If we discount the Lachian Dances, whose roots date back to the 1890s, and the torso of the symphony Danube, which the composer wanted to complete yet never quite got around to, merely four pieces are left on our list. Three symphonic poems, The Fiddler’s Child, Taras Bulba and The Ballad of Blaník, and, naturally, the celebrated Sinfonietta. %% All the symphonic poems came to life within short intervals, between 1913 and 1920, amid turbulent political events and social tensions. And it was these social problems to which Janáček, among other pieces, responded to with The Fiddler’s Child, which forms a sort of antipode to his male choruses to Petr Bezruč’s verse. Janáček most likely composed the symphonic poem at the end of 1912 or in the first third of the next year. Svatopluk Čech’s poem with a strongly social subtext depicts the story of a fiddler who after his death leaves behind a little daughter. His meagre property is seized by the municipality, which will also take care of the girl. The child is watched over by an “old hag with glasses”, who one night has a vision that the deceased fiddler is standing by the baby’s cradle and playing the violin, alluring the girl to join him in the afterlife so that he can protect her from hunger and poverty. When the reeve arrives at the cabin in the morning, he finds the baby dead and the violin, which was previously hanging on a hook, gone. A significant instrumentation facet of the composition, which compared to the other Janáček orchestral pieces comes across as very intimate and chamber-like, is the application of a quartet of solo violas which, according to Janáček, express “the soul of our people, who live their rough lives in municipal shacks in our villages”, and the solo violin characterising the old fiddler. The symphonic poem was planned to be performed on 15 March 1914 by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, with Janáček himself conducting. Yet the concert failed to materialise, since the composer ultimately cancelled it owing the low number of rehearsals, insufficient for preparing so demanding a work. Janáček, however, heard the piece played during the rehearsals and hence could subsequently revise it. The Fiddler’s Child was finally premiered on 14 November 1917, by Prague’s Orchestral Society, conducted by Otakar Ostrčil. %% Of a totally different nature were the motives that gave rise to Janáček composing the symphonic rhapsody Taras Bulba. His keen interest in Russian culture is well known: he founded the Russian Club in Brno, visited Russia on several occasions, and had a good knowledge of the Russian language. And he simply adored Russian literature, which inspired him to compose a number of works. Janáček read Gogol’s novella Taras Bulba in the original back in 1904/1905, yet he only got down to writing his eponymous composition in the first half of 1915, at the beginning of World War I. Janáček was truly impressed by Gogol, whom he referred to as the “prophet of the Slavs”. Later on, in 1924, he explained the reasons for having chosen the Taras Bulba theme, as well as the ideational content of his work: “Not because he killed his own son for betraying his nation – Part 1 (The Dubno Slaughter); not because of the martyrdom of the other son – Part 2 (Warsaw Plagues); but because there are no fires, no agony that would crush the power of the Russian people – because of these words, which fall into the burning sparks and flames of the stake at which the famous Cossack hetman Taras Bulba met his fate – Part 3 and the end; I composed this rhapsody based on the tale written by N. V. Gogol, in 1915–16 [sic].” Amid the contemporary political situation, Janáček naturally could not expect that such a piece would be performed, especially given that any demonstrations of affection for Russia were immediately sanctioned (the Russian Club in Brno was banned back at the beginning of 1915). Janáček only returned to Taras Bulba in the spring of 1918, when he significantly revised it. The rhapsody was first performed on 9 October 1921 in Brno by the National Theatre Orchestra, conducted by František Neumann. %% The symphonic poem The Ballad of Blaník closes the period of the composer’s creative reflection of the new Czechoslovak state. In all likelihood, Janáček composed it around the turn of 1920. We do not know when he first read Jaroslav Vrchlický’s volume of poetry Peasant Ballads, published in 1885, which contains a ballad based on a Czech legend about a small army of knights sleeping in the mountain of Blaník who will come to rescue the nation at the time of need. Janáček’s piece was premiered under its original title, The Knights of Blaník, at a Brno Conservatory matinee on 21 March 1920 hosted by the Municipal Theatre to mark the 70th birthday of the Czechoslovak President T. G. Masaryk, to whom the composition is dedicated. For the premiere of The Ballad of Blaník, Janáček prepared a concept for a festive speech in which he referred to Vrchlický’s symbolic transformation of arms into ploughshares, in connection with Masaryk’s major work, The Czech Question, describing 5 6 the position of the Czechs and Slovaks within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Yet Janáček ultimately did not deliver his speech. The composition’s premiere, conducted by František Neumann, was a resounding success. Janáček’s triumph was, however, rather tainted, since shortly before the start of the concert he learned that he would not be appointed to the post of director of the Brno Conservatory, which would be finally nationalised. He construed this as immense ingratitude, since he had undoubtedly had the highest merit in the school’s foundation. Janáček went home immediately after the concert, which the audience and performers perceived as a faux pas. %% Sinfonietta is undisputedly Janáček’s most significant orchestral piece. Its genesis dates back to the summer of 1925, when during his visit to his muse Kamila Stösslová in Písek he was impressed by a performance of a military brass band. He composed the piece within a short time in the spring of the next year. It is still, however, unclear whether the initial impulse for Janáček was the Lidové noviny newspaper’s request for a contribution to the 8th National Festival of the Sokol sport and gymnastics movement in Prague or the commission from the organisation’s management to write festive fanfares. Yet it is also possible that Janáček simply wrote the work and subsequently used it for Sokol’s purposes. The autograph of the fanfares was published on 4 June 1926 in Lidové noviny, on the day of the 8th National Sokol Festival under the title Festival Fanfares. They were also supposed to be played two days later from the tower of the Týn Cathedral to accompany the march of 50,000 Sokol enthusiasts across the Old Town Square in Prague, but we do not know whether this actually materialised. The complete Sinfonietta was premiered on 26 June 1926 at the Smetana Hall of the Municipal House in Prague by the Czech Philharmonic, with Václav Talich conducting. Janáček attended the rehearsals and hence must have consulted Talich about some of the retouches in the instrumentation which were made in the score. Janáček was evidently impressed by Talich’s performance, so it comes as no surprise that the conductor’s revisions were included in the score’s first publication, by Universal Edition in 1926. Since 1945, when the original ensemble transformed into a large-scale symphonic orchestra, its principal conductors have included Karel Ančerl, Alois Klíma, Jaroslav Krombholc and František Vajnar. Guest conductors of such remown as Václav Talich, Václav Neumann, Libor Pešek, Charles Munch, Franz Konwitschny, Hermann Scherchen, Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Sir Charles Mackerras have worked with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble has also collaborated with distinguished composers, such as Sergey Prokofiev, Ottorino Respighi, Arthur Honegger, Aram Khachaturian, Ernst Krzenek and Krzysztof Penderecki, giving acclaimed performances of their works. Contemporary music has always been an important part of the orchestra’s repertoire. %% Between 1985 and 2011, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra worked under the consistent leadership of Vladimír Válek, reaching an unprecedented level of professionalism. Since the 2011/12 season the orchestra’s principal conductor has been Ondrej Lenárd, with Ronald Zollman being the main guest conductor. %% The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra currently holds its own concert series in the Dvořák Hall at the Rudolfinum. It has been a regular guest of leading Czech music festivals, including Prague Spring, Smetana’s Litomyšl, Český Krumlov, Dvořák’s Prague and Moravian Autumn. The international success of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra is confirmed by invitations to prestigious stages in Europe and around the world (Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, the United States). Soloists of such distinction as Gabriela Beňačková, Renée Fleming, Denyce Graves, Edita Gruberová, Eva Urbanová, Pierre Amoyal, Stanislav Bunin, Gautier Capuçon, José Cura, Plácido Domingo, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Jonathan Gilad, Sergey Kachatryan, Mischa Maisky, Shlomo Mintz, Raphaël Oleg, Alexander Rudin, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Josef Suk, Bryn Terfel, Viktor Tretjakov and Ramón Vargas have performed with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. %% The orchestra can also boast of a rich recording history. The most recent albums for the Czech label Supraphon include complete recordings of symphonies by Schulhoff, Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, and Martinů (under the baton of Vladimír Válek), the complete symphonic oeuvre of Smetana and a world-premiere recording of piano concertos by Erwin Schulhoff and Václav Jan Tomášek (with Jan Simon 7 on the piano). L E O Š J A N Á Č E K L E O Š J A N Á Č E K L E O Š J A N Á Č E K L E O Š J A N Á Č E K JANÁČKOVA tvorba pro symfonický orchestr není co do počtu příliš rozsáhlá. Tři symfonické básně Šumařovo dítě, Taras Bulba a Balada blanická, a potom samozřejmě proslulá Sinfonietta.
