FESTIVALS IN THE USA
REMEMBER
• There are no national holidays in the
USA. Each state has the right to decide
about its own holiday. Most states
celebrate the federal public holidays.
Let´s find out more information about
some of them
CHRISTMAS
• Santa Claus is pictured as a cheerful fat man with long
white beard and dressed in a red suit
• Children believe that he lives at the North Pole where he
makes toys for good children during a year
• There is a tradition of leaving a glass of milk and
chocolate cookies for his reindeer Rudolph
• The Americans decorate their Christmas tree at home
and they also decorate their houses with wreaths and
electric coloured lights
• Christmas in the USA is not a typical family holiday like in
our country. The Americans invite friends for dinner and
often give parties at Christmas
EASTER
• ´Most Americans spend Easter with the family
• The adults give children dyed eggs and sweets
• In some families they organize an egg hunt – the
adults hide the eggs somewhere in the house or
garden and children look for them
• Also the President has an annual Easter egg hunt on
the lawn around the White House
• The don´t know anything about „pomlázka“
THANKSGIVING DAY
• It is celebrated on the last Thursday in November
• It is a feast of giving thanks to God
• It remembers the first settlers – Pilgrim Fathers who came from
England to the USA in 1620. After a bad year they shared their
first harvest with Native Americans in 1621
• The whole family gathers together and enjoys a traditional
dinner – roast turkey and apple or pumpkin pie
• This is the day of gifts, charities and food for poor people
INDEPENDENCE DAY
• It is celebrated on July 4th
• This day commemorates the signing the Declaration
of Independence in 1776 and the Americans take
this day as the birthday of the USA
• Each city has its own ceremony and parades, band
concerts and fireworks
LABOUR DAY
• It is celebrated on the first Monday
in September
• It honours all the working people
• It is celebrated by a day of rest
COLUMBUS DAY
• It is celebrated on the second Monday in
October
• It is an anniversary of the discovery of
America by Christopher Columbus on
October 12th, 1492
VALENTINE´S DAY
• It is celebrated on February 14th
• It is the day of all lovers that is why
many things are in a red colour.
• They send loving postcards to each
other
HALLOWEEN
• It is celebrated on the last day of October
• It is a celebration of witches, ghosts and goblins
• Children dress up in funny or ghostly costumes and knock at
neigbours´ door. After shouting „Trick or Treat!“ they get gifts or
candy
• Many homes are decorated by jack-o´-lanterns = pumpkins
with horrible faces
