A gem of vernacular architecture
Holašovice is a small peculiar South Bohemian village located approximately 30 km north of Český Krumlov and about 15 km west of České Budějovice, next to the Blanský Forest,
protected landscape area. Holašovice was put on the UNESCO List of Cultural and Natural Heritage on 5 December, 1998 in Kyoto, Japan, for its extraordinary architectural and urban
values. Holašovice represents an exceptionally complete and well-preserved collection of granges, which were structurally and artistically adapted to a style known as “South Bohemian folk baroque” during the 19th century.
History
The area of Holašovice has been provably inhabited since the Neolithic period. However, the main architectural development began in the early 13th century. The arrangement of
the village square suggests that Holašovice was founded on a greenfield site within the efforts to colonize the South Bohemian border region. The development of settlement proves
extraordinary stability. Historically, the number and location of granges survived virtually unchanged until today.
The first written mention of the place appeared in a charter of Wenceslas II., king of Bohemia. He donated Holašovice along with several other villages to the Cistercian monastery of
Vyšší Brod. The village remained under administration of the Cistercians until 1848.
Originally, the village population was mostly ethnically Czech. Their lives were significantly affected by plague epidemics between 1520 and 1521, only two people survived. They left
the village and it remained empty. The cotters of the Vyšší Brod monastery became new village residents, this time of a German origin. During World War II, Holašovice was even part
of Greater German Empire.
Monument description
Twenty-three granges, protected by heritage preservation, open into a relatively large village square with dimensions of 210 x 70 m. Disposition of houses is characteristic of the folk baroque style where each building was arranged into three main parts. The frontage was extended on both sides backwards. On one side, there was a residential area. A granary or room
retained by a retired farmer were on the other side. Now, they are both part of the residential area. Cowsheds, stables and an outhouse were situated behind the residential area. The
ground plan was closed by a barn with a large gate which allowed carriages to pass from the village square up to the backyards. Behind the barn, there were fields and orchards.
This arrangement of the frontage enabled rich architectural structuring of both shields and their connection through the gate in the middle. Secular ornamental motifs, often geometrical and plant, dominate the decoration, accentuated by the rich colour of the facade. Unfortunately, interiors of the houses are not accessible. In the middle of the village square, there
are a pond, a blacksmith’s farmhouse with a former forge (now a grocery) and the chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk.
