“Traditions and Customs” campaign theme 2015 Experience culinary tradition – An overview Baden-Württemberg Black Forest gateau The Black Forest gateau is known worldwide as BadenWürttemberg's sweetest temptation. Bavaria Beer Bavaria is acclaimed for its German Beer Purity Law and brewery tradition. Upper Franconia has more than 200 breweries and thereby the highest brewery density in the world. Berlin Currywurst (bratwurst with curry sauce) and old Berlin charm The capital offers a culinary range from curried bratwurst stands to the traditional cuisine of pork knuckle with mushy peas and Berliner Weisse, a lager beer with a shot of raspberry or woodruff syrup, to luxury restaurants. Brandenburg Spree Forest gherkins The traditional Spree Forest gherkins are considered the queens amongst the gherkins and are a hearty spicy snack for any time of the day. Bremen Coffee Coffee roasters have a long tradition in this city by the river Weser, and can be sniffed out daily when driving through the city. Hamburg Fish Market Every Sunday morning, thousands of early-birds and night owls travel to the river banks of the Elbe for fish rolls and pickled herrings. Hessen Green Sauce The cold sauce consists of seven herbs and is particularly popular in the region around the city of Frankfurt am Main and is traditionally served with potatoes and hard-boiled eggs. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Fresh fish Fish straight from the fishing vessels is at the top of the restaurants’ menus: freshly smoked, fried or pickled. Lower Saxony East Frisian Tea and “Teetied” (tea time) The traditional “Teetied” is the typical Northern German way of welcoming a guest. In the North Sea Region, the tea is served in a china pot placed on a candle-lit tea warmer. North Rhine-Westphalia Aachener Printen gingerbread The spicy brown gingerbread has been baked in the city of Aachen since 1820. Rhineland-Palatinate Wine The state has six wine-growing regions and 9,382 wineries to offer. Saarland Traditional gourmet The Saarland offers a culinary heritage which is unique in Europe. The state has the highest rate of Michelin stars per resident. Saxony Dresdner “Christstollen” (fruit cake). The Dresdner Christstollen® was first mentioned in 1474 and the pastry, originally conceived for Lent, is today considered a Christmas speciality. Saxony-Anhalt Halloren chocolate balls The Halloren Schokoladenfabrik AG (Halloren Chocolate Factory) founded in 1804 still produces chocolate covered cream and cocoa crème pralines. Schleswig-Holstein Marzipan from Lübeck The production of “Martzapaen” was first mentioned in 1530, and with around a dozen factories gave Lübeck its reputation as “Marzipan Town” after 1800, which lay the foundation for the spread of the confectionery throughout the world. Thuringia Thüringer Rostbratwurst For 600 years the estimated 3,000 butchers of the original Thüringer Rostbratwurst have preferred not to reveal what the recipe contains besides pork, marjoram, cumin and garlic.
