Ulrich, který funkci starosty zastával v letech 1895-1929, měl jasnou představu o moderní podobě metropole východních Čech, a právě oba architekti ji dokázali beze zbytku naplnit. Kotěra také navrhl původní vnitřní zařízení - nábytek do ředitelny a knihovny, sedadla a dřevěné obložení přednáškového sálu, osvětlení i fontánu před hlavním vchodem do budovy. Posledním Gočárovým dílem byly Okresní a finanční úřady (nyní magistrát města) z let 1932-36 . Jan Kotěra Josef Gočár In the footsteps of Gočár and Kotěra architects Auf der Spur der Architekten Gočár und Kotěra If it were not for the friendship of František Ulrich, the Mayor of Hradec Králové and famous architects Jan Kotěra and Josef Gočár, the Czech modern architecture would be short of many innovative designs and works. František Ulrich, who served as the Mayor of Hradec Králové from 1895 until 1929, had a clear idea about the future look of the capital of Eastern Bohemia. Kotěra and Gočár were the only architects capable of fulfilling the dreams of the demanding Mayor. The first design of Jan Kotěra (1871 - 1923) built in Hradec Králové was called the “County house” . This project was implemented in 1903 - 1904 and significantly exceeded the well established average style and type of contemporary construction. Kotěra designed an asymmetric building with richly decorated façade. The ground floor was occupied by a stylish restaurant of the neighbouring Grand hotel while the other floors were occupied by District Authorities. Following the request of the hotel owner, Kotěra designed the annex building with the palm house in 1911. The original and unique layout of hotel rooms and a brand new cinema with 1000 seats was unheard of at that time. The Municipal museum built in 1909 - 1912 is referred to as the first monumental structure of Czech modernism. The design embodied both festive representation and purposefulness creating ideal conditions for daily operation of the museum. Kotěra also designed the interior. You can admire the furniture in director‘s office, the library, seats and wood linings in the lecture hall and last but not least the lighting and fountain in front of the main entrance to the museum. In 1912 Pražský Bridge in Hradec Králové was modified according to Kotěra´s design. Creative elements such as stone rock hand rails, circular structures at bridge heads, floodlight towers and additional arches have upgraded the bridge to one of the architectural beauties of the city. The neighbouring Municipal Electric Company house ! was built only after Kotěra´s death. Josef Gočár (1880 - 1945), who happened to be Kotěra´s student, designed two family houses with Art Noveau sgraffito plaster already in 1905 " when studying at the university. However, the very first distinctive design of Josef Gočár consists of an unconventional staircase alongside the baroque church of Assumption of Virgin Mary dating back to 1909 1910 #. This innovative design significantly marked the development of Czech modern architecture between the two World Wars. Gočár´s masterpieces saw the light of day in 1920´s and 1930´s. First of all the Anglobank (Commercial Bank today) $ was built in 1922 1923. Complemented by other buildings in similar architectural style it created a unique background for T. G. Masaryk‘s memorial by Otto Gutfreund. The Tannery School which now serves as engineering school was built in 1923 - 1924 %. It is typical by its fair-face brickwork. Gočár used the same material in his designs of the state Grammar School &, Council School and Commons School. Large complex of school buildings was complemented by a nursery school built in 1925 - 1928. A set of Czechoslovak Hussite Church buildings referred to as Church of Ambrose built in 1926 - 1928 ' is a perfect example of urban architectural design. Making use of a sharp corner, Gočár designed the church, bishop‘s residence and the vicarage buildings. In doing so, he created a courtyard with columbarium. In 1929 - 1932 Gočár came up with his constructivism design of the National Railways Headquarters. This was the climax of Gočár´s design activities aimed at fulfilment of his unique city zoning plan compiled in 1926 - 1928. Gočár said good bye to the city by designing the District Authority and Revenue Authority building (now used by the municipal authorities) 1932 - 1936 .
