During the ravages oí 40 years of
czechoslovak communism, one million
handicapped people lived in isolation,
pushed out of sight into institutions Which
lacked basic conditions for a digniíied liíe,
with little or no rehabilitation facilities.
ln addition, there are thřee and a half
million reiired citizens With small pensions,
many of Whom are very ill and abandoned.
Nearly a quarter of our population relies
upon the help of others. ln the past, the laW
did not alloW any but the closest family
members to Visit the hospitals and
institutions and then only once every two
Weeks at a designated time.
Just like the economy and ecologý the
Czechoslovak health system is devastated,
lacking modern íacilities and equipment.
Although freedom and democracy have
returned to our country. the unfortunate
conditions still prevail. The population
became used to the separation oí the
helpless, afflicted and elderly from the
healthy and young and left them nearly
deíenseless.
