Everyone is more or less in agreement on the
existence of this process of signifying, and the
nature of the elements on which it is based.
But in the perspective of a generalized
semiotics, the different types of sign are
“more or less significant” so that it becomes
difficult to make out the limits of their field.

In other words it could be said that a history of
semiotics is interested in all the cases in which
an author critically focuses on the process of
semiosis and/or the sign-systems that make
semiosis possible.

The task of a history of semiotics is to
rediscover the various discussions on the nature
and function of semiosis, but its duty is also to
show: (i) when a given theory was in some way
transversally obsessed by the semiotic problem
without daring to recognize it as such; (ii) when
a given theory explicitly advocated semiotic
endeavor and the subsequent interpretations of
that theory focused only on its non-semiotic
aspects (as was the case of Locke and of many
interpreters of Peirce); (iii) why in both cases the
semiotic awareness was repressed.

Konsekvence
(1)Pokud je vývoj sémiotického myšlení redukován
na nějaký druh emanace objektivní mysli, je toto
myšlení možné pouze jako dyadický znak.
(2) Dyadický model není schopen popisovat
individuální užívání znaku. (! Mluvit o vývoji
sémiotického myšlení je zbytečné.)
(3) Bez zjištění, za jakých podmínek je myšlení
o znaku možné, je sémiotický vývoj
nedefinovatelný.
