British people prefer living
in a house with a nice lawn
and flower beds.
The house may be a council house
where they pay a rent to the owner

There are different types of houses.
Detached house
This is a house standing on
its own with no
neighbouring houses on
its sides.
There is a small front
garden and a larger one at
the back of the house.
It is the most expensive type of house.
Semidetached house
This type of
house is attached
to a neighbouring
house on one
side only.
Terraced houses
This is a type of
house standing in a
row with other
houses.
It is attached to
neighbouring houses
on both sides.
Blocks of flats
A flat may be owned or
rented, just like houses.
To buy a house or
flat, and pay for it,
you may take out a
mortgage.

Downstairs
There is the kitchen downstairs
and the living room next to it.
Upstairs there are usually two,
three or four bedrooms with
the bathroom and toilet.
