Poplar Creek Library—
Streamwood
The library has seen many changes this past year and the Library Board and staff are proud of these accomplishments and want to share them with you.
We have provided 3,579 hours of service at the Main and 2,652 at the Branch.
There was a combined total of 195,402 visits last year
The library provided 6,150 scheduled public service hours for your convenience.
514,267 materials were loaned out
We upgraded the website for easier use and to provide many more options.
We upgraded our technology to include the Cloud, Facebook, Twitter, Four Square, Fre-gal and many other
social media sites.
The Branch re-opening is another huge compliment to the library. Bigger, re-designed for maximum space
usage and is totally ADA compliant. Users in Hanover Park have expressed how pleased they are with the
facility now open.
An ADA grant of $50,000 was awarded to Poplar Creek and aided with the construction costs.
Programming has increased and offered a wider variety. The library was awarded a $1500 grant from the
National Endowment of the Arts for the recent American Music program.
Workshops to help the unemployed are available as often as possible. Special programs about resume
writing, cover letters and interviewing also are offered.
The VITA (volunteer income tax assistance) program serves hundreds of people each year. Service to the
elderly, disabled or those new to the country is among our most appreciated services.
New data bases are always being reviewed and added to our computers. We also have i-pads available for
public use within the library.
The library will continue to go forward in every phase of library service. Watch for new technologies, collections and programming in 2014.
Poplar Creek is held in high regard by the library community and we hope by all our members.
Have a safe, prosperous and healthy new year and remember to visit us often!

Irish Heritage
Singers
Everyone has a bit of the Irish in them this time of year. The music
is lively and sure to put you in an Irish frame of mind!
Classics will be performed as well as newer songs. Danny Boy will
surely be on the performance list.
This large group has been singing together since 1985. This group is
one of the very few Irish-American choral ensembles in the United
States.
Their repertoire includes Irish ballads and folk songs, contemporary
settings of traditional Irish folk songs, chart-toppers by contemporary
Irish singers with a blend of folk melodies and classical motifs.
Their performances have included numerous fine art series, religious
events, competitive festivals as far away as Sligo, Ireland. The
Chicago Theater and the Arcadia Theater have been venues as well
for this accomplished group.
Be sure to take advantage of their presence in our community.
Brighten up your St. Patrick’s Day by joining us. A great time will
be had by all!
Registration is required at 630.483.4910.
Events made possible, in part, by the Created Equal Grant.
The Abolitionists (movie)
The abolitionists tore the nation apart in order to create a more perfect union.
Men and women, black and white, Northerners and Southerners, poor and
wealthy--these passionate anti-slavery activists fought body and soul in the
most important civil rights crusade in American history. What began as a pacifist movement fueled by persuasion and prayer became a fiery and furious
struggle that forever changed the nation. Bringing to life the intertwined stories of Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimké, Harriet
Beecher Stowe, and John Brown.
