s novým, již desátým ročníkem Pupp Journalu nepřichází jen
zbrusu nový kabát časopisu, ale také obsah, věříme, že pro Vás
čtenáře opět atraktivnější. Kromě ohlédnutí za událostmi uplynulých
týdnů a rozšířených sezónních nabídek Grandrestaurantu si budete
moci nově přečíst seriál o specialitách české kuchyně a zavítáme také
do různých regionů. Celý rok Vám budeme přinášet kapitoly z připravované knihy Historie Grandhotelu Pupp. Prostor budeme věnovat i proměnám prostor a různých zákoutí hotelu v průběhu let

Geehrte und liebe Gäste von Grandhotel Pupp,
mit dem neuen, bereits dem zehnten Jahrgang von Pupp Journal, kommt nicht nur ein
neues Gewand der Zeitschrift, sondern auch der Inhalt. Wir hoffen, dass er für Sie Leser
noch attraktiver wird. Außer dem Rückblick der Ereignisse der vergangenen Wochen
und einer größeren Auswahl der Saisonangebote im Grandrestaurant, können Sie neuerdings eine Serie über Spezialitäten der böhmischen Küche lesen, man kehrt auch in
die verschiedenen Regionen ein. Das ganze Jahr wird man Ihnen Kapitel aus dem neu
vorbereiteten Buch Geschichte von Grandhotel Pupp bringen. Den Raum widmet man
auch den Veränderungen der Räumlichkeiten und der verschiedenen Plätze im Hotel im
Laufe der Jahre und der Jahrhunderte, in dieser Ausgabe finden Sie den Raum der
Lobby so, wie er vor 100 Jahren aussah und wie heute. Natürlich bringt man Ihnen
weiterhin Informationen zu den Karlsbader Quellen, Tipps zu Ausflügen oder die erwarteten Kulturereignisse. So wie man diese Zeitschrift verbessert, so wird auch die Pflege
um Sie immer sorgfältiger. Wir hoffen, dass in Verbindung mit dem schönen Karlsbader

Dear Guests of the Grandhotel Pupp,
The new, tenth year of the Pupp Journal is bringing not only a new, altered coat of the
magazine but also new contents. We hope that it will be more attractive for you, readers. Apart from a review of important events of recent weeks and extended seasonal
offers of the Grandrestaurant, you will be able to read a series about specialties of
Czech cuisine – we will visit different regions. We will also bring chapters from the
forthcoming book The History of the Grandhotel Pupp during the whole year. We will
direct your attention to the transformations of different rooms and parts of the hotel in
the course of the years and centuries. This issue shows the lobby as it was 100 years
ago compared to now. Of course you will find sections providing information about
Karlovy Vary mineral springs, tips for trips or cultural events. We are trying to improve
our care of you as we are trying to improve this magazine. We believe that if your stay
is connected with the beautiful spring in Karlovy Vary, it will become a dream stay.

Nezapomenutelné zážitky si odvezly naši hosté ze svých vánočních a novoročních pobytů.

Rutsch ins neue Jahr im Grandhotel Pupp beschreiben. Zum Höhepunkt dieser Tage gehörte sowohl eine Reihe von Konzerten oder ein
Magieabend, als auch das Grand Finale in
Form eines Silvestergalaabends, mit einem
wunderschönen Feuerwerk abgeschlossen.

navštívili Grandhotel Pupp. Výnosy z prodeje u vánočního stromku a z prodeje lístků do tomboly zpříjemní
život opuštěným zvířatům městského útulku pro psy
v Karlových Varech a ostrovského azylu pro týraná
a handikepovaná zvířata Macík. Za bezmála 15.000
korun jsme jejich obyvatelům nakoupili kvalitní psí
a kočičí granule a antiparazitní pasty pro koně.

parasitenpasten für Pferde eingekauft.
We Do Not Forget Abandoned Animals
Big thanks to all those who visited the Grandhotel Pupp
at Christmas time. The money from the sale of the
Christmas tree as well as from the sale of raffle tickets will
make the life of abandoned animals in the municipal
dogs´ home in Karlovy Vary and the home Macík for illtreated and handicapped animals in Ostrov more pleasant.
We bought quality dog’s and cat’s granulated food and
antiparasitic paste for horses for almost 15,000 crowns.

14th Ball Festival
The prize MOSTY (Bridges) is awarded to
people, projects or activities that considerably
improve the position of handicapped people in
the Czech Republic. The Mosty 2008 Prize
was awarded in the Festive Hall of the
Grandhotel Pupp under the auspices and in
the presence of the First Lady of the Czech
Republic, Mrs. Livie Klausová.
The rooms of the Grandhotel Pup were dominated
by the Ball Festival, one of the highlights of the
ball season - and not only of that in Karlovy Vary
– at the end of January. It was traditionally held in
the style of one of Czech films. A movie dating
from 1977 by the director Oldřich Lipský Adele
Hasn’t Had Her Dinner Yet was chosen this year.
The heroine of this detective comedy is a carnivorous plant and that was why there was fear that
some visitors could disappear in a mysterious way.
Yet everything turned out well and according to
available information Adele did not eat anyone.
The New Keglevich Cross
The rock behind the Grandhotel Pupp has
been dominated by the wooden Keglevich
cross since 1795. It was renovated in 1990 to
be damaged by vandals again last year. The
second replica was completed, put up and
consecrated at the turn of the year. And so
people looking from the Grandhotel Pupp
downstream the Teplá River can enjoy the same
view of the rock in the river bend as they
could enjoy in the past 215 years.
Plesová sezóna
Na 22 plesů a bálů tvoří letošní plesovou sezónu v Grandhotelu Pupp. Bál Festival, Ples
orchidejí, Best Bál, Ples města Karlovy Vary to jsou jen některé z důležitých společenských
událostí tohoto období. Obsáhlý je seznam
maturitních plesů, které jsou velmi oblíbené
díky své neformální, uvolněné atmosféře. Pro
mnoho studentů je právě maturitní ples vstupenkou do světa dospělých.
Ballsaison
Jeden z vrcholů, nejen karlovarské plesové sezóny, Bál festival, ovládl na konci ledna společenské prostory Grandhotelu Pupp. Tradičně
se nesl v duchu jednoho ze slavných českých
filmů. Volba pro letošní rok padla na snímek
režiséra Oldřicha Lipského z roku 1977 Adéla
ještě nevečeřela. Hlavní hrdinkou této detektivní komedie je masožravá rostlina, panovaly
proto obavy ze záhadného mizení návštěvníků
plesu. Vše ale dobře dopadlo, podle dostupných informací Adéla nikoho nesnědla.

Mosty 2008
Cena MOSTY oceňuje osobnost, projekt nebo
čin, jenž významným způsobem zlepšuje postavení osob se zdravotním postižením v České
republice. Slavnostní předávání ceny za rok
2008 se uskutečnilo pod záštitou a za účasti
první dámy České republiky, paní Livie Klausové,
ve Slavnostním sále Grandhotelu Pupp.

Skále za Grandhotelem Pupp již od roku 1795
vévodil dřevěný Keglevičův kříž. Byl obnoven
v roce 1990 a v minulém roce poničen vandaly.
Druhá replika byla dokončena, vztyčena a vysvěcena na přelomu roku. Při pohledu od Grandhotelu
Pupp po proudu řeky Teplé se opět nabízí stejný
pohled na skalní dominantu, jako během uplynulých 215 let.
Neues Keglewitsch Kreuz
Dem Felsen hinter dem Grandhotel Pupp dominierte bereits seit dem Jahre 1795 ein hölzernes Keglewitsch Kreuz. Es wurde im Jahre
1990 erneuert und im letzten Jahr von
Wandalen zerstört. Die zweite Kopie wurde
am Jahresumbruch gefertigt, aufgerichtet und
ausgeweiht. Wenn man vom Grandhotel Pupp
Flussabwärts sieht, bietet sich im Teplbogen
wieder derselbe Blick auf die Felsendominante,
wie während der vergangenen 215 Jahre.
22 Bälle bilden die diesjährige Ballsaison im
Grandhotel Pupp. Der Ball Festival, der Ball
der Orchideen, Best Ball, Ball der Stadt
Karlsbad – das sind nur manche von den wichtigen gesellschaftlichen Ereignissen dieser Zeit.
Umfangreich ist die Liste der Abiturientenbälle,
die dank ihrer unformellen, lockeren Atmosphäre
sehr beliebt sind. Für viele Studenten ist gerade der Abiturientenball die Eintrittskarte in die
Welt der Erwachsenen.

This year’s ball season in the Grandhotel
Pupp consists of about 22 balls. The Ball
Festival, the Orchid Ball, the Best Ball, the
Ball of the Town of Karlovy Vary – these are
only some of important social events of this
season. The list of school leaving balls is extensive too. These balls are very popular
owing to their informal and relaxed atmosphere. It is often just the school leaving ball that
represents the ticket to the world of adults for
lots of students.

Na konci minulého století vznikaly otisky rukou slavných osobností, které hotel navštívily.
Mimo jiné například Michaela Douglase, Seana
Conneryho či Evy Herzigové. Bohužel, byla
použita nevhodná hmota, takže otisky po vypálení buď pukly, nebo se zmenšily do velikosti
dětské ruky. Z projektu proto nakonec sešlo.

Futterstellen zusammen mit anderem Futter die
Angestellten der Kurwälder geben. Die Förster
sind also froh, dass trotz einem strengen Winter
die Waldtiere in einer guten Verfassung sind.

war? Im Jahre 1808 malte der Dichter und der
Weimarer Alleskönner Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
ein Bild des Böhmischen und des Sachsischen
Saales vom Keglewitsch Kreuz. Diese sehr gelungene lavierte Zeichnung ist heute in den Sammlungen
des Goethe-Denkmals in Weimar aufbewahrt.

... the Grandhotel Pupp should have had its
own Hall of Fame? It was at the end of the
previous century that the handprints of famous
personalities who had stayed in the Grandhotel
Pupp came into being. E.g. of Michael Douglas,
Sean Connery or Eva Herzigová. Unfortunately,
the paste which was used was not suitable and,
after being burnt, the handprints either cracked
or they shrank and got the size of a child’s
hand. Finally, the project was dropped.
... the Grandhotel Pupp was a model for
paintings or poems by many a classic? In 1808
the poet and Renaissance personality from
Weimar Johann Wolfgang von Goethe painted
a picture of the Bohemian and Saxon Halls

Šumava is a region of hillsides, water and forests, cultural
monuments and, too, traditions which are still kept here. Like
other parts of Bohemia, the region of Šumava has its traditional cuisine which will stir the taste buds of even the choosiest
gourmets. It makes you want to taste it through its diversity as
well as the variety of used ingredients. It has recently become
popular in both common and exclusive restaurants. Dishes
from wild fruit and mushrooms, vegetables, meat, game and
poultry are typical of Šumava. Local cuisine often uses herbs
which grow on mountain meadows. Substantial soups, such as
potato soup, “kulajda” (cream soup with dill and eggs) or
“veverka” (oxtail soup with tomato purée and mushrooms) are
popular. Typical trimmings are potatoes – cooked, raw potato
pancakes and potato pancakes, mashed potatoes and potato
dumplings as well as raw potato dumplings and dumplings
with bacon. Meat dishes are represented by those prepared at
the famous Šumava home-slaughtering, by game – venison,
hare in cream sauce or in black sauce, by lamb and poultry –
ducks, geese and hens. A separate chapter of this region’s
gastronomy are sweet dishes, especially fruit dumplings, scones, doughnuts or numerous cakes filled with different kinds
of fruit- these are usually baked at the time of country fairs.
Many recipes are inherited from one generation to another
and are based on local folk traditions. Chef of Grandhotel
Pupp will allow you to take a look under the lid hiding the
delicacies of Šumava in the Grandhotel Pupp in the spring. He
has prepared a traditional menu for you, a menu which is so
characteristic of this South Bohemian region.

a také tradic, které se zde udržují. Stejně jako další oblasti
Čech, i šumavský region má svou tradiční kuchyni, která
spolehlivě dovede jitřit chuťové pohárky i těch nejnáročnějších požitkářů. Láká k ochutnání svou různorodostí a pestrostí
používaných surovin. Zejména v posledních letech se dostává do popředí zájmu běžných i exkluzivních restauracích. Pro
Šumavu jsou charakteristické pokrmy z lesních plodů, zejména hub a lesního ovoce, zeleniny a masa, zvěřiny i drůbeže.
V hojné míře používá byliny, kterých je na horských loukách
dostatek. Oblíbené jsou vydatné polévky, například bramboračka, kulajda či veverka. Typickými přílohami jsou brambory v různých úpravách - vařené, bramboráky či bramborové
placky, bramborová kaše a bramborové knedlíky, dále
knedlíky chlupaté nebo špekové. Masitá jídla reprezentují
vyhlášené šumavské zabíjačky, zvěřina - srnčí, zajíc na smetaně nebo na černo, jehněčí a drůbeží maso - kachny, husy,
slepice. Samostatnou kapitolou gastronomie tohoto regionu
jsou sladké pokrmy, zejména ovocné knedlíky, lívance, koblížky či bezpočet druhů koláčků s různými ovocnými náplněmi, které se pečou zejména o poutích či posvíceních. Mnoho
receptů se dědí z generace na generaci a vychází z místních

Der Böhmerwald ist eine Region der Hänge, Gewässer und
Wälder, der Kulturdenkmäler und auch der Traditionen, die
man hier beibehält. Genauso wie die anderen Gebiete in
Böhmen, hat ebenfalls die Böhmerwaldregion ihre traditionelle Küche. Sie reizt sicher den Geschmackssinn der
anspruchsvollsten Genießer. Mit ihrer Vielfalt der verwendeten Zutaten verlockt sie uns zu kosten. Vor allem in den
letzten Jahren wird sie immer beliebter. In den herkömmli-
chen, sowie den exklusiven Restaurants. Für den Böhmerwald
sind typisch Speisen aus Waldfrüchten, vor allem aus Pilzen
und Waldbeeren, aus Gemüse und Fleisch, aus Wild sowie
Geflügel. Im reichen Maße verwendet sie Kräuter, von denen
es auf den Bergwiesen genug gibt. Beliebt sind die ausgiebigen Suppen, zum Beispiel die Kartoffelsuppe, die Kulajda
oder die Veverka. Typische Beilagen sind Kartoffeln auf verschiedene Art - gekocht, Puffkuchen oder Kartoffelpuffer,
Kartoffelbrei und Kartoffelknödel, weiter Speckknödel oder
Klöße. Die Fleischgerichte vertreten die berühmten
Böhmerwälder Schweineschlachten, das Wild - Reh, Hase
mit Rahmsoße oder Schwarz, Lamm- und Geflügelfleisch Enten, Gänse, Hennen. Ein Kapitel für sich sind in dieser
Region die süßen Speisen, vor allem die Obstknödel,
Liwanzen, Krapfen oder Kolatschen mit verschiedenen
Obstfüllungen, die man vor allem zu Wallfahrten oder
Kirmes bäckt. Viele Rezepte erbt man von Generation zu
Generation und sie ergehen aus dem örtlichen

Champagne z produkce Billecart Salmon.
Vyznačuje se velmi jemným a dlouho trvajícím
perlením. Má vyzrálou svěží vůni zralé hrušky
a dlouhotrvající chuť. Kořen a kvítky devětsilu
jsou pro potřeby tohoto menu dodávány z místní kozí farmy paní Králové. Má na své louce
potok a na jaře je zde proto dostatečná vlhkost
garantující mladé kořeny a květy této byliny.

den gereiften Duft der reifen Birnen und lang
andauernden Geschmack. Die Wurzel und die
Blüte der Neunkraftwurzel werden für Bedarf
dieses Menüs von der hiesigen Ziegenfarm von
Frau Králová geliefert. Sie hat auf ihrer Wiese
einen Bach und im Frühling ist hier deshalb
ausreichende Feuchtigkeit, die junge Wurzeln
und Blüten dieser Heilpflanze garantiert.

We mentioned Champagne wine from the
production of the Billecard Salmon in the
March offer. Its outstanding feature is fine and
long-lasting fizzness. It has a fresh smell of
a ripe pear and a long-lasting taste. The root
and blooms of the butterbur which are necessary for this menu are delivered from the local
goat farm of Mrs. Králová. There is a brook on
her meadow which makes it damp enough to
guarantee young roots and blooms of this herb.

Prostor sloužící k odpočinku, čekání nebo
posezení u novin najdete v Grandhotelu
Pupp vlevo za vchodem do hotelu. Stejně
dnes, jako na počátku minulého století.
Místo je totožné, jeho dispozice a zařízení se
však v kontextu doby stále mění. Měnil se
i počet a rozmístění dveří, vchodů a východů, měnila se štukatérská výzdoba a malba
i osazení zdí. Společným znakem procházejícím všemi epochami je rozdělení prostoru na
pomyslné třetiny, tak jak jsou vidět tři stropní
pole se třemi lustry. Ty současné jsou z nádherného českého křišťálu, byly vyrobeny ve
sklářských dílnách v Kamenickém Šenově
a zavěšeny v 70. letech minulého století.

Den Raum, wo man sich erholen, wo man warten
oder eine Zeitung lesen kann, befindet sich im
Grandhotel Pupp links hinter dem Eingang ins
Hotel. Heute, genauso wie zu Beginn des vorigen
Jahrhunderts. Der Ort ist der gleiche, sein Charakter
und die Einrichtung verändern sich aber stets im
Laufe der Zeit. Es wechselte sich auch die Anzahl
und die Position der Türen, der Eingänge und der
Ausgänge, es veränderte sich die Stuckverzierung
und die Wandbemalung, sowie die Versetzung der
Wände. Ein gemeinsames Zeichen, dass alle Epochen
überdeckt, ist die Raumteilung in gedachte Drittel,
so wie man die drei Deckenfelder mit drei Lüstern
sieht. Die jetzigen sind aus wunderschönem böhmi
schem Kristallglas, sie wurden in den Glaswerken in
Kamenický Šenov hergestellt und in den 70er Jahren
des vorigen Jahrhunderts aufgehängt.
The room which is used for relaxation, waiting or sitting over a newspaper can be found
behind the hotel entrance in the Grandhotel
Pupp. It was there in the early 20th century
and it is still there today. The place is the
same, yet its lay-out and equipment keep on
changing in the context of the times. The
number and location of doors, entrances and
exits has also changed as well as stucco decoration and colour of walls and their decora
tion. A sign common for all epochs is the division of the space into imaginary thirds – you
can see three fields on the ceiling with three
chandeliers. The present ones of beautiful
Bohemian crystal glass were made in the
glassworks in Kamenický Šenov and suspended in the 1970s.

využít některý z patnácti minerálních pramenů. Teplota pramenů se pohybuje v rozmezí
30°C až 72°C, chemickým složením se téměř
neliší, jen množství volného CO2 je rozdílné.
Využití pramenů k léčbě je zcela individuální
záležitostí a mělo by být stanoveno až po vyšetření lékařem. Jen v hrubých obrysech lze
říci, že chladnější prameny jsou vhodnější pro
urychlení střevní peristaltiky a pijí se s delším
časovým odstupem před jídlem, zatímco teplejší prameny mají zklidňující efekt a doba jejich
užití před jídlem je kratší. Obvyklý pitný režim
je okolo 30 minut před jídlem, 3x denně

Zur Trinkkur kann man in Karlsbad eine von
fünfzehn Mineralquellen ausnutzen. Die
Temperatur der Quellen bewegt sich zwi
schen 30°C und 72°C. Ihre chemische
Zusammensetzung ist fast dieselbe, nur die
Menge des freien CO2 ist unterschiedlich. Die
Ausnutzung der Quellen in der Behandlung
ist individuell, aber sie sollte erst nach einer
ärztlichen Untersuchung gestellt werden.
Generell kann man sagen, dass kühle Quellen
für die Beschleunigung der Peristaltik gut
sind. Das Mineralwasser aus diesen Quellen
trinkt man in einem längeren Zeitabstand vor
dem Essen. Das wärmere Mineralwasser hat
einen beruhigenden Effekt und man trinkt es
kurz vor dem Essen. Gewöhnlich trinkt man
dreimal pro Tag 200-400 ml ungefähr 30
Minuten vor dem Essen. Das Mineralwasser
sollte der Patient beim Gehen trinken. Eine
richtige Trinkkur ist der Hauptteil der komplexen Badebehandlung. Ein anderer Teil der
Behandlung ist die Geländekur. Nach der
Untersuchung der physischen Kondition des
Patienten stellt der Arzt die Länge der täglichen Spaziergänge einschliesslich der empfohlenen Belastung des Organismus. Spezialisten
bereiteten eine Liste der Karlsbader Spazier
gänge aus, die auch gedruckt wurde. Sie ent
hält Informationen über die Länge, Über
höhung, die Zeit, in der man den Spaziergang
machen sollte, und über die energetische
Ausgabe. Zahlreiche Altane und Wege in
Kurwäldern beweisen den Fakt, dass prominente Besucher Karlsbads schon in der Ver
gangenheit diesen Teil der Behandlung hoch
schätzten. Noch heute tragen viele Wege in
Kurwäldern ihre Namen.

Drinking and Cross-Country Cure
There are fifteen mineral springs in Karlovy
Vary which can be used in the drinking cure
The temperature of the springs ranges from
30°C to 72°C and they do not almost differ
in their chemical composition, only the
amount of free CO2 is different. It is fully
individual how mineral water is be used in
treatment but only a doctor should decide
on it after the patient’s examination.
Generally, cool springs are suitable for
speeding up the peristalsis. The interval
between drinking mineral water from them
and eating is longer. Warm mineral water
has got a soothing effect and patients drink
it shortly before eating. Usually, patients
drink from 200 to 400 ml mineral water
three times a day, 30 minutes before eating.
They should drink it while walking. A correct drinking cure is the main part of comprehensive spa treatment. The cross-country
walk is another part of spa treatment. After
examining the patient’s physical condition
the doctor decides on its length and ar
duousness. Specialists have prepared a list
of Karlovy Vary walks which is available as
a booklet. It contains information about
each of 21 spa walks, its length and time in
which it should be finished as well as the
expenditure of energy. Numerous summerhouses and routes in spa woods prove the
fact that prominent visitors to Karlovy Vary
have always appreciated and regarded this
part of spa treatment. Roads in spa woods
often bear their names.

The Saxon Hall around 1710
V roce 1695 byla Louka (místo, kde dnes stojí
Grandhotel Pupp) svědkem velkých oslav, které tu
s náležitou okázalostí společně uspořádaly dvě významné osobnosti své doby. Kurfiřt Friedrich z Brandenburgu,
pozdější pruský král a kurfiřt Friedrich August Saský,
známější jako August II. Silný, pozdější král saský a polský. Oba velmožové přijeli do lázní, jak bylo tehdy
zvykem, s celými svými dvory. Na Louce nechali postavit z větví a rákosu chýše, v nichž se urozená společnost
bavila a tančila při dobrém jídle a pití za doprovodu
hudebních kapel. O rozvernou zábavu se postaraly
četné skryté důmyslné vodotrysky, na něž dámy a pánové našlapovali či usedali, a rozjařené účastníky bálu pak
postříkala voda. Je známo, že August Silný i v Karlových
Varech rád dokazoval, že je opravdu silný. Tak například zmačkal v ruce stříbrný servírovací tác natolik, že
jej několik mužů nemohlo narovnat. Jindy nosil po
Louce na jedné ruce mladého Turka. Oslav Augusta
Silného se v roce 1695 zúčastnil i proslulý říšský hrabě
František Antonín Špork, jenž sídlil na zámku v Kuksu,
při němž vybudoval malé lázně po vzoru Karlových
Varů. Špork sehrál s Augustem partii lomberu (karetní
hra) a vyhrál 1400 dukátů, z nichž nechal na svém
panství postavit kostel. August Silný pobýval
v Karlových Varech také v roce 1701, kdy zde doslova
na zelené louce nechal postavit Lusthaus zvaný Saský
sál. Augusta II. doprovázel do Karlových Varů anglický
vyslanec v Drážďanech jménem Stepeney. Ten na jaře
roku 1701 napsal o vzniku Saského sálu:
V Karlových Varech jsme postavili dům Salle de
l´Asemblée, jenž si vyžádal náklad 2 000 zlatých. Je
postaven podle italského návrhu, se 4 záchody, s tajemnými zákoutími a pohodlnými lůžkovými odpočívadly.
Z Drážďan jsme přivezli na šesti vozech lustry a zrcadla,
jež zkrášlí novou budovu, a 16. dubna se tu bude odbývat maškaráda, kde hraběnka Königsmarková bude
představovat Dianu, sledovanou šesti nymfami. O karnevalovém reji roku 1701 se pak dozvídáme z karlovarské kroniky:
Pravou francouzskou slavnost uspořádal saský kurfiřt.
Přijela i krásná hraběnka Aurora Königsmarková ze

starého šlechtického rodu, v té době milenka Augusta
Silného (matka pozdějšího maršála Mořice Saského).
Saský kurfiřt dal postavit na louce starosty Andrease
Bechera různé stánky a besídky, které sloužící vyzdobili
křišťálovými lustry a zrcadly. Pod sedadly a pod provrtanými tanečními prkny byly připraveny vodotrysky, jež
začaly stříkat, jakmile se usedlo na sedadlo nebo když
taneční pár vstoupil na některé prkno. Docházelo k řadě veselých scén, když nic netušící a tanci holdující
páry byly překvapeny zespodu tryskající vodou nebo
pokropeny při usednutí na křesla. August II. Silný leskem svých celkem šesti návštěv u Vřídla kolem roku
1700 „spustil lavinu“ urozených návštěv Karlových
Varů. Jeho pobyty byly pro Karlovy Vary velkou reklamou, v jejímž důsledku se lázně staly módou a dobrou
letní adresou mondénní společnosti. Ta přijížděla do
vřídelního města mnohdy jenom za zábavou a odpočinkem od „útrap“ zahálčivého života (dnes bychom onu
karlovarskou zábavu označili módním pojmem wellness),
nikoliv na léčení. O tom, že panstvu v Karlových
Varech znamenitě chutnalo, svědčí zápis o hostině
šlechty z roku 1708 při karlovarské návštěvě pruského
krále Friedricha I., v němž se uvádí, že hosté snědli 647
liber hovězího, 175 liber slaniny, 4 jeleny, 600 slepic, 27
kop vajec, 480 liber másla, jakož i veliké množství ryb,
ptáků a drůbeže. Inu, dámy a pánové byli zdatnými jedlíky a netrápili se žádnou lázeňskou dietou. Není divu, že
se pak z jejich řad etablovali skutečně nemocní lázeňští
hosté se žaludečními a hlavně dnovými neduhy z nadměrné konzumace zvěřiny a těžkých červených vín.

Eine Passage aus dem vorbereiteten Buch Geschichte von
Grandhotel Pupp des Historikers Stanislav Burachovič
Im Jahre 1695 war die Wiese (der Ort, wo heute das
Grandhotel Pupp steht) Zeuge von großen Feiern. Mit
zuständiger Pracht veranstalteten sie hier gemeinsam
zwei bedeutende Persönlichkeiten seiner Zeit, Kurfürst

Friedrich von Brandenburg, späterer König von Preußen
und Kurfürst Friedrich August von Sachsen, bekannter
als August II. Starke, späterer König von Sachsen und
Polen. Beide Magnaten kamen zur Kur, wie damals
üblich war, mit ihrem gesamten Hof. Auf der Wiese
ließen sie aus Ästen und Schilf Hütten bauen, in denen
sich bei gutem Essen und Trinken, in Begleitung von
Musikkapellen, die adelige Gesellschaft unterhielt und
tanzte. Für ausgelassene Unterhaltung sorgten zahlreiche versteckte Fontänen, auf die die Damen und
Herren auftraten oder sich saßen. Danach wurden die
animierten Ballteilnehmer von Wasser bespritzt. Es ist
bekannt, dass August der Starke auch in Karlsbad gern
bewies, dass er wirklich stark ist. Also z. B. presste er in
der Hand ein silbernes Serviertablett so zusammen, dass
es einige Männer nicht richten konnten. Andermal trug
er auf der Wiese auf einem Arm einen jungen Türken.
An den Feiern von August des Starken im Jahre 1695
nahm auch der berühmte Reichsgraf František Antonín
Špork teil. Dieser residierte am Schloss Kuks, wo er ein
kleines Heilbad nach Karlsbads Vorbild errichtete.
Špork spielte mit August eine Partie Lomber (ein
Kartenspiel) und gewann 1 400 Dukaten, von denen er
auf seiner Herrschaft eine Kirche bauen ließ. August der
Starke weilte in Karlsbad auch im Jahre 1701, als er hier
wörtlich auf grüner Wiese ein Lusthaus, genannt der
Sächsische Saal, erbauen ließ. August II. begleitete nach
Karlsbad der englische Gesandte in Dresden Namens
Stepeney. Im Frühling 1701 schrieb er über die
Entstehung des Sächsischen Saales:
Wir haben hier in Karlsbad ein Haus gebaut, das 2 000
fl. kostet. Es ist von italienischer Erfindung mit vier
Retiraden, Halbdunkelplätzen, Ruhebetten. Wir haben
von Dresden sechs Wagen mit Lüstern und Spiegeln zur
Ausschmückung des Gebäudes mitgebracht und den
16. April sollen wir eine Maskerade haben, worin die
Königin die Diana vorstellt und, von 6 Nymphen gefolgt, auftritt. Über den Karnevalreigen im Jahre 1701
erfährt man dann aus der Karlsbader Chronik:
Ein echt französisches Fest gab der Kurfürst von
Sachsen, mit dem auch die schöne Gräfin Aurora von

Königsmark gekommen war. Er ließ auf demselben
Platze Laubhütten erbauen und zur Ausschmückung
derselben Spiegel und Kristall-Leuchter von Dresden
bringen: unter den Sitzplätzen und auf dem Tanzplatze
aber waren Springwässer mit verborgenen Trittfedern
angelegt und als sich die Geladenen ahnungslos zur
Tafel setzten oder dem Tanze huldigten, spielten plötzlich die zahlreichen Springwässer und verwandelten die

Sommeradresse der mondänen Gesellschaft. Diese kam
in die Sprudelstadt oft nicht zur Kur, sondern nur wegen der Unterhaltung und der Erholung von „Leiden“
des müßigen Lebens (heute würde man jene Karlsbader
Unterhaltung mit dem modischen Begriff Wellness
nennen). Darüber, dass es der Herrschaft in Karlsbad
ausgezeichnet schmeckte, zeugt eine Nachricht über das
Karlsbader Festmahl des Adels aus dem Jahre 1708,
während des Kurbesuches von preußischem König
Friedrich I. Man schreibt hier, dass die Gäste 647 Pfund
Rind, 175 Pfund Speck, 4 Hirsche, 600 Hühner, 27
Schock Eier, 480 Pfund Butter, als auch große Menge
an Fischen, Vögeln und Geflügel aßen. Ja, die Damen
und Herren waren tüchtige Esser und sie quälten sich
nicht mit einer Kurdiät. Man muss sich nicht wundern,
dass sich dann aus ihren Reihen wirklich kranke
Kurgäste mit Magen- und vor allem Gichtbeschwerden,
verursacht von übermäßigem Verzehr von Wild und
schweren Rotweinen, etablierten.

Chapters from the History of the Most
Renowned Hotel in Karlovy Vary
An extract from the forthcoming book The Story of the
Grandhotel Pupp by the historian Stanislav Burachovič
The Meadow (the place where the Grandhotel Pupp
stands today) was the site of a grand celebration in
1695 held with due pomp by two contemporary persons of importance: Friedrich, Elector of Brandenburg,
who later became King of Prussia, and Friedrich August,
Elector of Saxony, better known as August II the Strong,
who later became the King of Saxony and Poland.
As was the custom in their time, both the aristocrats came to the spa with their complete courts. They ordered
the building of cabins made of branches and reed on the
Meadow where the nobility amused itself, danced and
indulged in delicious food and beverages to the accompaniment of musicians. The sprightly atmosphere was
enhanced by numerous ingenious and well-hidden waterworks, which sprinkled the exhilarated guests with water
when the ladies and gentlemen stepped or sat on them.
August the Strong took great pleasure in demonstrating
his strength to his guests while in Carlsbad. For example, at one time, he bent a silver tray so much that several men had trouble straightening it out. At another time, he carried a young Turkish man across the Meadow
with one hand. The renowned imperial aristocrat, Count
František Antonín Špork, who resided at Kuks Castle
where he built a small spa after the fashion of Carlsbad,
was among the guests participating in the festivities held
by August the Strong in 1695. During a game of cards
(Lomber) with August, Count Špork walked away with
1,400 ducats in winnings. Reportedly, he used the money to fund the construction of a church on his estate.
August the Strong was again in Carlsbad in 1701 when
he ordered the building of the Lusthaus (Summer
Pavilion) – known as Saxony Hall – on the green field
of the Meadow. August II arrived in Carlsbad in the
company of the British Envoy to Dresden, George
Stepney. Envoy Stepeney wrote the following about the
building of Saxony Hall in spring 1701:
We built the Salle de l´Asemblée in Carlsbad and the
total expenses incurred amounted to 2,000 guldens. It
is built according to Italian design, with four powder

places furnished with sofas. Six carriages brought chandeliers and mirrors from Dresden to decorate the new
building where a bal masqué is to take place on the
16th of April, at which Countess Königsmark shall impersonate Diana pursued by six nymphs. From the
Carlsbad chronicle, we learn the following about the
masquerade ball in 1701:
A truly French banquet was given by the Elector of
Saxony. Beautiful Countess Aurora Königsmark from an
old aristocratic family, the mistress of August the Strong
then (and the mother of the later Marshall Moritz of
Saxony), was also among the numerous guests. The
Elector of Saxony ordered the building of various
stands and pergolas on the meadow of Mayor Andreas
Becher, which the servants decorated with crystal
chandeliers and mirrors. Waterworks, hidden under
chairs and drilled planks of the dance floor, began
sprinkling water as soon as someone had sat on a chair
or when the dancing pairs had accidentally stepped on
one of the planks. Many amusing scenes could be seen,
especially when the unsuspecting dancing pairs were
surprised by water springing from the dance floor or
sprinkling on them after taking a chair.
With his six dashing visits to the Hot Spring around the
year 1700, August II (August the Strong) “triggered an
avalanche” of subsequent noble visitors to Carlsbad.
The Elector’s visits gave wide publicity to Carlsbad. As
a result, the spa became a fashionable and favored
summer address for the elite society set. High society
often came to the spa only to seek amusement and to
relax from the “over-exertion” of their idle lifestyle (today, we would use the trendy term “wellness” to denote their recreational activities in Carlsbad), and not to
take the waters. The fact that the nobility relished the
Carlsbad cuisine is documented by a record of a banquet for the nobility given in Carlsbad on the occasion
of the visit of Friedrich I, King of Prussia, in 1708. The
record states that the guests consumed 647 pounds of
beef, 175 pounds of bacon, four stags, 600 chickens,
1620 eggs, and 480 pounds of butter, as well as a large
quantity of fish, birds, and poultry. The ladies and
gentlemen indeed were “healthy” eaters and were not
at all worried about their spa diet. It’s no wonder that
the genuinely sick spa guests suffered with stomach disorders and the pain of gout caused by excessive consumption of game and heavy red wine.
