NorthEast Kansas Lutheran Church Partnership *LCMS* JUNE From the Pen of the Pastor Remember and Forget Not Today, I and a few men from the partnership were talking about poor memories. (Perhaps this article will refresh their ...Come to think of it, they may not even remember our conversation. (Eldon, Dennis and Kurt …I’m just kidding!) Anyway, we all agreed life would be easier if we could remember the names of people we have met, things we have heard and things our wives asked us to do. I suppose that is why students have class schedules, teachers have their records books and Shelley and Sue each keep my calendar - we need daily reminders at home and at work to keep us on schedule. Of course, not everything is important enough to remember. We really don’t need those incessant jingles that keep coming back into our minds, you know the ones I’m talking about…ones like “I’d like to buy the world a coke and keep it company”…or… ‘ two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun’...and of course my favorite; the one hardest to get out of my head after I hear it…"My Bologna Has a First Name, its O.S.C. A. R., and my bologna has a second name, its M.E.Y.E.R." Oh, I love to eat it every day, and if you ask me why I’ll say… its cause Oscar Meyer has a way with B.O.L.O.G.N.A. However, despite all the nonsense we would rather not remember, there are certainly some things that are too important to forget. One such thing is prayer. It’s relatively easy to remember to do that when we are confronted with a crisis and feel an immediate need for the Lord’s strength, comfort or wisdom. The sad thing is, once the crisis passes, we tend to ‘forget’ to pray. We forget to offer God all praise, honor and glory. We don’t mean too; but, we do. At the time of affliction we were certain we’d be ever grateful to Him for helping us through it. But, when it was over….we forgot. Dear friends, it doesn’t make it right, but we’re not the first generation of Christians to do that. God said in Deuteronomy, “Remember and forget not the Lord your God.” (8:18) He said similar things in other places. In Exodus He said to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. He said through the Psalmist, “Do not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments.” (78:7). continued to next page Office Address: 613 S. First St. Hiawatha, KS 66434 785-742-3995 Continued from page 1 Such admonitions were written at different times and in different places because the problem was widespread. Since Scripture’s teachings are timeless, we know that every generation suffers the same problem and is in need of being reminded to ‘remember and not forget.’ But how are we to best remember? How are we ‘not’ to forget? Maybe Joshua can help. In ancient times, when Joshua led the people of Israel across the Jordan River into the promised land, God had him have one man from each tribe take a stone from the very spot in the midst of the river Jordan where the priests stood firm while the people passed over and then carry those stones to the Gilgal side of the river, where Joshua set them up as a memorial to the mercy of God. (Chapter 4) The reason was clear…God established them as a memorial of His divine intervention and deliverance. Then He instructed them that when their children saw these stones and asked what they meant, they were to then share their testimony with them, that future generations would know what God had done for them. Perhaps we can do a similar thing with our children, by taking them to Church and showing them the stones God’s house is built on and reminding them these stones too were piled up by people called to remember their Lord’s promises and deliverance…these stones are our reminder of God’s love and mercy…these stones signify the place God has ordained that His gifts of Word and Sacrament be given to His people. Yes, these stones signify God’s faithfulness and eternal love for us. Let us ‘remember and forget not!’ to share that news whenever and wherever we can. Yours In Christ, Pastor Mike BIBLE STUDIES Pastor Dunaway is having a Bible Study on Lutheranism 101. This will be held at Zion Lutheran in Hiawatha on Sunday afternoons starting at 1:30. Please plan to join us! Vicar Bob is leading a Bible Study on Wednesday mornings at 10:00am. This is held at Zion. All are welcome! BIBLE STUDIES The following Bible Studies are available each week: 9:15am Sunday @Zion 9:15am Sunday @First 10:00am Wednesday @Zion 1:30pm Sunday @Zion FROM THE VICAR: Listen to Understand So many times we extend a greeting to someone as part of a social ritual. “How are you doing?” “Good morning” or “What’s up?” It’s the polite and right thing to do to acknowledge the other person, begin a light conversation, or provide an opening to share something meaningful or significant. It is particularly frustrating when we are trying to communicate something of great value or importance to someone and they either are not listening or they respond with an unsolicited solution. I have heard it said that “We need to listen to understand, not respond.” WOW!!! Fifty-nine years living upon this earth and this important truth was just recently given to me: Listen to understand. Yet, that is easily said but hard to do! If we could only talk to someone who would hear us, listen to our problems, AND understand the issues. That is a lot to ask of a spouse, parent, child, sibling or friend. Yet we do know someone who has this very real and precious ability: God has always been there listening and understanding us in all times, all places and all things. Yet, have our conversations with God been ritualistic in times of calm, doubting in times of trial, or accusing in times of tribulation? Have we put conditions in place that dictate when, where and why we will pray? Let us take the focus off of ourselves and place it squarely where it needs to be: God. God is the One who never slumbers nor sleeps, who never grows weary or faint. He is the One who faithfully and lovingly hears the cries of His holy ones and answers them according to His good and gracious will. He alone understands our needs, our fears, our hopes and our faith. He is never distracted with the symptoms of our problems that we offer up in our prayers but intimately knows the basis of our spiritual and physical needs. When the Israelites were crying out for freedom from their Egyptian slave masters God knew their real need was to be freed from sin, death and the power of the devil. When they cried out that they preferred the fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic supplied by their Egyptian oppressors to the manna that He provided He understood their real need was to be fed by every word that comes from the mouth of God: the Christ. When they cried “Hosanna, Son of David” at His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, desiring freedom from their Roman oppressors Jesus understood their real need was freedom from the wages of their sin that would be paid for with His innocent suffering and death upon the cursed tree. When they were cut to the heart by Peter’s sermon on Pentecost and asked “Brothers, what shall we do” hoping to avoid guilt for Christ’s death God understood their real need was to embrace Christ’s death AND resurrection that held for them the forgiveness of sin. God consistently demonstrates that He listens to the cries of His people and understands what they truly need for body, soul and all things. God comes to us this very day with mercies anew because He listens and understands. He gives us the beneficial things we need for body, soul and all our possessions for His glory and our good. He gives us His Spirit that we would truly listen to His Word and understand and do His will: repent of our sins, believe in Jesus, proclaim the Gospel and make disciples of all nations. He gives us His Spirit that we would listen to our spouse, children, parents, siblings, friends and neighbors and understand their needs of body, spirit and all things. He gives us His Spirit that we would loving do His will and perform the work He has given us this day. May the LORD who has begun this good work create in us a clean heart that listens to God’s good and gracious answers to our prayers. May He renew a right spirit within us that understands He desires all our conversations with Him and our neighbor would be in Spirit and truth. May He fill us with His Spirit that we too would listen and understand as He does and do nothing ritualistically but all things in the love of Christ Jesus. PAUL LUTHERAN Altar Committee for June: Rosalie Mellenbruch, Carolyn Schneider, Galen Meyer Zion Lutheran Women’s Missionary League The Zion Lutheran Women’s Missionary League held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 7:00pm. Vicar Bruggeman led a devotion from his entry in the May newsletter on the topic of being still before God based on Psalm 46. Before we start our day, we should listen to what the Holy Spirit may be telling us about the spiritual battlefield we will be facing that day, and as He is equipping us to be brave and courageous as we go forward. Sharon Lowe, substituting for Carol Walter, led Carol’s Bible study, “I Hate to Wait”. Many verses in the Psalms refer to David’s waiting to see God’s guidance. In doing so, he developed hope and trust in the Lord. Waiting instills courage and strength in us giving us “eagles wings”. Further, God is waiting for us to call on Him for the blessings we need. The business meeting followed with 5 members and one guest, Vicar Bruggeman, attending. Minutes of the April meeting were read and approved. Diane Davis gave the financial report. It was filed for audit. Communications: Traci Rahe’s card thanking the LWML for its support of her mission work was read. Committee Reports: Chancel Workers: Anne Arnesen, Debbie Reschke, Donna Gormley. Caring Service Greeters: June 5 & 12 Richard and Barb Shefferd, June 19 & 26 Clarence & Esther Middendorf. Christian Life: Judy Clay reminded us to pray for the tornado victims. Bible Study Topic: Shelley Dunaway Old Business: Lela Middendorf reported about 300 persons attended the Kansas District Convention in Manhattan. Projects suggested included making dresses and baby gowns for overseas missions. Brenda Piester was elected the new president. New Business: Cards will be back on the rack for sale at 50 cents each. Boxes may be ordered from the catalog. Fifth Sundays will be Partnership events with rolls and coffee provided. We will be serving in July. Anne Arnesen is using plastic bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. She would appreciate having any bags we can supply. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned with Lela reading “Peek-a-Boo, I See You”. We can hide from others, but we cannot hide from God. It’s best to confess our sings and receive God’s forgiveness. Respectfully submitted, Sharon Lowe, Secretary First Lutheran LWML The May 4, 2016 meeting of First Lutheran LWML opened with a devotion from Brenda Meyer quoting from Rev. Dr. Fockenscher of the many women of the Bible. Brenda led the Bible study taken from Lutheran Women’s Quarterly, Spring 2016 “He Adores You” telling of the love to all from our Lord and Savior. With the absence of our President, Martha Pearson, each officer filled in with their reports. Ruth Swart, Secretary, called the roll with 8 answering with their favorite May flower. Ruth Swart read the minutes of the April meeting with one correction. Evelyn Goodman made the motion for the money go to Michael Ersland fund instead of Katy Steiner. Kay Holden, Co-treasurer, read the treasurer’s report as submitted by Carole Feek,, and collected mites and dues. Brenda gave a report of the Kansas District LWML convention that she attended on April 15-17, 2016 in Manhattan, Kansas. The theme was “For Such a Time as This” taken from Ephesians 2:10. Brenda said it was very “uplifting”. Kathy and Karen K. told of the Preschool serving a supper on June 9, 2016 to the “Bike Across Kansas” group and would appreciate funds, pies and prayers from our LWML. The BAK group will be spending the night at the Sabetha school. Kathy made a motion to give $100, 2nd by Brenda, motion passed. There will be a sign up sheet for pies. Thanks to Martha and daughters for the beautiful petunias in the outdoor planter. Ruth, hostess, served soda cracker pie with mixed nuts, miniature candy bars and coffee. The next meeting will be June 3, 2016 with LaVonne Jaros as hostess and Carole will lead the Bible Study. Ruth P. Swart, Secretary ST. PAUL DORCAS St. Paul Dorcas met May 4th at 7:00pm on the main floor of the church. President Karen Bauman opened the meeting with all saying the LWML Pledge. Sarah Kleopfer chose for the Bible Study a topic entitled, “The Private Line”. We don’t have party lines anymore butt we still get a busy signal, wrong number, high phone bills, etc. But each of us own a private line to the Greatest Listener of all time. This phone line is called PRAYER. We shared thoughts from Bible verses on why, when, and how we should pray. Prayer is simply talking to God. Cindy Manche and Kathy Heiniger reported on the District Convention that they attended in Manhattan. Roll call was answered by 11 members. Minutes of the April meeting were read and approved. The Treasurer’s report was given. Church cleaning is nearly finished. Karen thanked all those who helped. Rosalie Mellenbruch will take care of the Lutherans for Life display on Mother’s Day. Details for the May 22nd graduation reception were eviewed and the May 29th Joint Partnership Fifth Sunday service at St. Paul was discussed. Other projects—Karen Bauman will use her Thrivent seed money to purchase fleece for nursing home blankets. Rosalie reported that she has used her Thrivent seed money to purchase two rolls of mission batting. The birthday song was sung for Cindy Manche. The free will offering was collected and the business meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer. Kathy and Cindy served a lemon dessert with mixed nuts, coffee, tea and water. We then began sorting the banners from the banner cabinet and those that are stored in the vestry. As storage for the banners is becoming a problem, we removed those that have served their purpose. It was a difficult job as each banner brought back memories. Our next meeting will be on June 1st at 7:00pm. Topic leader will be Cindy Manche. Hostesses are Leslie Brockhoff and Linda Duesing. Rosalie Mellenbruch, Secretary IMMANUEL LUTHERAN DORCAS The Immanuel Lutheran Dorcas met May 17, 2016, at the Fairview Community Center with Shelley Dunaway as hostess. Doris Rice led the devotions. Scripture was Hebrews 11:12-20 & 23-25. She read “Tell Me Quickly, I’m Dying.” She closed devotions with the Lord’s Prayer. Sue Brockhoff, President, called the meeting to order. Roll call was answered by five members. Minutes of the April meeting were read. The Treasurer’s Report was given by Doris Rice, Treasurer. Shelley Dunaway presented a bill for Family Night expenses, and Sue Brockhoff presented a bill for the funeral dinner. Doris Rice moved these bills be allowed. The motion was seconded and it carried. Doris announced that we had received a check from the Hanrahan family. Sue thanked everyone for the food and helping at the funeral dinner. We were reminded that we are going to visit Rose Marie Hinde in Topeka for our June meeting. We will meet at 10:00am at the Community Center. Offering was taken. As there was no further business, Sue adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be June 14 in Topeka with Rose Marie Hinde as hostess. Shelley served delicious refreshments during the social hour. Joyce Brockhoff, Reporter ST. PAUL PRESCHOOL The St Paul Lutheran Pre-School students concluded their studies this year with an exploration of our universe. Our studies also included the stars and galaxies beyond our universe. Our study of chemical reactions culminated in the launching of rockets from the north parking lot of the church. It is amazing that God both sustains the entire creation and sustains us with every good and needful thing. The parents and students traveled to the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha on Friday, 20 May. It gave students the opportunity to experience the animals and birds that they had studied during the year. It also gave them an opportunity to see and hear the animals and birds firsthand with their parents and classmates. With much joy and some sadness the Pre-School celebrated the graduation of its students after the Holy Trinity – Graduation Service on Sunday, 22 May 2016. The graduation gave the members of St Paul Lutheran the opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of our students, the hard work of their parents, and the love and dedication of their teacher-Regina Rygaard. Submitted by Vicar Bob Bruggeman FIRST PRESCHOOL Another school year has come to a close. We were busy reviewing things we learned all year and practicing for our final graduation program. The church was filled to enjoy our songs and watch thirteen pupils receive their diploma’s and look forward to going to kindergarten. During this month we heard the story of Daniel in the lion’s den, the story of creation, and stories about how special we are to God. The older classes enjoyed field trips to Van’s Electric in Fairview and a farm field trip to Kyle and Peggy Strahm’s farm. They enjoyed the trailer ride and swinging from the rope in the hay mound. We wish everyone a wonderful summer with lots of fun with friends and family. My thanks to everyone who have supported this program with donations and prayers. To God be the glory.
