What is a Cayo?
A cay (also spelled key, but both are
pronounced alike as “key”) is a small, low island
consisting mostly of sand or coral. The word is
used almost exclusively in the Caribbean. Sand
cays are formed when tidal action, wind and
sea birds deposit, over a long period of time,
coral debris and sand onto reef flats.

hen famous U.S. writer Ernest
Hemingway described Cayo
Guillermo in his book Islands in the
Stream as “green and promising” he was
aware of how much beauty lay hidden
in that small islet to the north of Cuba,
which today forms part of one of its most
important tourist destinations: Jardines
del Rey.
Cayo Guillermo has an extension of 13
square kilometers. It is surrounded by
a shiny green-blue sea and stands out
for its natural vegetation and a wellconserved fauna and flora, closely linked
to the hotel installations.
The six kilometers of beautiful coralline
and fine sandy beaches reinforce the
values of tropical nature’s perfect work.
In this environment, Playa Pilar catches
visitors’ attention since it is one of the
island’s most beautiful beaches, where
the Caribbean’s highest sand dune is
located at 15 meters above sea level.

beach, and beautiful underwater seascapes. A system
of channels becomes a true aquatic labyrinth between
the keys, while offering a huge potential for observation
programs and nautical activities. For those visiting the
area, Ensenachos boasts one of the best beaches, although

to a maximum of 600 rooms to prevent damaging the
environment. The stronghold in the development of the
local leisure industry is Cayo Santa María, where there is
a hotel, and there exists an investment project to build a

a runway on Cayo Las Brujas to receive small- and mediumsize planes. Cayo Santa María is 13 kilometers long and 2
kilometers wide, has 11 kilometers of excellent beaches
and is linked to the big island by a causeway on the sea.
