rok 2012 nám již svou zimní sílu předvedl, nyní se všichni těšíme na jarní měsíce, plné barev a vůně
všeho nového. Tak, jak se v přírodě rodí nový život, snažíme se také my přivést k životu nové projekty.

das Jahr 2012 stellte uns bereits die Kraft des Winters vor, nun freuen wir uns alle auf die Frühlingsmonate, die voll von neuen Farben und
Düften sind. So, wie in der Natur das neue Leben entsteht, bemühen auch wir uns, ins Leben neu Projekte zu rufen. Das wichtigste Projekt

The year 2012 has already shown us its winter strength and now we are looking forward to spring months full of colours and smells of all
new. New life is coming to the world in nature and similarly, we are trying to bring new projects to life. Building of a new wellness and
spa centre, which our hotel has undoubtedly missed, is the most important for us. You will find modern rooms, a swimming pool, relaxation zones, all completely different from our 310-year old hotel, in the new complex PUPP ROYAL SPA which is being prepared at the
moment. We will inform you about the progress of the construction work all year round. And you will be able to experience the beginning
of another period in the history of our hotel with us, a hotel whose name is known all over the world. We will also invite you to the traditional opening of the spa season in the spring edition of the Pupp Journal. It will be connected with gastronomic experiences which the

Krásný čas adventní a vánoční je v Grandhotelu Pupp vždy umocněn kouzlem jeho staleté historie, příběhy slavných hostů a sváteční
náladou, kterou vyvolává každý detail. Adventní neděle doprovází
zpívání koled, vystoupení mažoretek a zdobení perníčků. Štědro­
večerní večeře v Slavnostním sále, podmalovaná tóny harfy, a vánoční koncerty jsou nezapomenutelným zážitkem. Děkujeme všem

Die schöne Advents- und Weihnachtszeit steigern im Grandhotel
Pupp der Zauber seiner jahrhundertelangen Geschichte, die Storys
der berühmten Gäste und die festliche Atmosphäre, die jedes
Detail hervorruft. An den Adventssonntagen werden Weihnachts­
lieder gesungen, es treten die Majoretten auf und es werden die
Lebkuchen dekoriert. Das Heiligabendessen im Festsaal von
Harfenklängen untermalt und die Weihnachtskonzerte sind ein
unvergessliches Erlebnis. Wir danken allen Gästen für ihren
Besuch und wir freuen uns auf ein weiteres Wiedersehen.

The beautiful time of Advent and Christmas in the Grandhotel
Pupp is always intensified with the charm of its hundred-year-old
history, life stories of its famous visitors and a festive mood created
by each detail. Carol singing, majorettes´performances and gingerbread decorating accompany Advent Sundays and Christmas dinner in the Festive Hall with a harp playing in the background as
well as Christmas concerts are unforgettable experiences. We
would like to thank all our guests for their visit and we are looking

Pupp Ball Festival
Carlsbad Ski Sprint
Lyžování na hlavní třídě města je nezvyklou podívanou, v Karlových
Varech se však stalo tradicí. V pátém ročníku exhibičního závodu
dvojic v běhu na lyžích zvítězil Martin Koukal a Michal Šlesingr.
Druhé místo vybojoval německý pár Oliver Wünsch a Thomas
Freimuth. Na navezeném sněhu na třídě T.G. Masaryka bohužel
nestartoval nejlepší český běžec Lukáš Bauer, který se připravoval
na vrchol sezóny Tour de Ski.
Der Carlsbad Ski Sprint
Das Skilaufen auf der Hauptstraße der Stadt ist ein ungewöhnliches
Spektakel, in Karlsbad wurde es zur Tradition. Den fünften
Jahrgang der Ski Show im Paarlauf gewannen Martin Koukal und
Michal Šlesingr. Den zweiten Platz erreichte das deutsche Paar
Oliver Wünsch und Thomas Freimuth. Leider startete am hergebrachten Schnee auf der T.G. Masaryk Straße der beste tschechische Langläufer Lukáš Bauer nicht, der sich auf den Höhepunkt
der Saison die Tour de Ski vorbereitete.
Carlsbad Ski Sprint
Skiing along the main street in the town is an unusual show which
became a tradition in Karlovy Vary. Martin Koukal and Michal
Šlesinger won the fifth year of the exhibition competition in pairs.
The German skiers Oliver Wünsch and Thomas Freimuth were
placed second. Unfortunately, the best Czech skier Lukáš Bauer did
not take part in the competition on the snow which had been
­brought to T.G. Masaryk Street. He was preparing for the top of the
season – Tour de Ski.
Pupp Bál Festival
Již po sedmnácté se ve Slavnostním sále Grandhotelu Pupp konal
prestižní Pupp Bál Festival. Letošní filmové téma „Angelika“ navodilo romantickou náladu a hosté se jako každoročně měli možnost
setkat s osobnostmi z řad umělců, politiků a sportovců. Hlavním
bodem programu bylo již tradičně muzikálové vystoupení divadla

der renommierte Pupp Ball Festival statt. Das diesjährige Filmthema
„Angelika“ sorgte für eine romantische Stimmung und die Gäste
hatten wie jedes Jahr die Möglichkeit sich mit den Persönlichkeiten
der Kunst, der Politik und des Sports zu treffen. Der Program­m­
höhepunkt war bereits traditionell der Musicalauftritt vom Theater
Broadway. Einen großen Anklang fand der Stehem­pfang mit den
gastronomischen Spezialitäten vom Grand­hotel Pupp.
Pupp Ball Festival
It was for the seventeenth time that the prestigious Pupp Ball
Festival has been held in the Festive Hall of the Grandhotel Pupp.
This year’s film theme ”Angelica” created a romantic atmosphere
and, like every year, guests had an opportunity to meet prominent
artists, politicians and sportsmen. The main item on the programme was traditionally a musical performance of the Broadway theatre. The following banquet with gastronomic specialties met with
a good response as well.

Životopis
MgA. Šimon Kaňka je absolventem Institutu pro umělecká studia
v Ostravě ve hře na violoncello ve třídě prof. Jana Hališky (2005).
V únoru 2006 se stal koncertním mistrem violoncell Karlo­
varského symfonického orchestru, kde dále rozvíjel svou do té
doby bohatou orchestrální, komorní i sólovou činnost. V listopadu 2010 byl Radou města Karlovy Vary pověřen řízením KSO
a v říjnu 2011 se stal na základě vítězství v konkurzním řízení
jeho ředitelem.
Jak se Vám žije v Karlových Varech?
Narodil jsem se v Praze, žil a studoval jsem několik let v Ostravě,
scestoval jsem s hudbou kus světa a myslím, že Karlovy Vary jsou
jedním z nejkrásnějších míst na zeměkouli. Díky tomu, že jsem
přišel do Karlových Varů za prací, jsem velmi vděčný a hrdý, že
jsem právě zde svoji šanci dostal.

Máte ve městě své oblíbené místo?
Mým oblíbeným místem jsou lázeňské lesy. Když jsme se s manželkou do Karlových Varů přistěhovali, bydleli jsme v Tuhnicích přímo pod nimi. Hodně jsme je v té době navštěvovali, učarovaly nám
svojí krásou a energií. Velmi rád se do nich s radostí vracím.
Bohužel díky pracovnímu vytížení v poslední době méně často…
Jaký máte vztah ke Grandhotelu Pupp?
Vzpomínám si na své první chvíle, které jsem ještě jako violoncellista trávil na pódiu Slavnostního sálu, zejména při koncertech
Dvořákova karlovarského podzimu. Musím říci, že jsem byl tou
opravdu slavnostní atmosférou naprosto vtažen a unesen.
Co byste vzkázal našim čtenářům?
Přijďte ochutnat něco z bohaté nabídky koncertů Karlovarského
symfonického orchestru. A dovolte mi popřát vám nerušené chvíle
krásného hudebního prožitku.

Der Lebenslauf
MgA. Šimon Kaňka absolvierte im Jahre 2005 das Studium an der
Fakultät für Kunst in Ostrava (Ostrau), das Violoncellospiel in der
Klasse von Prof. Jan Hališka. Im Februar 2006 wurde er Violoncello
Konzertmeister des Karlsbader Symphonieorchesters, wo er weiter
seine bisherige reiche orchestrale, Kammer- sowie Solotätigkeit
entwickelte. Im November 2010 wurde er von dem Karlsbader
Stadtrat mit der Leitung des KSO beauftragt und im Oktober 2011
gewann er das Konkursverfahren und wurde sein Direktor.
Wie lebt es sich Ihnen in Karlsbad?
Ich bin in Prag geboren, ich habe einige Jahre in Ostrava gelebt und
studiert, ich bin dank der Musik durch die ganze Welt gereist und
ich meine, dass Karlsbad zu den schönsten Plätzen auf der Erde
gehört. Dank dem, dass ich nach Karlsbad wegen der Arbeit gekommen bin, bin ich sehr dankbar und stolz, dass ich gerade hier
meine Chance bekommen habe.
Haben Sie in der Stadt einen Lieblingsort?
Mein Lieblingsort sind die Kurwälder. Als ich mit meiner Ehefrau
nach Karlsbad umgezogen bin, haben wir in Tuhnice direkt unter
ihnen gewohnt. Wir haben sie in dieser Zeit viel besucht, sie haben
uns mit ihrer Schönheit und Energie bezaubert. Ich kehre in sie mit
großer Freude sehr gern zurück. In der letzten Zeit wegen der vielen Arbeitspflichten leider weniger…
Welche Beziehung haben Sie zum Grandhotel Pupp?
Ich erinnere mich an meine ersten Augenblicke, die ich noch als
Violoncellist am Podium des Festsaales verbrachte, vor allem
während der Konzerte des Festivals Dvořáks Karlsbader Herbst.
Ich muss sagen, dass ich von der wirklich festlichen Atmosphäre
völlig eingezogen und hingerissen war.
Was würden Sie unseren Lesern ausrichten?
Kommen Sie etwas aus dem reichen Angebot der Konzerte des
Karlsbader Symphonieorchesters auskosten. Und gestatten Sie mir,
Ihnen ungestörte Momente eines schönen Musikerlebnisses zu
wünschen.

Curriculum vitae
Šimon Kaňka MgA. graduated from the Institute for Art Studies in
Ostrava where he had studied the violoncello under Professor Jan
Hališka (2005). He became the principal cellist of the Karlovy Vary
Symphony Orchestra in the February of 2006 and continued here
his extensive orchestral and chamber activities as well as his activity as a soloist. The Council of the Town of Karlovy Vary charged

him to lead the KSO in the November of 2010 and after he had won
a competition in the October of 2011, he became its director.
How do you like living in Karlovy Vary?
I was born in Prague and I lived in Ostrava for several years, I have
travelled the world with music and I think that Karlovy Vary is one
of the most beautiful places on earth. I came to Karlovy Vary looking for work and I am very grateful and proud that I found my
opportunity just here.
Do you have your favourite place in the town?
My favourite place are spa woods. When I moved to Karlovy Vary
with my wife, we lived in Tuhnice directly under them. We used to
go there frequently in those days as we were fascinated by their beauty and energy. And I am very pleased any time I can return to them.
Unfortunately, it is not so often as I have been very busy recently...
What is your relation to the Grandhotel Pupp?
I remember the first whiles I spent on the stage of the Festive Hall
still as a cellist, especially during the concerts of the Dvořák
Autumn Festival. I have to say that the festive atmosphere fully
absorbed me and filled me with enthusiasm.
What message do you have for our readers?
Come and taste something from the wide offer of concerts of the
Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra. And let me wish you a beautiful musical experience.

Z hudební historie
Grandhotelu Pupp
V místech pravého křídla dnešního Grandhotelu Pupp stával Saský
sál, tzv. Lusthaus, který byl prvním místem koncertů a zábav lázeňských hostů. O jeho zrod se zasloužil počátkem 18. století tehdy
nejvýznamnější návštěvník Karlových Varů, saský kurfiřt August
Silný. Impozantní dvoranu Saského sálu několikrát poctil svou návštěvou v letech 1718-1720 také Johann Sebastian Bach.
V domě Boží oko, na jehož místě je dnes hotelové křídlo, kde najdete Café Pupp, pobýval v roce 1812 Ludwig van Beethoven.

Výtěžek svého dobročinného koncertu v Saském sále věnoval lázním Baden u Vídně, které postihl požár. Po napoleonských válkách
se v Saském sále pořádaly oslavy na počest maršála Blüchera, vítěze
nad Napoleonem u Waterloo. Vystoupila zde řada umělců zvučných jmen. Italská zpěvačky Angelica Catalani vzbudila svým vystoupením v roce 1818 velký ohlas. Dosud žádný umělec však nestrhl publikum k takovému nadšení jako houslista Nicolo Paganini
v roce 1828. Při vystoupení trpěl zánětem okostice a při jeho ďábelsky naléhavé hře praskaly i struny. Ve druhé polovině 19. století
přijížděly do lázní zástupy obdivovatelů setkat se alespoň pohledem
s Richardem Wagnerem, Fryderykem Chopinem, Ferencem
Lisztem, Zdeňkem Fibichem, Johannesem Brahmsem a dalšími.
Každá slavná osobnost byla pro podnik Puppů neocenitelnou rek­
lamou. Jeden z největších českých hudebních velikánů, Antonín
Dvořák, pobýval v lázeňském městě v letech 1879-1896 sedmkrát.
21. června 1894 zazněla v Karlových Varech kontinentální premiéra
jeho Symfonie č. 9 Z Nového světa.
Slavnostní sál Grandhotelu Pupp získal počátkem 20. století novou
podobu díky vídeňským architektům Fellnerovi a Helmerovi. V roce 1926 postavili krnovští varhanáři v tomto sále velké koncertní
varhany. V té době měl Grandhotel Pupp také svůj lázeňský orchestr.

ECHOES OF MUSIC
A v seznamu hostů čteme jména: Edvard Grieg, Ema Destinová,
Oskar Nedbal, Leoš Janáček, Richard Strauss, David Oistrach.
V roce 1947 přijíždí do Karlových Varů český hudební skladatel
Josef Bohuslav Foerster. Ve druhé polovině 20. století zde koncertuje šansoniér Gilbert Bécaud a jazzman Chris Barber. V roce 2007
se ve Grandhotelu Pupp natáčely scény filmu o Edith Piaf. Ne náhodou byl pro natáčení vybrán i Slavnostní sál - vždyť jeho stěny
jsou prodchnuty výkony velikánů hudebního světa. Proto i v současnosti slavnostní koncerty Karlovarského symfonického orchestru zaznívají právě zde.

vom Grandhotel Pupp
An der Stelle, wo es heute den rechten Flügel vom Grandhotel Pupp
gibt, stand der Sächsische Saal, der erste Veranstaltungsort von
Konzerten und Unterhaltungen für die Kurgäste, das sog. Lusthaus.
Seine Gründung verdankte er am Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts dem
damals bedeutendsten Besucher von Karlsbad, dem sächsischen
Kurfürsten August dem Starken. Die imposante Halle des
Sächsischen Saales ehrte mehrmals mit seinem Besuch in den
Jahren 1718-1720 auch Johann Sebastian Bach.
Im Haus Gottes Auge, an dessen Stelle es heute den Hotelflügel gibt,
wo man das Café Pupp findet, wohnte im Jahre 1812 Ludwig van
Beethoven. Den Ertrag seines Wohltätigkeitskonzerts im Sächsischen
Saal widmete er dem Kurort Baden bei Wien, den ein Brand befiel.
Nach den Napoleonischen Kriegen veranstaltete man im Sächsischen

Saal die Feiern zu Ehren von Marschall Blücher, dem Sieger über
Napoleon bei Waterloo. Es traten hier viele Künstler klangvoller
Namen auf. Die italienische Sängerin Angelica Catalani hatte mit
ihrem Auftritt im Jahre 1818 einen riesigen Erfolg. Bisher begeisterte jedoch kein Künstler das Publikum so, wie im Jahre 1828 der
Geigenspieler Nicolo Paganini. Während des Auftritts litt er an
Knochenhautentzündung und bei seinem dämonisch intensiven
Spiel rissen auch die Saiten. In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts
kamen ins Bad zahlreiche Bewunderer sich wenigsten mit einem
Blick mit Richard Wagner, Fryderyk Chopin, Ferenc Liszt, Zdeňek
Fibich, Johannes Brahms und anderen zu treffen. Jede berühmte
Persönlichkeit war für den Betrieb der Familie Pupp eine unschätzbare Werbung. Einer der größten tschechischen Musikgenies,
Antonín Dvořák, weilte im Kurort in den Jahren 1879 -1896 sieben
Mal. Am 21. Juni 1894 erklang in Karlsbad seine Symphonie Nr. 9
Aus der Neuen Welt als die kontinentale Premiere.
Der Festsaal vom Grandhotel Pupp bekam am Anfang des 20.
Jahrhunderts dank der Wiener Architekten Fellner und Helmer ein
neues Aussehen. Im Jahre 1926 bauten die Orgelbauer aus Krnov
(Jägerndorf) in diesem Saal eine große Konzertorgel. In dieser Zeit
hatte das Grandhotel Pupp auch sein Kurorchester. Und in der
Gästeliste liest man die Namen: Edvard Grieg, Ema Destinová,
Oskar Nedbal, Leoš Janáček, Richard Strauss, David Oistrach.
Im Jahre 1947 kommt nach Karlsbad der tschechische Komponist
Josef Bohuslav Foerster. Und unter den Filmstars beginnt die Ära
der Beliebtheit vom Grandhotel Pupp. Von den Persönlichkeiten
der Musikwelt traten hier in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts
der Chansonier Gilbert Bécaud und der Jazzman Chris Barber auf.
Im Jahre 2007 drehte man im Grandhotel Pupp die Szenen des
Filmes über Edith Piaf. Nicht durch Zufall wurde für die
Dreharbeiten auch der Festsaal ausgesucht – seine Wände sind ja
von hervorragenden Leistungen der Musikgenies durchdrungen.
Deshalb erklingen auch heute die Festkonzerte des Karlsbader
Symphonieorchesters gerade hier.

The Saxon Hall was the first place where concerts and balls for spa

where the right wing of the Grandhotel Pupp can be found today.
Its construction was initiated by the most prominent visitor to
Karlovy Vary of those days, the Saxon elector August the Strong, in
the 18th century. Johann Sebastian Bach, too, visited the impressive
Saxon Hall several times between 1718 and 1720.
Ludwig van Beethoven stayed in the house God’s Eye in 1812.
There is a hotel wing with the Café Pupp in its place now.
Beethoven gave the money raised at his benefit concert in the
ECHOES OF MUSIC
20th century. Organ builders from Krnov built a big concert organ
in this hall. The Grandhotel Pupp had its own spa orchestra in
those days. The list of guests includes names like: Edvard Grieg,
Ema Destinová, Oskar Nedbal, Leoš Janáček, Richard Strauss or
David Oistrach.
The Czech music composer Josef Bohuslav Foerster is coming to
Karlovy Vary in 1947. It is the beginning of the period of popularity of Karlovy Vary with film stars. The chanson singer Gilbert
Bécaud and the jazzman Chris Barber, who appear here in the second half of the 20th century, represent the world of music. Some
scenes for the film about Edit Piaf were shot in the Grandhotel
Pupp in 2007. The Festive Hall was not chosen for the shooting
accidentally – after all, its walls are filled with brilliant performances of the most prominent personalities from the world of music.
That is why the gala concerts of the Karlovy Vary Symphony
Orchestra are held just here even in the present.

Saxon Hall to the spa Baden Baden near Vienna which had been
struck by fire. After the Napoleonic Wars, celebrations in honour of
Marshal Blücher, the man who had defeated Napoleon in the Battle
of Waterloo, were held in the Saxon Hall. A number of artists of
fine sounding names appeared here. The Italian singer Angelica
Catalani´s concert in 1818 met with a good response. However,
none of the artists had taken his audience with him so much before
as the violinist Niccolo Paganini did in 1828. He suffered from periostitis during his concert and when he was playing in his devilish
way, strings were snapping.
Crowds of admirers came to the spa in the second half of the 19th
century just to catch a glimpse of Richard Wagner, Fryderyk
Chopin, Ferenc Liszt, Zdeněk Fibich, Johannes Brahms and others.
Each famous personality was an invaluable piece of advertisement
for the Pupp firm. One of the Czech geniuses of music, Antonín
Dvořák, stayed in the spa town altogether seven times between
1879 and 1896. The master’s New World Symphony, symphony
No. 7, had its continental premiere in Karlovy Vary.
The Festive Hall of the Grandhotel Pupp got a new appearance
thanks to the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer in the early

– ječmen, podobně jako jiné obiloviny, má vysoký obsah škrobu.
Klíčením se tyto škroby mění v cukry a ty při dalším zpracování na
alkohol. Proto se vyčištěný ječmen máčí 2-3 dny v nádržích s pramenitou vodou (steeps), kdy pojme až 40 % svého objemu vody.
Poté se rozprostře ve zhruba třiceti centimetrové vrstvě na betonové
ploše (floor maltings), kde ve vlhku a tmě během 7-12 dnů za pravidelného převracení vyklíčí. (Doba procesu závisí na teplotě.) Toto
je tradiční zpracování, které používá již jen několik málo palíren
(např. Springbank). Dnes se stále více používá kontinuální způsob
sladování ve válcovitých nádobách, tzv. saladin maltings. Vznikne
tzv. zelený slad (green malt), kdy se složité škroby štěpí za pomoci
enzymu diastáza, vzniklého při klíčení, na maltozu, tj. jednoduché
cukry ve vodě rozpustné. Nyní sladovník (maltster), který musí
poznat optimální okamžik, proces přeruší. Tímto úkonem maltster
může značně ovlivnit chuť whisky. Ječmen se pak suší v sušárnách
(malt kilns) nad ohněm z rašeliny – proto ona kouřová a rašelinová
příchuť nápoje. Zde záleží také na tom, zda se topí slatinnou rašelinou vznikající z mechů, či rašelinou lesní vzniklou z listí a větví.
V současnosti se však často topí naftou, plynem nebo jen část doby
rašelinou, část jiným způsobem. Sušením, které trvá v průměru
18 hodin, se klíčení zastaví. Následně se slad třikrát rozemele na
sladový šrot připomínající hrubou mouku (drti se říká mashing)
a smíchá v zapařovacích kádích (mash tun či mash tub) s horkou
vodou o teplotě asi 63 °C. Kádě jsou většinou z nerezové oceli, někde

ještě najdeme původní litinové. Po soustavném míchání a důkladném, většinou trojnásobném vyloužení vznikne sladká tekutina tzv.
zápara či předzákvas (wort). Na druhé vyluhování se používá voda
o teplotě přes 70 °C, na třetí až 90 °C. I kvalita vody je zde velmi
důležitá a ovlivňuje výslednou chuť. Rašelinovou příchuť dodává
často nápoji i použitá voda. Např. na ostrově Islay voda vedená do
palíren (Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Lagavulin) protéká přes močálová rašeliniště. V USA i v Kanadě se v několika palírnách stejným způsobem
sladuje i žito.
Při výrobě obilné whisky (grain) se nesladované obiloviny (většinou pšenice či kukuřice) vaří 3,5 hodiny v páře za přetlaku a stálého míchání. Během této doby popraskají buňky obsahující škrob
a po smíchání s malým množstvím sladovaného ječmene se škrob
mění na cukr. Sladovaný ječmen zde díky enzymu diastáza působí
jako katalyzátor.
Ruční příprava sladu na betonových plochách dnes již téměř ne­
existuje, během let se zaváděly nové metody, kolem r. 1900 Glen
Grant a Speyburn začaly zavádět sušení sladu systémem Galland
pneumatic drum, i ten však brzy zastaral. V r. 1948 byl zaveden
dosti převratný systém Saladin Box v palírnách North British
(1948), Glen Mhor (1949), Tamdhu (1950) a postupně se rozšířil
téměř všude. Vývoj však ještě pokročil - výroba sladu probíhá
v bubnových sladovacích zařízeních a centralizuje se. Např. Scottish
Malt Distillers vyrábí slad asi pro 30 palíren. Některé z palíren,
např. Highland Park, Bowmore, Balvenie, Kilchoman a Laphroaig ,
si slad částečně připravují samy, jen část dokupují. Pro svou potřebu si slad plně zajišťuje pouze Springbank, Tamdhu a Glen Ord, kde
se slad vyrábí ještě pro šest dalších palíren.

– die Gerste, ähnlich wie die anderen Getreide, hat einen hohen
Stärkeinhalt. Durch die Keimung verändern sich diese Stärken in
die Zucker und diese bei einer weiteren Verarbeitung auf den
Alkohol. Deshalb quillt man die gesäuberte Gerste 2-3 Tage in den
Tanks mit Quellwasser (steeps), wo sie bis zu
40 % seines Wasservolumens aufnimmt.
Danach verbreitet man sie in einer zirka
dreißig Zentimeter hohen Schicht auf einer
Betonfläche (floor maltings), wo sie in
Feuchtigkeit und Finsternis binnen 7-12
Tagen beim regelmäßigen Wenden auf­
keimt. (Die Prozessdauer hängt von der
Temperatur ab.) Dies ist die traditionelle
Verarbeitung, die bereits nur einige wenige Brennereien anwenden (z. B. Spring­
bank). Heute nutzt man immer mehr die
kontinuierliche Art vom Mälzen in den
Zylinderbehältern, sog. saladin maltings.
Es entsteht das sog. grüne Malz (green
malt), indem sich die komplizierten
Stärken mithilfe des Enzyms
Diastase, das bei der Keimung
entsteht, auf Maltose spalten,
die einfachen wasserlöslichen
Zucker. Nun unterbricht der
Mälzer (maltster), der den geeigneten Augenblick erkennen
muss, den Prozess. Mit dieser
Handlung kann der maltster bedeutend den Whisky­geschmack
beeinflussen. Die Gerste wird
danach im Trocken­raum (malt
kilns) über dem Feuer aus dem
Torf getrocknet – deshalb jener
Rauch- und Torfgeschmack des
Getränks. Hier kommt es auch
darauf an, ob man mit dem
Moortorf, der aus dem Moos
entstand, oder mit dem Waldtorf,
der aus den Blättern und Ästen
entstand, heizt. Zurzeit wird jedoch oft mit Erdöl oder mit Gas
geheizt und nur einen Zeitraum
mit dem Torf. Durch das
Trocknen, das im Durchschnitt

18 Stunden dauert, wird die Keimung gestoppt. Anschließend wird
das Malz dreimal zu einem Malzschrot, der an griffiges Mehl erinnert (den Schrot nennt man mashing), gemahlen und man mischt
ihn in Maischtonnen (mash tun oder mash tub) mit heißem Wasser
von einer Temperatur von circa 63 °C. Die Tonnen sind meistens
aus rostfreiem Stahl, irgendwo findet man noch die ursprünglichen
aus Gusseisen. Nach ständigem Mischen und einem gründlichen,
meistens dreifachen Auslaugen, entsteht eine süße Flüssigkeit die
sog. Maische oder der Vorgäransatz (wort). Zum zweiten Auslaugen
benutzt man das Wasser von einer Temperatur über 70 °C, zum
dritten das Wasser von einer Temperatur bis zu 90 °C. Auch die
Wasserqualität ist hier sehr wichtig und beeinflusst den resultierenden Geschmack. Den Torfbeigeschmack gibt dem Getränk oft auch
das benutzte Wasser. Zum Beispiel auf der Insel Islay fließt das
Wasser in die Brennereien (Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Lagavulin) über das
Torfmoor durch. In den USA sowie in Kanada mälzt man in eini­
gen Brennereien auf gleiche Art und Weise auch den Roggen.
Bei der Herstellung des Getreidewhiskys (grain) kocht man die
ungemälzten Getreide (meistens den Weizen und den Mais)
3,5 Stunden im Dampf unter Überdruck und mischt sie ständig.
Während dieser Zeit platzen die Zellen, die die Stärke beinhalten
und nachdem sie mit einer kleinen Menge der Malzgerste vermischt werden, verändert sich die Stärke in Zucker. Die Malzgerste
wirkt hier dank des Enzyms Diastase als ein Katalysator.
Die manuelle Malzvorbereitung auf den Betonflächen gibt es
heute fast nicht mehr, während der Jahre führte man neue
Methoden ein, um das Jahr 1900 begannen Glen Grant und
Speyburn das Trocknen vom Malz mit dem System Galland pneu­
matic drum einzuführen, auch dieses wurde bald veraltet. Im
Jahre 1948 wurde ein sehr fortschrittliches System Saladin Box
eingeführt, in den Brennereien North British (1948), Glen Mhor
(1949), Tamdhu (1950) und nach und nach verbreitete es sich fast
überall. Die Entwicklung ging aber noch weiter – die Malzher­
stellung verläuft in Trommelmalzanlagen und zentralisiert sich.
Zum Beispiel Scottish Malt Distillers erzeugt das Malz für ungefähr 30 Brennereien. Manche von den Brennereien z. B. Highland
Park, Bowmore, Balvenie, Kilchoman und Laphroaig bereiten
sich das Malz teilweise selbst vor, nur einen Teil kaufen sie nach.
Für ihren Bedarf sichert sich voll das Malz nur Springbank,
Tamdhu und Glen Ord, wo man das Malz noch für sechs weitere
Brennereien erzeugt.

- barley, like other grains, contains a high amount of starch.
Through germination, these starches are converted into sugars and
further on into alcohol.
First barley is steeped in containers with spring water (steeps) for
2 or 3 days where it absorbs about 40 % of its future content of
water. Then it is spread in a thirty-centimetre-layer on a concrete
floor (floor maltings) in a dark and wet room and turned over at
regular intervals. It is left there for 7 up to 12 days until it germinates. (The length of the process depends on temperature.) This is
a traditional way of malting which is still used only in few distilleries (e.g. Springbank). At present a continuous way of malting in
cylindrical vessels (Saladin maltings) is used more often. Its result
is the green malt where complex starches are split by means of the
enzyme diastase, which appears during the germination, into simple sugars which are soluble in water. Now the maltster, who must
be able to identify the right moment, stops the process. In this way
the maltster can considerably influence the final taste of whisky.
Then barley is dried in special rooms called malt kilns above a peat­
-heated fire – that is why the beverage has the smoky and peaty
flavour. The flavour also depends on the kind of peat – it can be
from peat bogs (consisting mainly of decayed mosses) of from the
wood (consisting of decayed branches and leaves). These days oil or
gas is often used for heating or peat is used only for a part of the
heating time. Drying, which takes on average 18 hours, stops the
germination. Then the malt is ground three times into grist, which
resembles coarse flour, and it is mixed with hot water (63 °C) in
large vessels called mash tuns or mash tubs. The vessels are usually
made from stainless steel, somewhere you can still find the original
cast-iron ones. The mash (the mixture of the grist and hot water) is
stirred systematically and steeped thoroughly – usually three times.
The result is a sugary liquid called wort. The temperature of the
water used for the second steeping is more than 70 °C and for the
third steeping up to 90 °C. The quality of water is also important
and affects the final taste of whisky.
It is often water that adds the peaty flavour to whisky. E.g. the water
used in distilleries on the island of Islay (Ardbeg, Laphroaig,
Lagavulin) flows through pet bogs.
In some distilleries in the U.S.A. and Canada, rye is malted in the
same way. When making grain whisky, unmalted cereals (usually
wheat or maize) are cooked under pressure using steam for 3 and
a half hours and are stirred continuously. The cells containing
starch burst during this time and starch converts into sugar after it
is mixed with a small amount of malted rye. Thanks to the diastase
enzyme, the malted rye works as a catalyser here.
Hardly anywhere malt is made manually on concrete floors these
days. New methods have been introduced in the course of time. In

about 1900 Glen Grant and Speyburn started to dry malt by means
of the Gallant Pneumatic Drum system, however, it fell out of use
soon. In 1948 a quite revolutionary Saladin Box system was introduced in the distilleries North British 1948), Glen Mhor (1949),
Tamdhu (1950) and it gradually spread everywhere. But the development went on – malt is made in drum malting plant and is being
centralized. E.g. Scottish Malt Distillers produce malt for about
30 distilleries. Some of the distilleries, e.g. Highland Park, Bowmore,
Balvenie, Kilchoman and Laphroaig partly produce their own malt
and buy only a part of it. Only the distilleries Springbank, Tamdhu
and Glen Ord supply their needs for malt by themselves and they
also produce malt for six other distilleries.

V Karlových Varech byl hostem
Mezinárodního filmového festivalu v letech 1982 a 2000. Pobýval
samozřejmě v Grandhotelu Pupp.
Jeho filmografie zahrnuje desítky
titulů různých žánrů. Už od dětství chtěl být hercem, později režisérem, věnoval se jazzu a zpěvu.
V Miláně studoval ekonomii, prodával knihy, hrál divadlo. Na stříbrném plátně byl pak nesčetněkrát
kovbojem, banditou, hrdinou
i padouchem. Natočil na 150 filmů. Prosadil se rolí Lancelota ve filmu Camelot - Král Artuš a jeho družina
v roce 1967 (r. J. Logan). Při natáčení zde potkal svou lásku, anglickou herečku Vanessu Redgraveovou. S ní má jediného syna Carla Gabriela, který
se věnuje filmové režii.
Franco Nero ztělesňuje ve filmech dva rozdílné druhy hrdinů. Jednak mužné, svérázné typy (Den sovy - r. D. Damiani, Gott mit uns - r. G. Montaldo),
Vůně cibule - r. Enzo G. Castellari), jednak složité postavy rozpolcených
slabochů (Vyšetřování skončilo, zapomeňte- r. D. Damiani). Sám si váží
účinkování v Buñuelově díle Tristana (1971) po boku Catherine Deneuveové.
V roce 1998 vytvořil hlavní postavu zavražděného módního návrháře
Gianniho Versace ve snímku Versace: Vražda (r. M. Golan). Za svou kariéru
získal nepřeberné množství světových i evropských ocenění. V něčem je
Nero typický Ital: zbožňuje pizzu a fotbal, nedrží diety. Říká se, že má raději ženy než jídlo, ale v restauraci Grandhotelu Pupp byl navýsost spokojen.
Der Filmverführer Franco Nero feierte voriges Jahr seinen siebzigsten
Geburtstag. In Karlsbad war er am Internationalen Filmfestival in den Jahren
1982 und 2000 zu Gast. Er wohnte natürlich im Grandhotel Pupp. Seine
Filmografie umfasst Dutzende Titel in verschiedenen Genres. Seit Kindheit
wollte er Schauspieler werden, später ein Regisseur, er widmete sich dem Jazz
und dem Gesang. In Mailand studierte er Ökonomie, er verkaufte Bücher,
spielte Theater. Auf der silbernen Leinwand war er dann unzählig mal ein
Cowboy, ein Bandit, ein Held sowie ein Schurke. Er drehte an die 150 Filme.
Er setzte sich mit der Rolle von Lancelot im Film Camelot – Am Hofe König
Arthurs im Jahre 1967 durch (Regie J. Logan). Während der Dreharbeiten traf
er seine Liebe, die englische Schauspielerin Vanessa Redgrave. Mit ihr hat er
einen einzigen Sohn Carl Gabriel, der sich der Filmregie widmet.
Franco Nero verkörpert in den Filmen zwei verschiedene Arten von
Helden. Einerseits männliche, eigenartige Typen (Tag der Eule - Regie
D. Damiani, Gott mit uns - Regie G. Montaldo, Zwiebel-Jack räumt auf –
Regie Enzo G. Castellari), anderseits komplizierte Personen von zwiespälti-

gen Schwächlingen (Das Verfahren ist eingestellt: Vergessen Sie's - Regie
D. Damiani). Er selbst schätzt die Rolle in dem Werk vom Regisseur Buñuel
Tristana (1971) an Seite von Catherine Deneuve. Im Jahre 1998 spielte er die
Hauptfigur des ermordeten Modedesigners Gianni Versace im Film Gianni
Versace - Der Mord (Regie M. Golan). Während seiner Laufbahn erhielt er
zahlreiche Preise in Europa und in der Welt. In manchem ist Nero ein typischer Italiener: Er liebt die Pizza und den Fußball, er hält keine Diäten.
Man sagt, dass er lieber die Frauen als das Essen hat, aber im Restaurant
vom Grandhotel Pupp war er höchstens zufrieden.
The film seducer Franco Nero celebrated his 70th birthday last year. He was the
guest of the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary in 1982 and 2000. He
stayed in the Grandhotel Pupp, of course. His films include tens of titles of different genres. Franco Nero wanted to be an actor and later a director as a child already and he also went in for jazz and singing. He studied economy in Milano,
sold books and played in a theatre. The actor has been a cowboy, bandit, hero and
then a villain many times on the film screen. He has played in about 150 films. He
became famous thanks to the part of Lancelot in the film Camelot in the year 1967
(dir. J. Logan). Nero met his love, the English actress Vanessa Redgrave, during the
shooting. He has his only son Carl Gabriel, a film director, with her.
Franco Nero plays two different types of heroes. They are manly, eccentric
types on the one hand (Day of the Owl, dir D. Damiani or Gott mit uns, dir.
G. Montaldo), Cry, Onion!, dir. Enzo G. Castellari) and complicated characters
of split weaklings (The Case Is Closed, Forget, dir. D. Damiani). He himself
thinks highly of his part in Buñuel´s film Tristana (1971) where he played together with Catherine Deneuve. In 1998 he created the main character of the fashion designer Gianni Versace in the film The Versace Murder (dir. M. Golan).
He has won countless European and world awards and prizes during his career.
Nero is a typical Italian in some respects – he loves pizza and football above all
and does not stick to any diet. He is said to prefer women to food, however, he
was extremely satisfied in the restaurant of the Grandhotel Pupp.

GRANDHOTEL PUPP
Rok 2012 se zapíše do dějin Grandhotelu Pupp výstavbou nového
lázeňského komplexu Pupp Royal Spa. Rozsáhlý balneoprovoz
s vnitřním bazénem vyroste v zadním areálu hotelu. Přípravná fáze
odstartovala v prvních lednových dnech.
V celé historii Grandhotelu Pupp začíná jedna z největších dostaveb, díky které se služby hotelu rozšíří o lázeňské a relaxační procedury, v dnešní době tolik žádané. Autorem vybraného projektu je
Ing. arch. Karel Mrázek z architektonického atelieru KAAMA, s.r.o.
Unikátní volba moderních materiálů dle soudobých trendů, v kontrastu s barokní podobou Grandhotelu Pupp, dá jistě novému
prostoru náležitě vyniknout. Důležitou součástí projektu byl výběr
barev a umístění prosvětlení tak, aby působilo odpočinkově a pomohlo rychleji navodit stav relaxace. Hlavním přínosem pro po-

Die nahe Zukunft
Das Jahr 2012 schreibt sich in die Geschichte vom Grandhotel
Pupp durch den Aufbau des neuen Kurkomplexes Pupp Royal Spa
ein. Der umfangreiche Balneobetrieb mit einem Swimmingpool
wächst im hinteren Hotelgelände. Die Vorbereitungsphase startete
in den ersten Januartagen.
In der gesamten Grandhotel Pupp Geschichte handelt es sich um
eine der größten Anbauten, dank der sich die Dienstleistungen des
Hotels um Kur- und Erholungsanwendungen erweitern, die in der
heutigen Zeit so erwünscht sind. Der Autor des ausgesuchten
Projekts ist der Ing. Architekt Karel Mrázek von dem architektoni­
schen Atelier KAAMA, Gmbh. Eine einmalige Auswahl der modernen Materialien den heutigen Trends entsprechend, im Kontrast
zur barocken Gestaltung vom Grandhotel Pupp, lässt sicher den
neuen Raum zurecht emporkommen. Ein wichtiger
Projektbestandteil war die Farbenauswahl und die Anbringung der
Beleuchtung so, dass sie erholsam wirken und schneller zur
Entspannung verhelfen.

Der wichtigste Beitrag zu den Dienstleistungen im Grandhotel
Pupp wird das neue Balneozentrum mit einer breiten Skala von
traditionellen sowie völlig neuen Anwendungen, einem
Swimmingpool und einem modern ausgestatteten Fitnesscenter.
Im Komplex wird auch ein privates Wellness Zentrum
mit Whirlpool, einigen Massagetischen und einem Erholungspart
für zwei Personen.

The near future
The year 2012 will enter the history of the Grandhotel Pupp owing
to the construction of the new spa complex Pupp Royal Spa. The
extensive spa department with an inner swimming pool will grow
on the back grounds of the hotel. The preparatory stage started in
early January.
It will be one of the biggest extensions in the whole history of the
Grandhotel Pupp thanks to which the hotel services will be extended by spa treatments and relaxation procedures, which are so popular and so much in demand these days. The design was made by
Ing. arch. Karel Mrázek from the architectural studio KAAMA Ltd.
The unique choice of materials which follow today’s trends in contrast with the Baroque appearance of the Grandhotel Pupp will
surely bring the new space out. The choice of colours and the placement of lights are an important part of the design and help to
create the atmosphere of relaxation.

Muzeum Karlovy Vary
Vlastivědné muzeum bylo v Karlových Varech založeno krátce po
roce 1865 na popud významného balneologa Med. Dr. Josefa
Löschnera. Při muzeu vznikla i regionální knihovna a archiv.
Muzejní sbírky se samozřejmě do současnosti značně rozrostly
a několikrát změnily své umístění. Od roku 1987 sídlí stálá expozice v rekonstruované budově bývalého hejtmanství z roku 1853.
Z Grandhotelu Pupp máte do muzea jen pár kroků, stačí přejít most
na Novou louku a vyhledat budovu č. 23.
Muzejní expozice nabízí přehled o dějinách, přírodě a lázeňství
Karlovarska. Bohatý soubor exponátů prezentuje živou a neživou
přírodu, archeologické nálezy, ukazuje vývoj osídlení kraje, počátky
měst a hornické činnosti v regionu. Budete obdivovat cenné středověké a barokní plastiky, nadchnou vás předměty užitého umění
a výtvory uměleckých řemesel - cín, sklo, porcelán, nábytek, textil,
nářadí a nástroje. Zajímavé jsou práce karlovarských puškařů a brusičů vřídlovce. Seznámíte se s produkcí karlovarských porcelánek

a sklárny Moser. Poznáte dokumenty o vývoji lázeňství, výstavbě
významných budov, prohlédnete si regionální grafiky, plastiky, obrazy. Vaši pozornost jistě upoutá rozlehlý model Karlových Varů představující město v době kolem roku 1650.
V přízemí muzea jsou sály, kde jsou pořádány pravidelné výstavy

1865 aus Initiative des bedeutenden Balneologen Med. Dr. Josef
Löschner gegründet. Beim Museum entstanden auch eine regionale Bibliothek und ein Archiv. Die Museumssammlungen sind bis

heute natürlich bedeutend mehr geworden und haben mehrmals
ihren Platz gewechselt. Seit dem Jahre 1987 gibt es die Dauer­
ausstellung in dem neu hergerichteten Gebäude der ehemaligen
Hauptmannschaft aus dem Jahre 1853. Von dem Grandhotel Pupp
haben Sie es ins Museum nur ein paar Schritte, es reicht, über die
Brücke auf die Neue Wiese zu gehen und das Gebäude Nr. 23 aufzusuchen.
Die Museumsausstellung bietet eine Übersicht über die
Geschichte, die Natur und das Kurwesen der Karlsbader Region.
Viele Ausstellungsstücke präsentieren die lebendige und die unbelebte Natur. Man zeigt die archäologischen Funde, die
Entwicklung der Besiedlung der Region, den Ursprung der Städte
und des Bergbaus in der Gegend. Sie werden die wertvollen mittelalterlichen und barocken Plastiken bewundern, es beeindrucken Sie die Gegenstände der Gebrauchskunst und die Erzeugnisse
der Kunsthandwerke – das Zinn, das Glas, das Porzellan, die

Dokumente über die Entwicklung des Kurwesens, den Aufbau
der bedeutenden Gebäude, weiter die regionalen Grafiken,
Plastiken und Bilder. Ihrer Aufmerksamkeit entgeht sicher nicht
das umfangreiche Modell von Karlsbad, das die Stadt in der Zeit
um das Jahr 1650 darstellt.
Im Erdgeschoss des Museums gibt es Säle, wo man regelmäßig

the Museum of Karlovy Vary
The establishment of the museum relating to national history and
geography was initiated by the prominent balneologist Josef
Löschner M.D. The museum was founded in Karlovy Vary shortly
after 1865. It included a regional library and archives. The collections of the museum have grown considerably until these days, of
course, and have also changed their location several times. Since
1987, the permanent exhibition has had its seat in the renovated
building of the former district office dating from 1853. It is just
a few steps from the Grandhotel Pupp, you only have to cross the
bridge to Nová louka Street and find building No. 23.
The exhibitions provide information about history, nature and
balneology in the Karlovy Vary region. Rich collections present living and inanimate nature and archaeological findings, they show
the development in the colonization of the region, the origins of
towns and mining activities in the region.
You will admire valuable medieval and Baroque sculptures and will
be fascinated by the objects of applied art and handicraft products
– tin, glass, porcelain, furniture, textile and tools. The products by
Karlovy Vary gunsmiths and aragonite cutters are interesting as
well. You will get acquainted with the production of Karlovy Vary
glass and porcelain factories. You will see the documents about the
development of balneology and the construction of important
buildings, regional graphics, sculptures and pictures. A big model
of Karlovy Vary which represents the town in about 1650 will surely attract your attention.
There are rooms for regular mounting of exhibitions and organizing
other cultural programmes on the ground floor. Topical information,

Pomníky slavných básníků
Pojďme se poklonit dvěma básníkům, jejichž jméno zná celý svět.
Jejich pomníky najdeme nedaleko Grandhotelu Pupp, když se vydáme kaštanovou alejí proti proudu řeky Teplé. Na skalách podél
cesty uvidíme četné pamětní desky, na nichž návštěvníci lázní
vyjad­řovali svou vděčnost za vyléčení. Po pár minutách přijdeme
k pomníku z roku 1883 s bustou Johanna Wolfganga Goetha, dílo
profesora Adolfa Donndorfa ze Stuttgartu. Pomník původně stával
v bývalém parku přímo u Grandhotelu Pupp. Německý básník
Karlovy Vary velmi miloval, navštívil je třináctkrát a napsal zde
řadu svých děl.
Goethova stezka nás dále zavede až ke Galerii umění. V bezprostřední blízkosti galerie se nachází pomník Friedricha Schillera
z roku 1909. Secesní památník navrhl arch. Friedrich Ohmann,
reliéf básníka vytesal do kamene karlovarský sochař Max Hiller.
Schiller pobýval v Karlových Varech v roce 1791 téměř celý měsíc, aby ulevil svým silným astmatickým obtížím. Přesto, že se
vyhýbal společnosti, byl u pramenů pro svou vysokou postavu
a narudlé vlasy středem pozornosti. Na doporučení lékaře vypil
denně 18 pohárků léčivé vody a nejraději vyjížděl na oslu do lázeňských lesů. Pracoval také na svém dramatu Wallenstein. Po
návratu domů radostně psal svým přátelům, že mu Karlovy Vary
navrátily zdraví.

Die Denkmäler der berühmten Dichter
Verneigen wir uns vor zwei Dichtern, deren Namen die ganze Welt
kennt. Ihre Denkmäler findet man nicht weit vom Grandhotel
Pupp, wenn man durch die Kastanienallee stromaufwärts des
Flusses Tepl geht. An den Felsen entlang des Weges sieht man zahlreiche Denktafeln, auf denen die Kurbesucher ihre Dankbarkeit für
die Genesung ausdrückten. Nach ein paar Minuten kommt man
zum Denkmal aus dem Jahre 1883 mit einer Büste von Johann
Wolfgang Goethe, einem Werk von Professor Adolf Donndorf aus
Stuttgart. Das Denkmal stand ursprünglich im ehemaligen Park
direkt am Grandhotel Pupp. Dieser deutsche Dichter liebte Karlsbad
sehr, er besuchte es dreizehn Mal und schrieb hier eine Reihe von
seinen Werken.
Der Goethe Pfad führt uns weiter bis zur Kunstgalerie. In der unmittelbaren Nähe der Galerie befindet sich das Denkmal von
Friedrich Schiller aus dem Jahre 1909. Das Jugendstildenkmal
entwarf der Architekt Friedrich Ohmann, das Relief des Dichters
stammt von dem Karlsbader Bildhauer Max Hiller. Schiller war
in Karlsbad im Jahre 1791 fast einen ganzen Monat lang, um seine
starken Asthmabeschwerden zu lindern. Obwohl er sich von der
Gesellschaft fernhielt, war er bei den Quellen wegen seiner großen
Gestalt und den rötlichen Haaren im Mittelpunkt der Aufmerk­

samkeit. Auf ärztliche Empfehlung trank er täglich 18 Becher mit
Heilwasser und am liebsten ritt er am Esel in die Kurwälder. Er
arbeitete auch an seinem Drama Wallenstein. Nach der Rückkehr
nach Hause schrieb er mit Freude an seine Freunde, dass ihm
Karlsbad die Gesundheit zurückgab.

Monuments to famous poets
Let us raise our hats to two poets whose names are known all over
the world. You can find their monuments near the Grandhotel
Pupp if you go along the chestnut avenue upstream the Teplá River.
You will see numerous memorial tablets on the rocks on both sides
of the road on which spa visitors expressed their gratitude for being
cured. After a few minutes you will come to a monument with the
Johann Wolfgang Goethe bust, a work by Professor Adolf Donndorf
from Stuttgart dating from 1883. The German poet loved Karlovy
Vary very much, visited it thirteen times and wrote a number of his
works here.
Goethe Path will lead you as far as the Art Gallery. The Friedrich
Schiller Monument from the year 1909 stands in the close vicinity
of the gallery. The Art Nouveau monument was designed by the
architect Friedrich Ohmann and the Karlovy Vary sculptor Max
Hiller chiselled the poet’s relief on the stone. Schiller stayed in
Karlovy Vary for almost a month in 1791 to relieve his asthma
troubles. Although he avoided people, he was the centre of attention at the springs because of his tall figure and reddish hair. He
