Course objectives:
The objective of the course is to introduce the students to the study of individual books of the Pentateuch and Former Prophets.
Requirements on student
- The Sstudent will carefully read the Pentateuch and the Former Prophets and the basic secondary literature.
Content
- Pentateuch: summary of the contents, structure, terminology, literary characteristics.
- Overview of traditional and critical approaches to the Pentateuch, the questions of origin.
Genesis-Deuteronomy: literary and theological characteristics of individual books.
- Literary and theological themes in the Pentateuch (e.g. creation, nations, election, crisis-judgment-salvation-restoration, worship
and sacrifices, law in the Pentateuch).
- Literary structure, content and main themes of Former Prophets

The student will understand literary and theological issues relating to the Pentateuch and to the Former Prophets and (s)he will be
prepared to start more detailed analysis of individual texts (especially in the following courses).
