Art – Paint it Black – Overview
This clip contains a number of issues that can be expanded upon as well as (hopefully) being fun and
entertaining.
The basic plot of the sketch is that Steve has been offered a job presenting a new TV show about art.
The show is called ‘How Art You’ and is co-presented with a character called Janet. Janet has a fear
of the colour black, which makes her feel sad, depressed and sometimes a little angry. Steve, Janet
and the professor character discuss the way colours can affect mood and introduce the concept of
the colour wheel.
The clip plays out that when Janet sees a lot of black she reacts violently and breaks things which
later in the sketch turn out to become acclaimed works of art which the professor character has
bought at an auction. The professor explains that this is because he likes it and that while some
people may like a piece of art others may not, but the children may speculate that the professor
bought it just to spite Steve and make him ‘see red’.
A teacher of art may wish to focus upon the basic forms of art discussed. In the order they appear in
the clip they are;

Landscape / impressionism
Or focus in on the way art can be subjective, and how artists use colour and shapes to invoke a
feeling or reaction in the observer.
Whereas an English teacher may want to focus more on the language of expressing and enquiring
about feelings using various adjectives.

He feels angry and it makes him see red (seeing red is an idiom for becoming
very angry).
Výtvarná výchova– Paint it Black
Zápletka scénky je, že Steve dostane nabídku uvádět novou televizní show o umění. Show nese
název ‘How Art You’ a spoluuvádí ji Janet, která má hrůzu z černé barvy. Je pak smutná, v depresi a
někdy trochu vzteklá. Steve, Janet a profesor vedou diskusi na téma, jak barvy ovlivňují naši náladu,
a prezentují koncept barevného kola.
Když Janet vidí hodně černé, reaguje agresivně a rozbíjí věci, které, jak se později ukáže, jsou
uznávanými uměleckými díly, které profesor přinesl do aukce. Profesor vysvětluje, že díla se mu líbí a
že zatímco některým lidem se dané dílo líbí, jiným naopak se líbit nemusí. Žáci si ovšem mohou
myslet, že profesor přinesl díla proto, aby schválně naštval Steva.
Učitel/ka výtvarné výchovy se může zaměřit na základní formy umění, které jsou v klipu zmíněny. V

Také je možné soustředit se na způsob, jak může být umění subjektivní a jak umělci používají barvu a
tvar, aby v divákovi evokovali pocit nebo reakci.
Učitel/ka angličtiny se zaměří více na jazyk, kterým vyjadřujeme pocity (různá přídavná jména).
