Vážení a milí hosté Grandhotelu Pupp,
vítejte v prostorách jednoho z nejstarších a nejkrásnějších hotelů ve střední Evropě, v místech, která za uplynulých více než
300 let hostily přední evropské i světové osobnosti kultury,
vědy i politiky. Letošní zima se chýlí ke konci, některé její dny
už dokonce vyvolávaly jarní náladu. Jaro definitivně přijde

willkommen Sie in den Räumlichkeiten eines der ältesten und schönsten
Hotels in Mitteleuropa, an Stellen, wo in den vergangenen mehr als 300 Jahren
die vorderen Persönlichkeiten der Kultur, Wissenschaft und Politik aus Europa
und der Welt gastierten. Der diesjährige Winter neigt sich zum Ende, manche
seine Tage lösten sogar Frühlingsgefühle aus. Der Frühling kommt endgültig
und die grauen Morgennebel werden von frischen Farben der erwachenden
Natur ersetzt, die erfrorene Ruhe ersetzt das Vogelsingen. Die natürliche
Erneuerung der Natur kommt langsam ins rollen und wir werden wieder über
den Frühlingszauber erstaunen. Auch im Grandhotel Pupp kommt es zu be­

Dear guests of the Grandhotel Pupp,
Welcome to the rooms of one of the oldest and most beautiful hotels in central Europe, to the rooms which have been hosting foremost European and
world personalities of culture, science and politics for more than 300 years.
This year‘s winter is drawing to an end – some of its days have even created
a spring mood. The spring will definitively arrive; grey morning fog will be
replaced by fresh colours of awakening nature and frozen silence by birds
chirping. A slow renewal of nature will slowly start and we will be amazed at
the magic of spring again. New things will happen in the Grandhotel Pupp
too. We are planning to prepare a new café in the modern style – Rendez vous
– for you. New furniture is waiting for you in our best restaurant too – in the
Grandrestaurant – about which you can learn more on the following pages of
this magazine. We are looking forward to you. Our ambition is to make you
look forward to another visit to the Grandhotel Pupp.

Zvítězil název Grand Lobby. Ten nám zaslali pan
Thomas Lein a paní Sonja Rothermel z Německa.
Vítězové budou odměněni velikonočním pobytem
v Grandhotelu Pupp. Děkujeme a gratulujeme.
Tento tradiční společenský ples s programem a  rautem je každoroční zimní předzvěstí letního
Mezinárodního filmového festivalu v Karlových
Varech. Je vždy pořádán v duchu některého českého filmu. Letošní 13. ročník Bál Festivalu se nesl ve
znamení filmu Rebelové režiséra Filipa Renče. Dílo
se svým žánrem řadí mezi romantické muzikály
a  odehrává se v šedesátých letech minulého století.
Ball Festival
Dieser traditionelle Gesellschaftsball mit Programm
und einer Festtafel ist alljährlich Wintervorbote des
im Sommer stattfindenden Internationalen
Filmfestivals in Karlsbad. Er wird immer im Stil
eines tschechischen Films veranstaltet. Der dies­
jährige 13. Jahrgang von Ball Festival verlief im
Zeichen des Films Rebelové von Regisseur Filip
Renč. Das Werk reiht man mit seinem Genre zu
den romantischen Musicals und er spielt sich in
den sechziger Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts ab.
Wettbewerb
patnáct maturitních plesů různých středních škol.
Několik měsíců před maturitní zkouškou si středoškoláci mohou užít „svůj“ večer v krásných prostorách našeho hotelu. Je to skutečně tradiční místo
pořádání plesů v Karlových Varech. Maturitní
plesy bývají oblíbené pro svou neformální atmosféru a zdaleka nejsou určeny jen pro maturanty.
Abiturbälle
Genauso wie jedes andere Jahr fanden auch dies­
mal im Festsaal von Grandhotel Pupp fünfzehn
Abiturbälle verschiedener Mittelschulen statt.
Einige Monate vor der Abiturprüfung können die
Mittelschüler „ihren“ Abend in den schönen
Räumlichkeiten unseres Hotels genießen. Es ist
wirklich ein traditioneller Veranstaltungsort der
Bälle in Karlsbad. Die Abiturbälle sind für ihre
unformale Atmosphäre beliebt und sie sind von
weitem nicht nur für die Abiturienten bestimmt.

Ball Festival
This traditional ball with a programme and a reception is the annual harbinger of the International
Film Festival in Karlovy Vary. It is always organized in the style of some Czech film. This year‘s
13th festival took place in the manner of the film
Rebels by the director Filip Renč. The film is a ro­
mantic musical which is set in the 1960s.
Maturitní plesy
Stejně jako každý jiný rok i tentokrát se ve
Slavnostním sále Grandhotelu Pupp odehrálo na
Like every year this year too, fifteen different secondary schools had their balls in the Festive Hall of the
Grandhotel Pupp. Several months before their final
exams students can enjoy ”their“ evening in the beautiful rooms of our hotel. It is a really traditional place
for balls in Karlovy Vary. Students´ balls are popular
because of their informal atmosphere and they are by
no means aimed only at future graduates.
Im vergangenen Jahr wurde für die Gäste von
Grandhotel Pupp ein Wettbewerb zur Benennung
der neu errichteten Hotellobby ausgerufen. Am
Wettbewerb nahmen 560 Besucher teil. Den
richtigen Namen aus so großer Anzahl an Ideen
auszusuchen war gar nicht einfach. Zu den interessantesten Vorschlägen gehörten: Galerie Pupp,
Celebrity Hall, Refugium. Manche Benennungen
wurden von den hiesigen Dreharbeiten des James
Bond Films Casino Royale inspiriert, z. B. Bond
Lounge oder Old England. Es gewann die
Benennung Grand Lobby. Diese sendeten uns
Herr Thomas Lein und Frau Sonja Rothermel aus
Deutschland. Die Gewinner werden mit einem
Osteraufenthalt im Grandhotel Pupp belohnt.

Competition
Last year we prepared a competition for the guests
of the Grandhotel Pupp. Its aim was to find a name
for the new hotel lobby. 560 visitors took part in
the competition. It was not easy to choose just
one of such a big number of ideas. Here are the
most interesting ones: Galerie Pupp, Celebrity
Hall and Refugium. Some names were inspired by
the Bond film Casino Royale which had been shot
here, e.g. Bond Lounge or Old England. However,
the winning name is Grand Lobby. The idea was
sent to us from Germany by Mr. Thomas Lein and
Mrs. Sonja Rothemel. The winners will be rewarded with an Easter stay in the Grandhotel Pupp.

V loňském roce byla pro hosty Grandhotelu Pupp
vyhlášena soutěž o pojmenování nově vybudovaného hotelového lobby. Soutěže se zúčastnilo 560
návštěvníků. Vybrat ten pravý název z tak velkého
množství nápadů nebylo jednoduché. Mezi nejzajímavější návrhy patřily: Galerie Pupp, Celebrity

A new centre of Thai massages will be opened in
the Harfa building in the Grandhotel Pup from the
beginning of April. The offer of services in this
pleasant milieu will be very wide and will surely
satisfy everyone. Come and have your body massaged
by real professionals whose palms will have the
same effect on you as sunrays have because
”tawan“ means ”the sun“ in Thai.

Grund seines Besuches sollte ein galantes
Abenteuer sein…
… im Jahre 1768 fand vor dem Böhmischen Saal
eine Schachpartie statt, in der die Figuren von
Kindern ersetzt wurden? Veranstalter dieses außergewöhnlichen Spektakels, Graf Thurn-Taxis, erteilte
die Befehle durch gezückten Säbel aus dem Fenster
des Böhmischen Saals.

prince. The reason of his visit should have been some

Bohemian Hall in which figures were replaced by
children? The organizer of the unusual show, Count
Thurn-Taxis, issued orders with a bare sabre from the
window of the Bohemian Hall.

Asparagus is a kind of vegetable which is rich
especially in silicon, contains a high amount of
phosphorus, manganese and iron. It also contains
a number of beneficial vitamins. It has got a high
food value and strong purgative effects. People
have loved asparagus for more than 5, 000 years;
it was popular in ancient Egypt and China too. In
Europe it is grown first of all in France, Belgium

Pokud jste již měli možnost ochutnat v puppovské
restauraci některou z lahůdek, jistě Vás zajímalo,
kdo takové chuťové skvosty vytváří. A jestli se do
Grandrestaurantu teprve chystáte, jistě Vás následující řádky přesvědčí o tom, že se Vašim chuťovým nárokům a přáním dostane maximální pozornosti. Rádi bychom Vám totiž představili šéfkuchaře Grandrestaurantu pana Jana Pípala, muže, který
nese hlavní odpovědnost za Vaši spokojenost
s gastronomickou částí služeb poskytovaných
Grandhotelem Pupp.
Jan Pípal pochází z Prahy, kde také vystudoval
obor stravování a služeb. Již během studia se podílel na přípravě mnoha cateringových akcí. Po
ukončení školy pracoval několik sezón v různých
střediscích Hotelu Intercontinental Praha. Ještě
před nástupem do Grandhotelu Pupp se věnoval
přípravě jídel pro luxusní vyhlídkové patro Sazka
Areny v Praze. I při náročném pracovním vytížení
ještě stihl externě připravovat obědy pro turecké
a indonéské velvyslanectví, podílel se také na zajištění festivalů české kuchyně v Belgii a Thajsku.
Od roku 2006 zodpovídá za celkový chod kuchyní v Grandhotelu Pupp a Golfrestaurantu. Šéf­
kuchař Grandhotelu Pupp Jan Pípal je držitelem
mnoha ocenění, získal například titul Kuchař roku
2003/2004 v České republice. Neméně důležité
je však ocenění od Vás, našich hotelových hostů.

möchten Ihnen nämlich gern den Chefkoch von
Grandrestaurant Herrn Jan Pípal vorstellen, einen
Mann, der die Hauptverantwortung für Ihre
Zufriedenheit mit den gastronomischen Dienst­
leistungen im Grandhotel Pupp trägt.
Jan Pípal stammt aus Prag, wo er auch das Fach
der Verpflegung und der Dienstleistungen studierte. Bereits während des Studiums nahm er an der
Vorbereitung vieler Cateringaktionen teil. Nach
dem Schulabschluss arbeitete er einige Saisons in
verschiedenen Filialen von Hotel Intercontinental
Prag. Noch vor dem Stellenantritt ins Grandhotel
Pupp widmete er sich der Vorbereitung der
Speisen für die luxuriöse Aussichtsetage der Sazka
Arena in Prag. Auch bei anspruchsvoller Arbeit
schaffte er es noch extern Mittagessen für die
türkische und indonesische Botschaft vorzubereiten, er beteiligte sich auch an den Festivals der
Böhmischen Küche in Belgien und Thailand.
Seit dem Jahre 2006 ist er für den gesamten
Betrieb der Küchen im Grandhotel Pupp und im
Golfrestaurant verantwortlich. Der Chefkoch von
Grandhotel Pupp Jan Pípal ist Besitzer vieler
Preise, er bekam zum Beispiel den Titel Koch des
Jahres 2003/2004 in der Tschechischen Republik.
Gleichwertig ist aber auch die Ehrung von Ihnen,
unseren Hotelgästen. Nehmen Sie deshalb die

like to introduce the chef of the Grandrestaurant
Jan Pípal to you. He is the man who is responsible
for your satisfaction with the gastronomic part of
service provided by the Grandhotel Pupp.
Jan Pípal comes from Prague where he also studied catering and services. During his studies he
took part in lots of catering events. After finishing
school he worked in different centres of the Hotel
Intercontinental Praha for several seasons. Before
he started working in the Grandhotel Pupp, he
prepared meals on the luxury viewing floor of the
Sazka Arena in Prague. Though his workload was
very heavy, he managed to prepare dinners for
the Turkish and Indonesian Embassies externally,
and he also helped to organize festivals of Czech
cuisine in Belgium and Thailand.
He has been responsible for the operation of the
kitchens in the Grandhotel Pupp and the Golf­
restaurant since 2006.
The chef of the Grandhotel Pupp Jan Pípal is
a  holder of a lot of prizes; he e.g. won the title of
the Cook of the Year 2003/2004 in the Czech
Republic. However, your appreciation, i.e. the
appreciation of our hotel guests, is no less important. Accept therefore our invitation to the table

bath fulfils the function of a hotel relaxation centre. It can be found in the main building of the
Grandhotel Pupp, on the first floor of the De
Luxe part. Here you can relax, make your body
more beautiful or train in a pleasant interior in the
style of Roman bath. You can make use of the
sauna, steam bath, whirlpool, fitness centre, and
solarium and, of course, of massages.
A novelty of Roman Bath is a sensual chocolate
massage which is said to relax your body and soul
most. The delight you will take in hot, melting
chocolate will definitely rid you of stress and
a bad mood. In addition to it, thanks to caffeine
in chocolate, it is an excellent treatment for cellulites; it enriches skin with minerals and renews,
moistens and feeds it in this way. A real delight for
both your body and soul can be the exotic honey
massage or the yoghurt massage. Of course, the
workers in the relaxation centre can ensure the
classical massage for you which has positive effects
on your muscles, subcutaneous tissue, ligaments
and joints. After an afternoon walk through
Karlovy Vary you will surely like the reflexive

Oslava vánočních svátků v Grandhotelu
Pupp se odehrála v tradičním duchu.
Všichni hoteloví hosté se sešli ve velmi
přátelské a klidné atmosféře u štědrovečerní večeře. V bujařejším duchu se nesly
silvestrovské oslavy. Poslední večer roku
2007 se Slavnostní sál změnil ve varieté,
kde bylo možno obdivovat výkony artistů
z celého světa. Program byl ukončen ohňostrojem.

Die Weihnachtsfeier verlief im Grandhotel Pupp
im traditionellen Stil. Alle Hotelgäste trafen sich in
sehr freundlichen und ruhigen Atmosphäre bei
dem Heiligabendessen. Die Silvesterfeier verlief in
ungestümeren Art und Weise. Am letzten Abend
des Jahres 2007 verwandelte sich der Festsaal in
ein Varieté, wo man die Kunststücke von Artisten
aus der ganzen Welt bewundern konnte. Das
Programm wurde mit einem Feuerwerk beendet.
The Christmas celebration in the Grandhotel
Pupp was held in the traditional style. All hotel
guests met at the Christmas table and the atmosphere was friendly and peaceful. New Year's
celebrations were livelier. The Festive Hall was
changed into a variety theatre on New Year's
evening where you could admire performances
of artistes from the whole world. At the end of
the programme there was a firework.

Vývoj Grandhotelu
Pupp se může po­
chlubit více než třísetletou historií, během které se stal jedním ze symbolů
Karlových Varů. Kde tedy hledat počátky mezinárodního věhlasu, kterým se Grandhotel Pupp může pochlubit? První stavbou na místě nynějšího hotelového
komplexu byl Saský sál, postavený tehdejším starostou
města Deimlem v roce 1701. Sál byl původně pojmenován Salle de l´Assemblée. Na přijetí pozdějšího názvu
měl vliv fakt, že spoluinvestorem stavby byl saský kurfiřt a polský král August Silný II. Jiný karlovarský starosta, Andreas Becher, stál za stavbou blízkého, avšak
konkurenčního Českého sálu. Potomci starosty Deimla
si na svých pozemcích před Českým sálem postavili
dům Boží oko, třetí pilíř budoucího hotelového celku.
Své nynější jméno nese Grandhotel po Johannovi
Georgovi Puppovi, cukráři, jenž se přiženil do vlivné
karlovarské rodiny Mitterbachů. Pupp koupil postupně
v letech 1775-85 od Becherů Český sál, od základů ho
přestavěl a zvětšil. Snažil se také koupit, nebo alespoň
pronajmout i Saský sál, to se mu však nepodařilo.
Povedlo se to až jeho pravnukům, Antonovi, Juliovi
a Heinrichovi Puppům. Tito tři bratři založili v roce
1872 společnou firmu Pupp, která se postarala o největší vzestup hotelového komplexu. Ten se tehdy nazýval Etablissement Pupp a zahrnoval především prostory Českého sálu, Cafésalonu a k němu přilehlému
Billiardsalonu. Saský sál koupili bratři až v roce 1890.
Pátá generace Puppů započala rozsáhlé rekonstrukce.
Skoupili zbytek okolních pozemků, staré budovy dali
zbourat a zcela přestavět. Přestavbu vedli osvědčení vídeňští architekti Ferdinad Fellner a Hermann Helmer.
Grandhotel tak získal podobu, jakou známe dnes.

Die Entwicklung von Grandhotel Pupp kann sich
mit mehr als dreihundertjähriger Geschichte
rühmen, während der es zu einem der Symbole
von Karlsbad wurde. Wo soll man also den Ur­
sprung der internationalen Berühmtheit, mit der sich
Grandhotel Pupp rühmen kann, suchen? Das erste
Objekt an Stelle des jetzigen Hotelkomplexes war der
Sächsische Saal, gebaut vom damaligen Bürgermeister
der Stadt Deiml im Jahre 1701. Der Saal wurde ursprünglich Salle de l´Assemblée genannt. Seine spätere Benennung beeinflusste, dass der Mitinvestor
der sachsische Kurfürst und polnische König August
II. der Starke war. Ein anderer Karlsbader Bürger­
meister, Andreas Becher, verursachte den Bau des in
der Nähe liegenden, aber konkurrierenden Böhmischen
Saales. Die Nach­kommen vom Bürgermeister Deiml
haben auf ihren Grundstücken vor dem Böhmischen
Saal das Haus Gottes Auge gebaut, die dritte Säule
des zukünftigen Hotelkomplexes. Seinen jetzigen
Namen trägt das Grandhotel nach Johann Georg
Pupp, einem Zuckerbäcker, der sich in die einflussreiche Karls­bader Familie Mitterbach einheiratete.
Pupp kaufte nach und nach in den Jahren 1775-85
von Familie Becher den Böhmischen Saal, von
Grundrissen hat er ihn umgebaut und vergrößert. Er
bemühte sich auch den Sächsischen Saal zu kaufen,
oder wenigstens zu mieten, dies gelang ihm aber
nicht. Es gelang erst seinen Urenkeln, Anton, Julius
und Hein­rich Pupp. Diese drei Brüder gründeten im
Jahre 1872 eine gemeinsame Firma Pupp, die für den
größten Aufschwung vom Hotelkomplex sorgte.
Dieser hieß damals Etablissement Pupp und umfasste
vor allem die Räumlichkeiten des Böhmischen Saals,
den Cafésalon und den anliegenden Billard­salon.
Den Sächsischen Saal kauften die Brüder erst im
Jahre 1890. Die fünfte Generation Pupp begann mit
umfangreicher Rekonstruktion. Sie kauf­ten die übrigen umliegenden Grundstücke, die alten Gebäude
ließen Sie niederreißen und bauten sie völlig um.
Den Umbau führten die anerkannten Wiener
Architekten Ferdinand Fellner und Hermann Helmer.
Das Grandhotel bekam somit das Aussehen, das wir

The Grandhotel Pupp can boast more than a 300-hundred-year-old history during which it has become one
of the symbols of Karlovy Vary. And where to look
for the origins of the international fame the
Grandhotel Pupp can boast? The first building in the
place of the present hotel complex was the Saxon
Hall whose construction had been initiated by Mayor
Deiml in 1701. The hall was originally called Salle de
l´Assemblée. Later it was renamed as one of its coinvestors was the Saxon elector and Polish king
August the Strong II. Another mayor of Karlovy Vary,
Andreas Becher, initiated the construction of the nearby Bohemian Hall, a rival of the Saxon Hall.
Mayor Deiml´s descendants built the God‘s Eye
House, the third pillar of the future hotel complex,
on their grounds in front of the Bohemian Hall. It has
got its present name after Johann George Pupp,
a confectioner who married into the influential
Mitterbach family from Karlovy Vary. Between 1775
and 1785 Pupp bought the Bohemian Hall from the
Becher family part after part, rebuilt it from its very
foundations and extended it. He tried, too, to buy or
at least to hire the Saxon Hall; however, he was not
successful. Only his great-grandsons Anton, Julius
and Heinrich Pupp managed to do it. In 1872 the
three brothers founded a firm Pupp together which
played an important part in the later rise of the hotel
complex. At that time it was called Etablissement
Pupp and included first of all the Bohemian Hall,
Cafésalon and the adjacent Billiardsalon. It was only
in 1890 that the brothers bought the Saxon Hall. The
fifth generation of the Pupps started an extensive renovation. They bought the remaining grounds in the
neighbourhood, had the buildings pulled down and
completely rebuilt. The renovation was lead by experienced Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and
Hermann Helmer. In those days the Grandhotel
Pupp got the appearance which we know today.

Architekti - lazebníci tváře Karlových Varů
Karlovy Vary se proslavily nejen svou lázeňskou tradicí, společenským životem či
polohou v krásné
krajině. Významným
prvkem, který spoluvytváří svébytnou
a do­dnes obdivovanou atmosféru města, je architektura lázeňské části. O jeho půvabnou tvář se významně zasloužili legendární vídeňští stavitelé Ferdinand Fellner
a Hermann Helmer. Pro styl, kterým dodnes uchvacují
obyvatele i návštěvníky Karlových Varů, se užívá pojem
karlovarský historismus. Fellner a Helmer začali působit
ve Vídni v roce 1873, kdy založili projektovou kancelář.
Prosluli především ve střední Evropě, kde za 43 let své
spolupráce navrhli a vyprojektovali více než 200 staveb. Specializací jejich ateliéru byly budovy divadelní
a koncertní. U nich se tito architekti zaměřili i na bezpečnost a funkčnost provozu, což se stalo důležitou
součástí jejich firemní pověsti. V Karlových Varech
a okolí navrhla firma Fellner a Helmer téměř 20 významných objektů. Stavitelé se uvedli návrhem Vřídelní
kolonády, jež byla postavena roku 1879. Následovaly
projekty staveb: Sadová kolonáda s koncertním sálem
a restaurací (l88l), Tržní kolonáda (l883), Městské divadlo (l886), Goethova vyhlídka (l889), Císařské lázně (l895), hotel Národní dům (l90l). Poslední realizovanou stavbou Fellnera a Helmera v Karlových Varech
je přestavba Grandhotelu Pupp, při které byly jednotlivé objekty propojeny v hotelový komplex. Součástí rekonstrukce, která proběhla na přelomu 19. a 20. století,
byla výstavba nového koncertního sálu na místě bývalého Cafésalonu. Objekt, ve kterém se nachází
Slavnostní sál, je umístěn mezi Parkhotelem a Grand­
hotelem a může se pochlubit vysoce reprezentativním
a dekorativně působivým interiérem. Přestavba vtiskla
Grandhotelu i Parkhotelu jednotící architektonickou
úpravu, jaká přetrvala do dnešních dnů. Při pobytu
v našem hotelu můžete sami ocenit stavitelské umění
pánů Fellnera a Helmera jako evropské stavitelské
špičky své doby.

Karlsbad wurde nicht nur durch seine Kurtradition,
dem Gesellschaftsleben oder durch die Lage in schöner
Landschaft bekannt. Ein bedeutendes Element, das bis
heute die eigenständige und bewunderte Stadt­
atmosphäre mitbildet, ist die Architektur des Kurviertels.
Sein liebliches Gesicht gestalteten bedeutend die legendären Wiener Architekten Ferdinand Fellner und

Hermann Helmer. Der Stil, der bis heute die Einwohner
und Besucher von Karlsbad bezaubert, wird als
Karlsbader Historismus genannt. Fellner und Helmer
begannen in Wien im Jahre 1873 zu wirken, als sie ein
Projektbüro gründeten. Sie wurden vor allem in
Mitteleuropa berühmt, wo sie binnen 43 Jahren ihrer
Zusammenarbeit mehr als 200 Bauten entwarfen und
projektierten. Eine Spezialisierung ihres Ateliers waren
Theatergebäude und Konzertsäle. Wobei sich diese
Architekten auch auf die Sicherheit und Funk­
tionsfähigkeit des Betriebes konzentrierten, was zu einem wichtigen Bestandteil ihres Firmenrufes wurde.
In Karlsbad und Umgebung entwarf die Firma Fellner
und Helmer fast 20 bedeutende Objekte. Die Architekten
wurden mit dem Projekt der Sprudelkolonnade bekannt, die im Jahre 1879 erbaut wurde. Es folgten
weitere Bauprojekte: die Parkkolonnade mit Konzertsaal
und Restaurant (l88l), die Marktkolonnade (l883), das
Stadttheater (l886), die Goethe Aussicht (l889), das
Kaiserbad (l895), das Hotel Schützenhaus (l90l). Der
letzte durchgeführte Bau von Fellner und Helmer
in Karlsbad ist der Umbau von Grandhotel Pupp, wobei die einzelnen Objekte in ein Hotelkomplex verbunden wurden. Ein Teil der Rekonstruktion, die um die
Wende des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts verlief, war der
Aufbau des neuen Konzertsaals an Stelle des ehemaligen Cafésalon. Der Bau, in dem der Festsaal ist, befindet sich zwischen dem Parkhotel und dem Grandhotel
und er kann sich mit einem hoch repräsentativen und
dekorativ wirkenden Innenraum rühmen. Der Umbau
prägte dem Grandhotel sowie dem Parkhotel ein einigendes architektonisches Aussehen ein, das bis in die
heutigen Tage geblieben ist. Während Ihres Aufenthalts

(1886), the Goethe Outlook Tower (1889), the
Emperor’s Spa Building (1895) and the hotel National
House (1901). Fellner and Helmer´s last work in
Karlovy Vary was the renovation of the Grandhotel
Pupp during which individual buildings were connected
in a hotel complex. Part of the renovation which took
place at the turn of the 19th century was the construction of a new concert hall in place of the former
Cafésalon. The building in which there is the Festive
Hall is located between the Parkhotel and the
Grandhotel and can boast a highly representative and
a decoratively impressive interior. The renovation has
united both the Parkhotel and the Grandhotel in the
style of architecture up to these days.

Karlovy Vary became famous not only thanks to its spa

An important element that co-creates the unique and
admired atmosphere of the town is the architecture in
the spa part of the town. The beau­tiful appearance of
the spa part is the result of work of legendary architects
Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer from Vienna.
The style which has been fascinating both the inhabitants and the visitors to Karlovy Vary for years is called
Karlovy Vary historicism.
Fellner and Helmer started working in Vienna in 1873
after they had set up a designer studio. They became
famous especially in Middle Europe where they co-designed more than 200 buildings within 43 years. Their

Stadt Eger
Při poznávání pamětihodností Karlovarského kraje byste
neměli vynechat návštěvu historického města Cheb, který
nabízí procházky mimořádně zachovalým historickým
centrem města s mnoha památkami nebo návštěvu některé z mnoha kulturních událostí.
Historie města sahá do konce 10. století, kdy se zde nacházelo opevněné slovanské hradiště. První písemná
zpráva o Chebu pochází z roku 1061, jako město je zmiňován začátkem 13. století. Z konce 13. století pochází výstavba, která vytvořila městské historické jádro tak, jak je
k vidění dnes. V druhé polovině 15. století, díky vzájemné
podpoře s českým králem Jiřím z Po­dě­brad, nastává pro
město období prosperity, které trvá až do třicetileté války
v první polovině 17. století. Výhodná strategická poloha
města však měla za následek jeho dobývání a drancování
okolí, ve kterém se střídaly obě bojující strany. V této době
bývá Cheb spojován se jménem Albrechta z Valdštejna,
jedním z nejvyšších velitelů císařských vojsk, který do města
přijel celkem pětkrát. Při své poslední návštěvě roku 1634
zde byl zavražděn. Po třicetileté válce se město ocitlo na
pokraji hospodářského zániku. Zlepšení hospodářské situace nastalo ve 2. polovině 17. století. V devatenáctém století se díky vrůstající proslulosti blízkých Františkových Lázní
objevuje v Chebu mnoho českých i evropských osobností
z oblasti kultury a vědy. Po obou světových válkách dvacátého století následuje období klidného rozvoje.
Pokud se rozhodnete pro výlet do Chebu, neměl by
Vaší pozornosti ujít Špalíček, což je seskupení jedenácti
domů na náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad. Komplex postupně
vyrůstal od 13. století. Navštivte také některý z kostelů
a areál hradu s městským opevněním.
Cheb je z Karlových Varů snadno dosažitelný autem i autobusovou a železniční dopravou. Výlet do Chebu můžete
snadno spojit s návštěvou nedalekých Františkových Lázní.

Die Stadtgeschichte reicht bis
ans Ende des 10. Jahrhunderts,
als sich hier eine befestigte
slawische Burgstätte befand.
Erste schriftliche Erwähnung
über Eger stammt aus dem Jahre 1061, als Stadt wird es
am Anfang des 13. Jahrhundert angeführt. Vom Ende
des 13. Jahrhundert stammen die Gebäude, die den
historischen Stadtkern so bildeten, wie man ihn heute
sehen kann. In der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts,
dank gegenseitiger Unterstützung des böhmischen
Königs Jiří z Poděbrad, beginnt für die Stadt eine
Blütezeit, die bis zum dreißigjährigen Krieg in der ersten
Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts andauerte. Die günstige
strategische Lage der Stadt hatte aber Zufolge, dass sie
erobert und deren Umgebung geplündert wurde, worin
sich beide Gegner wechselten. Zu dieser Zeit wird Eger
mit dem Namen Albrecht von Wallenstein verbunden,
einem der höchsten Befehlshaber der kaiserlichen
Armee, der in die Stadt insgesamt fünfmal kam. Bei
seinem letzten Besuch im Jahre 1634 wurde er hier ermordet. Nach dem dreißigjährigen Krieg befand sich
die Stadt am Rande eines wirtschaftlichen Niedergangs.
Eine Ver­bes­serung der wirtschaftlichen Lage begann in
der 2. Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts. Im neunzehnten
Jahr­hundert erscheinen in Eger, dank des zunehmenden Ruhmes des in der Nähe liegenden Franzensbads,
viele tschechische sowie europäische Persönlichkeiten
aus dem Bereich der Kultur und Wissenschaft. Nach
beiden Weltkriegen des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts folgt
eine Epoche ruhiger Entwicklung.
Falls sie sich für einen Ausflug nach Eger entscheiden,
sollte Ihrer Aufmerksamkeit der Stöckl (Špalíček) nicht
entgehen, was eine Gruppierung von elf Häusern am
Marktplatz Jiří z Poděbrad ist. Der Komplex entstand
nach und nach seit dem 13. Jahrhundert. Besuchen Sie
auch eine der Kirchen und das Burg­ge­län­de mit der
Stadtbefestigung.
Eger ist aus Karlsbad einfach zu erreichen, mit dem
Auto, sowie mit dem Bus- und Zugverkehr. Den Ausflug
nach Eger können Sie einfach mit dem Besuch vom
unweiten Franzensbad verbinden.

The Town of Cheb
When you go sightseeing in the Karlovy Vary region,
you should not leave out the historic town of Cheb. It
offers a walk through the well-preserved historical centre
of the town with numerous monuments as well as lots
of cultural events.
The history of the town goes back to the late 10th
century when there was a fortified Slavonic settlement
here. The first record of Cheb dates from the year 1061
and the first record of the town of Cheb dates from the
early 13th century. Houses which make up the historical
centre of the town as you know it today date from the
late 13th century. In the second half of the 15th century
the period of prosperity came thanks to the mutual
support of the town and the Czech king Jiří of
Poděbrady. It lasted until the Thirty Years´ War started
in the first half of the 17th century. However, the advantageous strategic location of the town resulted in numerous attempts to capture it and in plundering its neigh­
bourhood with both fighting parts taking turns at it. At
this time Cheb was often connected with the name of
Albrecht of Wallenstein, one of the most powerful commanders of the emperor’s army, who came to the town
five times. He was murdered here during his last visit in
1634. After the Thirty Years´ War the town was on the
verge of economic decline. It was only in the second
half of the 17th century that an improvement in the
economic situation arrived. A lot of both Czech and foreign personalities from the world of culture and science
appeared in Cheb in the 19th century thanks to increasing popularity of nearby Františkovy Lázně.
If you decide to go on a trip to Cheb, you should definitely see Špalíček, a group of eleven houses in Jiřího
z Poděbrad Square. The first of the houses were built in
the 13th century. Go to see some of churches as well
as the castle and town fortifications.
Cheb is easily accessible from Karlovy Vary by car, bus
and by train.
You can connect your trip to Cheb with a visit to nearby
Františkovy Lázně.

Pověst říká, že to bylo právě někde mezi dnešním Karlovým a Tržním pramenem, kde si zakladatel lázní Karel IV. léčil své choré končetiny.
Podle F. Summera (1571) zde stávaly první karlovarské lázně. Od nepaměti zde byly drobné
i větší vývěry, které často mizely a zase se znovu
objevovaly. Vlastní Tržní pramen byl objeven
poměrně pozdě, až v roce 1838 mezi lékárnou
„U bílého orla“ a domem „U žirafy“. Vyvěral
z trhliny v asi 15 cm mocné žíle vřídlovce, uzavřené v žule na úpatí Zámecké věže.
Již v roce 1840 v průběhu prací na Vřídle pramen
zcela zapadl a ani po jejich skončení se úplně nezotavil. V roce 1848 bylo jímání prohloubeno, ale
bez výsledku. Až po demolici radnice a přilehlých
domů byl v roce 1879 pramen znovu jímán. Další
jímání, tentokrát již cínovými zvonky namísto dosavadních dřevěných jímek, bylo uskutečněno
v zimě 1893/94. Poslední mělké jímání je z doby
před I. světovou válkou.
Protože přelivná úroveň (výtlačná výška) těchto
zdrojů byla asi 2 metry pod podlahou promenoáru Tržní kolonády, muselo se k Tržnímu prameni sestupovat po schodech. Tehdy se počítalo s tím, že se jedná o provizorní stavbu, která
bude brzy nahrazena, a pak se vše vyřeší. Tržní
kolonáda, postavená v roce 1893 jako provizorium, je dnes památkově chráněným objektem.
Nové zachycení Tržního pramene vrty umožnilo přivedení jeho vody až nad úroveň promenoáru kolonády.

„Zum weissen Adler“ und dem Haus „Zur
Giraffe“. Die Quelle versank fast im Verlaufe der
Arbeiten am Sprudel im Jahre 1840. Völlig erholte sie sich nie wieder. Deshalb wurde sie im
Jahre 1848 tiefer gefasst, leider ohne Ergebnis.
Nachdem im Jahre 1879 das Rathaus und die
anliegenden Häuser niedergerissen wurden, wurde die Quelle neu gefasst. Die nächste Fassung
kam im Winter 1893-94. Damals benutzte man
schon Zinnglocken statt hölzerner Reservoire.
Die letzte seichte Fassung stammt aus der Zeit vor
dem 1. Weltkrieg.
Da die Druckhöhe dieser Quellen ungefähr
2 Meter unter der Promenade der Marktkolonnade
war, musste man einige Stufen herabsteigen, um
die Marktquelle zu erreichen. Damals rechnete
man damit, dass es sich um einen provisorischen
Bau handelt, der durch ein neues Gebäude ersetzt wird.
Die im Jahre 1893 als Provisorium erbaute
Marktkolonnade wird heute vom Denkmalamt
geschützt. Das Thermal­wasser der Marktquelle
wurde über das Niveau der Promenade zugeleitet.
An old legend says that it was somewhere between
the present Charles and Market Mineral Springs
where the founder of the spa town, Charles IV,
tried to cure his sore legs. According to F. Summer
(1571) the first bathing facilities in Karlovy Vary
used to stand right in this place. Both small and big
thermal springs have existed here since time immemorial. They often disappeared and then they reappeared again. The Market Spring itself was discovered between the chemist‘s with the name ”White
Eagle“ and a house that used to be called ”Giraffe“
relatively late, only in 1838. The vein was closed
in the granite massif at the foot of the Castle Tower.
The spring almost disappeared in the course of
work on the Sprudel in 1840. When the work had
been finished, it did not reappear in its full strength. That was why a new and deeper well was made
in 1848 but it did not bring any result. After the
town hall and some houses in its neighbourhood
had been pulled down in 1879, a new well was
made. Another well was made in winter of 1893-94.
Wooden reservoirs were replaced with tin bells at
that time. The last shallow well dated back to the
time before the World War I.
As the delivery head of the springs was some
2 metres under the floor of the Market Colonnade,
it was necessary to descend some steps to reach
them. Originally the Market Colonnade was a provisional arrangement. It should have been replaced
with a new construction and at the same time the
problem of the access to the spring should have
been solved. The Market Colonnade was built in
1893 and at present it ranks among the most valuable historical monuments in the town. A new
well has made it possible to bring the water of the
Market Spring above the level of the promenade.

Der alten Legende nach war es gerade irgendwo
zwischen der heutigen Karl IV.-Quelle und der
Marktbrunnquelle, wo sich Karl IV. seine Beine
zu heilen versuchte.
F. Summer (1571) behauptet, dass sich die ersten
Badeanstalten in Karlsbad gerade an dieser Stelle
befanden. Von jeher gab es hier sowohl kleine
als auch grössere Quellen. Oft verschwanden
sie, um wieder zu erscheinen. Die Marktquelle

Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán
Z
aložení porcelánky v Lesově spadá do období vrcholného rozvoje porcelánové
výroby počátkem 20. století. Do historie českého porcelánu se zapisuje zla­
tým písmem až po druhé světové válce, kdy v budovách zaniklé porcelánky
Lenhard vzniká v roce1956 vývojové středisko Karlovarského porcelánu. Pracují
zde špičkoví modeláři realizující nový estetický pohled na tvarování a vzhled.
Špičkový design přináší úspěch zejména na světové výstavě EXPO ‘58 v Bruselu,
kde vývojový tým obdržel Grand Prix a zlatou medaili.
Po roce 1995, s novým vlastníkem, vzniká nová koncepce výroby pod značkou Thun
Studio Karlovarský porcelán. Jeho produkce svými vysokými nároky na řemeslné
zpracování vyžaduje manufakturní či ateliérový způsob výroby. Práce unikátního
designu a vysoké estetické úrovně, zpravidla v limitovaných sériích, nesou rukopis
­akademického sochaře Jiřího Laštovičky, člena Mezinárodní ­akademie keramiky.
Produkce Thun Studia tak sbírá řadu ocenění, je vyhledávaným artiklem sběratelů,
je zastoupena ve sbírkách muzeí.
Ve studiu se pravidelně konají doprovodné akce MFF či Mezinárodní konvicové
sympózium. Mimořádnou úroveň a kvalitu práce zdejších mistrů potvrzují takové
zakázky, jakými jsou servis pro prezidenta republiky a Pražský hrad, pro španělský
královský palác či zastupitelské úřady v zahraničí.

ie Gründung der Porzellanfabrik in Lesov fällt in die Zeit der Höch­sten­
twicklung der Porzellanerzeugung am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. In der
Historie des tschechischen Porzellans begann sie erst nach dem zweiten
Weltkrieg eine wichtige Rolle zu spielen, nachdem in den Gebäuden der ehemali­
gen Porzellanfabrik Lenhard ein Designer-Zentrum der Firma Karlovarský porcelán
ge­gründet worden war. Es arbeiten hier Top-Designers, die ein neues ästhetisches
Herantreten an die Formung und das Aussehen durchsetzten. Das Top-Design
brachte Erfolge vor allem auf der Weltaus­stellung EXPO ‘58 in Brüssel, wo das Team
den Grand Prix und eine goldene Medaille erhielt.
Nach dem Jahre 1995 mit einem neuen Besitzer, entstand eine ­neue Konzeption
der Produktion unter der Marke Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán. Wegen der ho­
hen Ansprüche an die handwerkliche Verarbeitung erfordert diese Produktion eine
Manufaktur oder ein Studio. Die Arbeiten von einzigartigem Design und hohem
ästheti­schen Standard zumeist in limitierten Serien, tragen die Handschrift des

und ist ein beliebter Artikel von Sammlern. Sie wird auch in den Sammlungen vieler
Museen vertreten.
Im Studio finden regelmässig die zum Internationalen Filmfestival gehörenden
Veranstaltungen oder das Internationale Kannesym­po­sium statt. Solche
Bestellungen wie das Service für den Präsidenten der Tschechischen Republik und
die Prager Burg, für die spanische Königsburg oder Vertre­tungsbehörden im
Ausland bestätigen den aussergewöhnlichen Standard und Qualität der Arbeit hie­
siger Meister.

he foundation of the porcelain factory in Lesov falls into the period of the
boom in porcelain production in the early 20th century. It was only after World
War II that it started to play an important role in the history of Czech porcelain
after a development centre of the company Karlovarský porcelán had been esta­
blished in the buildings of the former porcelain factory Lenhard in 1956. Top mo­
dellers who worked here put a new aesthetic view of shaping and appearance into
practice.
Top design brought success especially at the world exhibition EXPO ‘58 in Brussels
where the team won the Grand Prix and a gold medal.
After 1995, with a new owner, a new conception of production with the brand name
Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán came into being. Owing to its high demands for
craftsmanship, its products have to be made either in a manufacture or in a studio.
The work of unique design and high aesthetic quality, usually in limited series,
­bears the handwriting of the academic sculptor Jiří Laštovička, a member of
the International Academy of Ceramics. That is why the products of the Thun studio
get a number of awards, is popular with collectors and represented in the collec­
tions of museums.
Supporting events of the International Film Festival or the International
Jug Symposium are regularly held in the studio. Such orders like the service for
the President of the Republic, for the Prague Castle, the Spanish royal palace or
­diplomatic corps ­abroad confirm the exceptional quality and standard of local
masters’ work.
