In positions in chemical pest control, warehousing, catalogue/online order distribution centers,
factories, fisheries, manufacturing, moving companies and the construction sector
Positions with staffing agencies, unless the placements meet the following three criteria:
◦ Participants must be employees of and paid by the staffing agencies
◦ Staffing agencies must provide full-time, primary, on-site supervision of the participants
◦ Staffing agencies must effectively control the work sites e.g. have hands-on management
responsibility for the participants
Any position that Janus International deems as non-seasonable/non temporary in accordance with
the J-1 Work & Travel program Regulations. The typical Summer Work Travel job is in a
seasonal/resort area in a seasonal business. Janus International may request additional
documentation to prove the seasonal and temporary nature of a self placement location.
Janus International reserves the right to deny approval of any self placed job placement that is
deemed by Janus International as unsuitable for the Work & Travel program, inconsistent with the
cultural exchange goals of the program, or a risk to the J-1 participant's health, safety and welfare.
Janus International does not outline prohibited job placement areas for J-1 students, although in the best
interest of the safety and welfare of our participants, we do pay extra attention and verification to jobs in the
areas below. Self Placed jobs in one of the areas listed below may not be approved and will require extra
vetting procedures. Also, these locations most likely will not be approved by Janus International if J1 student
decides to relocate while in the U.S. on J1 visa:
• New York City, Chicago, Miami, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco or any big metropolis which
does not meet the seasonality requirement of the regulations or where the price of living is high and
suitable affordable housing is unavailable
• Florida Panhandle and the Gulf Shores area, including but not limited to Panama City, Mobile,
Biloxi…
• North Dakota
• Martha’s Vineyard, Outer Banks, Hamptons, Hilton Head Island, and other small beach communities
with very limited affordable housing available and challenges in confirming job details such as
transportation, work hours, employment conditions, etc.
