Dear guests of the Grandhotel Pupp,
Hot summer days are gradually getting cold, the sun has started shortening its way
and yellow, orange and red have already appeared in the crowns of trees. Autumn
is drawing near and the Grandhotel Pupp, still full of the echoes of film
stars´summer visits, is welcoming you in all its beauty and uniqueness. No matter
if the coming autumn days entice you outdoors or drive you into our warm interiors, this issue of the Pupp Journal will always be your wonderful companion. We
will look back at the event which moved the world of film for ten days, but not
only after it. We will also warn you that it is hard to resist the culinary show of
the Grandrestaurant as well as the treatments in the centre Pupp Royal Spa. We
will tell you another part of the history of the Grandhotel Pupp and will show you
how the centre of the town changed in the course of centuries. We will be the first
hotel in Karlovy Vary to offer you a brand new service and will also send you on
a cycle trip: first by cableway and later through the spa woods. We will give you
tips on the most interesting events in the spa town and our topical offers of stays

Slavnostní večer Karlovarské
Becherovky
III. karlovarský karneval
Letošní ročník Karlovarského karnevalu měl mezinárodní účast. Postavy v maskách, kejklíři a alegorické vozy dorazily také z Německa, Maďarska
a Slovenska. V čele průvodu, který procházel lázeňským centrem, bubnoval Tam Tam Orchestra,
následován dalšími hudebníky, maskami, chůdaři
i významnými osobnostmi - například J.W.
Goethem, carem Petrem Velikým či Ludwigem
van Beethovenem.
III. Karlsbader Karneval
Der diesjährige Jahrgang des Karlsbader Karnevals
hatte internationale Beteiligung. Gestalten in
Masken, Gaukler und allegorische Wagen kamen
auch aus Deutschland, Ungarn und der Slowakei.
An der Front des Umzugs, der durch das
Kurzentrum zog, trommelte Tam Tam Orchestra,
gefolgt von weiteren Trommlern, Masken,
Stelzengehern und von bedeutenden Persön­
lichkeiten – zum Beispiel von J.W. Goethe, dem
Zaren Peter dem Großen oder von Ludwig van
Beethoven.
3rd Karlovy Vary Carnival
This year’s Karlovy Vary Carnival was with international participation. Figures in masks, conjurers
and floats came also from Germany, Hungary and
Slovakia. The Tam Tam Orchestra drummed at
the head of the procession which walked through
the spa centre. It was followed by other musi­
cians, people in masks and on stilts and famous
personalities - such as J.W. Goethe, Czar Peter the
Great or Ludwig van Beethoven.

wurde der König der tschechischen Eishockeyspieler
gekrönt, und zwar der derzeitige Weltmeister, der
gebürtige Karlsbader und derzeit NHL Spieler der
Florida Panthers und Torwart der tschechischen
Mannschaft Tomáš Vokoun. An zweiter Stelle endete in der Umfrage die lebende Legende des
Welteishockeys Jaromír Jágr.

45. mezinárodní filmový festival
Počátkem července se Karlovy Vary a Grandhotel
Pupp tradičně stávají centrem světové kinematografie. Grandhotel Pupp je tak po deset dní domovem filmových hvězd, prezidentů i bezpočtu
osobností ze světa filmu a společenského života.
Půlkulatý 45. ročník přinesl více než 200 filmových děl, proběhlo na 400 projekcí pro 130.000
diváků. Hlavní cenu - Křišťálový globus - si odvezl
španělský snímek režiséra Augustího Vily
Moskytiéra (The Mosquito Net). Cenu prezidenta
festivalu Jiřího Bartošky převzal britský herec Jude
Law, Cenu za mimořádný přínos světové kinematografii režiséři Juraj Herz a Nikita Michalkov.
Grandhotel Pupp hostil také další celebrity - herečku Marii de Medeiros (Pulp Fiction), režiséry
Kevina Macdonalda či Scotta Coopera, jehož snímek Crazy Heart festival zahajoval. Velký úspěch
sklidila také letošní festivalová znělka s Johnem
Malkovichem. Na znělku příští, tedy 46. ročníku
festivalu, si musíme počkat do 1. července 2011.

Nádherné karlovarské dostihové závodiště s historickou dřevěnou tribunou a dnes i golfovým hřištěm hostí každou lázeňskou sezónu řadu dostihových dní. Jeden z nich se konal 15. srpna a jeho

Anfangs Juli werden Karlsbad und das Grandhotel
Pupp traditionell zum Zentrum der Welt­ki­ne­ma­to­
grafie. Das Grandhotel Pupp ist so zehn Tage lang
das Zuhause der Filmstars, der Präsidenten sowie
der zahlreichen Persönlichkeiten der Filmwelt und
des Gesellschaftslebens. Der Halbrunde 45. Jahr­
gang brachte mehr als 200 Filmwerke, man zeigte
an die 400 Vorführungen für 130.000 Zuschauer.
Den Hauptpreis – den Kristallglobus erhielt der
spanische Film des Regisseurs Augustí Vila The
Mosquito Net. Den Preis des Festivalpräsidenten
Jiří Bartoška übernahm der britische Schauspieler
Jude Law, den Preis für den außergewöhnlichen
Beitrag der Weltkinematografie die Regisseure Juraj
Herz und Nikita Michalkov. Das Grandhotel Pupp
bewirtete auch weitere Stars – die Schauspielerin
Maria de Medeiros (Pulp Fiction), die Regisseure
Kevin Macdonald oder Scott Cooper, dessen Film
Crazy Heart die Festspiele eröffnete. Einen großen
Erfolg hatte auch der diesjährige Festivaljingle mit
John Malkovich. Auf den nächste Jingle, also des
46. Festivaljahrgangs, muss man bis zum 1. Juli
2011 warten.
Karlovy Vary and the Grandhotel Pupp traditionally become the centre of world cinema at the
beginning of July. The Grandhotel Pupp is the
home of film stars, presidents and a number of
personalities of the world of film and social life
for ten festival days. The 45th year of the festival
brought more than 200 film works which were
shown at 400 performances for 130,000 visitors.
The main prize – the Crystal Globe – went to the
Spanish director Augustí Vila for the film The
Mosquito Net. The British actor Jude Law got the
Festival President’s Award. The directors Juraj
Herz and Nikita Michalkov received the Award for
Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World
Cinema. The Grandhotel Pupp played host to
other celebrities as well – the actress Maria de
Medeiros (Pulp Fiction), the directors Kevin
Macdonald or Scott Cooper whose film Crazy
Heart opened the festival. This year’s festival theme with John Malkovich was a big success too. To
see the next theme, i.e. the one of the 46th festival, you have to wait until the 1st July 2011.

The Grandhotel Pupp Cup
The beautiful race course in Karlovy Vary with a historic wooden grandstand and today also with a golf
course plays host to a number of events every season. One of them was held on the 15th August and
its part was traditionally a flat race of the highest
category – the Masise Prize- the Grandhotel Pupp
Cup. The horse Nina Directa with the jockey Janáček
did the 1, 200 metres the quickest and won.

Výstava a kniha Příběh Grandhotelu Pupp
Grandhotel Pupp nebyl v létě v centru pozornosti jen díky filmovému festivalu. Karlovarské muzeum totiž otevřelo výstavu s názvem stejným jako titul knihy, která v tu
dobu spatřila světlo světa, a dočkala se svého křtu Příběh Grandhotelu Pupp. Spojovacím článkem obou
událostí je historik dr. Stanislav Burachovič, který je autorem textu knihy i kurátorem výstavy. Jak výstava, tak
kniha mapují bohatou historii Grandhotelu Pupp od samého počátku v roce 1701. Podávají svědectví o energii,
obchodní zdatnosti a vytrvalosti šesti generací jednoho
rodu i o vzestupech a pádech slavného evropského hotelu, jehož neopakovatelná atmosféra, jedinečná architektura a nefalšovaný duch místa zůstaly zachovány dodnes.
Myšlenka na realizaci reprezentativní knihy o historii hotelu přišla před dvěma lety od generální ředitelky
Grandhotelu Pupp Andrey Pfeffer-Ferklové a její realizace
se ujalo Vydavatelství Promenáda. Autor publikace prostudoval dobové časopisy, historickou literaturu, hotelové, muzejní i archivní dokumenty a setkal se s potomky
hotelové dynastie Puppů. Mohl tak sepsat a ve spolupráci
s publicistkou Jitkou Kulhánkovou vytvořit ojedinělou
monografii. Popis složitého budování hotelové dynastie
ilustruje na 180 fotografií a reprodukcí obrazů i dokumentů. Kniha velkého formátu má více jak 160 stran. Knihu
v české, německé nebo anglické verzi můžete zakoupit
v recepci Grandhotelu Pupp.

Geschichte vom Grandhotel Pupp
The Exhibition and the Book the
Story of the Grandhotel Pupp
Das Grandhotel Pupp war im Sommer im Zentrum der
Aufmerksamkeit nicht nur dank des Filmfestivals. Das
Karlsbader Museum eröffnete nämlich eine Ausstellung
mit dem gleichen Namen wie der Buchtitel, der in dieser
Zeit das Licht der Welt erblickte, und getauft wurde – Die
Geschichte vom Grandhotel Pupp. Ein Bindeglied beider
Ereignisse ist der Geschichtsforscher Dr. Stanislav
Burachovič, der der Buchautor sowie der Kurator der
Ausstellung ist. Sowohl die Ausstellung als auch das Buch
zeigt die reiche Geschichte vom Grandhotel Pupp von allem Anfang an im Jahre 1701. Sie bringen das Zeugnis
über die Energie, die Handelstüchtigkeit und die Ausdauer
von sechs Generationen einer Familie sowie über die
Aufstiege und die Untergänge des berühmten europäi­
schen Hotels, dessen einmalige Atmosphäre, einzigartige
Architektur und unverfälschter Genius Loci bis heute erhalten blieben. Die Idee ein repräsentatives Buch über die
Geschichte des Hotels zu haben kam vor zwei Jahren von
der Generaldirektorin von Grandhotel Pupp Frau Andrea
Pfeffer-Ferklová und ihre Verwirklichung nahm der Verlag
Promenáda auf. Der Autor der Publikation forschte in
zeitgenössischen Zeitschriften, in der Geschichtsliteratur,
in den Hotel-, Museums- sowie
Archivdokumenten und er traf
sich mit den Nachkommen der
Hoteldynastie der Pupps. Er
konnte so verfassen und in
Zusam­menarbeit mit der Publi­
zistin Frau Jitka Kulhánková eine
einmalige Monografie schaffen.
Die Be­schreibung des komp­
lizierten Aufbaues der Hotel­
dynastie schildern an die 180
Fotografien und Bild­re­pro­duk­
tionen sowie Do­ku­men­te. Das
Buch ist im großen Format heraus­
gegeben und hat mehr als 160
Seiten. Das Buch in tschechischer, deutscher oder englischer
Sprache kann man an der Grand­
hotel Pupp Rezeption kaufen.
The Grandhotel Pupp was
not in the centre of attention only because of the film
festival in the summer. It
was also because the
Karlovy Vary museum opened an exhibition whose
name was the same as the
title of the book which saw
the light of the day and had
its launch party at the very
same time – The Story of
the Grandhotel Pupp. The
historian Stanislav Bu­
rachovič is a link connecting
both events – he is the author of the book and the curator of the exhibition as
well. Both the exhibition and the book make acquainted with the rich history of the Grandhotel Pupp from
its very beginning in the year 1701. They bear witness
about the energy, business abilities and perseverance of
six generations of a family as well as about the rises and
falls of the famous European hotel whose unrepeatable
atmosphere, unique architecture and genuine genius
loci have been preserved until these days.The idea to
write a representative book about the history of the
hotel came from the general manager of the Grandhotel
Pupp Andrea Pfeffer-Ferklová and was implemented by
Promenáda Publishing. The author of the publication
studied period magazines and literature, hotel, museum
and archival materials and met the descendants of the
Pupp hotel dynasty. In co-operation with the publicist
Jitka Kulhánková he could create a unique monograph.
The description of the complicated building up of the
hotel dynasty, the architectural development of the famous hotel and the moving life stories of the members
of the Pupp family are illustrated by about 180 photographs, reproductions of pictures and documents. The
book, which is big in size, has more than 160 pages.

VÍTE, ŽE... … v 50. letech 20. století bylo v Grandhotelu Pupp
umístěno rekreační středisko generality československé
armády? V roce 1951 zde z nedbalosti či opilosti vojáků
propukl požár, který zachvátil 4. patro a střechu. Mnoho
cenných interiérů bylo tehdy nenávratně zničeno.
… Grandhotel Pupp je partnerem letošního Mistrovtsví světa
v basketbalu žen? To se koná od
28. září do 3. října v Ostravě,
Brně a Karlových Varech, v lázeňském městě šampionát také
finálovými boji vyvrcholí.

Fahrlässigkeit oder Betrunkenheit der Soldaten ein Brand
aus, der die 4. Etage und das Dach ergriff. Viele wertvolle
Innenräume wurden damals für immer vernichtet.

1950s? A fire, which had started here owing to carelessness or drunkenness of some of the soldiers, spread to

by the spacious room with a lavishly decorated

However, the Club Malá Dvorana offers more in

Dvorana Club is increased by the human dimension. Mr. Hejcman, the manager of the restaurant,

Pupp Golf Cup 2010
Před pěti lety vznikla myšlenka uspořádat golfový
turnaj pro obchodní partnery Grandhotelu Pupp.
Postupem let se připojil záměr podpořit z výtěžku
tohoto turnaje veřejně prospěšné projekty. Minulý
rok tak mohla hlavní organizátorka turnaje, generální ředitelka Grandhotelu Pupp Andrea-Pfeffer
Ferklová, předat 30.000 Kč domovu pro osoby se
zdravotním postižením. Letošní pátý ročník podporuje projekt Pink Ribbon Golf, který v České
republice realizuje organizace Aliance žen s rakovinou prsu. Malá růžová stužka Pink Ribbon je
výrazem solidarity hráčů golfu s pacientkami
s touto chorobou a startovné bude věnováno
právě tomuto projektu.

Der Pupp Golf Cup 2010
Vor fünf Jahren entstand die Idee, ein Golfturnier
für die Geschäftspartner vom Grandhotel Pupp zu
veranstalten. Im Laufe der Jahre kam die Absicht
aus dem Erlös dieses Turniers gemeinnützige
Projekte zu unterstützen hinzu. Letztes Jahr konnte
so die Hauptorganisatorin des Turniers, die
Generaldirektorin vom Grandhotel Pupp Frau
Andrea Pfeffer-Ferklová, 30.000 Kč dem
Wohnheim für gesundheitlich benachteiligte Leute
übergeben. Der diesjährige fünfte Jahrgang unterstützt das Projekt Pink Ribbon Golf, das in der
Tschechischen Republik die Organisation Allianz
der Frauen mit Brustkrebs verwirklicht. Ein kleines rosa Bändchen Pink Ribbon ist ein
Solidaritätsausdruck der Golfspieler mit den
Patientinnen mit dieser Krankheit und das
Startgeld wird gerade diesem Projekt gewidmet.

The Grandhotel Pupp was the very first hotel out of
Prague which offered a new Rest and Shop service
– it was before the International Film Festival. It follows Prague hotels Marriott, Crowne Plaza, Best
Western or Kings Court which have also introduced
this exclusive shopping service. The guest of the hotel, like in the In-flight Shopping system on the board
of planes, can choose products of prestige brands for
attractive prices from the comfort of his room. The
Rest and Shop catalogue contains an assortment of
goods for all categories of age, for men, women and
children. Products of brands like Montblanc, Gucci,
J.O. Wright or Versace, Prada, Pierre Cardin, Dior
and others include luxury perfumes, fashion accessories, watches, pens and toys. Goods are delivered to
the guest’s room immediately after they have been
chosen. The service has also been extended by
a long-service programme whose system is based on
gift vouchers for each purchase – a food & beverage
credit which can be used during the next visits. The

MALKOVICH
Grandhotel Pupp hostil v létě roku 2009 významného
amerického herce, režiséra a producenta Johna
Malkoviche. Patřil k nejsledovanějším hvězdám 44. ročníku Mezinárodního filmového festivalu; vždyť si
z Karlových Varů odvezl Cenu za mimořádný umělecký
přínos světové kinematografii. Jeho filmografie čítá na
sedm desítek filmů, na dalších deseti se podílel jako
producent a pod dvěma snímky je podepsán jako režisér. Právě celovečerní režijní debut Tanečník seshora se
promítal v Karlových Varech.
John Malkovich vystudoval ekologii, od níž ovšem
­utekl k divadlu. Ve třiadvaceti letech založil v Chicagu
avantgardní divadelní soubor Steppenwolf Theatre
Company. Úspěch u filmu na sebe nenechal dlouho
čekat. Svůj mimořádně široký výrazový rejstřík uplatnil
např. v psychologickém dramatu Místa v srdci a v ak­
čním snímku S nasazením života. Oba mu vynesly nominaci na Oscara. Upozornil na sebe např. ve filmu
O myších a lidech a oscarovém dramatu Nebezpečné
známosti, diváky si podmanil ve Smrti obchodního
cestujícího. Zřejmě nejpodivnější roli dostal ve fantaskní
psychologické tragikomedii nazvané V kůži Johna
Malkoviche, kde ztvárnil sám sebe. V Karlových Varech
na sebe prozradil, že ročně přečte několik set scénářů,
rád by pracoval s režiséry Woody Allenem, Peterem
Greenwayem či např. s bratry Coeny. John Malkovich
působil na karlovarském filmovém festivalu skromně
a přátelsky. Potkat jste ho mohli v džínách a teniskách
zvaných conversky. Ač běžně autogram neposkytuje,
sběratelům je tu ochotně věnoval, se zaměstnanci
Grandhotelu Pupp se rád vyfotografoval v Zrcadlovém
sále. A pokud byste chtěli zažít úchvatný výhled
z Grandhotelu na lázeňské město, jaký měl John
Malkovich, ubytujte se v apartmá č. 255, které nese
jméno Antonína Dvořáka.

Das Grandhotel Pupp bewirtete im Sommer 2009 den
bedeutenden amerikanischen Schauspieler, Regisseur
und Produzenten John Malkovich. Er gehörte zu den
meist beobachteten Stars des 44. Internationalen
Filmfestivals; er erhielt ja in Karlsbad den Preis für den
außergewöhnlichen künstlerischen Beitrag der
Weltkinematografie. Seine Filmografie zählt an die siebzig Filme, an weiteren zehn beteiligte er sich als
Produzent und unter zwei Filmaufnahmen ist er als
Regisseur unterschrieben. Gerade sein abendfüllendes

Regiedebüt Der Obrist und die
Tänzerin (The Dancer Upstairs) zeigte
man in Karlsbad.
John Malkovich studierte Ökologie,
wovor er aber zum Theater flüchtete.
In seinen dreiundzwanzig Jahren gründete er in Chicago das avantgardistische Theaterensemble Steppenwolf
Theatre Company. Der Erfolg beim
Film ließ auf sich nicht lange warten.
Sein außergewöhnlich breites
Ausdrucksverzeichnis brachte er zur
Geltung z. B. im psychologischen
Drama Ein Platz im Herzen und im
Actionfilm In the Line of Fire – Die
zweite Chance. Beide brachten ihm
eine Oscarnomination. Er machte auf
sich aufmerksam z. B. im Film Von
Mäusen und Menschen und im Oscar-Drama
Gefährliche Liebschaften, die Zuschauer gewann er im
Film Tod eines Handelsreisenden. Wahrscheinlich die
merkwürdigste Rolle bekam er in der fantasiepsychologischen Tragikomödie Being John Malkovich, wo er
sich selbst darstellte. In Karlsbad verriet er auf sich,
dass er jährlich einige Hunderte Drehbücher liest, er
würde gern mit den Regisseuren Woody Allen, Peter
Greenway oder z. B. mit den Coen Brüdern arbeiten.
John Malkovich wirkte am Karlsbader Filmfestival be­
scheiden und freundlich. Man konnte ihn in Jeans und
Converse Tennisschuhen treffen. Obwohl er normalerweise ein Autogramm nicht gibt, den Sammlern widmete er es gern, mit den Angestellten von Grandhotel
Pupp fotografierte er sich gern im Spiegelsaal. Und falls
Sie einen überwältigenden Ausblick vom Grandhotel
auf die Kurstadt, welchen John Malkovich hatte, erleben möchten, unterkommen Sie im Appartement Nr.

The Grandhotel Pupp welcomed the famous American
actor, director and producer John Malkovich in the
summer of 2009. He ranked as one of the closely watched stars of the 44th year of the International Film
Festival; after all he was awarded the Prize for
Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema in Karlovy
Vary. His filmography includes about seventy films; he
has participated in further ten films as a producer and
has directed two more films. The full-length film The
Dancer Upstairs, which was shown in Karlovy Vary,
has been the first film he directed.
John Malkovich got a degree in ecology; however, he
left it for theatre. He founded the avant-garde
Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago at the age of
twenty-three. And he did not have to wait long for
success in film. He used his ability to perform a wide
range of different characters in the psychological drama
Places in the Heart and in the action film In the Line of
Fire. Both brought him an Oscar nomination. He also
drew attention to himself in the films About Mice and
Men and the Oscar-winning drama Dangerous Liaisons
and he enthralled the audience in Death of a Salesman.
His probably strangest part was that in the fanciful
psychological tragicomedy called Being John Malkovich
where he played himself. He said in Karlovy Vary that
he read several hundreds of screen books every year;
he would like to work with the directors Woody Allen,
Peter Greenway or the Coen brothers. John Malkovich
behaved modestly and was very friendly at the Karlovy
Vary film festival. You could meet him in jeans and
sneakers. Though he usually does not give autographs,
he gave them to fans willingly here and he did not mind
being photographed with the staff of the Grandhotel
Pupp in the Mirror Hall. And if you want to experience
the same wonderful view of the spa town from the
Grandhotel Pupp as John Malovich did, hire suite No.
255, which was named after Antonín Dvořák.

V listopadu roku 1892 byla zahájena demolice
starých sálů Českého i Saského. Neprodleně po
demolici sálů započala výstavba moderního hotelu
podle nejnovějších stavebních a designových trendů v duchu pozdního historismu a s nenápadnými
ohlasy nastupující secese. Projekty velkolepé novostavby Grandhotelu Pupp zpracovali na základě
objednávky již zmínění vídeňští architekti Příhoda
a Němeček. V roce 1893 byla otevřena dokončená část nového hotelu na místě bývalého Saského
sálu, trakt na místě Českého sálu byl ještě ve výstavbě. Otevření přestavěného Grand­hotelu Pupp
se uskutečnilo k zahájení sezóny 13. května roku
1894. Bylo velkou společenskou událostí, jež
svým významem dalece přesahovala rámec
Karlových Varů. Prvním hotelovým hostem, jenž
si v novém Grandhotelu Pupp pronajal pokoj, byl
sultán z Johore. Vše bylo v luxusním hotelu vybaveno co nejlépe a do všech detailů. Paní Marie
Pupp-Mattoni o tom ve svých rodinných memoárech píše:
Pokoje byly vybaveny vším myslitelným komfortem. Restaurační sály působily svou štukaturou zdí
noblesně a vkusně na každé oko. Zdi byly zčásti
pokryty gobelíny. Nábytek, lustry a další svítidla
jsou všechny v nejmodernějším stylu. Celý hotel je
vybaven elektrickým světlem. Těžké velurové koberce a velká zrcadla s květinovými girlandami završují výzdobu sálů, k nimž přiléhá veranda.

Velourteppiche, die großen Spiegel mit Blumen­
girlanden umrankt, vervollständigen die Aus­
schmückung der Säle, an die sich die Veranda
schließt. Der Cour d´honneur, der die Höhe zweier Stockwerke zeigt, ist von einem Dache mit
Glasmalerei überwölbt, das von Karyatiden getragen wird. Die Scheiben, in den Korridor der ersten
Etage ausmündend, sind ebenfalls mit Glasmalerei
versehen, was besonders bei Beleuchtung
prachtvoll ist, da die Blumen und Arabesken dann
plastisch hervortreten. Das neue Grandhotel war
vom 1. April, bis zum 15. Oktober saisonbedingt
geöffnet. Als junge Kräfte kamen in die
Gesellschaftsleitung im Jahre 1896 die Herrn Karl
und Julius Pupp, die Söhne von Anton Pupp. Karl
Pupp wurde Hoteldirektor. Julius Pupp Junior
führte die Küche und die Keller. Am 26. Juni 1897
fand in Karlsbad auf Anlass der Firma Mattoni das
erste Blumenkorso statt, das zu einer beliebten
Karlsbader Tradition und Attraktion für die
Einheimischen, sowie für die Kurgäste wurde. Um
halb vier Nachmittag setzte sich der Blumenumzug in
Bewegung. An der Spitze ritten in mittelalterlichen
Kostümen auf Pferden ein sog. Herold und zwei
Trompeter mit Fanfaren. Es folgte eine Kavalkade
von 16 Reitern, ein weiß geschmückter Wagen des
Fürsten Max Egon von Fürstenberg. Weiter fuhren
Wagen in bunter Ausstattung - Zweigespann,
Viergespann, Kleinwagen von Ponys gezogen,
Kabrioletts von Eseln gezogen, Kutschen, alle schön
mit Blumen geschmückt. Am Korso nahmen 50 allegorische Wagen teil. Am Grandhotel Pupp stand eine Paradebühne mit einer Bewertungs­kommission.
Die Blumenpromenade war ein neuzeitiger
Nachklang der einstigen großen Adelsfeiern in der
Puppischen Allee. Im Jahre 1898 entschlossen sich
nach langen Überlegungen die drei Brüder, Julius,
Heinrich und Anton, ihr luxuriöses Imperium zu
verkaufen. Wenn die geplante Transaktion gelungen wäre, würde das Grandhotel Pupp heute wahr­
scheinlich anders heißen. Am 26. Oktober 1898
um 12 Uhr sollten alle Rechtshandlungen mit der
Unter­zeichnung der Verträge beendet werden. Auf
einmal teilte Herr Viebard mit, dass es nicht möglich ist, bis zum 15. Dezember 1898 den ganzen

vereinbarten Kaufpreis zu begleichen und dass die
Bezahlung mehr Zeit fordert. Er verlangte, die
Einzahlungsfrist bis zum 1. März 1899 zu verlängern. Er verpflichtete sich in die Hände der Verkäufer
bis zum 1. Januar 1899 die Summe von 150 000
Gulden hinterlegen, als eventuelle Geldbuße dafür,
sollte es nicht gelingen, die Zahlung bis zum 1. März
1899 durchzuführen. Dagegen forderte Herr
Viebard, dass die AG Grandhotel Pupp zu Gunsten
der englischen Gesellschaft 600 000 Gulden als
Sicherung hinterlegen soll, falls der Verkäufer den
Besitz nicht völlig entschulden, oder aus anderen
Gründen von der Transaktion zurücktreten sollte.
Auf diese sehr verdächtigen und komplizierten
Bedingungen gingen die Pupps nicht ein. Die
Verhandlungen wurden beendet und die Pupps
kehr­ten nach Karlsbad zurück. Die Voraussicht
wollte wieder einmal, dass das größte Karlsbader
Hotel weiterhin in den Händen der berühmten
Familie Pupp bleibt.

The Golden Age of the
Grandhotel Pupp after 1890
and Flower Parades
In November 1892, the demolition of the old Czech
and Saxony Halls began. Immediately after the demolition of the halls, the construction of the modern hotel commenced. It was built and designed
according to the most up-to-date construction and
design trends of the time with an eye on history and
a discrete touch of the coming Art Nouveau. The
design of the imposing building of Grandhotel Pupp
was made to order by the mentioned Viennese architects Příhoda and Němeček. The completed section
of the new hotel located on the site of the former
Saxony Hall was opened in 1893, while the wing on
the site of the former Czech Hall was still under construction. The grand opening of the reconstructed
Grandhotel Pupp took place at the beginning of the
spa season on 13 May 1894. It was a glamorous social
event, the significance of which extended far beyond
the boundaries of Carlsbad. The first hotel guest who
booked a room in the new Grandhotel Pupp was the
Sultan of Johore. The luxury hotel was furnished with
maximum effort, with attention to every detail. Marie
Pupp-Mattoni writes the following in her
family memoirs:
The rooms were furnished to provide
utmost comfort. The stucco walls of
the restaurant halls made them appear
quite princely and pleasing for the
eye. The walls were partly covered
with gobelin tapestries. The furniture,
chandeliers and other lights are all
according to the latest fashion. The
whole hotel is equipped with electric
lighting. Heavy suede carpets and large mirrors with flower garlands augment the decoration of the halls,
which are adjoined by a veranda. The

and it is covered with a glass roof decorated with
paintings and supported by caryatids. Glass paintings also decorate the panels leading to the corridor and they look fabulous when illuminated, because the flowers and arabesques protrude from the
glass surface. The new Grandhotel Pupp was open
every season from the 1st of April until the 15th of
October. Karl and Julius Pupp, the sons of Anton
Pupp, joined the company in 1896. Karl Pupp became the hotel manager and Julius Pupp was in charge
of the kitchen and cellars. On 26 June 1897,
a flower parade was organized for the first time by
the Mattoni Company in Carlsbad which has become
a popular tradition for both the locals as well as the
spa guests. At 3.30 pm the flower procession set out.
The parade was headed by a herald and two buglers
dressed in medieval costumes. They were followed
by a cavalcade of 16 riders, a carriage decorated in
white and carrying Prince Max Egon zu Fürstenberg,
which was followed by colorfully decorated carriages
drawn by two or four horses, carts drawn by ponies,
cabriolets drawn by donkeys, and coaches – all beautifully decorated with flowers. The parade featured
some 50 floats. A parade podium was built at
Grandhotel Pupp where a committee evaluated the
participants for awards. The flower parade was an
echo of the long gone festivals of the nobility in the
Pupp Alley. In 1898, following lengthy considerations, brothers Julius, Heinrich and Anton Pupp decided to sell their luxury empire. If the planned transaction were successful, Grandhotel Pupp would
probably have a different name today. At noon on
26 October 1898, all the legal actions were to be
completed by signing the contract. But, suddenly,
Mr. Viebard claimed that it was not possible to settle
the agreed purchase price by 15 December 1898
and that more time was required. He requested the
due date to be extended to 1 March 1899. He undertook to pay an amount of 150,000 guldens to the
seller by 1 January 1899 as a conceivable fine in the
event the settlement was not made by 1 March
1899. In return, Mr. Viebard demanded that AG
Grandhotel Pupp deposit an amount of 600,000
guldens in favor of the English company as security
should the seller fail to clear the property of debts or
withdraw from the transaction due to other reasons.
The Pupps did not accede to these rather suspicious
and complex conditions. Negotiations ended and the
Pupps returned to Carlsbad. It seems that Providence
once again wished the Carlsbad hotel to remain in
the hands of the Pupp family.

Proměny názvu tohoto náměstí ve 20. století
jsou tragikomedií a smutným svědectvím nehynoucí lidské hlouposti. V 19. století bylo náměstí
zastavěné, takže vlastně náměstím bylo pouze
z části. Nazývalo se tak pouze prostranství před
divadlem, plácek u Vřídelní kolonády nesl jméno
dr. Davida Bechera. Dnešní náměstí vzniklo před
první světovou válkou demolicemi památných
domů (Zlatý štít, Modrá loď s divadelní kavárnou ad.). Do půlky 30. let se místo nejmenovalo
nijak, potom už šla jména ráz na ráz, jak doba
velela: Adolf Hitler Platz, náměstí dr. E. Beneše,
Leninovo náměstí. Po roce 1989 se s úlevou
vrátilo náměstí Divadelní. Podává si zde ruku
secese s historismem, Karlovy Vary zdraví Vídeň

Kubismem dotčený hotel Central do tohoto intimního dialogu jen slabě přizvukuje, stejně jako
novostavby vedle něj, které nahradily zchátralý
blok Terminus. Po celou sezónu kvetoucí krásně
upravený park zve k zastavení a návratu o několik století zpět - alespoň v myšlenkách.

Der Theaterplatz
Die Namensänderungen von diesem Marktplatz
im 20. Jahrhundert sind eine Tragikomödie und
ein trauriges Zeugnis der unvergänglichen
menschlichen Dummheit. Im 19. Jahrhundert war
der Platz bebaut, also war er ein Marktplatz nur
zum Teil. Man nannte so nur den Raum vor dem
Theater, der Platz an der Sprudelkolonnade trug
den Namen von Dr. David Becher. Der heutige
Platz entstand vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg durch
den Abriss von denkwürdigen Häusern (Goldenes

Bis in die Hälfte der 30er Jahre hatte dieser Platz
keinen Namen, danach folgten die Namen Schlag
auf Schlag, wie die Zeit befahl: Adolf Hitler Platz,
Dr. E. Beneš Platz, Lenin Platz. Nach dem Jahre
1989 kehrte mit Erleichterung der Theaterplatz
zurück. Es reicht sich hier die Hand der Jugendstil
mit dem Historismus, Karlsbad begrüßt Wien und
umgekehrt. Das im Jugendstil erbaute (heute verfallende) prachtvolle Gebäude der Sparkasse vom
Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts, erbaut nach dem
Projekt des Karlsbader Architekten Otto Stainl,
unterhält sich über den Platz mit dem Vertreter
des Historismus – dem Stadttheater der Architekten
Helmer und Fellner. Diese Wiener Architekten
übergaben hier im Jahre 1886 zu seiner Zeit eine
ausgezeichnete Arbeit. Das von dem Kubismus
berührte Hotel Central sekundiert in diesen intimen Dialog nur schwach, genauso wie die
Neubauten neben ihm, die den verfallenen Block
Terminus ersetzten. Der die ganze Saison blühende, schön gepflegte Park lädt zum Aufenthalt und
zur Rückkehr um einige Jahrhunderte zurück –
wenigstens in Gedanken.

hello to Vienna and the other way round. The Art
Nouveau (and decaying) splendid building of the
savings bank from the early 20th century, built
from the plans of the Karlovy Vary architect Otto
Stainl, talks to the representative of historism – the
Municipal Theatre of the architects Helmer and
Fellner across the square. The Viennese architects
put in excellent work here in 1886. The Central
Hotel with a touch of cubism enters into the intimate dialogue carefully as well as the new
buildings next to it which replaced the dilapidated
block Terminus. The beautiful park full of flowers
which is kept well all year round attracts you to
stop and go back in time by several centuries – at
least in your mind.

The changes of the name of this
square in the 20th century are

The square was built up in the 19th
century, so only a part of it was
a square in fact. Only the space in
front of the theatre was called like
that, the small space by the Sprudel

LANOVKOU NA DIANU
A JÍZDA LÁZEŇSKÝMI LESY
Lanová dráha začíná hned u Grandhotelu Pupp a byl by
hřích ji nevyužít. Vyveze nás k rozhledně Diana s nejkrásnějším výhledem na celé město. Odsud se lesní silničkou spustíme k chatě Přátelství, odkud je jen 200
m nalevo Rusalčina chata, romantické místo s rozhledem do zalesněného údolí Teplé. Po cestě Přátelství pokračujeme po vrstevnici bukovou alejí až na křižovatku
U Obrazu. Jméno místa i chaty pochází již z roku 1716,
kdy zdejší lesník umístil na rozcestí svatý obrázek. Cesta
Přátelství se odsud začíná svažovat vpravo ke zřícenině
kostela Sv. Linhart a stejnojmenné, dnes zavřené, restauraci. Občerstvíme se proto z vlastních zásob a vydáme se mírným stoupáním silnicí ovíjející Doubskou
horu až na vrchol. Hotel Aberg je sice v rekonstrukci,
otevřený je ale pravoslavný dřevěný kostelík, od nějž je
krásný výhled na západ Krušných hor. Cesta z vrcholu
klesá k chatě U Křížku a zpět k chatě U Obrazu.
Odbočíme vpravo a mírným klesáním dojedeme až
k vodárně. Odsud začíná panoramatická Jungmannova
cesta, která nás za doprovodu výhledů na přehradu
Březová a dále Tepelskou vrchovinu dovede znovu
k Linhartu. Po Tuhnické cestě pozvolna klesáme
nádherným lesem a kolem vyhlídky u chaty Na Skalce
až do centra města. Držíme se však stále cesty pod lesem, která nás dovede nad ulicí Krále Jiřího k Malému
Versailles - zahradní restauraci u jezírka, s výhledem na
kostel sv. Petra a Pavla. Ulicí Petra Velikého a přes
Zámecký vrch sjedeme ke Vřídlu, odkud je to jen několik minut jízdy proti proudu zpět ke Grandhotelu Pupp.

Mit der Seilbahn auf Diana
und die Fahrt durch die Kurwälder
Die Seilbahn beginnt gleich am Grandhotel Pupp und es
wäre eine Sünde sie nicht zu nutzen. Sie fährt uns zum
Aussichtsturm Diana mit dem schönsten Ausblick auf
die ganze Stadt. Von hier aus fährt man hinunter einen
Waldweg zur Hütte Přátelství (Freundschaft), von
hier aus befindet sich nur 200 m links die Hütte
Rusalka, ein romantischer Ort mit dem Blick ins bewaldete Tepltal. Auf dem Weg der Freundschaft fährt man
weiter auf der Höhenschichtlinie durch eine Buchenallee
bis zur Kreuzung U Obrazu (Am Bild). Der Name des
Ortes sowie der Hütte stammt bereits aus dem Jahre 1716,
als ein hiesiger Förster auf der Wegkreuzung ein Heiligbild
setzte. Der Weg der Freundschaft beginnt sich von hier
aus nach rechts zu neigen zur Ruine der hl. Linhart
Kirche und zu dem gleichnamigen, heute geschlossenen,
Restaurant. Man erfrischt sich deshalb aus eigenen
Vorräten und man fährt bergaufwärts mäßig die Straße die
den Berg Doubská hora bis zum Gipfel umkreist. Das
Hotel Aberg wird zwar rekonstruiert, geöffnet ist aber die
orthodoxe hölzerne Kirche, von der es eine schöne
Aussicht auf das westliche Erzgebirge gibt. Der Weg vom
Gipfel senkt zur Hütte O Křížku (Am Kreuz) und
zurück zur Hütte U obrazu (Am Bild). Man biegt rechts

ab und fährt mäßig bergabwärts bis zum Wasserwerk. Von
hier aus beginnt der Panoramatische Jungmann Weg,
der uns begleitet von Aussichten auf die Talsperre
Březová und weiter durch das Gebirge Tepelská vrchovina wieder zum Linhart führt. Auf dem Weg Tuhnická
cesta fährt man durch einen wunderschönen Wald
langsam bergab und entlang der Aussicht an der Hütte
Na Skalce (Am Felsen) bis ins Stadtzentrum. Man hält
sich aber stets den Weg unter dem Wald, der uns über der
Krále Jiřího Straße zum Klein Versailles führt – einem
Gartenrestaurant am See, mit einer Aussicht auf die St.
Peter und Paul Kirche. Die Petra Velikého Straße und
über den Schlossberg fährt man zum Sprudel, von hier
aus ist es nur ein paar Minuten Fahrt flussaufwärts zurück
zum Grandhotel Pupp. Genießen Sie die schöne Radtour
mit vielen Aussichten.

By Cableway to the Outlook Tower Diana
and a Ride Through the Spa Woods
The cableway starts right by the Grandhotel Pupp and
it would be a sin not to use it. It will take you up to the
outlook tower Diana with the most beautiful view of
the whole town. You will take a narrow road running
through the wood from here and it will take you down
to the Friendship Lodge. The Water Nymph
Lodge, a romantic place with a view of the wooded
valley of the Teplá River, is located just 200 m to the
left. You will go on along Friendship Road and through
a beech avenue until you come to the crossroads At
the Picture. The name of the place and the lodge dates from 1716 when the local gamekeeper put a picture
of a saint at the crossroads. Friendship Road starts
declining in the direction of the St. Linhart church
ruin and a restaurant of the same name, which is closed
today. You will therefore have to eat your own snack to
refresh yourself and then you will take the road going
slightly up and winding round the Doubská Hill up to
its top. The Aberg Hotel is being renovated but the
small wooden orthodox church from which you can get
a wonderful view of the western part of the Ore
Mountains, is open. The road from the top slants to the
lodge At the Cross and back to the lodge At the
Picture. You will turn right and go down a gentle hill
until you come to the waterworks. It is here that panoramatic Jungmann’s Road starts which runs to the
Březová Dam and through the Tepelská Highlands
to the St. Linhart again. Then you will follow
Tuhnická Road going down a beautiful part of the
wood and past the view at the Na Skalce Lodge until
you arrive at the town centre. If you keep the road under the wood, it will take you to the Small Versailles
– an open-air restaurant at a small lake and with a view
of St. Peter and Paul Church. You will go along
Peter the Great Street and over the Castle Hill to the
Sprudel and you will need only a few minutes to go
upstream and back to the Grandhotel Pupp. Enjoy the
beautiful ride with a lot of beautiful views.
