Krásné léto, vážení hosté a milí přátelé,
těší mě, že jste si právě toto období vybrali (nebo ještě vyberete) k návštěvě Karlových Varů a našeho
Grandhotelu Pupp. Budete tak moci v letním počasí obdivovat krásy města u pramenů, procházet se
po nové promenádě s kašnami a vodotrysky, vydávat se do okolních lázeňských lesů a po návratu
odpočívat v zahrádkách kaváren před Rendez-vous i před Café Pupp. Kavárna Café Pupp Vás ráda
uvítá také uvnitř, aby se pochlubila elegantním interiérem, novým designem kavárenského lístku
a bohatou nabídkou výtvorů našich mistrů cukrářů. Sedávají tu i filmové hvězdy či slavní režiséři,

es freut mich, dass Sie sich gerade diese Zeit zum Besuch von Karlsbad und von unserem Grandhotel Pupp aussuchten
(oder noch aussuchen werden). Sie werden so bei dem Sommerwetter die Stadtschönheiten an den Quellen bewundern
können, auf der neuen Promenade mit Brunnen und Fontänen spazieren, sich in die umliegenden Kurwälder begeben und
nach der Rückkehr in den Cafégärten vor Rendez-vous sowie vor Café Pupp ausruhen. Das Café Pupp begrüßt Sie gern
auch innen, um sich mit einem eleganten Innenraum, einem neuen Design des Cafémenus und einem reichen Angebot
an Produkten von unseren Konditormeistern zu rühmen. Es sitzen hier auch die Filmstars oder die berühmten Regisseure,

I am pleased that you have chosen (or will choose) just this season to visit Karlovy Vary and our Grandhotel Pupp. You
will have an opportunity to admire the beauties of the town by the springs, walk along new promenades, set off for the
nearby woods and rest in pavement areas outside the café Rendez-vous and the Café Pupp in warm summer weather. Café
Pupp will be pleased to welcome you inside and boast its elegant interior, a new design of the menu and a wide offer of
our master cooks´products. Film stars or famous directors usually sit here too because lots of them find accommodation in
our hotel during the International Film Festival. Many of them will surely take home a spa cup this year. We had a limited
edition made to remember the 310th foundation anniversary of the Grandhotel Pupp. You can get the souvenir too. You
can visit a renovated open-air cinema near our hotel on warm evenings. If you decide to do so, we will provide you with
a picnic basket. You can reserve it for other occasions too.

Karlovy Vary jsou významným
kongresovým centrem
V termínu 12.-14.4. 2011 se zde konal 7. kongres českých
a slovenských dermatovenerologů. Poté následovalo sympozium pod heslem Caring for skin and well-being. Jednacím
místem byl hotel Thermal, společenské prostory poskytl
Grandhotel Pupp. Ve Slavnostním sále se uskutečnil galavečer jednoho z hlavních partnerů kongresu, firmy Laboratoire
Bioderma, pro téměř 500 hostů. Následující večer zde proběhla prezidentská galavečeře kongresu. Hosté si vychutnali
vybraná jídla vyhlášené puppovské kuchyně - byla to např.
telecí pečeně s čerstvými bylinkami a chřestem jako hlavní
chod. Karlovy Vary navštívilo díky těmto dvěma akcím více
než 1.800 účastníků z celého světa.

tschechischen und slowakischen Dermatovenerologen statt.
Danach folgte ein Symposium unter dem Motto Caring for
skin and well-being. Der Tagungsort war im Hotel Thermal,
die gesellschaftlichen Räume bot das Grandhotel Pupp an.
Im Festsaal fand ein Galaabend eines der Kongresshauptpartner,
der Firma Laboratoire Bioderma, für fast 500 Gäste statt.
Am folgenden Abend gab es im Festsaal das PräsidentenGala-Dinner des Kongresses. Die Gäste kosteten ausgesuchte Speisen der berühmten Pupp-Küche – wie zum Beispiel
Kalbsbraten mit frischen Kräutern und Spargel als Hauptgang.
Karlsbad besuchten dank diesen zwei Veranstaltungen mehr
als 1.800 Teilnehmer aus der ganzen Welt.
Karlovy Vary is an Important
Congress Centre
The 7th congress of Czech and Slovak dermatovenerologists was held just here between the 12th and 14th April
2011. It was followed by a symposium whose motto was
Caring For Skin and Well-Being. The conference place was
the Hotel Thermal while the Grandhotel Pupp provided
social rooms. The gala evening of one of the main partners
of the congress, the firm Laboratoire Bioderma, for almost
500 guests, took place in the Festive Hall. The presidential
gala dinner of the congress was held in the Festive Hall next
evening. The guests enjoyed delicious dishes of the renowned cuisine of the Grandhotel Pupp – it was roast veal

with fresh herbs and asparagus as a main course. Karlovy
Vary was visited by more than 1,800 participants from the
whole world thanks to these two events.

v Poštovním dvoře, průvod
v dobových kostýmech po promenádě a maškarní bál
v Císařských lázních. Karlovy
Vary bývaly dostaveníčkem evropské smetánky po staletí,
i to letošní setkání téměř pěti set šlechticů přineslo světovým
lázním náležitou noblesu a věhlas.

Die Edelleute aus ganz Europa trafen sich im heutigen
Karlsbad, dieses Jahr bereits zum fünfzehnten Mal. Die noblen Damen und die eleganten Herren besuchten den
Begrüßungsball im Hotel Imperial, den Pferderenntag auf
der Pferderennbahn in Dvory (Maierhöfen), den Frühlingsball
im Grandhotel Pupp, eine Messe in der Maria Magdalena
Kirche, ein festliches Mittagessen im Posthof, einen Umzug
in historischen Kostümen auf der Promenade und einen
Maskenball im Kaiserbad. Karlsbad war Jahrhunderte lang
ein Treffpunkt der europäischen Elite, auch das diesjährige
Treffen von fast fünfhundert Adeligen brachte dem Weltkurort
die zugehörige Noblesse und Ruhm.
Rendezvous of Aristocrats
Aristocrats from whole Europe have met in Karlovy Vary for
the fifteenth time already. Noble ladies and smart gentlemen
took part in the welcoming ball in the Imperial Hotel, the
racing day at the race court in Dvory, the Spring Ball in the
Grandhotel Pupp, the mass in the Maria Magdalena Church,
a gala dinner at the Post Court, the parade in period costumes along the promenade and a fancy dress ball in the

Imperial Spa Building. Karlovy Vary used to be a place
where the European cream of society met for centuries and
this year’s meeting of almost five hundred aristocrats brought
the world-famous spa nobleness and fame again.
Velkolepé zahájení lázeňské sezóny
Vždy první květnový víkend se v Karlových Varech slavnostně otevírá letní lázeňská sezóna. Její zahájení předznamenal 6. května slavnostní koncert v Městském divadle
s předáním Ceny města a udělením čestného občanství.
7. května pak na Mlýnské kolonádě prohlásil primátor
353. lázeňskou sezónu za zahájenou, mladí divadelníci
předvedli pověst o objevení léčivé vody, proběhl ceremoniál svěcení pramenů a celé město vítalo novou sezónu bohatým kulturním programem na všech prostranstvích a pódiích města. Muzikanti, divadelníci, tanečníci a mažoretky
měli plné ruce i nohy práce. Městem pak prošel alegorický
průvod v historických kostýmech v čele se zakladatelem
města Karlem IV. Město Karlovy Vary pozvalo na závěr dne
všechny čestné hosty do Grandhotelu Pupp na James Bond
Gala Evening, který byl zakončen velkým ohňostrojem.

allegorischer Umzug in historischen Kostümen, angeführt
von dem Gründer der Stadt, Karl IV. Die Stadt Karlsbad lud
zum Abschluss des Tages alle Ehrengäste ins Grandhotel
Pupp auf den James Bond Galaabend ein, der mit einem
großen Feuerwerk abgeschlossen wurde.

Eröffnung der Kursaison
Immer das erste Maiwochenende wird in Karlsbad die
Sommerkursaison feierlich eröffnet. Ihre Eröffnung zeichnete am 6. Mai ein Festkonzert im Stadttheater vor. Mit der
Verleihung des Stadtpreises und der Ehrenbürgerschaft. Am
7. Mai erklärte dann der Oberbürgermeister die 653.
Kursaison für eröffnet, die jungen Theaterspieler spielten

The opening of the summer spa season always takes place in
Karlovy Vary at the first May weekend. The opening was augured with a gala concert in the Municipal Theatre on the 6th
May and the presentation of the Prize of the Town and honorary citizenship granting. The mayor of the town declared the
653rd spa season open on the 7th May, young artists performed the legend about the discovery of curative water, mineral
springs were consecrated and the whole town welcomed the
new spa season with a rich programme in all places and on all
stages in the town. Musicians, actors, dancers and majorettes
were extremely busy. Then a parade with floats and people in
historical costumes led by the founder of the town Charles IV
went through the town. After that the town of Karlovy Vary
invited all guests of honour to the James Bond Gala Evening in
the Grandhotel Pupp which was finished with a big firework.

Porcelánové slavnosti
Krásné porcelánové a keramické zboží bylo možno během
slavnostního zahájení lázeňské sezóny dva dny nakupovat
přímo před Grandhotelem Pupp, kde vyrostlo dvacet stánků porcelánového trhu společnosti Thun 1794. K dobrým
nákupům vyhrávala muzika a voněly kulinářské speciality
z terasy Rendez-vous.

Während der feierlichen Eröffnung der Kursaison war es
möglich zwei Tage lang die schöne Porzellan- und Keramik
ware direkt vor dem Grandhotel Pupp einzukaufen. Hier
gab es zwanzig Stände am Porzellanmarkt der Gesellschaft
Thun 1794. Zu guten Einkäufen spielte die Musik und es
dufteten die kulinarischen Spezialitäten von der Rendezvous Terrasse.
Festival of Porcelain
It was possible to buy beautiful porcelain and ceramic goods
directly in front of the Grandhotel Pupp, where twenty stalls
of the Company Thun 1974 stood on the two days of the
opening of the spa season. Music and the smell of culinary
specialties from the Rendez-vous terrace created a pleasant
atmosphere.
Grandhotelu Pupp Petr Jiřík. Za 4 hodiny se vydalo na 3.000
pokrmů, koktejlů, nápojů. Nechyběl ani běh číšníků, tradiční
závod v bílých košilích s motýlkem, vycházející z filmové honičky filmu Vrchní, prchni, natáčené v Karlových Varech.

Man wetteiferte zum Bei
spiel im Entknochen des
Hähnchens, im Fisch portionieren oder in der Cocktail
Vorbereitung. Es stellten sich 9 gastronomische Betriebe vor,
unter ihnen auch das Team vom Grandhotel Pupp. Im
Entknochen des Hähnchens gewann der Koch aus dem
Grandhotel Pupp, Petr Jiřík. Binnen 4 Stunden servierte
man an die 3000 Speisen, Cocktails und weitere Getränke.
Natürlich konnte der Kellnerlauf nicht fehlen, ein traditioneller Wettlauf in weißen Hemden mit Fliegen. Dieser wurde
von der Verfolgungsjagd in dem Film Vrchní prchni (Lauf,
Ober, lauf!) inspiriert, die in Karlsbad gedreht wurde.
Food Festival
The Karlovy Vary gastronomy festival full of tasting and
competitions attracted and enjoyed gourmets. They competed
in e.g. chicken boning, fish carving or cocktail mixing. 9 gastronomic departments presented themselves including the
one from the Grandhotel Pupp. The cook from the Grandhotel
Pupp Petr Jiřík won the competition in chicken boning. About
3,000 meals, cocktails and other beverages were served within four hours. You could also see the traditional Run of
Waiters dressed in white shirts and with bowties which was
based on the scene from the film Waiter, Run for It.
Food Festival
Labužníky opět přilákal a pobavil karlovarský gastronomický
svátek plný ochutnávání a soutěží. Soutěžilo se například ve
vykosťování kuřat, porcování ryb, přípravě koktejlů.
Prezentovalo se 9 gastronomických provozů, mezi nimi i tým

Jaký máte vztah ke Grandhotelu Pupp?
Grandhotel Pupp znám méně než třeba prezident festivalu
Jiří Bartoška, protože bydlívám v hotelu Thermal, kde je
kancelář programového oddělení. Ale kdykoli Grandhotel
Pupp navštívím, vždy znovu obdivuji, s jakou velkorysostí
byl architektonicky vybudován a renovován: třeba secesní
vitrážový strop Slavnostního sálu je něco naprosto úžasného.
A při slavnostních obědech nebo večeřích s festivalovými
hosty vysoce oceňuji i gastronomické kvality hotelu.
PhDr. Evu Zaoralovou zná kulturní veřejnost jako
filmovou teoretičku, která má velkou zásluhu o popularizaci
české kinematografie ve světě, jako členku odborných porot
významných zahraničních filmových festivalů, ale především
jako dlouholetou programovou ředitelku karlovarského
Mezinárodního filmového festivalu. Má velký podíl na
vysoké úrovni a prestiži tohoto filmového svátku. Od
letošního roku je jeho uměleckou poradkyní.
28. října 2010 udělil prezident České republiky Evě
Zaoralové medaili Za zásluhy v oblasti kultury a 6. května
2011 převzala z rukou primátora Karlových Varů titul
Čestná občanka města.

Karlovy Vary jsou tak jedinečné, že si je člověk musí
zamilovat. Kde jinde najdete tak úžasnou harmonii
architektonických skvostů a přírodních krás jako v historické
části vašeho města? Karlovy Vary se mi líbily, už když
jsem přijela poprvé na Mezinárodní filmový festival jako
novinářka, ale tehdy, před víc než třiceti lety, mě město
zaujalo víc půvabem říčky Teplé a lesů kolem než domů – ty
byly tehdy šedé a otlučené.
Máte ve Varech své oblíbené místo?
Dokud jsem se nezačala podílet na pořádání festivalu,
měla jsem víc času chodit po hřebenech okolních kopců
a obdivovat vyhlídková místa. V posledních letech trávím
tolik času povinnostmi, že nanejvýš jdu pěšky podle řeky
z Thermalu k Puppu. Na téhle procházce se pokaždé
zastavím u nádherného obrovského platanu na okraji parku,
který míjím cestou k Lázním III.

Co byste vzkázala čtenářům Pupp Journalu?
Samozřejmě, aby nezapomněli navštívit 46. MFF Karlovy
Vary, který probíhá v prvním červencovém týdnu. I letos
jsem připravovala program se svými mladšími kolegy,
tentokrát ve funkci umělecké poradkyně, a mohu čtenáře
ujistit, že jako diváci se seznámí se spoustou pozoruhodných
nových filmů z celého světa a s několika zajímavými
retrospektivními přehlídkami. Určitě nebudou chybět ani
osobnosti dodávající našemu festivalu lesk.

EHRENBÜRGERIN DER STADT
PhDr. Eva Zaoralová kennen die Kulturliebhaber
als eine Filmtheoretikerin, die sich beträchtlich für die
Popularisierung der tschechischen Kinematografie in der
Welt einsetzte, als Mitglied der Fachjurys auf bedeutenden
ausländischen Filmfestspielen, aber vor allem als langjährige
Programmdirektorin des Karlsbader Internationalen
Filmfestivals. Sie hat großen Anteil am hohen Niveau und
Prestige dieses Filmfestes. Seit diesem Jahr ist sie seine
künstlerische Beraterin.
Am 28. Oktober 2010 verlieh der Präsident der Tsche
chischen Republik Eva Zaoralová die Medaille Für den
Verdienst im Bereich der Kultur und am 6. Mai 2011
übernahm sie vom Oberbürgermeister von Karlsbad den
Titel Ehrenbürgerin der Stadt.
Ich weiß, dass Sie Karlsbad lieb gewonnen haben.
Warum?
Karlsbad ist so einmalig, dass man es lieb gewinnen muss.
Wo anders findet man so eine erstaunliche Harmonie der

architektonischen Juwelen und der Naturschönheiten als im
historischen Teil eurer Stadt? Karlsbad gefiel mir, bereits
als ich das erste Mal zum Internationalen Filmfestival als
Journalistin kam, aber damals, vor mehr als dreißig Jahren,
fesselte mich die Stadt mehr mit der Schönheit des Flusses
Tepl und der umliegenden Wälder als der Häuser – diese
waren damals grau und abgeschlagen.
Haben Sie in Karlsbad Ihren Lieblingsplatz?
Bevor ich mich an der Festivalveranstaltung beteiligen
begann, hatte ich mehr Zeit in den umliegenden Hügeln
spazieren zu gehen und die Aussichtsstellen zu bewundern.
In den letzten Jahren widme ich den Pflichten so viel Zeit,
dass ich höchstens zu Fuß entlang des Flusses vom Thermal
zum Pupp gehe. Auf diesem Spaziergang bleibe ich jedes
Mal an der wunderschönen riesigen Platane am Rande des
Parks stehen, an der ich am Weg zum Bad III vorbeigehe.
Welche Beziehung haben Sie zum Grandhotel Pupp?
Das Grandhotel Pupp kenne ich weniger als zum Beispiel
der Festivalpräsident Jiří Bartoška, weil ich im Hotel
Thermal wohne, wo das Büro der Programmabteilung ist.
Aber wenn auch immer ich das Grandhotel Pupp besuche,
bewundere ich jedes Mal, mit welcher Großzügigkeit es
architektonisch erbaut und renoviert wurde: zum Beispiel
die Jugendstil Vitragendecke des Festsaales ist etwas völlig
Verblüffendes. Und während der festlichen Mittag- oder
Abendessen mit den Festivalgästen schätzte ich sehr auch
die gastronomischen Qualitäten des Hotels.
Was würden Sie den Pupp Journal Lesern mitteilen?
Selbstverständlich, dass sie nicht vergessen das 46.
IFF Karlsbad zu besuchen, das in der ersten Juliwoche
stattfindet. Auch dieses Jahr bereitete ich das Programm mit
meinen jüngeren Kollegen vor, diesmal in der Funktion der
künstlerischen Beraterin, und ich kann den Leser sichern,
dass sie als Zuschauer viele sehenswerte neue Filme aus der
ganzen Welt und einige interessante retrospektive Vorführung
kennenlernen. Bestimmt werden auch die Persönlichkeiten
nicht fehlen, die unserem Festival den Glanz geben.

A FREEMAN OF THE TOWN
The public knows PhDr. Eva Zaoralová as a film theorist
who takes great credit for the popularization of Czech film in
the world, as a member of juries at important film festivals

but, first of all, as a long-standing programme director of the
Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Her contribution
to the high standards and prestige of this festival of film is
crucial. She has been its artistic adviser since this year.
The President of the Czech Republic conferred the Medal
for Merit in the Field of Culture on Eva Zaoralová on
the 28th October 2010 and the Mayor of Karlovy Vary
presented her with the title the Freeman of the Town on
the 6th May 2011.
I know that you fell in love with Karlovy Vary. Why?
Karlovy Vary is so unique that you just have to fall in love
with it. Where else can you find such a fascinating harmony
of architectural jewels and the beauties of nature as you can
see in the historical part of the town? I already liked Karlovy
Vary when I arrived at the International Film Festival as
a journalist for the first time but in those days, more than
thirty years ago, I was more impressed by the beauty of the
Teplá River and surrounding woods than by houses – they
were damaged and shabby.
Have you got your favourite places in Karlovy Vary?
I had had more time to walk along the ridges of the hills in the
surroundings and to admire the viewing points before I started
taking part in the organization of the festival. But I have been
so busy in recent years that I at most walk along the river from
the Thermal to the Pupp. I always stop at the beautiful huge
plane tree which I pass on my way to Spa Building III.
What is your relation to the Grandhotel Pupp?
I know the Grandhotel Pupp less than e.g. the director of the
festival Jiří Bartoška because I usually stay in the Thermal
Hotel where the office of the programme department is.
But any time I visit the Grandhotel Pupp, I admire the
generosity it was built and renovated with: for example the
Art Nouveau stained glass ceiling of the Festive Hall is just
amazing. And I highly appreciate the gastronomic qualities
of the hotel during gala dinners with festival guests.
What message would you send to the readers
of the Pupp Journal?
That they should not forget to visit the 46th IFF Karlovy Vary
which will be held in the first week in July, of course. This
year, too, I have prepared the programme with my younger
colleagues, this time as an artistic adviser, and I can make
them sure that they will see a number of remarkable new
films from the whole world and some retrospective shows
if they come as cinema visitors. And personalities that add
a touch of glamour to our festival will be here too.

Příběh slavného hotelu
Rozvoj společenského života a lázeňství začátkem 18. století
přinesly v Karlových Varech výstavbu nových objektů. Na
samém konci promenádní cesty postavil v roce 1701 karlovarský starosta a lékárník Andreas Becher za podpory kurfiřta Augusta Saského velký společenský dům Salle de
lÁsemblée, nazývaný Saský sál. Nikdo tehdy netušil, že tak
vznikl první článek řady budov, které se staly základem světoznámého Grandhotelu Pupp. Anglický vyslanec Stepeney
napsal o vzniku Saského sálu: V Karlových Varech jsme postavili dům Salle de lÁsemblée, jenž si vyžádal náklad
2 000 zlatých. Je postaven podle italského návrhu, se čtyřmi
záchody, s pohodlnými lůžkovými odpočívadly a s tajemnými zákoutími. Z Drážďan jsme přivezli na šesti vozech lustry
a zrcadla, jež zkrášlí novou budovu, a 16. dubna 1701 se tu
bude odbývat maškaráda, kde hraběnka Königsmarková
bude představovat Dianu sledovanou šesti nymfami...

Die Geschichte des berühmten Hotels
Der Aufschwung des gesellschaftlichen Lebens und des
Kurwesens am Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts verursachte in
Karlsbad den Aufbau von neuen Gebäuden. Ganz am Ende
des Promenadenweges baute im Jahre 1701 der Karlsbader
Bürgermeister und Apotheker Andreas Becher unterstützt von
dem sächsischen Kurfürsten August ein großes Gesellschafts
haus Salle de lÁsemblée, genannt der Sächsische Saal.
Niemand ahnte damals, dass so der erste Teil einer Häuser
reihe entstand, die das weltberühmte Grandhotel Pupp bilden
wird. Der englische Gesandte Stepeney schrieb über die
Entstehung des Sächsischen Saales:
Wir haben hier in Karlsbad ein Haus gebaut, das 2 000 fl.
kostet. Es ist von italienischer Erfindung mit vier Retiraden,

Halbdunkelplätzen, Ruhebetten. Wir haben von Dresden
sechs Wagen mit Lüstern und Spiegeln zur Ausschmückung
des Gebäudes mitgebracht und den 16. April sollen wir
eine Maskerade haben, worin die Gräfin Königsmark die
Diana vorstellt und, von 6 Nymphen gefolgt, auftritt.

The Story of the Famous Hotel
The development of social life and balneology resulted in
the construction of new buildings in Karlovy Vary in the
early 18th century. The Karlovy Vary mayor and pharmacist Andreas Becher supported by the elector August of
Saxony had a big social house built at the very end of the
promenade in 1701. It was called Salle de lÁsemblée or,
too, the Saxon Hall. No-one had an idea in those days that
it was the first of a number of buildings which later became
the basis of the world-famous Grandhotel Pupp. The
English ambassador Stepeney wrote about the construction
of the Saxon Hall the following:
We built the Salle de lÁsemblée in Carlsbad and the total
expenses incurred amounted to 2,000 guldens. It is built
according to Italian design, with four powder rooms, mysterious recesses, and comfortable resting places furnished with
sofas. Six carriages brought chandeliers and mirrors from
Dresden to decorate the new building where a bal masqué is
to take place on the 16th of April 1701, at which Countess
Königsmark shall impersonate Diana pursued by six nymphs.

První zmínku o porcelánu v Grandhotelu Pupp najdeme
v dochovaném seznamu inventáře restaurace z roku 1829.
Zařízení restaurace první kategorie bylo poměrně skromné,
ale už tehdy nechyběly ve výbavě drahé soupravy jemného
březovského porcelánu a stříbrné příbory. O kvalitě místního porcelánu byl přesvědčen také Heinrich Pupp, v podnikání nejúspěšnější ze všech Puppů. Uzavřel smlouvu s výrobcem porcelánu ve Staré Roli, Augustem Nowotnym
a začal společně se svým cínem prodávat jeho porcelánové
a kameninové zboží po celém světě. V roce 1845 byla zří-

zena firemní prodejna porcelánu v Linci. V archivech lze
také dohledat, že od roku 1872 byla na krátkou dobu část
dnešního Grandhotelu Pupp v majetku majitelů továrny na
porcelán v Lokti, pánů Heidingera a Ravena.
Kompletní obnova porcelánového nádobí proběhla v hotelu
v roce 1959 opět výrobky z manufaktury v Březové. V létě
roku 1960 byla v hotelu instalována trvalá prodejní výstava
porcelánu, skla a loveckých potřeb. Současnou výstavu porcelánu najdou hosté v prostorách Becher´s Bar Rendez-vous.
Každoročně na jaře a na podzim probíhají před Grandhotelem
Pupp Porcelánové slavnosti. Při podzimní akci jsou navíc stoly
Slavnostního sálu vyzdobeny několika desítkami překrásných
jídelních souprav k různým příležitostem. I letos se můžete
pokochat tradičním českým porcelánem od 2. do 4. září.
V současné době je v Grandhotelu Pupp užíván porcelán
od místního výrobce Thun 1794 a.s. Například v kavárně
si můžete vychutnat kávu ze šálku typu Bernadotte
a pro Grandrestaurant byly vzhledem k aktuálním gastronomickým trendům vybrány nadčasově elegantní komponenty z několika výrobních linií Gourmet, Fingerfood a Leon.

findet man in der erhaltenen Inventarliste des Restaurants aus
dem Jahre 1829. Die Einrichtung vom Restaurant der ersten
Kategorie war ziemlich bescheiden, aber schon damals gab es
in der Ausstattung die teueren feinen Pirkenhammer
Porzellanservice und das Silberbesteck. Über die Qualität des
hiesigen Porzellans war auch Heinrich Pupp überzeugt, der
erfolgreichste Unternehmer der Pupp Familie. Er schloss einen Vertrag mit dem Porzellanhersteller in Stará Role
(Altrohlau), August Nowotny und begann, zusammen mit eigenem Zinn seine Porzellan- und Steingutwaren in die ganze
Welt zu verkaufen. Im Jahre 1845 errichtete er ein
Firmenporzellangeschäft in Linz. In den Archiven kann man
ebenso finden, dass seit dem Jahre 1872 auf kurze Zeit ein
Teil des heutigen Grandhotel Pupp im Eigentum der Besitzer
der Porzellanfabrik in Elbogen, der Herrn Heidinger und
Raven war. Die vollständige Erneuerung des Porzellan
geschirrs geschah im Hotel im Jahre 1959, wieder durch die
Erzeugnisse aus der Manufaktur in Březová (Pirkenhammer).
Im Sommer 1960 wurde im Hotel eine Dauerverkaufs
austellung von Porzellan, Glas und Jagdartikeln errichtet. Die
derzeitige Porzellanausstellung finden die Gäste in der
Becher´s Bar und im Rendez-vous. Jedes Jahr im Frühling
und im Herbst verlaufen vor dem Grandhotel Pupp die
Porzellanfeiern. Während der Herbstveranstaltung sind dazu
die Tische im Festsaal mit einigen Dutzenden wunderschönen
Essservice zu verschiedenen Gelegenheiten geschmückt.
Auch dieses Jahr kann man vom 2. bis zum 4. September das
traditionelle tschechische Porzellan bewundern.
Zurzeit wird im Grandhotel Pupp das Porzellan von dem
hiesigen Hersteller Thun 1794 AG genutzt. Zum Beispiel im
Café kann man den Kaffee aus der Tasse Bernadotte
auskosten und für das Grandrestaurant wurden bezüglich zu
den aktuellen gastronomischen Trends überzeitliche elegante Komponente aus einigen Herstellerlinien Gourmet,
Fingerfood und Leon ausgesucht.

The first record of porcelain in the Grandhotel Pupp can be
found in a preserved inventory list of the restaurant from
1829. The equipment of the first category restaurant was relatively modest, however, it already included expensive sets of
fine porcelain from Březová and silver cutlery. The most successful businessman in the Pupp family, Heinrich Pupp, was
also convinced of the quality of local porcelain. He entered
into a contract with August Nowotny, a porcelain producer in
Stará Role, and started selling his china and earthenware together with his own tinware all over the world. In 1845 a firm
outlet was established in Linz. There is also information in
archives saying that a part of the present Grandhotel Pupp
belonged to the owners of a porcelain factory in Loket,
Heidinger and Raven, for a short time from 1872.
In 1952 all chinaware in the hotel was replaced with new
products from the porcelain factory in Březová again. A permanent selling exhibition of china, glass and hunting articles
was mounted in the hotel in the summer of 1960. The present exhibition of porcelain can be found in the Becher´s
Bar Rendez-vous. Every year in spring and autumn a Festival
of Porcelain is held in front of the Grandhotel Pupp. In autumn the tables in the Festive Hall are decorated with several tens of wonderful service sets for different occasions.
You can feast your eyes on traditional Czech china this year
too – between the 2nd and the 4th September.
At present the Grandhotel Pupp uses china from the local
producer Thun 1794 Co. You can e.g. enjoy coffee from
a Bernadotte cup in the café while timeless components of
several lines such as Gourmet, Fingerfood and Leon have
been chosen for the Grandrestaurant in view of topical
trends in gastronomy.

Ve znamení červených vyzrálých plodů
Zakladatel dynastie Puppů byl cukrář. Přijel do Karlových Varů
v družině hraběte Chotka. Zamiloval se zde - do koho jiného, než
do dcery místního cukráře, Francizky Mitterbachové. Zůstal v lázeňském městě, vstoupil do služeb k cukráři Mitterbachovi a trpělivě čekal třináct dlouhých let na svou lásku. Teprve pak svolil
otec děvčete k svatbě s Johannem Georgem Puppem. Kolik za tu

Der Begründer der Pupp-Dynastie war ein Zuckerbecker. Er kam
nach Karlsbad im Gefolge des Grafen Chotek. Er verliebte sich hier
– in wen anderen, als in die Tochter des hiesigen Zuckerbäckers, in
Franziska Mitterbach. Er blieb in der Kurstadt, er trat in die Dienste
von Zuckerbäcker Mitterbach und wartete geduldig dreizehn lange
Jahre auf seine Liebe. Erst dann stimmte der Vater des Mädchens
der Hochzeit mit Johann Georg Pupp zu. Wie viel Torten, Desserts
und andere Süßigkeiten stellte in dieser Zeit der arme Bräutigam
her! An die Konditortradition hält sich das Grandhotel Pupp bis
heute. Beweis dafür ist das Café Pupp, wo man eines oder auch

The founder of the Pupp dynasty was a confectioner. He came to
Karlovy Vary as a member of Count Chotek´s suite. He fell in love
here – who else with than the local confectioner’s daughter –
Francizka Mitterbach. He stayed in the spa town, entered the confectioner Mitterbach´s service and waited for his beloved for thirteen
long years. Then the father finally agreed with her daughter’s marriage to Johann George Pupp. How many cakes, desserts and other
sweets might the poor groom have created during that time?
The Grandhotel Pupp has followed the tradition of pastry and
cake making until these days. The Café Pupp proves it – you can
taste there one or even more of seven hundred desserts which are

Trocha historie
Vlastní slovo whisky vzniklo z výrazu usquebaugh, pak
uisge beatha a v závěru uiskie, poprvé se objevilo až
v r. 1755 ve slovníku dr. Johnsona. Dohady o tom, kdo
vlastně vynalezl whisky, nebudou asi nikdy končit a Sko
tové to řeší rčením: Irové možná whisky vynalezli, ale my
jsme ji dovedli k dokonalosti.
Ve Skotsku se whisky pálila snad odedávna a téměř vždy
ilegálně. Předpokládá se, že znalost destilace ve Skotsku je
velmi stará, některé odhady vedou až k 5. století. V legendách se praví, že když se král Henry II. v r. 1170 vylodil
v Irsku, jeho oddílům zachutnal tamější nápoj zvaný uisce
beatha. První písemnou zmínku o výrobě najdeme v královských pokladních svitcích, tzv. Scottish Exchequer Rolls
z roku 1494, kde byl králem Jakubem IV. Stuartem vydán
příkaz k dodání 8 bolls ječmene (přes 500 kg) pro mnicha
jménem John Corr na výrobu aqua vitae. Tato zmínka je
poměrně dost důležitá, vzhledem k tomu, že je zde zmiňován ječmen. Předpokládá se totiž, že v dřívějších dobách se
destilát vyráběl z vína.
Z r. 1506 se zachovala poznámka pokladníka krále Jakuba
IV. o nezbytných výdajích za aqua vite. Traduje se, že
v 16. století měl edinburghský cech ranhojičů (což byl
předchůdce Královské lékařské akademie) výsadní právo
na pálení aqua vitae ve městě. Až v r. 1601 byl tento monopol v Edinburghu i v Anglii zrušen královnou Alžbětou I.
a bylo údajně deklarováno, že všichni občané mohou levně
vyrábět tento nápoj, chtějí-li ohřát své zmrzlé žaludky. První
licenci na pálení získala palírna Bushmills v r. 1608,
v Campbeltownu ji získal John Boyl v r. 1609.
V roce 1644 byla zavedena daň z pálení kořalky, a to 2 šilinky a 8 pencí za skotskou pintu, což bylo asi 1,5 litru a každý,
kdo chtěl pálit, si musel koupit licenci. První oficiální zmínka
o palírně je z r. 1690, kdy v Act from the Scottish Parliament
jsou reference o palírně Ferintosh, kterou vlastnil Duncan
Forbes of Culloden (1644-1704), velký příznivec právě korunovaného Williama Oranžského. V r. 1707 byl vydán Act of
Union, stanovující řádnou výši poplatků. V r. 1736 byla
stanovena taxa i pro gin, tzv. Gin Act.
Existují však záznamy, že v r. 1777 na 8 legálních palíren
bylo více jak 400 nelegálních, v r. 1800 jen v oblasti
Campbeltown bylo 292 ilegálních palíren a v celém
Skotsku se jejich počet odhaduje na 14 tisíc. Po dlouhou
dobu trvaly souboje mezi berními úředníky na straně

jedné a ilegálními výrobci a pašeráky na straně druhé.
Černé palírny byly všude - na nepřístupných místech,
v pobřežních jeskyních, ale např. i v kostelích (Free Tron
Church, na hlavní třídě v Edinburghu). A jak je psáno
v Úředních aktech z roku 1798, pálí se i tam, kde neznají
ani pluh. Kořalka totiž při výměnných obchodech sloužila
také jako platidlo.
V roce 1816 byl vydán Small Stills Act, který alespoň částečně umožnil legální pálení, což se projevilo tím, že
v Highlands bylo z 12 hned 57 legálních palíren a v Low
lands ze 24 najednou 68. Teprve v r. 1823 bylo sníženo
daňové zatížení, za poplatek 10 liber byla možnost získat
licenci a legálně v této oblasti podnikat s podmínkou, že
destilační aparát musí mít kapacitu nejméně 40 galonů
(180 litrů). O schválení tohoto zákona se nejvíce zasloužil
Alexander Gordon, čtvrtý vévoda z Gordonu, pod jehož
křídly byla zbudována celá řada palíren, např. i Glenlivet.
Zajímavé je, jak uvádí Mark Skipworth, že
po přijetí tohoto zákona bylo
objeveno 14 tisíc nelegálních
destilačních přístrojů, a to
byl jen malý zlomek všech
domácích palíren.
Známost whisky jako dobrého nápoje byla však stále
velmi malá. Angličané tou
dobou dávali přednost
koňaku, ale v osmdesátých letech 19. století
byla jeho výroba na
dlouhou dobu přerušena, protože francouzské
vinice byly zlikvidovány
škůdcem phylloxera vastatrix. Koňak nebyl, tedy
hledali něco podobného
- a našli konečně whisky.

zum ersten Mal erschien es erst im Jahre 1755 im
Wörterbuch von Dr. Johnson. Der Streit darum, wer eigentlich den Whisky erfand, wird wahrscheinlich nie enden
und die Schotten lösen es mit einem Spruch: Die Iren haben vielleicht den Whisky erfunden, aber wir haben ihn zur
Vollkommenheit gebracht.
In Schottland brannte man Whisky wohl seit jeher und fast
immer illegal. Man vermutet, dass die Kenntnis der
Destillation in Schottland sehr alt ist, manche Schätzungen
reichen bis ins 5. Jahrhundert. Die Legenden erzählen, dass
als sich der König Henry II. im Jahre 1170 in Irland
ausschiffte, schmeckte seinen Truppen das dortige Getränk
genannt uisce beatha. Erste schriftliche Erwähnung über die
Herstellung findet man in den königlichen Kassenrollen, sog.
Scottish Exchequer Rolls aus dem Jahre 1494, wo von dem
König Jakob IV. Stuart der Befehl ausgegeben wurde, 8 bolls
Gerste (über 500 kg) für den Mönch des Namens John Corr
für die Herstellung von aqua vitae zu liefern. Diese
Erwähnung ist ziemlich wichtig, in der Hinsicht dazu, dass
man hier die Gerste erwähnt. Man vermutet nämlich, dass in
den früheren Zeiten das Destillat aus Wein erzeugt wurde.
Aus dem Jahre 1506 blieb eine Bemerkung von dem
Schatzmeister des Königs Jakob IV. über die nötigen Ausgaben
für aqua vite erhalten. Es wird erzählt, dass im 16. Jahrhundert
die Edinburgher Wundarztzunft (was die Vorgängerin der
Königlichen Ärzteakademie war) das Sonderrecht für die
Brennung von aqua vitae in der Stadt hatte. Bis im Jahre
1601 wurde dieser Monopol in Edinburgh sowie in England
von der Königin Elizabeth I. aufgehoben und es wurde angeb
lich verkündet, dass alle Bürger billig dieses Getränk erzeugen können, falls sie ihre gefrorenen Mägen erwärmen wollen. Die erste Lizenz zum Brennen erhielt die Brennerei
Bushmills im Jahre 1608, in Campbeltown erhielt sie angeb
lich John Boyl im Jahre 1609.
Im Jahre 1644 wurde die Schnapsbrennungssteuer eingeführt, und zwar 2 Schilling und 8 Pence für eine schottische
Pinte, was zirka 1,5 Liter war und jeder, der brennen wollte, musste sich eine Lizenz kaufen. Die erste offizielle
Erwähnung über eine Brennerei ist aus dem Jahre 1690, als
im Act from the Scottish Parliament Referenzen über die
Brennerei Ferintosh sind, die Duncan Forbes of Culloden
(1644-1704) besaß, ein großer Beförderer von dem gerade

gekrönten William von Oranien. Im Jahre 1707 wurde der
Act of Union herausgegeben, der die regelrechte Höhe der
Gebühren feststellte. Im Jahre 1736 wurde auch eine Taxe
für den Gin festgelegt, der sog. Gin Act.
Es bestehen aber Anmerkungen, dass im Jahre 1777 auf
8 legale mehr als 400 illegale zufielen, im Jahre 1800 nur
in der Region Campbeltown waren 292 illegale Brennereien
und in ganz Schottland wird ihre Anzahl an die 14 Tausend
geschätzt. Lange Zeit dauerten die Kämpfe zwischen den
Finanzbeamten auf der einen Seite und den illegalen
Herstellern und Schmugglern auf der anderen Seite. Die
Schwarzbrennereien waren überall – an unzugänglichen
Orten, in den Küstenhöhlen, aber z. B. auch in den Kirchen
(Free Tron Church, auf der Hauptstraße in Edinburgh) und
wie in den Amtsakten aus dem Jahre 1798 geschrieben ist,
wird auch dort gebrannt, wo sie nicht einmal den Pflug
kennen. Der Schnaps diente nämlich bei dem Tauschhandel
auch als Zahlungsmittel.
Im Jahre 1816 wurde Small Stills Act herausgegeben, der
wenigstens teilweise das legale Brennen ermöglichte, was
sich damit auswirkte, dass in Highlands von 12, gleich 57
legale Brennereien waren und in Lowlands von 24 auf
einmal 68. Erst im Jahre 1823 wurde die Steuerbelastung
gesenkt, für die Gebühr von 10 Pfund konnte man die
Lizenz bekommen und legal in diesem Bereich mit der
Bedingung zu unternehmen, dass der Destillierapparat ein
Volumen von mindestens 40 Gallonen (180 Liter) haben
muss. Dieses Gesetz wurde vor allem dank Alexander
Gordon verabschiedet, dem vierten Herzog von Gordon,
unter dessen Schutz wurde eine Reihe von Brennereien erbaut, z. B. auch Glenlivet. Interessant ist, wie Mark
Skipworth erwähnt, nachdem dieses Gesetz verabschiedet
worden war, wurden 14 Tausend illegale Destillierungs
apparate entdeckt, und das war nur ein kleiner Bruchteil
aller Hausbrennereien.
Die Bekanntheit von Whisky als eines guten Getränkes war
aber immer noch sehr gering. Die Engländer bevorzugten
zu dieser Zeit Cognac, aber in den achtziger Jahren des
19. Jahrhunderts wurde seine Herstellung für lange Zeit
unterbrochen, weil die französischen Weinberge von dem
Schädling Phylloxera vastatrix vernichtet wurden. Cognac
gab es nicht, also suchte man etwas Ähnliches – und man
fand endlich Whisky.

A BIT OF HISTORY
The word whisky originates from the expression usquebaugh,
then uisge beatha and finally uiskie. It appeared for the first
time in Dr. Johnson’s dictionary in 1755. Conjectures about
who actually invented whisky will probably never have an
end and the Scots use the following saying to tackle this
topic: The Irish might have invented whisky, however, we
brought it to perfection.
Whisky has been made in Scotland since time immemorial,
almost always illegally in the past. Distilling knowledge is
supposed to be very old in Scotland; some of the guesses go
back to the 5th century. Legends have it that when King
Henry II landed in Ireland in 1170, his troops enjoyed the
local beverage called uisce beatha. The first record of its
production can be found in Scottish Exchequer Rolls dating
from 1494. In them, King James IV gave an order that
a monk whose name was John Corr should be delivered
8 bolls (more than 500 kg) of barley so that he could make
aqua vitae. This reference is quite important as barley is
mentioned here and it was originally supposed that the spirit
had been made from wine in earlier times. There is a note by
King James IV´s Chancellor of Exchequer dating from 1506
which mentions inevitable expenses for aqua vitae. It is said
that it was the guild of barber-surgeons (the forerunner of the
Royal Colleges and Faculties in Edinburgh) that had a monopoly on aqua vitae distilling in the town in the 16th century.
It was only in 1601 that Queen Elizabeth I abolished this
monopoly both in Edinburgh and in England and it was allegedly declared that all citizens were allowed to make this
cheap beverage if they wanted to warm their cold stomachs.
The first distilling licences were those of the Bushmills distillery dating from 1608 and of John Boyl from Campbeltown
from 1609. Other references are interesting too, e.g. Sir
Walter Raleigh’s entry about the gift of 32 gallons of uisce
beatha from the Count of Cork or a later note dating from
1651 and saying that more than 5 gallons of uisge beatha had
been drunk at Sir Donald Campbell’s funeral.
In 1644 a tax on distilled spirits was introduced – 2 shillings
and 8 pence for a Scotch pint, which was about 1.5 litres,
and everyone who wanted to distil alcohol, had to buy a licence. The first official record of a distillery dates from 1690.
There are interesting references about the Ferintosh Distillery
in the Act of the Scottish Parliament too. It was owned by
Duncan Forbes of Culloden (1644-1704), an ardent supporter of William of Orange who had just been crowned.

In 1707 the Act of Union was issued which set regular fees. In 1736 the Gin Act, a tax on gin, was
set as well.
However, there are records saying that still in
1777 there were 8 legal but 400 illegal distilleries,
in 1800 there were 292 illegal distilleries just in
the region of Campbeltown and their number was
estimated at 14 thousand in the whole of
Scotland. Black distilleries were everywhere – in
inaccessible places, in caves on the coast but also in churches (Free Tron Church, in the main
street in Edinburgh) and, as it is written in
Official Acts from 1798, alcohol was distilled
even in places where they did not even know the
plough. It was because spirit was used as means
of payment in barters.
In 1816 the Small Stills Act was issued
which at least partly enabled legal distillation. The result was 57 legal distilleries
instead of the original 12 in Highlands
and 68 instead of 24 in Lowlands. It was
only in 1823 that the tax was reduced
and it was possible to get a licence for a
ten-pound-fee and to distil spirit legally on
condition that the distilling apparatus had
a capacity of at least 40 gallons (180 litres). Alexander Gordon, the Fourth Duke
of Gordon, under whose wings a number
of distilleries like Glenlivet were built, had
been most helpful in passing this act. It is
interesting, as Mark Skipworth has it, that
after this act had passed, 14 thousand illegal distilling apparatuses were discovered
– and it was just a small part of all home
distilleries.
However, popularity of whisky was still
very small. The English preferred cognac
in those days, however, in the 1880s its
production was interrupted because
French vineyards were destroyed by the
pest phylloxera vastatrix. There was no
cognac, so they started looking for something similar – and found finally whisky.

Jedna z nejkrásnějších hereček všech dob. Tak označil
Jacqueline Bisset americký časopis Newsweek. Před sedmi
lety ozdobila svou účastí i Mezinárodní filmový festival, na
jehož pozvání do Karlových Varů přijela. Slavná a obdivovaná herečka, skutečná hvězda v tom nejlepším slova
smyslu, byla pochopitelně ubytována v tom nejlepším, co
Karlovy Vary nabízejí - právě v Grandhotelu Pupp.
Jacqueline Bisset (1944) se narodila v anglickém Weybridge.
Francouzské kořeny její matky zřejmě rozhodly o výběru
studia na francouzském lyceu v Londýně. Brzy začala navštěvovat lekce baletu, hodiny herectví a věnovala se i modelingu. Právě její půvab jí otevřel cestu k filmu. A to hned
po boku slavných jmen. První roli ve snímku Dva na cestě
si zahrála vedle Audry Hepburnové, ve filmu Detektiv společně s Frankem Sinatrou. Hvězdou se stala po natočení
snímku Bullitův případ se Stevem McQueenem. České publikum si ji pamatuje z katastrofického filmu Letiště. A popularitu získala bezesporu dvojrolí dívky Christiny a špionky
Ariany v parodii na bondovky Muž z Acapulca, kde po boku
J.P. Belmonda ukázala i komickou a sebeironickou stránku
svého herectví. K jejím nejslavnějším snímkům patří
Americká noc režiséra Françoise Truffaulta. A právě tento
legendární snímek, kterým získala uznání evropské kritiky
i diváků, přijela uvést v roce 2004 v rámci 39. ročníku
Mezinárodního filmového festivalu. Současně zde převzala
i Cenu města Karlovy Vary. „Je to pro mě velká pocta,“
poděkovala tehdy. Když se zeptáte personálu v Grandhotelu
Pupp, jak na slavnou hvězdu vzpomínají, dostanete odpověď: „Chovala se velmi skromně a nenápadně.“

Vor sieben Jahren verschönerte sie auch das Internationale
Filmfestival, auf dessen Einladung sie nach Karlsbad kam.
Eine berühmte und bewunderte Schauspielerin, ein Star im
wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, wohnte natürlich in dem Besten,
was Karlsbad bieten kann – gerade im Grandhotel Pupp.
Jacqueline Bisset (1944) wurde in Weybridge in England
geboren. Die französische Abstammung ihrer Mutter ver
ursachte wahrscheinlich, dass sie am französischen Lyzeum
in London studierte. Bald begann sie die Ballettstunden zu
besuchen, den Schauspielerunterricht und sie trat als Model
auf. Gerade ihr Charme öffnete ihr den Weg zum Film. Und
das gleich an Seite der berühmten Namen. Die erste Rolle
im Film Zwei auf gleichem Weg hatte sie neben Audry
Hepburn, im Film Detektiv zusammen mit Frank Sinatra.
Zum Star wurde sie nach dem Film Bullit mit Steve
McQueen. Das tschechische Publikum erinnert sich an sie
aus dem Katastrophenfilm Airport. Die Popularität gewann
sie ohne Zweifel durch die Doppelrolle des Mädchens
Christine und der Spionin Ariane in der Bondparodie Der
Teufelskerl, wo sie an Seite von J. P. Belmondo auch die
komische und selbstironische Seite ihrer Schauspielerkunst
zeigte. Zu ihren berühmtesten Filmen gehört Die amerikanische Nacht des Regisseurs François Truffault. Und gerade
dieser legendäre Film, mit dem sie die Anerkennung der
europäischen Kritik sowie der Zuschauer erwarb, kam sie
im Jahre 2004 im Rahmen des 39. Internationalen
Filmfestivals ansagen. Gleichzeitig übernahm sie hier auch
den Preis der Stadt Karlsbad. „Es ist für mich eine große
Ehre,“ dankte sie damals. Wenn sie das Personal im
Grandhotel Pupp fragen, wie sie sich an den berühmten
Filmstar erinnern, bekommen sie diese Antwort: „Sie hat
sich sehr bescheiden und unauffällig benommen.“

One of the most beautiful actresses of all times. That is how
the American magazine Newsweek characterized Jacqueline
Bisset. She added glamour to the International Film Festival
when she had accepted its invitation and had come to
Karlovy Vary. The famous and admired actress, a real star
in the best sense of the word, stayed in the best hotel facility Karlovy Vary can offer – in the Grandhotel Pupp.
Jacqueline Bisset (1944) was born in English Weybridge.
The French roots of her mother might have decided on her
studies at a French secondary school in London. She soon
started attending ballet lessons as well as lessons of acting
and was also a model. It was just her beauty that opened
her the way to film. She immediately started playing with
actors of famous names, with Audrey Hepburn in her first
film Two for the Road or with Frank Sinatra in the film The
Detective. She became a real star after she had shot the film
Bullit with Steve McQueen. The Czech audience remembers her from the catastrophic film Airport. And she without
doubt gained popularity thanks to her double part of
a young girl Christina and a spy Ariana in a parody of Bond
films Le Magnifique. There, alongside J.P. Belmondo, she
showed both her comic talent and self-irony. The film Day

her most famous films. And it was just this legendary film
hailed by both European critics and audiences that she

MLÝNSKÁ
kolonáda
Mlýnská kolonáda je tradiční symbol města. Byla vystavěna v neorenesančním slohu v letech 1871–1881 podle
návrhu architekta Josefa Zítka. Přibližně v těchto místech
stávala od roku 1748 dřevěná kolonáda Nového pramene.
Říkala se jí Dupárna (Trampelbude), neboť kroky promenujících hostů duněly na dřevěné podlaze. Kolem r. 1800
byl vystavěn ve stylu pozdního empíru pavilon Tereziina
pramene a poblíž, na místě bývalého mlýna, vybudovány
Mlýnské lázně - do té doby ordinovali lázeňští lékaři přímo
u pramenů. V r. 1811 zde byl postaven kolonádní objekt
rovněž v empírovém slohu (arch. A. Giesel). Ve druhé
polovině 19. století zadala městská rada architektovi pražského Národního divadla Josefu Zítkovi stavbu zcela nové
kolonády. Slavný architekt ji původně zamýšlel vybudovat
jako dvoupodlažní. V roce 1893 byla alespoň prodloužena
až za Skalní pramen. Kolonáda však nebyla přijata s nadšením, prý neladila s charakterem lázeňského centra, dokonce ji hanlivě přirovnávali k záhonu chřestu, mrkve či
ke kuželkářské dráze. Teprve když se o stavbě mluvilo
a psalo s nadšením ve Vídni a německých městech, byla
přijata i Karlovarskými.
Mlýnské kolonáda měří 132 m a její střechu nese 124 korintských sloupů. Balustráda je zdobena 12 sochami – ale-

goriemi měsíců. Orchestřiště zdobí reliéfy od sochaře
Václava Lokvence. První reliéf zobrazuje objevení léčivých
pramenů, druhý představuje středověké lázeňství - stavení
kolem Vřídla a nosičky vody. Na třetím najdete tváře lázeňských lékařů Davida Bechera a Jeana de Carro. Čtvrtý vyjadřuje proslulost pramenů a zobrazuje tváře skladatelů, jejichž hudba je s lázněmi spjata: Chopina, Beethovena,
Labického, Dvořáka, Smetany a Fibicha. Pátý reliéf je alegorií současnosti, kdy jsou v lázních aplikovány tradiční
i nejnovější léčebné metody. Na Mlýnské kolonádě můžete
ochutnat jeden z pěti pramenů: Mlýnský, Skalní, Libušin,
Knížete Václava a Rusalčin pramen. Nad pramenní vázou
Mlýnského pramene je deska s latinským textem Ódy na
Vřídlo z počátku 16. století od českého humanisty Bohuslava
Hasištejnského.
Bude Vás jistě zajímat, že Mlýnská kolonáda účinkovala
v řadě filmů. Naposledy zde byl natáčen film Casino Royale.
Kolonáda se proměnila v nádraží Montenegro Station, odkud odjížděl James Bond (Daniel Craig) se svou milenkou.
Lázeňskou atmosféru můžete vychutnávat před kolonádou,
na lavičkách lemujících celé prostranství s palmami. Tato
plocha vznikla až v roce 1946, kdy byla překlenuta říčka
Teplá. Přejeme vám klidné posezení i procházení.

DIE MÜHLBRUNNKOLONNADE
Die Mühlbrunnkolonnade ist ein traditionelles Wahrzeichen
der Stadt. Sie wurde im Neorenaissance Stil in den Jahren
1871–1881 nach dem Entwurf des Architekten Josef Zítek
erbaut. Ungefähr an dieser Stelle stand seit dem Jahre 1748
die hölzerne Kolonnade der Neuen Quelle. Man nannte sie
Trampelbude, denn die Schritte der spazierenden Gäste
dröhnten am Holzboden. Um das Jahr 1800 wurde im
späten Empirestil der Pavillon der Theresienquelle und in
der Nähe, anstelle der ehemaligen Mühle, das Mühlenbad
erbaut – bis zu dieser Zeit behandelten die Kurärzte die
Kurgäste direkt an den Quellen. Im Jahre 1811 wurde hier
ein Kolonnadengebäude ebenfalls im Empirestil (Architekt
A. Giesel) erbaut. In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts
vergab der Stadtrat dem Architekten des Prager
Nationaltheaters Josef Zítek den Bau von einer völlig neuen
Kolonnade. Der berühmte Architekt hatte zuerst vor, sie als
zweistöckig zu erbauen. Im Jahre 1893 wurde sie wenig
stens bis hinter die Felsenquelle verlängert. Die Kolonnade
wurde aber nicht mit Begeisterung angenommen, sie sollte
nicht im Einklang mit dem Charakter des Kurzentrums sein,
sogar verglich man sie schimpflich mit einem Spargel-, oder
Möhrenbeet oder mit einer Kegelbahn. Erst als man über
den Bau mit Begeisterung in Wien und in den deutschen
Städten sprach und schrieb, wurde sie auch von den
Karlsbadern angenommen.
Die Mühlbrunnkolonnade misst 132 m und ihr Dach tragen
124 Korinthersäulen. Die Balustrade ist mit 12 Statuen geschmückt – den Allegorien der Monate. Den Orchestergraben
schmücken Reliefs von dem Bildhauer Václav Lokvenc. Das
erste Relief zeigt die Entdeckung der Heilquellen, das zweite
zeigt das mittelalterliche Kurwesen – die Gebäude um den
Sprudel und die Wasserträgerinnen. Am dritten findet man
die Gesichter der Kurärzte David Becher und Jean de Carro.
Das vierte stellt die Berühmtheit der Quellen dar und zeigt
die Gesichter der Komponisten, deren Musik mit der Kurstadt
verbunden ist: von Chopin, Beethoven, Labicky, Dvořák,
Smetana und Fibich. Das fünfte Relief ist eine Allegorie der
Gegenwart, als in der Kur die traditionellen sowie die neuesten Heilmethoden angewendet wurden. Auf der
Mühlbrunnkolonnade kann man eine der fünf Quellen
auskosten: die Mühlbrunnquelle (Mlýnský), die Felsenquelle
(Skalní), die Libussa-Quelle (Libuše), die Fürst Wenzel
Quelle (Václav) und die Nymphenquelle (Rusalka). Über der
Quellenvase der Mühlbrunnquelle ist eine Tafel mit der lateinischen Inschrift der Ode an den Sprudel aus dem Anfang
des 16. Jahrhunderts von dem böhmischen Humanisten
Bohuslav Hasištejnský. Es wird Sie sicher interessieren, dass

die Mühlbrunnkolonnade in zahlreichen Filmen spielte.
Zuletzt wurde hier der Film Casino Royale gedreht. Die
Kolonnade verwandelte sich in den Bahnhof Montenegro
Station, woher James Bond (Daniel Craig) mit seiner
Geliebten abfuhr. Die Kuratmosphäre kann man vor der
Kolonnade auskosten, auf Bänken die den gesamten Platz mit
Palmen umgeben. Diese Fläche entstand bis nach dem Jahre
1946, als der Fluss Tepl abgedeckt wurde. Wir wünschen

THE MILL COLONNADE
The Mill Colonnade is a traditional symbol of the town. It
was built in the Neo-Renaissance style from the plans by the
architect Josef Zítek in 1871 – 1881. It was somewhere here
that the wooden colonnade of the New Spring had been
standing since 1748. It had been called the Dive
(Trampelbude) as steps of strolling visitors had resounded on
its wooden floor. In about 1800 the late Imperial pavilion of
the Theresa Spring had been built and the Mill Spa building
had been built in place of an old mill in the neighbourhood
– spa doctors had had their surgeries directly at the springs
up to that time. The first colonnade – also in the late Imperial
style – had been built here in 1811 (architect A. Giesel).
Then, in the late 19th century, the town council had assigned
the construction of a completely new colonnade to the architect of the National Theatre in Prague Josef Zítek. The famous architect originally intended to build a two-storey colonnade. In 1893 it was at least made longer so that it ran
behind the Rock Spring. But the colonnade was not accepted with enthusiasm as people said that it did not harmonize
with the character of the spa centre. Sometimes it was even
abusively compared to a bed of asparagus or carrots or to
a bowling alley. It was only after they had started writing and
speaking about it enthusiastically in Vienna and Germany
that it was accepted in Karlovy Vary.
The Mill Colonnade is 132 metres long and its roof is supported by 124 Corinthian columns. 12 statues – allegories
of months – decorate the balustrade. The place for the orchestra is decorated with reliefs by the sculptor Václav
Lokvenc. The first relief depicts the discovery of mineral
springs, the other one shows medieval balneology – the
buildings and houses in the neighbourhood of the Sprudel
and water bearers. You can see the faces of spa doctors
David Becher and Jean de Carro on the third one. The
fourth represents the fame of the spa and depicts the faces
of composers whose music is connected with the spa town:
Chopin, Beethoven, Labický, Dvořák, Smetana and Fibich.

The fifth relief is an allegory of the present when the latest
therapeutic methods are applied in the spa. You can taste
water from five mineral springs – the Mill Spring, the Rock
Spring, the Libuše Spring, the Prince Wenceslas Spring and
the Rusalka Spring. There is a tablet with the Latin text of
the Ode to the Sprudel by the Czech humanist Bohuslav
Hasištejnský which dates from the early 16th century.
You will surely be interested in the fact that the Mill
Colonnade has played in a number of films, the last of them
being the film Casino Royale. The colonnade was changed
into the railway station Montenegro Station from which
James Bond with his girlfriend were leaving.
You can enjoy the spa atmosphere in front of the colon
nade, on benches lining the whole open space with palm
trees. This space was created only after the year 1946 when
the Teplá River had been spanned. Have a nice rest there
– no matter if you sit or walk.

Cesta nebude dlouhá, ale bohatá na zajímavosti. A navíc
nám v parném létě poskytne po většinu své trasy příjemný
stín. Od Grandhotelu Pupp se vydáme proti proudu řeky
Teplé Goethovou stezkou. Je vroubená kaštany na jedné
straně a skalnatým okrajem lesa na straně druhé. Na skalách uvidíme četné pamětní desky, na nichž návštěvníci
lázní vyjadřovali Karlovým Varům svou vděčnost za vyléčení. Setkáme se zde také s pomníkem Johanna Wolfganga
Goetha (Adolf Donndorf, 1883). Německý básník toto
město velmi miloval, navštívil je třináctkrát a napsal zde
řadu svých děl. Promenáda podél řeky nás zavede až ke
Galerii umění. Na protějším břehu spatříme na skále klasicistní Dorotein altánek, který věnoval v r. 1791 Dorotce
Kuronské její ctitel hrabě Clam-Gallas. Proto se také údolí,
kterým procházíme, nazývá Doroteiny nivy. Za Galerií
umění mineme secesní pomník Friedricha Schillera
(Friedrich Ohmann, Max Hiller, 1909) a přejdeme přes silnici ke vstupu do areálu Parkhotelu Richmond. U křižovatky si všimneme pomníku polského básníka Adama
Mickiewicze (Břetislav Werner, 1947). Stojíme teď tváří
v tváře půvabným italským sochám - chlapečkům putti.
V parku po naší pravé ruce vyvěrá v bílém lázeňském altánku jediný studený karlovarský pramen Štěpánka (10 °C.)
a poblíž hotelového objektu se rozkládá kuriozní Japonská
zahrada. Jedná se o kamennou zen-buddhistickou zahradu
(Kanji Nomura, 1998). Za řekou uvidíme elegantní terasy
Parkhotelu Richmond. Projdeme jimi směrem doprava a ve
stráni nad hotelem najdeme velkou sochu hledaného jelena
(August Kiss, pol. 19. stol.). Cestou zpět si odpočineme

v kavárně na terasách a vrátíme se po opačném břehu řeky
ke Grandhotelu Pupp. Cestou podnikneme ještě jedno pátrání: na skalách pod Doroteiným altánkem se pokusíme
nepřehlédnout zajímavost - malou plastiku lví hlavy (August
Kiss, 1859). Berlínský sochař August Kiss je také autorem
původní sochy karlovarského kamzíka na Jelením skoku.

Der Weg wird nicht lang sein, dagegen reich an Sehens
würdigkeiten. Und hinzu bietet er uns im heißen Sommer
größtenteils der Strecke angenehmen Schatten. Vom
Grandhotel Pupp begeben wir uns den Goethe Steig stromaufwärts der Tepl. Er ist auf der einen Seite von Kastanien
bäumen und auf der anderen Seite vom felsigen Waldrand
abbegrenzt. Auf den Felsen sieht man viele Denktafeln, an
denen die Kurbesucher Karlsbad ihre Dankbarkeit für die
Genesung äußerten. Man trifft hier auch auf das Denkmal
von Johann Wolfgang Goethe (Adolf Donndorf, 1883).
Dieser deutsche Dichter liebte sehr diese Stadt, besuchte sie
dreizehn Mal und schrieb hier eine Reihe von seinen
Werken. Die Promenade entlang des Flusses führt uns bis
zur Kunstgalerie. Am gegenüberliegenden Ufer sieht man am
Felsen den klassizistischen Dorothea Altan, den im Jahre
1791 Dorothea von Kurland ihr Verehrer Graf Clam-Gallas
widmete. Deswegen nennt man das Tal, durch das sie schreiten, die Dorotheen Auen. Hinter der Kunstgalerie geht man

am Jugendstildenkmal von Friedrich Schiller vorbei (Friedrich
Ohmann, Max Hiller, 1909) und man spaziert über die
Straße zum Eingang ins Areal von Parkhotel Richmond. An
der Kreuzung sieht man das Denkmal des polnischen
Dichters Adam Mickiewicz (Břetislav Werner, 1947). Man
steht jetzt direkt gegenüber den wunderschönen italienischen
Statuen – der Jungen Putti. Im Park rechts gesehen entspringt
im weißen Kuraltan die einzige kalte Karlsbader Quelle
Štěpánka (10 °C) und in der Nähe vom Hotel befindet sich
der kuriose japanische Garten. Es handelt sich um einen
steinernen zenbuddhistischen Garten (Kanji Nomura, 1998).
Hinter dem Fluss sieht man die eleganten Terrassen vom
Parkhotel Richmond. Man geht sie Richtung rechts durch
und im Hang über dem Hotel findet man die gesuchte große
Statue des Hirschen (August Kiss, Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts).
Am Rückweg ruht man sich im Café auf den Terrassen aus
und man kehrt am anderen Flussufer zum Grandhotel Pupp
zurück. Am Weg unternimmt man noch eine Fahndung: an
den Felsen unter dem Dorothea-Altan versucht man eine
Sehenswürdigkeit nicht zu übersehen – eine kleine Skulptur
eines Löwenkopfes (August Kiss, 1859). Der Berliner
Bildhauer August Kiss ist auch Autor der ursprünglichen
Statue der Karlsbader Gänse am Hirschsprung.

here. The promenade along the river will take you as far as
the Art Gallery. You can see the Classicist Dorothea
Summerhouse standing on a piece of rock on the opposite

Kuronska, who she admired, in 1791. That is why the valley through which you are walking now is called Dorothea´s
Meadow. You will pass the Art Nouveau monument to
Friedrich Schiller (Friedrich Ohmann, Max Hiller, 1909),
cross the road and arrive at the entrance to the park of the
Parkhotel Richmond. You will notice the monument to the
Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz (Břetislav Werner, 1947).
Now you are standing face to face to lovely Italian statues
– putti boys. The only cold mineral spring of Karlovy Vary
– Stephanie – comes out of the ground in a white spa summerhouse in the park on your right (10 °C) and a Japanese
garden stretches near the hotel building. It is a stone ZenBuddhist garden (Kanji Nomura, 1998). You can see the
elegant terraces of the Parkhotel Richmond across the river.
You will walk through them to the right and will find a big
statue of the famous deer on a hillside above the hotel
(August Kiss, the mid-19th century). You will have a rest in the
café on the terraces on your way back and will return to the
Grandhotel Pupp along the opposite bank of the river. You
will carry out one more investigation on the way – you will
try not to miss a small sculpture representing a lion’s head on
the rocks beneath the Dorothea Summerhouse (August Kiss,
1859). The Berlin sculptor August Kiss also made the original
statue of the Karlovy Vary chamois at the Deer’s Leap.

in size. However, we have chosen to offer
a smaller size since December – for your
comfort as the smaller size will fit your
handbag or pocket better. We would like
to know your opinion about which size
