodynamics. Brake Energy Regeneration. As soon as the driver takes his or her foot off the accelerator, the car’s redundant kinetic energy is transformed into storable electric energy. THE POWERFUL TWIN POWER TURBO V8. Electric Power Steering. Operates only during steering wheel movements. The rest of the time, the electric motor does not draw power. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The energy stored in the exhaust gases is used as efficiently as possible. ECO PRO mode (BMW 640i). Supports the driver in saving fuel, allowing savings of up to 10 per cent. The most powerful engine available for the BMW 6 Series Coupé is the new TwinPower Turbo V8 unit used in the BMW 650i. In the TwinTurbo, the exhaust gases from the cylinders are split into separate streams before entering the turbine. The energy stored in the exhaust gases is used as efficiently as possible, for a perfect response. The BMW 650i Coupé. The BMW TwinPower Turbo V8 engine delivers 300 kW of power, accelerating the most powerful BMW 6 Series Coupé from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, with a fuel consumption of 10.4 l/100 km. Its tremendous 600 Nm of torque are available from just 1,750 rpm, putting it almost on a par with state-of-the-art twelve-cylinder engines. Two parallel turbochargers ensure impressive pulling power at all times, for prompt and smooth acceleration. The BMW 650i compared. BMW 650i Coupé Engine Fuel consumption CO² emissions l/100 km g/km Max. output kW/hp 0–100 km/h s Porsche 911 Carrera Coupé MercedesBenz CL 500 V8 B V 10.4 . . 243 (EU 5) (EU ) (EU ) 300/407 / / 4.9 . . Chassis and drivetrain. The new BMW 6 Series Coupé scores top marks for precise handling and perfect directional stability. This is ensured by the perfect 50 : 50 axle load distribution and rear-wheel drive. With the rear-wheel drive translating the engine’s power into dynamic performance, the steering is completely unaffected by torque steer. The double-wishbone front suspension and integral V rear axle enable spirited driving as well as excellent ride comfort, rounding off a superior overall package. Top selling point. BMW EfficientDynamics for unalloyed driving enjoyment through incomparable dynamics and low fuel consumption. Driving Dynamics Control. A switch on the centre console next to the gear selector lever allows the driver to select either “NORMAL”, “COMFORT”, “SPORT” or “SPORT+” mode. In this way, they can select an individual vehicle set-up that corresponds to their present mood. NORMAL Trademark well-balanced BMW settings with maximum driving stability. Ideal for all those who want to switch from sporty driving to comfortable cruising, depending on the situation. COMFORT For an exceedingly comfortable driving experience, the 8-speed automatic transmission shifts gears gently, while steering and accelerator react precisely to every command. Bumps caused by uneven terrain are absorbed with consummate aplomb (this mode is only available with optional Adaptive Drive). SPORT Sporty suspension setting with maximum driving stability. The accelerator pedal responds with great immediacy, the steering reacts more directly, and the 8-speed automatic transmission lets the engine rev higher before changing gear (individual configuration possible via iDrive). For all those who enjoy making quick progress towards their destination. SPORT+ The ultimate sporty suspension setting with delayed stabilisation interventions. DTC is activated and enables slight drifting in bends. The accelerator pedal responds very promptly, and the 8-speed automatic transmission revs the gears to their limits. For very sporty and active driving. INTERIOR AN EXCLUSIVE AMBIENCE FOR THE THING THAT MATTERS MOST: SHEER DRIVING PLEASURE. Top selling point. Exclusive interior with new innovative features, elegant driver orientation and top-quality materials. The freestanding display rises above the instrument panel, allowing the dashboard to slope down sooner. Dashboard displays feature a black panel design. When switched off, all that is visible is a matt black surface. Innovations like the free-standing flatscreen Control Display (unique in this segment) enhance the premium appeal of the harmonious and contemporary interior. The hallmark BMW driver orientation has been implemented very elegantly and consistently in the new BMW 6 Series Coupé. All relevant control elements are within optimal reach for the driver, thanks to the slightly asymmetrical layout of the control panel. Audio functions can be accessed via the right-hand control panel on the multifunction steering wheel, while cruise control functions are on the left. The BMW 6 Series Coupé comes with steering wheel paddles as standard. 20 The optional, unique 10.2" Control Display is the biggest in this segment. It comes with a high-quality galvanised frame, underscoring the cockpit’s elegant ambience. Gear selector lever, iDrive Controller and controls for the air conditioning and audio system come in pearl-gloss chrome as standard and are also available with an optional ceramic trim. An elegant raised curve extending from the instrument panel into the centre console makes for a clear visual separation of all control elements used by the driver. The exclusive ambience also extends to the rear seats. The rear of the cabin features top-quality materials and an elegant design. The gently sloping coupé roofline ensures sufficient headroom. Top-quality leather. Select leather upholstery further enhances the exclusive ambience. Flat fell seams for the instrument panel, the upper door and side trims and the centre console are available as an option. BMW 6 Series Coupé 21 INTERIOR THE BEST SOUND OUTSIDE OF A CONCERT HALL, COURTESY OF BANG & OLUFSEN. The pop-up centre speaker includes a mid-range speaker and the acoustic lens, which ensures brilliant surround sound on all seats. The acoustic lens distributes the sound so as to ensure consistent sound quality at every point in the vehicle interior. The audio system in the new BMW 6 Series Coupé was developed in collaboration with Bang & Olufsen. It is composed of a fully active 16-channel amplifier with an output of 1,200 watt, 16 loudspeakers and a pop-up centre speaker with integrated mid-range speaker and Bang & Olufsen Acoustic Lens Technology. These are state-of-the-art hardware components with automatic volume and sound adjustment for a perfect surround sound with maximum audio fidelity. Two settings are available: “Studio”, for a very precise sound like in a sound studio, and “Expanded”. In this setting Dirac Dimensions Technology enables a virtual expansion of the room, for an incomparable surround sound experience. But the system has more to offer than amazing sound: the illuminated speaker grilles are made of solid aluminium and appear to hover in space, thanks to their “floating design” – a perfect synthesis of BMW and Bang & Olufsen design for a premium look and feel. 22 A brilliant listening experience. The distribution of tweeters, mid-range and bass speakers in the cabin ensures that occupants on all four seats can enjoy optimum sound quality. Dynamic Sound Optimisation adapts speaker volume and sound so as to compensate for any noise entering the cabin. All speaker grilles are visually highlighted by their illumination. The lighting corresponds to the system’s operating condition. BMW 6 Series Coupé 23 BMW ConnectedDrive Top selling point. Full-colour BMW Head-up Display for enhanced display of driving information and warnings. In touch with your world. SAFETY IN FULL COLOUR FOR THE FIRST TIME, FOR ADDED SAFETY: THE BMW HEAD-UP DISPLAY. Actual speed, selected cruise control speed and current speed limit – the Head-up Display ensures that important information is always in the driver’s fi eld of vision. With the introduction of the Head-up Display (optional) BMW has made a major contribution to road safety. For the new BMW 6 Series, this technology has been further refined. While previous versions only displayed the colours red, orange, yellow, and green, the new system can display the entire colour spectrum. The full-colour display makes information more realistic and pleasing to the eye as well as easier to read. Now even more alerts and information can optionally be projected into the driver’s immediate field of vision. The virtual image, which is about 18 x 10 cm in size, appears to hover at a distance of about 2 metres above the end of the bonnet and is easily legible in all lighting conditions. The BMW Head-up Display can be individually adjusted to the height of the driver. 24 Navigation system displays, too, can be projected into the driver’s field of vision via the BMW Head-up Display. Large-scale representations of intersections, lane recommendations and the relative positions of exits make it easy for drivers to fi nd the right way to go. Speed Limit Info (optional). Speed Limit Info automatically records data from speed limit signs plus additional information such as “when wet” or “10 PM to 6 AM”, and even dynamic indications from variable-message signs used in dynamic route guidance systems. All data are cross-checked against environmental parameters such as, “Is it raining?” “What time is it?” Lane Departure Warning (optional). The Lane Departure Warning system is activated whenever the driver inadvertently leaves the car’s current lane, i. e. when doing so without indicating. The system is operational at speeds of over 70 km/h. In addition to displaying a symbol in the optional BMW Head-up Display, it alerts the driver by making the steering wheel vibrate. BMW Night Vision (optional). BMW Night Vision doesn’t just detect people – it also identifies their position and the direction they are moving in. Based on the vehicle speed and current steering angle, the BMW Night Vision thermal imaging camera determines the potential risk of a collision, and, depending on the situation, triggers a warning which is either shown in the BMW Head-up Display (optional) or the instrument cluster. As a result, the driver can react in good time. Lane Change Warning (optional). The Lane Change Warning system helps avoid dangerous situations during lane change manoeuvres. At speeds above 50 km/h, radar sensors monitor the traffic behind the car and trigger the appearance of a symbol on the exterior mirror casing whenever any vehicle moves into a potentially dangerous position. If the driver signals his or her intention to overtake by using the indicator, this symbol will start blinking. It also triggers a vibration in the steering wheel to alert the driver. The system detects vehicles located in the driver's blind spot as well as those that are approaching at high speed. High-beam assistant (optional). The high-beam assistant recognises other vehicles early on and automatically switches to low beam if required. A camera sensor detects the headlight beams of oncoming vehicles from as far as 1,000 metres, and the light emitted by the taillights of cars in front from about 400 metres. The system ensures that the driver cannot forget to turn on the high beam, or switch to low beam in case of oncoming traffic. It also reacts to street lighting. Advanced eCall by BMW Assist (optional). Should an accident occur, the Advanced eCall system will immediately and automatically establish a telephone connection with the BMW call centre, and transmit the vehicle’s exact position, registration number and paintwork colour. In addition, data collected by the vehicle’s sensors will be analysed. Thus, the emergency services alerted by the BMW call centre will not only know within seconds where the accident took place and which vehicle was involved in it, but also how likely the occupants are to have suffered injuries. BMW 6 Series Coupé 25 CONVENIENCE INFOTAINMENT PERFECT SUPPORT IN ANY SITUATION. ENTERTAINED AND INFORMED. My BMW Remote App, by BMW Assist (optional). Trying to locate your vehicle in a crowded car park? Use your iPhone to flash the headlights, and you’ll spot your car immediately. And if you want, you can also use your iPhone to unlock or lock your BMW from a distance. The BMW Assist option allows you to activate Remote Services at your PC and then use them via the My BMW Remote App available from the Apple App Store. A so-called safety token safeguards communication between your iPhone and your BMW, preventing access by third parties. Park Assistant (optional). This driver assistance system makes parallel parking easier. When travelling at speeds below 35 km/h, the system measures any parking gaps the vehicle passes. When a big enough gap has been found, the Park Assistant will do the steering, while the driver continues to operate the accelerator and brake pedals – supported by acoustic signals and instructions in the Control Display. Networked navigation – GoogleTM services. The Google Send to Car function, optionally available with BMW Assist, allows drivers to quickly transfer addresses and routes they have identified in Google Maps to their vehicle. These can then be imported into the navigation system at the touch of a button. In addition, drivers can use Google Local Search (Google Maps), as part of BMW Online, to look for special destinations from within the vehicle. With the navigation system activated, drivers are shown current online images of their destination, enabling them to prepare for arrival at unfamiliar locations and access further information if required. The BMW Assist Information Service (optional). A touch of a button is all it takes to be connected to a friendly BMW call centre agent – through an in-car telephone unit working independently of the customer’s mobile phone. All queries will be answered during a one-on-one conversation, whether drivers are looking for a restaurant, pharmacy, cash machine, or flight information. BMW Assist is the only information service to send address data straight to the navigation system – up to ten different coordinates, including the associated telephone numbers. Apps (optional). You can now use apps in your BMW for the first time. Using optional apps, an iPhone and the free BMW Connected app from the Apple App Store, customers will never again be bored by the radio, and will always be able to stay in touch with their friends. The iDrive system allows them to tune into web radio stations from around the world and shows the latest status updates from personal Facebook or Twitter accounts on the Control Display. And this is only the beginning. Further functions and apps will follow. Bluetooth Office and Audio Streaming (optional). The optional Bluetooth interface enables the intelligent integration of selected business mobile phones. Customers can use the Bluetooth connection to conveniently show office functions such as e-mails, appointments, tasks or SMS messages on the Control Display, or have them read out aloud via the audio system, using the text-to-speech function. In addition, music from audio players or mobile phones situated anywhere inside the vehicle can easily be transmitted to and accessed from the HiFi system. USB audio interface with extended functions (optional). The USB audio interface provides numerous ways of integrating external devices into the new BMW 6 Series Coupé, including, for example, having the vehicle display show the album cover of a track currently being played by an external device, provided it is stored on this device. In addition, the iPod, the world’s most popular audio player, can be connected via the original iPod USB cable. BMW Online (optional). BMW Online provides drivers with a multitude of information on the chosen route and/or destination. In addition to weather reports for the vehicle’s current location, destination, or any place in Europe, customers can now access graphics with up-to-date precipitation data for any location in Germany. BMW Online also includes various mobile office functions such as e-mail, address book, information on car parks and Google Local Search. Personalised news on politics, business, sports and entertainment are directly accessible from within the vehicle. The three pillars of BMW ConnectedDrive. Safety. Convenience. THE DREAM COUPÉ. 536.1$"3% 5PQTFMMJOHQPJOUT Porsche 911 Carrera Coupé The current Porsche 911 Carrera had a small facelift in July 2008 (cosmetic changes and engines with direct injection and increased power). A successor model, with the wheelbase increased by about 10 cm and a lower body, is expected in early 2012. The Porsche is an evergreen fully committed to sportiness, at the cost of space and ride comfort. Auto Zeitung in its 13/2010 issue for example wrote: “Despite its adaptive dampers, the Porsche quite rudely transmits bumps from expansion joints to the interior, especially via the rear axle.” Mercedes-Benz CL 500 The Mercedes-Benz CL 500 had a facelift in September 2010, which updated its technology to a more appropriate level. The re-engineered successor model, which will come with new technology features and reduced weight, is not expected before 2013. The Mercedes-Benz CL 500 has little sporting ambition. Auto Zeitung for example wrote in its 24/2010 issue: “This set-up does not allow too much sporting ambition. The ABC (Active Body Control) chassis actively tries to minimise body roll in fast bends, but this two-tonne vehicle never really makes you feel connected to the road, a fact that is partly due to its indirect steering.” 5IFOFX#.84FSJFT$PVQ© )FSFѳTIPXZPVTDPSFJOTBMFTUBMLT #SFBUIUBLJOHBFTUIFUJDTEZOBNJD QSPQPSUJPOTBOFMPOHBUFEBOEFMFHBOUTIBQF XJUIBQFSGFDUDPVQ©SPPꗆJOF 5IF"EBQUJWF-&%)FBEMJHIUTGPSUIFꗅSTUUJNF UIFMPXBOEIJHICFBNTBSFFOUJSFMZCBTFEPO JOOPWBUJWF-&%UFDIOPMPHZ #.8&GꗅDJFOU%ZOBNJDTGPSVOBMMPZFEESJWJOH FOKPZNFOUUISPVHIJODPNQBSBCMFEZOBNJDT BOEMPXGVFMDPOTVNQUJPO &YDMVTJWFJOUFSJPSXJUIOFXJOOPWBUJWF GFBUVSFTFMFHBOUESJWFSPSJFOUBUJPOBOEUPQ RVBMJUZNBUFSJBMT 'VMMDPMPVS#.8)FBEVQ%JTQMBZGPS FOIBODFEEJTQMBZPGESJWJOHJOGPSNBUJPOBOE XBSOJOHT 5IFESFBNDBSBNPOHDPVQ©T Jaguar XK Coupé The Jaguar XK Coupé was facelifted in April 2009, with minor updates to its looks and interior. The engines became significantly more powerful thanks to a switch to direct injection. Despite major improvements in technology and workmanship, the Jaguar coupé stills suffers from quite a few drawbacks, as enumerated by Auto Zeitung in its 19/2009 issue: “When it comes to the details, there are quite a few weaknesses, both in terms of workmanship and ergonomics.” Jaguar is not viewed as being at the same level as BMW, as stated by Auto Bild on 19 March 2007 in a comparison against the BMW 650i: “While the Bavarian lion sits on the throne of a premium brand enjoying worldwide renown, the formerly proud Jaguar now sulks in the corner along with other fringe players.” 28 BMW 6 Series Coupé 31 COMPETITORS Exterior BMW 6 Series Coupé The BMW 6 Series Coupé radiates exceptional elegance and dynamism, even when standing still. A successor model, with the wheelbase increased by about 10 cm and a lower body, is expected in early 2012. The Porsche is an evergreen fully committed to sportiness, at the cost of space and ride comfort. Auto Zeitung in its 13/2010 issue for example wrote: “Despite its adaptive dampers, the Porsche quite rudely transmits bumps from expansion joints to the interior, especially via the rear axle.” Classic rear-engined sports car silhouette. High brand recognition value. Rather delicate looks. Retractable rear wing. Traditional round headlights and LED taillights. – – – – Matter-of-fact cockpit design. Limited space. The ABC (Active Body Control) chassis actively tries to minimise body roll in fast bends, but this two-tonne vehicle never really makes you feel connected to the road, a fact that is partly due to its indirect steering.” – Bulky dimensions limit dynamic appeal. – Rear with an untypical design for the brand, with conspicuous reversing lights on either side of the number plate. – Obtrusively widened wheel arches. – Fully retractable side windows without B-pillar. – Sporting appeal only with optional AMG package. – LED-based daytime running lights, parking lights and indicators. – Relatively generous amount of space on all seats. – A real four-seater. – Comfortable seats with integrated seat belts, seat ventilation (optional), dynamic multi-contour seats with massage function (optional). – Easy-entry function for steering column when entering or exiting the vehicle. – Old-fashioned cockpit design that lacks sporting appeal. – Large boot with 490-litre capacity. – Good functionality, 8" screen for navigation system. – Mercedes-Benz BlueEfficiency technology only available for the CL 500. – New 4.7-litre V8 bi-turbo direct injection engine, with 320 kW/435 hp and 9.7 l/100 km fuel consumption in the Mercedes-Benz CL 500 BlueEfficiency. – Choice between four engines including two AMG units. – Only competitor to offer V12 engines, but without direct injection and with high fuel consumption. – 7-speed automatic transmission for V8 engines; 5-speed automatic transmission for V12 engines. – Comfortable suspension set-up. – ABC (Active Body Control) chassis with body roll compensation. – Sluggish, not very dynamic handling. – Rear-wheel drive; all-wheel drive optional for CL 500 BlueEfficiency with 45 : 55 power split. – Airmatic pneumatic suspension for all-wheel drive, but without ABC chassis. – Optional direct steering with variable steering ratio. – The most important technology features are available (mostly as options). – Comand multimedia system with hard disk navigation (optional), 4 GB music register (optional), voice control (optional) and media interface; 8" display with SplitView technology. – Night View Assist Plus with pedestrian detection (optional). – Intelligent Light System (optional). – Intelligent cruise control with distance control, Lane-Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist (optional). – No in-car Internet access. – Bluetooth interface (optional), TV tuner (optional). – – – – – – – – – – – Pleasing cockpit design with straight lines and pulsating pop-up transmission selector. – 2+2-seater, with rear seats only suitable for children. – Comfortable front seats with cooling function (optional). – Patchy material quality. – Inferior ergonomics. – Operating the low-positioned 7" touchscreen is cumbersome. – Small boot with 330-litre capacity. – No technology package to lower fuel consumption. – Only two 5-litre V8 engines with an output of 283 kW/385 hp or 375 kW/510 hp. – Both engines with direct injection. – Comparatively low body weight makes for adequate fuel consumption. – Comfortable 6-speed automatic transmission; abrupt gear changes in sports mode. – Average vehicle dynamics. – Active chassis control (Adaptive Dynamics System). – Rear-wheel drive; not available with all-wheel drive. – Comfortable ride overall, consistent with the car’s personality. – Large rims (up to 20") make for limited comfort at slow speeds. – Only average agility. – Precise steering. – Average technology level. – DVD navigation system, 7", as standard; Music Interface (optional); DAB radio (optional). – Cumbersome operation of many functions via touchscreen display. – Bowers & Wilkins sound system; LED-taillights. – Adaptive cruise control (optional). – No in-car Internet access. – Limited brand recognition value due to not very distinctive design – Patchy material quality in the interior – Small boot – Handling lacks sporting ability – Cumbersome operation using touchscreen display – Average ergonomics – Limited engine range – No Internet access Jaguar XK Coupé The Jaguar XK Coupé was facelifted in April 2009, with minor updates to its looks and interior. The engines became significantly more powerful thanks to a switch to direct injection. Despite major improvements in technology and workmanship, the Jaguar coupé stills suffers from quite a few drawbacks, as enumerated by Auto Zeitung in its 19/2009 issue: “When it comes to the details, there are quite a few weaknesses, both in terms of workmanship and ergonomics.” Jaguar is not viewed as being at the same level as BMW, as stated by Auto Bild on 19 March 2007 in a comparison against the BMW 650i: “While the Bavarian lion sits on the throne of a premium brand enjoying worldwide renown, the formerly proud Jaguar now sulks in the corner along with other fringe players.” 28 Sports coupé looks. Elongated bonnet and flat rear. Somewhat sober, unemotive design. “Japanese-style” front lowers brand recognition value and on-road prestige. – Only car in the segment to come with an aluminium body. Bulky vehicle dimensions Design lacks sporting appeal Has been on the market for a long time Clinical interior ambience Poor agility and driving dynamics BlueEfficiency package only available for one engine – No Internet access Technical data for BMW 6 Series Coupé and competitors. i Coupé Porsche Carrera Coupé In-line// V// Boxer// V// V// , , , , , ./. ./. ./. ./. ./RON ./RON ./RON ./RON -speed automatic -speed automatic -speed manual -speed automatic -speed automatic RWD RWD RWD RWD RWD Drive type Max. output/speed kW (hp) / rpm () / , () / , () / , () / , () / , Max. torque/speed Nm / rpm /,–, /,–, /, /,–, /, . . . . . i Coupé i Coupé Porsche Carrera Coupé Mercedes-Benz CL Jaguar XK Coupé Specific output kW/l Performance Acceleration – km/h Top speed (limited) sec . . . . . km/h i Coupé i Coupé Porsche Carrera Coupé Mercedes-Benz CL Jaguar XK Coupé .
