Other districts of Ostrava well worth a visit are Přívoz, which
boasts some beautiful examples of the local variant of Art Nouveau
(known as the Secession style), or Hrabůvka with its “Jubilee”

Ostrava’s Vítkovice district is closely associated with the city’s
industrial boom years. The massive influx of employees at the
Vítkovice Ironworks led the company to build a number of housing
schemes for workers, alongside civic amenities, a church and a
town hall. All these buildings share a distinctive architectural style
featuring typical red brick facades.

Ostrava’s western suburb of Poruba offers a fascinating contrast to
the city centre, boasting a uniquely extensive and well-preserved
ensemble of Socialist Realist architecture from the early years of
Czechoslovakia’s communist regime in the 1950s. Though inspired
by the style used in large Soviet cities at the time, Poruba also
features some inspired historical touches echoing Classical and
Renaissance forms. The main residential area is entered through an
imposing triumphal arch.

Nohavica, Ostrava’s bard,
sings:
This neo-Baroque building designed by the Viennese architect
Alexander Graf is one of the most beautiful theatres in the country, and
is renowned for its excellent acoustics. The theatre features a unique
combination of old and new, combining an opulent neo-Baroque
interior with a reinforced concrete structure on a concrete foundation
– a very modern solution at the time when it was built. The foundations
were laid over the shaft of the former Antonín coal mine – so the
methane gas vents outside the theatre are fully functional.

Ostrava is full of interest for architecture-lovers. Many of the city’s
finest buildings are located within its historic core, which is a
protected heritage zone Moravská Ostrava.. In addition to Masaryk
Square (Masarykovo náměstí) – with the old city hall and the Marian
column dating from 1702 – this central core also boasts numerous
grand public buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Smetana Square (Smetanovo náměstí), to the south of Masaryk
Square, features the beautiful Antonín Dvořák Theatre and the
Librex bookstore, an exquisite example of pre-war Functionalism.
Other important structures in the city centre include the Elektra
Palace on Nádražní Street, with several imposing bank buildings in
the vicinity, and the New City Hall with its popular viewing tower.
Ostrava also has some notable sacred buildings – including the
13th-century Church of St Wenceslas or the Cathedral of the Holy
Saviour, which is the second largest church in Moravia and Silesia.
Many of the buildings in Ostrava’s central core were designed by
renowned architects such as Karel Kotas, Josef Gočár, Ernst Korner
and Alexander Graf.
