The Educator’s New Clothes
I’m going to talk about new technology and its relevance to education. I will argue
that the case for radically overhauling our education systems through the mass
introduction of digital devices into classrooms is unconvincing, and that successful
teaching will always be more about the pupil–teacher interface than the digital
interface. However, we can undoubtedly use technology to support what is already
good teaching practice. Using examples from New Maturita Solutions (Falla & Davies,
2012, OUP), I’ll discuss how best to exploit currently available digital resources.
Tim Falla graduated from Oxford University with a B.A. Honours degree in Modern Languages (French and
German). He took a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in English for Speakers of Other Languages at
London University and taught in Japan, the UK, Spain and Saudi Arabia. From 1988 to 1992 he was an editor in
the ELT Division of Oxford University Press. Since then he has worked as a freelance author. His publications
with Oxford University Press include Solutions, FCE Result, Steps in English, Switch and Spotlight (with
Paul A. Davies), Thumbs Up! (with Norman Whitney), Headway Beginner Workbook and Headway Advanced
Workbook.

Assessing oral communication skills
Most teachers nowadays use communicative approaches in the classroom but
assessment of oral proficiencies is easily overlooked in favor of traditional, written
assessment, such as tests, quizzes and essays. Based on the Common European
Framework of Reference’s (CEFR) Oral Assessment Criteria, we will explore various
ways of formally and informally assessing oral proficiency in the classroom on an
on-going basis. Various types of oral practice activities and tasks will be explored.
Leading participants to oral assessment, this will be a hands-on session, starting
from aims and objectives to activities and tasks. Different assessment forms will
be discussed and participants will be able to leave with concrete suggestions for
assessment of oral communication skills.
Dr. Beata Schmid has been the Senior Vice President at EF International Centers for more than twenty
years. Her academic background is in Linguistics; she has an M.A. and a Ph.D. from Brown University in
the USA. At EF, she is responsible for the implementation of all aspects of the academic language training
programs, including English, French, Spanish, German and Italian. This includes oversight of faculty,
textbooks, curriculum design, instructional software, teacher training, academic publicity materials and
frequent representation at international conferences. She is also the accreditation coordinator for EF ILC
and has authored and/or edited textbooks in American and British English, French and German. One of
her favorite areas is teacher training at EF and around the world. Other areas of academic interest are
curriculum development, second language learning and language acquisition. She is also the Past President
of EnglishUSA, formerly known as AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs, and has
a strong interest in accreditation and other regulatory compliance. Before coming to EF, she worked as
a language teacher in university and other settings, as well as in publishing. In her spare time, she enjoys
gardening, cooking and singing in a choir, as well as spending time with friends and family.

Chování a vzdělávací výsledky jsou těsně propojené. Jestliže se student věnuje při
vyučování jiným aktivitám, doma se nepřipravuje, dokonce nechodí do školy, je
velmi pravděpodobné, že budou slabší i jeho výsledky a současně se bude fakticky
snižovat motivace ke studiu. Ze strany učitele může studijní morálku studentů
podpořit dobré zvládnutí managementu třídy, tedy řemeslné stránky profese.
Přednáška se bude věnovat praktickým aspektům zvyšování efektivity vyučování
u studentů středních škol zejména prostřednictvím managementu třídy.
PhDr. Václav Mertin, dětský psycholog, 38 let poradenské praxe s dětmi a dospívajícími. Odborný asistent
na katedře psychologie Filozofické fakulty Karlovy univerzity v Praze – vyučované předměty pedagogická
psychologie, školní psychologie. Mezi odborné zájmy patří specifické poruchy učení a chování, domácí
vzdělávání, porozvodová péče o děti. Bohatá publikační aktivita pro učitele (knihy Výchovné poradenství,
Hry pomáhají s problémy, Metody a postupy poznávání žáka, Problémy s chováním ve škole – jak na ně) i pro
rodiče (Ze zkušeností dětského psychologa, Výchovné maličkosti, Výchova bez trestů). V současné době
připravuje monografii s pracovním názvem Management třídy.

Z redakce až na katedru – jak se
dělá výukový časopis
Jak dlouho trvá vyrobit článek? Kdo odpovídá za kvalitu textu? Odkud jsou všechny
ty fotky? Na tyto a další otázky si odpovíme během krátké prezentace o tom, jak
se píší anglické časopisy Bridge a Gate. Společně se podíváme na proces výroby
článků, jejich editace a korektury, „zalamování“ u grafiků, přidávání ilustrací,
finální korektury, tiskárnu a závěrečnou distribuci až k vám do kabinetu. Možná
budete překvapení, co všechno se za tím skrývá!
Po ukončení studia dějepisu a anglického jazyka pro střední školy na Pedagogické fakultě Univerzity Karlovy
působil Josef Šorm jako učitel anglického jazyka na Základní škole v Jinonicích a Arcibiskupském gymnáziu
v Praze. Od srpna 2009 pracuje pro Bridge Publishing House, mimo jiné jako editor v oblíbených časopisech
Bridge a Gate. Velmi se zajímá o moderní technologie a zabývá se také vytvářením interaktivních doplňků
pro oba časopisy.
